Torque Vectoring Control of RWID Electric Vehicle for Reducing Driving-Wheel Slippage Energy Dissipation in Cornering
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: electric vehicle, recursive least squares, slip energy consumption, the longitudinal linear stiffness, torque vectoring
The anxiety of driving range and inconvenience of battery recharging has placed high requirements on the energy efficiency of electric vehicles. To reduce driving-wheel slip energy consumption while cornering, a torque vectoring control strategy for a rear-wheel independent-drive (RWID) electric vehicle is proposed. First, the longitudinal linear stiffness of each driving wheel is estimated by using the approach of recursive least squares. Then, an initial differential torque is calculated for reducing their overall tire slippage energy dissipation. However, before the differential torque is applied to the two side of driving wheels, an acceleration slip regulation (ASR) is introduced into the overall control strategy to avoid entering into the tire adhesion saturation region resulting in excessive slip. Finally, the simulations of typical manoeuvring conditions are performed to verify the veracity of the estimated tire longitudinal linear stiffness and effectiveness of the torque vect... [more]

Enhanced Inertial Response Capability of a Variable Wind Energy Conversion System
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: DFIG, inertial response, power system control, wind generation, wind generation
An inertial response emulated control strategy of doubly-fed induction generators (DFIGs) is able to arrest their frequency decline following a severe frequency event. Nevertheless, the control coefficient is unchanged, so as to limit the benefit potentiality of improving the inertial response capability for various disturbances and provide less of a benefit for boosting the frequency nadir. This paper addresses an enhanced inertial response emulated control scheme for a DFIG to improve the maximum frequency deviation and maximum rate of change of frequency for various disturbances. To this end, the control coefficient is coupled with the system frequency deviation so as to regulate the control coefficient according to the system frequency deviation (i.e., sizes of the disturbance). Results clearly indicate that the proposed inertial response emulated control strategy provides better performance in terms of improving the maximum rate of change of frequency and maximum frequency deviati... Generic Framework for the Optimal Implementation of Flexibility Mechanisms in Large-Scale Smart Grids
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: aggregated terms, centralised MPC, decentralised MPC, flexibility mechanisms, large-scale systems, Model Predictive Control
This paper aims to provide the smart grid research community with an open and accessible general mathematical framework to develop and implement optimal flexibility mechanisms in large-scale network applications. The motivation of this paper is twofold. On the one hand, flexibility mechanisms are currently a hot topic of research, which is aimed to mitigate variation and uncertainty of electricity demand and supply in decentralised grids with a high aggregated share of renewables. On the other hand, a large part of such related research is performed by heuristic methods, which are generally inefficient (such methods do not guarantee optimality) and difficult to extrapolate for different use cases. Alternatively, this paper presents an MPC-based (model predictive control) framework explicitly including a generic flexibility mechanism, which is easy to particularise to specific strategies such as demand response, flexible production and energy efficiency services. The proposed framework... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: bioenergy, carbon content, lyophilization, social class, stand density management, ultimate analyses, volatile carbon, white spruce, wood biomass, wood drying methodologies
The accuracy and precision with which carbon amounts have been accounted for in forests have been questioned. As countries seek to comply with agreements to reduce global warming and industries seek to maximize bioenergy potential, this matter has increased international concern. White spruce (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss) stand density management trials in the Petawawa Research Forest, Ontario, Canada, were sampled to evaluate carbon concentration variation within trees and plots of differing stand density. Sample-drying methodologies were also tested to compare freeze-dried carbon (FDC) and oven-dried carbon (ODC) measurements. The average FDC was 51.80 ± 1.19%, and the corrected freeze-dried carbon content (FDCCOR) was 51.76 ± 1.33%. The average ODC was 49.10 ± 0.92%, and the average volatile carbon fraction (Cvol) was 2.67 ± 1.71%. FDC was higher than ODC (mean of the differences = 2.52) and generally more variable. ODC significantly decreased radially and longitudinally. FDC was sig... [more]

Water Hammer Control Using Additional Branched HDPE Pipe
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: additional pipe, branched pipe, hydraulic transients, numerical simulation, viscoelasticity, water hammer control
In pressurised pipeline systems, various water hammer events commonly occur. This phenomenon can cause extensive damage or even lead to a failure of the pumping system. The aim of this work is to experimentally re-examine the possibility of using an additional polymeric pipe, installed at the downstream end of the main pipeline, to control water hammer. A previous study on this topic investigated additional polymeric pipes connected to the hydraulic system with a short joint section of the same diameter as the main pipeline. In the current research, a different method of including an additional pipe was considered which involved connecting it with a pipe of a smaller diameter than the main pipeline. Three additional HDPE pipes, with different volumes, were investigated. The performance of the devices was studied for hydraulic transients induced by both rapid and slow, manual valve closures. Experimental results show that the additional polymeric pipe can provide significant pressure su... [more]

An Improved Droop Control Scheme of a Doubly-Fed Induction Generator for Various Disturbances
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive droop coefficient, doubly-fed induction generator, frequency nadir, ROCOF, wind power
Doubly-fed induction generators (DFIGs) participate in the system frequency regulation using a fixed-coefficient droop control scheme. Nevertheless, the frequency-supporting capability of this control scheme with fixed gain is limited for different disturbances. This paper suggests an improved droop control scheme for a DFIG that can both alleviate the frequency nadir and maximum rate of change of frequency (ROCOF) during the frequency regulation. To achieve this, an adaptive droop control coefficient based on the ROCOF is suggested. The proposed droop control coefficient is a linear function of the ROCOF. Therefore, the proposed scheme can adjust the control coefficient according to the varying ROCOF. Simulation results clearly demonstrate that the proposed droop control scheme shows better effectiveness in improving the maximum ROCOF and frequency nadir under various sizes of disturbance, even in a varying wind speed.

A Review of Model Predictive Controls Applied to Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems, connected vehicle, cruise control, lane keeping, Model Predictive Control, optimal control, path following
Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems (ADASs) are currently gaining particular attention in the automotive field, as enablers for vehicle energy consumption, safety, and comfort enhancement. Compelling evidence is in fact provided by the variety of related studies that are to be found in the literature. Moreover, considering the actual technology readiness, larger opportunities might stem from the combination of ADASs and vehicle connectivity. Nevertheless, the definition of a suitable control system is not often trivial, especially when dealing with multiple-objective problems and dynamics complexity. In this scenario, even though diverse strategies are possible (e.g., Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy, Rule-based strategy, etc.), the Model Predictive Control (MPC) turned out to be among the most effective ones in fulfilling the aforementioned tasks. Hence, the proposed study is meant to produce a comprehensive review of MPCs applied to scenarios where ADASs are exploited and... [more]

March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: building technologies, experimental demonstration, heat-pump control, MIQP, Model Predictive Control
It is considered necessary to implement advanced controllers such as model predictive control (MPC) to utilize the technical flexibility of a building polygeneration system to support the rapidly expanding renewable electricity grid. These can handle multiple inputs and outputs, uncertainties in forecast data, and plant constraints, amongst other features. One of the main issues identified in the literature regarding deploying these controllers is the lack of experimental demonstrations using standard components and communication protocols. In this original work, the economic-MPC-based optimal scheduling of a real-world heat pump-based building energy plant is demonstrated, and its performance is evaluated against two conventional controllers. The demonstration includes the steps to integrate an optimization-based supervisory controller into a typical building automation and control system with off-the-shelf HVAC components and usage of state-of-art algorithms to solve a mixed integer... A Novel Fuzzy PI Control Method for Variable Frequency Brushless Synchronous Generators
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: brushless synchronous generator, electric aircraft, fuzzy PI controller, generator control unit
With the application of more electric aircraft (MEA) technology, variable frequencies and high power ratings become import features of aero-generators. The brushless synchronous generator, which has a three-stage structure, is the most commonly used type of aero-generator. Due to the variation of operating conditions, the implementation of generator controllers becomes more and more difficult. In this paper, a state space model of a generator is derived and the influence of different operating conditions on the frequency response characteristics of the generator is revealed. Based on a fuzzy PI controller, an additional fuzzy logic controller is applied to modify the PI parameters of the voltage loop by introducing the generator speed to cope with the speed variation. Finally, the results of the simulations and experiments demonstrate that the dual fuzzy PI controller can improve both the steady-state and dynamic performance of the brushless synchronous generator, verifying the previou... Dynamics of Electromechanical Systems Containing Long Elastic Couplings and Safety of Their Operation
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control strategies, drive systems, dynamics of electromechanical systems, induction motor, mathematical modeling, rotational speed control, transmission shaft, vibration damping
The electromechanical systems under analysis include electric drives, working machines that perform specific tasks in the technological process, and working mechanisms that transmit mechanical power between the electric drive and the working machine. The vast majority of electric motors included in drive systems require rotational speed control. This task is most often performed with the use of closed-loop control structures based on speed controllers. A step or overly rapid change in the speed reference causes a temporary lock of the speed controller due to the applied limitations at its output. Particularly, unfavorable effects of such a lock can be observed in drive systems in which there is a long elastic coupling (transmission shaft) between the electric motor and the working machine. As a consequence, shaft torsion and accompanying twisting moments of considerable amplitudes appear. This article proposes an uncomplicated active torque limiter structure, which enables the uninterr... [more]

Optimal Control of Plug-In Electric Vehicles Charging for Composition of Frequency Regulation Services
March 6, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: ancillary services, frequency regulation, plug-in electric vehicles
This paper presents a novel control system for the participation of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) in the provisioning of ancillary services for frequency regulation, in a way that is transparent to the driver and harmonized with the smart charging service requirements. Given a power-frequency droop curve, which specifies how the set of PEVs collectively participate to the provisioning of the frequency regulation service (we call this curve a “global” droop curve), we propose an algorithm to compute “local” droop curves (one for each PEV), which are optimized according to the current status of the PEV and the current progress of the smart recharging session. Once aggregated, the local droop curves match the global one (so that the PEVs contribute as expected to the provisioning of the ancillary service). One innovative aspect of the proposed algorithm is that it is specifically designed to be interoperable with the algorithms that control the PEV recharging process; hence, it is tran... [more]

Keywords: explosion protection, explosive atmosphere, failure rate, functional safety, safety integrity level, variable frequency drive
Modern explosion protection equipment, protected by traditional explosion protection technology (as defined by the international electrotechnical commission (IEC) publication IEC60079-ff series standards) and electrical/electronic/programmable electronic (E/E/PE) safety-related systems, is becoming ever more complex in coal mine development and petrochemical industry; thus, the possibility of failures in their operation is also growing. It is well-known that E/E/PE safety-related systems can be used to actively control dangerous sources, with real and expected levels of reliability, if they have been qualified according to the IEC61508-ff series standards. To uniformly evaluate the safety integrity level (SIL) of the explosion protection function of traditional explosion protection technology and E/E/PE safety-related system technology, this study analyzed the ability of these types of protection to remove the ignition risk residual, evaluating the failure rates of safety devices. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: distribution area, free switching control strategy, multi-operation modes, multi-port energy router, power flow, virtual synchronous machine
For the distribution area with a high penetration rate of new energy, the traditional power supply system has some problems, such as a single form of power supply and low utilization of new energy. Because the multi-port energy router can realize the interconnection and complementation of multiple energy forms, it has become the key piece of equipment in the hybrid AC/DC distribution area. Nevertheless, restricted by the existing control strategy, the performance of the energy router in complex operation mode switching and coordinated control still needs to be further improved. To address this issue, the free switching control strategy is proposed in this paper. Firstly, the topology and model of the multi-port energy router are designed and established. Secondly, the operation mode of the system is analyzed, and the control strategy of each port is designed. Then, a reference power calculation method suitable for multi-mode operation is derived. Keywords: capacitor, current sharing, differential-mode transformer, FPGA, LED driver, multiple outputs, single input
A buck-type light-emitting diode (LED) driver is proposed herein. The proposed LED driver automatically possesses current sharing and high step-down voltage gain. Without complex control, the proposed LED driver, with a single input and multiple outputs, can achieve automatic current sharing of four-channel LED strings, even under the different number of LEDs of each LED string. Furthermore, as compared with the traditional four-phase interleaved buck converter with a single input and a single output having current sharing required, the proposed circuit has the duty cycle up to 0.5, not 0.25, meaning that under the same input voltage the latter has a wider output voltage range than that of the former. Above all, if the proposed circuit with N outputs, then it still has the duty cycle up to 0.5, not one over N as shown traditionally. Moreover, as compared with the current sharing based on the differential-mode transformer, the proposed circuit has no magnetic resetting loop required. In... [more]
