A Fuzzy-PSO-PID with UPFC-RFB Solution for an LFC of an Interlinked Hydro Power System
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ACE, FACTS, fuzzy logic, LFC, PSO, RFB, UPFC
An LFC plays a vital part in passing on quality electric energy to energy consumers. Furthermore, with cutting-edge designs to move to modern and pollution-free energy generation, it may be conceivable to have a major hydropower in the future. Hydro plants are not suitable for continuous load alteration due to the large response time of hydroturbines. Hence, this paper shows a novel control design for an LFC of a hydro-hydro interlinked system based on joint actions of fuzzy logic with PID effectively optimized through particle swarm optimization (PSO) resulting in a Fuzzy-PSO-PID. The outcome of Fuzzy-PSO-PID is evaluated for step load variation in one of the regions of hydropower, and the outcomes of Fuzzy-PSO-PID are compared with a recently published LFC with respect to integral time absolute error (ITAE) value, values of PID, and graphical outcomes to show the impact of the proposed LFC action. The numerical results show that the ITAE value (0.002725) obtained through the proposed... [more]

A Short-Term and Long-Term Prognostic Method for PEM Fuel Cells Based on Gaussian Process Regression
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: extended Kalman filter (EKF), Gaussian process regression (GPR), long short-term memory (LSTM), proton exchange membrane fuel cell, remaining useful life prediction
An accurate prediction of the remaining useful life (RUL) of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is of great significance for its large-scale commercialization and life extension. This paper aims to develop a PEMFC degradation prediction method that incorporates short-term and long-term predictions. In the short-term prediction, a long short-term memory (LSTM) neural network is combined with a Gaussian process regression (GPR) probabilistic model to form a hybrid LSTM-GPR model with a deep structure. The model not only can accurately forecast the nonlinear details of PEMFC degradation but also provide a reliable confidence interval for the prediction results. The results showed that the proposed LSTM-GPR model outperforms the single models in both prediction accuracy and confidence interval. For the long-term prediction, a novel RUL prediction model based on an extended Kalman filter (EKF) and GPR is proposed. The GPR model is used to solve the problem that the EKF cannot upda... [more]

Modal Analysis of a Lithium-Ion Battery for Electric Vehicles
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electric vehicles, experiments, lithium-ion battery, modal analysis, vibration
The battery pack in electric vehicles is subjected to road-induced vibration and this vibration is one of the potential causes of battery pack failure, especially once the road-induced frequency is close to the natural frequency of the battery when resonance occurs in the cells. If resonance occurs, it may cause notable structural damage and deformation of cells in the battery pack. In this study, the natural frequencies and mode shapes of a commercial pouch lithium-ion battery (LIB) are investigated experimentally using a laser scanning vibrometer, and the effects of the battery supporting methods in the battery pack are presented. For this purpose, a test setup to hold the LIB on the shaker is designed. A numerical analysis using COMSOL Multiphysics software is performed to confirm that the natural frequency of the designed test setup is much higher than that of the battery cell. The experimental results show that the first natural frequency in the two-side supported and three-side s... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: flexible anode, hierarchical porous structure, high performances, lithium-ion battery, Si/N co-doping
Due to the rapid development of bendable electronic products, it is urgent to prepare flexible anode materials with excellent properties, which play a key role in flexible lithium-ion batteries. Although carbon fibers are excellent candidates for preparing flexible anode materials, the low discharge specific capacity prevents their further application. In this paper, a hierarchical porous and silicon (Si)/nitrogen (N) co-doped carbon nanofiber anode was successfully prepared, in which Si doping can improve specific capacity, N doping can improve conductivity, and a fabricated hierarchical porous structure can increase the reactive sites, improve the ion transport rate, and enable the electrolyte to penetrate the inner part of carbon nanofibers to improve the electrolyte/electrode contacting area during the charging−discharging processes. The hierarchical porous and Si/N co-doped carbon nanofiber anode does not require a binder, and is flexible and foldable. Moreover, it exhibits an ult... [more]

Horizontal Shower Heat Exchanger as an Effective Domestic Hot Water Heating Alternative
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: discounted payback period (DPP), drain water heat recovery (DWHR) unit, heat exchanger efficiency, internal rate of return (IRR), net present value (NPV), profitability index (PI)
Wastewater has significant potential as a source of clean energy. This energy can be used both within external sewer networks and on the scale of individual residential buildings, and the use of shower heat exchangers appears to be the most reasonable solution. However, in the case of Poland, the problem is still the unwillingness of society to use this type of solution, caused mainly by the lack of space for the installation of vertical drain water heat recovery (DWHR) units and the low efficiency of horizontal units. In response to this issue, the efficiency of a new compact shower heat exchanger designed to be mounted below the shower tray, as well as its linear counterpart, was investigated under various operating conditions. In addition, the financial efficiency of using the compact DWHR unit with average water consumption for showering was evaluated. For this purpose, discount methods were used to estimate the financial efficiency of investments. The study showed that the compact... [more]

A New Wind Turbine Power Performance Assessment Approach: SCADA to Power Model Based with Regression-Kriging
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: met mast, output power, regression-kriging, SCADA, wind resource, wind turbine
Assessment of the wind turbine output power (WTG OP) during the operation and maintenance is one of the key indicators of operation quality evaluation. It is often carried out in the form of the wind speed-power curve. This form only considers the wind speed, and it is usually measured according to relevant IEC standards, e.g., IEC 61400-12, which has problems such as long measurement duration and harsh conditions. This study proposes a WTG OP assessment method based on SCADA data by using the regression-kriging algorithm. The influences of wind shear, turbulence intensity, and air density on the WTG OP were analyzed. Two regression-kriging output power models were built based on SCADA data (i.e., SCADA2power model) and wind resource parameters from met mast (i.e., wind2power model). According to the evaluation of the simulation result, it was found that the results of the two models are basically consistent. Based on the evaluation of historical data under normal operating conditions,... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: COVID-19, energy consumption, mechanical durability, particle density, wood pellets
At present, we are still feeling the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in connection with the huge amount of waste generated. However, the reuse of the produced waste in other processes requires energy consumption. This article deals with the reuse of face masks FFP2, which were added as an admixture to spruce or beech sawdust and then processed into pellets. During the production process of the pellets, energy consumption was measured and further converted to one ton of pellets, and also the consumption was reflected in the price of electricity. After storage, the mechanical durability and dimensions of the individual pellets were measured, and their density was calculated. Based on the results, it can be concluded that spruce pellets with 10% face masks FFP2 (consumption 747.41 kWh; durability 97.53%) and beech pellets with 5% face masks FFP2 (consumption 721.27 kWh; durability 97.38%) achieved higher values of mechanical durability and also consumed more energy than the remaining sam... February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: DFIG, fault current limiters, fault ride through, grid fault, PMSG, wind energy
The technology of variable speed wind turbines is very promising in renewable power generation. It is imperative for wind turbines to gain control after grid disturbances and contribute to the stability of power grids as part of the requirements of grid codes set by grid operators in operating wind farms. Fault current limiters (FCLs) are capable of augmenting the performance of wind turbines during grid disturbances. In this article, the augmentation of the Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) and the Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG) wind turbines, which are the two most popular variable speed wind turbines, is presented. The evaluation of both wind turbines was performed considering the Series Dynamic Braking Resistor (SDBR), Bridge Fault Current Limiter (BFCL) and the Capacitive Bridge Fault Current Limiter (CBFCL). The modeling of the FCLs in the wind turbines was derived for steady state and grid disturbances so that their dynamic behavior could be understood. The gr... [more]

Measurement of the Convective Heat Transfer Coefficient and Temperature of Vehicle-Integrated Photovoltaic Modules
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: convective heat transfer coefficient, temperature change rate, vehicle-integrated photovoltaics
To improve the thermal design of vehicle-integrated photovoltaic (VIPV) modules, this study clarifies the characteristics of the convective heat transfer coefficient h between the vehicle roof surface and the surrounding air with respect to vehicle speed. Experiments on two types of vehicles with different body shapes indicate that h is strongly affected by vehicle speed, and it is also affected by body shape depending on the position on the roof. Empirical equations for approximating h as a function of vehicle speed and position on the vehicle roof are derived from the experimental datasets, and the differences between the equations derived herein and traditional equations that have been used for the heat transfer analysis of conventional stationary photovoltaic (PV) modules are clarified. Furthermore, the temperature change characteristics of the VIPV module were measured experimentally, confirming that h is the dominant factor causing the high temperature change rate of the VIPV mod... Steam Cavity Expansion Model for Steam Flooding in Deep Heavy Oil Reservoirs
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: deep heavy oil reservoir, heat energy loss, steam cavity expansion model, vertical well steam flooding, wellbore heat loss
Steam flooding is crucial for the development of heavy oil reservoirs, and the development of the steam cavity significantly determines the efficiency of steam flooding. Previous studies have elucidated the concept of steam overburden and pseudomobility ratio; however, the thermal energy loss in deep heavy oil reservoirs during steam injection needs further investigation. Therefore, in this study, the vapour−liquid interface theory and mathematical integration were used to establish a steam cavity expansion model. The wellbore heat loss rate coefficient, steam overlay, and pseudomobility ratio were used to accurately describe the development of the steam cavity in deep heavy oil reservoirs. The proposed model was experimentally validated, and it was observed that the model could accurately reflect the actual mine conditions. In addition, the pressure gradient distribution of the steam belt and the heat dissipation areas of the top and bottom layers of the steam cavity were evaluated. T... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air filter pressure drop, emission of toxic exhaust components, engine power, exhaust components, internal combustion engines
This paper presents an experimental evaluation of the effect of air filter pressure drop on the composition of exhaust gases and the operating parameters of a modern internal combustion Diesel engine. A literature analysis of the methods of reducing the emission of toxic components of exhaust gases from SI engines was conducted. It has been shown that the air filter pressure drop, increasing during the engine operation, causes a significant decrease in power output and an increase in fuel consumption, as well as smoke emission of Diesel engines with the classical injection system with a piston (sectional) in-line injection pump. It has also been shown, on the basis of a few literature studies, that the increase in the resistance of air filter flow causes a change in the composition of car combustion engines, with the effect of the air filter pressure drop on turbocharged engines being insignificant. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: economic growth, productivity, renewables energy
The threat of the negative consequences of global warming makes the discussion about the relationship between economic growth, productivity, and increasing renewable energy involvement an important topic. Hence, the aim of this study is to analyze the impact of renewable energy and energy supply on economic growth and productivity at the national level using stochastic frontier analysis and the aggregate production function framework. In doing so, we analyzed a panel of annual data from 133 countries from 2008 to 2014. We apply a generalized stochastic frontier model, which allows us to differentiate between persistent and transient inefficiency, as well as individual effects. Our results indicate a threshold level in terms of a country’s development that needs to be obtained to benefit from increasing renewable energy involvement over time. However, if this threshold level is obtained, productivity gains are evident. We also found that the role of the energy supply in aggregate produc... [more]

Recently, as the perception of eco-friendliness has changed, the demand for energy storage devices has been rapidly increasing due to the growth of the electric vehicle industry and smart grid facilities, which are emerging as an alternative to next-generation electricity supply and demand. Therefore, the importance of battery management technology is growing, and various voltage balancing techniques between battery cells are being studied in order to maintain high efficiency and continuous performance of batteries. This paper proposes a voltage balancing topology using a single input-multiple output (SIMO) two-switch flyback converter in a series battery configuration to resolve voltage imbalance between batteries. The characteristic of the proposed topology is that each cell on the secondary side of the two-switch flyback converter is connected to one high-frequency transformer to share the magnetic flux, and voltage balancing is performed according to the switch operation of the con... In view of the serious heat loss in the process of steam injection for heavy oil recovery, nonhydrocarbon gas combined with steam has attracted much attention in recent years to realize the efficient development of heavy oil. Due to the wide variety of nonhydrocarbon gases, their performance in pressurization, dissolution, viscosity reduction, and heat loss decrease is changeable. In this paper, four groups of one-dimensional physical simulation experiments on different nonhydrocarbon gas-assisted steam flooding methods were carried out, and the effect on oil displacement characteristics under high temperature and pressure conditions was studied. Moreover, the differences in N2, CO2, and flue gas in energy supplementation, heat transfer, and oil recovery efficiency were also analyzed. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: film thickness, heat transfer coefficient, R32 flow condensation, VOF model
In this paper, the flow condensation heat transfer characteristics of R32 in a horizontally oriented tube with a horizontal U-bend (HUB tube) and a horizontally oriented tube with a vertical U-bend (VUB tube) were numerically investigated. The volume of fluid (VOF) multiphase model with the mass transfer assumption by Lee is adopted to simulate the flow condensation behavior of R32, which are validated by well-known empirical correlations. The influence of structural parameters, mass flux and vapor quality on the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) and liquid film distribution is investigated. Meanwhile, the local liquid film thickness (LLFT) and local heat transfer coefficient (LHTC) are also depicted. The phase transition at the U-bend section is captured. Results show that the U-bend has remarkable disturbance on the flow pattern and LHTC due to the effect of centrifugal force where the LLFT is changed, inducing strong secondary flow. The LHTC is increased by a maximum of 8.47% and 11.8... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: buried tube heat exchanger, double-pipe, heat transfer, heating and cooling, middle-shallow layer, multi-borehole
Just as the double-pipe heat exchanger is being utilized in an increasing number of applications, its research content is also deepening. For this paper, based on the air-conditioning cold and heat source project of a building in Handan, Hebei Province, a 300-meter medium-shallow well double-pipe heat exchanger was used for heating and cooling, and a corresponding heat transfer model was established. The changes of parameters such as the inlet and outlet temperature, heat exchange (with and without a temperature gradient), and borehole wall temperature distribution between a single borehole, double boreholes, and four boreholes over one year in medium-shallow wells were simulated and analyzed. By comparing the obtained experimental data and the simulation data, the accuracy of the heat transfer model was verified. Modular Level Power Electronics (MLPE) Based Distributed PV System for Partial Shaded Conditions
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dragonfly algorithm, MLPE, MPPT, partial shading condition, photovoltaic, uniform irradiance condition
Photovoltaic (PV) solar energy is a very promising renewable energy technology, as solar PV systems are less efficient because of climate conditions, temperature, and irradiance change. So, to resolve this problem, two PV topologies are used, i.e., centralized and distributed PV systems. The centralized technique is quicker than the distributed technique in terms of convergence speed and a faster power tracking approach. In the event of uniform irradiance, the centralized system also has the benefit of supplying superior energy, but in PS scenarios, a huge amount of energy is lost. However, the distributed approach requires current and voltage measurements at each panel, resulting in a massive data set. Nevertheless, in the event of shading circumstances, the distributed technique is highly effective because a modular level power electronics (MLPE) converter is used. While in a centralized PV system, there is only a single DC-DC converter for the whole PV system. In this research work,... [more]

Recent Advances on CO2 Mitigation Technologies: On the Role of Hydrogenation Route via Green H2
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carbon capture and utilization, CO2 hydrogenation, green H2, power-to-X
The increasing trend in global energy demand has led to an extensive use of fossil fuels and subsequently in a marked increase in atmospheric CO2 content, which is the main culprit for the greenhouse effect. In order to successfully reverse this trend, many schemes for CO2 mitigation have been proposed, taking into consideration that large-scale decarbonization is still infeasible. At the same time, the projected increase in the share of variable renewables in the future energy mix will necessitate large-scale curtailment of excess energy. Collectively, the above crucial problems can be addressed by the general scheme of CO2 hydrogenation. This refers to the conversion of both captured CO2 and green H2 produced by RES-powered water electrolysis for the production of added-value chemicals and fuels, which are a great alternative to CO2 sequestration and the use of green H2 as a standalone fuel. Indeed, direct utilization of both CO2 and H2 via CO2 hydrogenation offers, on the one hand,... [more]

Keywords: aerosols, clouds, Europe, inclination, North Africa, solar energy, tilt angle
Maximum efficiency of surfaces that exploit solar energy, including Photovoltaic Panels and Thermal collectors, is achieved by installing them in a certain inclination (tilt). Most common approach is to select an inclination angle equal to the location’s latitude. This is based on the astronomical calculations of the sun’s position throughout the year but ignores meteorological factors. Cloud coverage and aerosols tend to change the direct irradiance but also the radiance sky distribution, thus horizontal surfaces receive larger amounts than tilted ones in specific atmospheric conditions (e.g., cases of cloud presence). In the present study we used 15 years of data, from 25 cities in Europe and North Africa in order to estimate the optimal tilt angle and the related energy benefits based in real atmospheric conditions. Data were retrieved from Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Service (CAMS). Four diffuse irradiance, various models are compared, and their differences are evaluated. Equ... [more]

Keywords: dynamic monitoring, fatigue assessment, strain gauges, wind turbine
Wind turbines are structures predominantly subjected to dynamic loads throughout their period of life. In that sense, fatigue design plays a central role. Particularly, support structure design might be conservative with respect to fatigue, which may lead to a real fatigue life of considerably more than 20 years. For these reasons, the implementation of a fatigue monitoring system can be an important advantage for the management of wind farms, providing the following outputs: (i) estimation of the evolution of real fatigue condition; (ii) since the real condition of fatigue damage is known, these results could be an essential element for a decision about extending the lifespan of the structure and the possibility of repowering or overpowering; and (iii) the results of the instrumented wind turbines can be extrapolated to other wind turbines of the same wind farm. This paper reviews the procedures for calculating the fatigue damage of wind turbine towers using strain measurements. The a... [more]
