Model Predictive Control of a Modular 7-Level Converter Based on SiC-MOSFET Devices—An Experimental Assessment
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Model Predictive Control, modular converter, multilevel converter, phase shift multicarrier pulse-width modulation
Power converter technology has expanded into a wide range of low, medium, and high power applications due to the ability to manage electrical energy efficiently. In this regard, the modular multilevel converter has become a viable alternative to ensure an optimal harmonic profile with a sinusoidal voltage at the load side. Model predictive control (MPC) is a state-of-the-art technique that has been successfully used to control power electronic converters due to its ability to handle multiple control objectives. Nevertheless, in the classical MPC approach, the optimal vector is applied during the whole sampling period producing an output voltage. This solution causes an unbalanced switching frequency of the power semiconductor, which then causes unbalanced stress on the power devices. Modulation strategies have been combined with MPC to overcome these shortcomings. This paper introduces the experimental assessment of a 7-level converter combining a simple phase shift multicarrier pulse-... [more]

ADRC-Based Habituating Control of Double-Heater Heat Source
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active-disturbance rejection control, habituating control structure, heating systems, virtual commissioning
This paper deals with the proposition of improvement in the performance of a heat source by modification of its structure and by deriving a dedicated control system. Traditional heat sources consist of a single heater of high nominal power, but slow dynamics, that is regulated by a single closed loop control system. In this paper, an existing heater serially-connected with a supplemental heater with low nominal power but fast dynamics is proposed. A dedicated control system was derived with two active disturbance rejection controllers (ADRC) implemented in the habituating control structure. The proposed solution was validated using a virtual commissioning procedure where the heating system was simulated in the SIEMENS® Simit v10.3 industrial software, and ADRC controllers were implemented in SIEMENS® PLCSIM Advanced using dedicated library function blocks. The results showed the superiority of the proposed approach in comparison with the traditional single closed loop solution. The pro... [more]

Modeling and Vector Control of a Cage+Nested-Loop Rotor Brushless Doubly Fed Induction Motor
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: brushless doubly fed induction machine, cage+NL, DFIG, nested loop
The brushless doubly fed induction machine (BDFIM) is being considered as a possible solution for low-speed wind energy generator applications. It has been proposed as an alternative to the doubly fed induction machine (DFIM) due to its robust rotor structure as well as low operational maintenance requirements. However, due to its complicated control philosophy, higher overall machine size due to the extra set of control windings in the stator, and slightly lower efficiency, it is yet to be adopted in commercial applications. In this paper, a simplified vector control scheme for the control winding of a cage+nested-loop (cage+NL) rotor BDFIM is proposed. Experimental results are compared with simulations to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

Online Failure Diagnostic in Full-Bridge Module for Optimum Setup of an IGBT-Based Multilevel Inverter
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: critical failures mechanisms, IGBT devices, isolated multilevel inverter, low-frequency transformers, on-line diagnostic method
An online failure diagnostic test is essential to ensure the robustness and reliability of high-powered systems. Furthermore, the overall design must comprise diagnostic strategies to detect in-service and high-powered module defects. This paper describes the critical failure mechanisms−−cross-conduction, inductive avalanche, second turn-on, VS-undershoot, inrush current, and thermal runaway−−that directly affect insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) operation. The constructed inverter contains 18 transformer-based taps (six per phase); however, this work studied a single tap (IGBT-based full-bridge module) to understand the reasons for failure and the routes to mitigate them. Moreover, a cost-effective solution using the IR2127STRPBF driver circuit was implemented to reduce the probability of thermal runaway in case of overcurrent, short-circuit, or avalanche events. For this reason, the electrical current state was adjusted using an FPGA digital resource to perform dynamic PWM con... [more]

Mechanical Fault Diagnosis of a Disconnector Operating Mechanism Based on Vibration and the Motor Current
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: AdaBoost−SVM, disconnector operating mechanism, fusion diagnosis, motor current signal, vibration signal
The mechanical fault diagnosis of a disconnector operating mechanism using a single signal is not sufficiently accurate and reliable. To address this problem, this paper proposes a new fault diagnosis method based on the vibration signal and the motor current signal. First, based on the analysis of the motor stator current signal envelope, segmented envelope RMS values are extracted. Then, the vibration signal of the operating mechanism is processed with VMD (Variational Mode Decomposition). In this paper, the number of modal decompositions K is selected according to the envelope entropy. Second, the effective value of the current segment envelope is fused with the energy entropy value of each IMF component to construct the feature parameters for fault identification. Finally, a fusion weighting algorithm using AdaBoost is proposed to train an SVM as a strong classifier to improve the correct fault diagnosis rate. In this paper, the proposed new diagnosis method is applied to a 220 kV... [more]

Keywords: geochemistry, Heshan Formation, mineral, rare earth elements and Y (REY), Yunkai Upland
The anomalous enrichment of the rare earth elements and yttrium (REY), U, Mo, As, Se, and V in the coal-bearing intervals intercalated within the carbonate successions in South China has attracted much attention due to the highly promising recovery potential for these elements. This study investigates the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of the late Permian coal-bearing intervals (layers A−F) intercalated in marine carbonate strata in the Xian’an Coalfield in Guangxi Province to elucidate the mode of occurrence and enrichment process of highly elevated elements. There are two mineralogical assemblages, including quartz-albite-kaolinite-carbonates assemblage in layers D−F and quartz-illite-kaolinite-carbonates assemblage in layers A−C. Compared to the upper continental crust composition (UCC), the REY, U, Mo, As, Se, and V are predominantly enriched in layers A and B, of which layer A displays the REY−V−Se−As assemblage while layer B shows the Mo−U−V assemblage. Wind-Storage Combined Virtual Inertial Control Based on Quantization and Regulation Decoupling of Active Power Increments
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: BESS, curve-shifting method, DFIG, P-D algorithm, SFD, virtual inertia
With the increasing proportion of wind turbines in power grids, they are required to have capabilities of active and efficient virtual inertial response to maintain grid frequency stability. However, the virtual inertial control methods currently used in doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) units suffer from a secondary frequency drop (SFD) problem. Although the SFD can be inhibited by reducing the active power support strength of the DFIG units during inertia response, it will undoubtedly weaken the virtual inertia of the units. Therefore, how to eliminate the SFD while increasing the virtual inertia of the units is a worthy issue for studying. To solve this issue, a wind-storage combined virtual inertial control system based on quantization and regulation decoupling of active power increments is proposed in this paper. First, by setting the parameters of a proportional−differential (P-D) algorithm, the total active power increments required for virtual inertial response are quantifi... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Ecuadorian electricity market, energy management, fuzzy control, PV system, self-consumption
This paper proposes a fuzzy-based energy management strategy (EMS) to maximize the self-consumption from a PV installation with an energy storage system (ESS) for the residential sector adapted to the Ecuadorian electricity market. The EMS includes two control levels: Energy management at the end-user level (Fuzzy-based EMS and optimized by genetic Algorithm) and Energy management at the distribution grid level (Fuzzy-based EMS). Both strategies aim to maximize the use of the energy generated at home (taking into account the local solar generation profile), fulfilling the loads’ demand and injecting the energy surplus into the main grid to be economically compensated. Additionally, this paper presents economical modeling according to the electricity market in Ecuador. The main results showed a cost reduction in the electricity bill up to 83.64% from the base case (residential consumption without a PV system). Stochastic Distributed Control for Arbitrarily Connected Microgrid Clusters
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: distributed control, energy management, jump linear theory, large-scale systems, microgrid clusters, stochastic control
Due to the success of single microgrids, the coming years are likely to see a transformation of the current electric power system to a multiple microgrid network. Despite its obvious promise, however, this paradigm still faces many challenges, particularly when it comes to the control and coordination of energy exchanges between subsystems. In view of that, in this paper we propose an optimal stochastic control strategy in which microgrids are modeled as stochastic hybrid dynamic systems. The optimal control is based on the jump linear theory and is used as a means to maximize energy storage and the utilization of renewable energy sources in islanded microgrid clusters. Once the gain matrices are obtained, the concept of ε-suboptimality is applied to determine appropriate levels of power exchange between microgrids for any given interconnection pattern. It is shown that this approach can be efficiently applied to large-scale systems and guarantees their connective stability. Simulation... [more]

Fast Model Predictive Control of PEM Fuel Cell System Using the L1 Norm
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: L1 cost function, Model Predictive Control, optimisation, proton exchange membrane fuel cell
This work describes the development of a fast Model Predictive Control (MPC) algorithm for a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell. The MPC cost-function used considers the sum of absolute values of predicted control errors (the L1 norm). Unlike previous approaches to nonlinear MPC-L1, in which quite complicated neural approximators have been used, two analytical approximators of the absolute value function are utilised. An advanced trajectory linearisation is performed on-line. As a result, an easy-to-solve quadratic optimisation task is derived. All implementation details of the discussed algorithm are detailed for two considered approximators. Furthermore, the algorithm is thoroughly compared with the classical MPC-L2 method in which the sum of squared predicted control errors is minimised. A multi-criteria control quality assessment is performed as the MPC-L1 and MPC-L2 algorithms are compared using four control quality indicators. It is shown that the presented MPC-L1 scheme gi... Adaptive Second-Order Sliding Mode Control of Buck Converters with Multi-Disturbances
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive control, buck converter, robustness, second-order sliding mode, sliding mode control, stability, zero-crossing detection
In this paper, a novel adaptive second-order sliding mode (2-SM) control approach, based on online zero-crossing detection, was proposed to solve the problems of the chattering and fixed control gain for buck converters with multi-disturbances. In modeling, the possible parameter perturbations and external disturbances of the converter system were contained. Instead of the traditional first-order sliding mode (1-SM), the twisting algorithm with 2-SM was adopted for the controller design, which could overcome the chattering problem and realize control continuity. Meanwhile, a novel adaptive mechanism was introduced to replace the conventional fixed control gain by time-varying control gain, the idea of which is to calculate the number of the zero-crossing points of the sliding surface online. As a result, the control magnitude of the improved controller could be reduced to a minimal admissible level, and the steady error of the output voltage could converge to the expected value. Keywords: characteristic parameters, differential reservoir-forming model, main controlling factors, Niutitang Formation, organic matter pores, pore development characteristics, pore structure, Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation
Fine dissection of microscopic pore structure variations between the Niutitang Formation and the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation will help to improve the understanding of the underlying geological theory of shale gas in northern Guizhou Province. The stratigraphic, geochemical, physical, and tectonic properties of the two formations vary greatly, resulting in differential development of the microscopic pore structure among reservoirs and, as a result, major variances in gas concentration. To explore the mechanism of differential pore evolution, experimental techniques and instruments such as gas adsorption, liquid intrusion, SEM, XRD, and organic geochemical tests were utilized. The results indicate that the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation is in a high-maturity stage, while the Niutitang Formation is in an over-mature stage. The latter has a higher TOC content. Model-Free Predictive Control and Its Applications
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Model Predictive Control, model-free control, model-free predictive control
Predictive control offers many advantages such as simple design and a systematic way to handle constraints. Model predictive control (MPC) belongs to predictive control, which uses a model of the system for predictions used in predictive control. A major drawback of MPC is the dependence of its performance on the model of the system. Any discrepancy between the system model and actual plant behavior will greatly affect the performance of the MPC. Recently, model-free approaches have been gaining attention because they are not dependent on the system model parameters. To obtain the advantages of both a model-free approach and predictive control, model-free predictive control (MFPC) is being explored and reported in the literature for different applications such as power electronics and electric drives. This paper presents an overview of model-free predictive control. A comprehensive review of the application of MFPC in power converters, electric drives, power systems, and microgrids is... [more]

A Cooperative ADRC-Based Approach for Angular Velocity Synchronization and Load-Sharing in Servomechanisms
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active disturbance rejection control (ADRC), cooperative control, extended state observers (ESOs), input-to-state-stability (ISS), load-sharing, speed synchronization
This paper is concerned with designing a dynamical synchronization (via a robust cooperative control) of an electromechanical system network (EMSN), consisting of nonidentical brushed DC motors, where only the motors’ angular velocity measurements are available. The challenge of the proposed approach is that the actuation provided by the motor needs to handle external disturbances to achieve the velocity tracking task and handle the interaction between both motors cooperatively to share the load and the disturbance rejection. The control’s basis involves differential flatness and an active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) framework augmented using ideas from the graph theory analysis and multi-agent networks. Experimental results verify the theoretical developments and show the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy despite unexpectedly changing load disturbance and parameters uncertainties. The proposed algorithm is suitable for embedded use due to its simplicity. It can b... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fault detection and diagnosis (FDD), fuzzy logic controller (FLC), machine learning (ML), photovoltaic (PV) systems
Solar photovoltaic PV plants worldwide are continuously monitored and carefully protected to ensure safe and reliable operation through detecting and isolating faults. Faults are very common in modern solar PV systems which interrupt normal system operation adversely affecting the performance of the PV systems. When undetected, faults not only cause significant reduction in the efficiency and life span of the PV system, but also result in damage and fire hazards compromising their reliability. Therefore, early fault detection and diagnosis of photovoltaic plants is a necessity for safe and reliable operation required for growing solar PV systems. Unfortunately, several recent fire incidents have been reported recently caused by undetected faults in solar PV systems. Motivated by this challenge, this paper, utilizing a proposed fuzzy logic algorithm, presents a novel technique for detecting and classifying faults in solar PV systems. A Novel Electronic Wedge Brake Based on Active Disturbance Rejection Control
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: actuator, ADRC, brake-by-wire system, electronic wedge brake, screw-driven wedge, sliding mode control, space vector pulse width modulation
The electronic wedge brake system (EWB) used in the automotive industry is a new structure designed for brake-by-wire systems. This paper proposes a novel EWB system which is mainly composed of a screw-driven wedged inner brake pad, a fixed outer brake pad, a fixed caliper-flexible brake rotor and a hybrid stepper motor. The proposed EWB system does not have a planetary gear set or a ball screw mechanism, it simplified the existing EWB systems. The proposed EWB system is designed to take advantage of the self-interlocking ability of the screw mechanism to hold the brakes with zero-overhauling and the self-energizing ability of the wedge brake pad to reduce the braking effort. In the braking phase, the screw driven wedge inner brake pad forces the flexible rotor against a fixed flat brake pad. The rotor is elastically deformed to make the contact against the fixed pad. Except for the applied force, the friction force between the brake rotor and the wedge pad exerts additional force as t... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: automotive vehicle, dual electronic control units, dual-winding permanent magnet synchronous motor, electro-hydraulic brake, functional safety, motor control, pressure control, redundant brake system
The electro-hydraulic brake (EHB) system of a vehicle should operate normally under all circumstances to ensure automotive safety. This redundant system guarantees the minimum required performance in the event of a critical failure of the brake system. In this study, we propose a redundant motor control strategy for the EHB to fully realize a functional safety design. The EHB system is composed of two identical electronic control units (ECUs), a dual three-phase dual-winding permanent magnet synchronous motor (DW-PMSM), and hydraulic components to generate brake pressure through the movement of an actuator. First, we propose a method to acquire the necessary motor current for generating brake pressure. Second, we present an initial driving method for the DW-PMSM for achieving stability before generating the braking pressure that involves setting the actuator’s origin position without a position sensor. Keywords: frequency regulation, microgrids, Model Predictive Control
A frequency and voltage control strategy based on a decentralized and communication-less approach is proposed in this work and applied to Photovoltaic-Storage-Microturbine islanded Microgrids (MGs). The approach is based on the Model Predictive Control (MPC) technique. Thanks to the use of local measurements, each source can nullify the steady-state voltage and frequency errors by means of a dedicated MPC controller. Consequently, the proposed approach unifies the advantages of classic droop and master/slave controllers due to the absence of communication links among devices and due to the absence of a secondary centralized control loop.

Prediction of Oil Saturation during Water and Gas Injection Using Controllable Convolutional Long Short-Term Memory
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: controllable convolutional LSTM, oil recovery, oil saturation, spatiotemporal sequence
Oil saturation is a kind of spatiotemporal sequence that changes dynamically with time, and it is affected not only by the reservoir properties, but also by the injection−production parameters. When predicting oil saturation during water and gas injection, the influence of time, space and injection−production parameters should be considered. Aiming at this issue, a prediction method based on a controllable convolutional long short-term memory network (Ctrl-CLSTM) is proposed in this paper. The Ctrl-CLSTM is an unsupervised learning model whose input is the previous spatiotemporal sequence together with the controllable factors of corresponding moments, and the output is the sequence to be predicted. In this way, future oil saturation can be generated from the historical context. Concretely, the convolution operation is embedded into each unit to describe the interaction between temporal features and spatial structures of oil saturation, thus the Ctrl-CLSTM realizes the unified modeling... Keywords: heat and mass transfer, mechanically pumped two-phase loop (MPTL), precise thermal control, thermally controlled accumulator, transient numerical simulation
A mechanically pumped two-phase loop (MPTL) system used for the accurate and stable thermal control of orbital heat sources can show excellent characteristics. In order to study the dynamic behaviors of heat and mass transfer of MPTL systems, particularly in response to heat load variations, a transient numerical model was developed by using the time-dependent Navier-Stokes equations. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: carbon emission trading, corporate financing, manufacturing firm
As an important tool to control CO2 emission, carbon emission trading (CET) has been highlighted in prior studies for its positive effects on firms. However, we are concerned about the role of the CET in corporate financing. Through a quasi-natural experiment from China’s CET pilot, regarded as the start-up stage of China’s emission trading system, we investigate the manufacturing corporate financing (i.e., debt and commercial credit financing). The results show that the firms in China’s CET market have less debt financing. Additionally, in the heterogeneity analysis, we found that (1) the CET is negatively related to corporate financing when their financing constraints are weak, whereas it only reduces long-term debt for the firms with strong financing constraints. (2) The impact of the CET on corporate financing is not significant for the firms located in first-tier cities in China, but in other cities, the CET negatively influences firms’ long-term debt and contributes to commercial...
