February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: bicycle traffic measurement, energy management, induction loop, microwave radar, perpendicular radar, vehicle counter, video recording
The work presents the methods of collecting and processing data with the use of devices used in individual measurement methods. Based on the collected video materials, the number of vehicles was determined, which at both measuring points actually exceeded each of the tested cross-sections of the bicycle path. More precise determination of the means of transport was divided into three categories: bicycles, electric scooters, and PT (personal transporters). The data collected with the use of each of the devices was properly processed and aggregated into a form that allows for their mutual comparison (they can be used to manage the energy of electric vehicles). Their greatest advantages and disadvantages were indicated, and external factors that had an impact on the size of the measurement error were identified. The cost of carrying out the traffic volume survey was also assessed, broken down into the measurement methods used. The purpose of this paper is to analyse and evaluate the metho... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: recycle, residues, Solid Refuse Fuel (SRF), waste management
Solid Refuse Fuel (SRF) manufacturing facilities process 4.72 million tons of waste annually. The residues generated after manufacturing SRF products account for 35−40% of the input waste, and most of them are finally disposed of in landfills. The process flow and management status of SRF manufacturing facilities were investigated, and the residues generated from SRF manufacturing facilities using municipaland industrial waste, respectively, were separated by particle size. The appropriate separation conditions for the residues according to the characteristics of the input raw materials were presented through the analysis of loss on ignition (LOI), organic foreign substance content, heating value, and carbon content. Based on this, the appropriate management criteria (draft) for the subsequent treatment of final residues were derived to improve recyclability. Residues generated in the SRF manufacturing process need to be additionally separated into combustibles and incombustibles throu... [more]

During the bioethanol production process, vast amounts of residues are generated as process waste. To extract more value from lignocellulosic biomass and improve process economics, these residues should be used as feedstock in additional processes for the production of energy or fuels. In this paper, barley straw was used for bioethanol production and the residues were valorized using anaerobic digestion (AD) or used for the production of heat and power by combustion. A traditional three-step bioethanol production process was used, and the biomass residues obtained from different stages of the process were analyzed. Finally, mass and energy balances were calculated to quantify material flow and assess the different technological routes for biomass utilization. Up to 90 kg of ethanol could be produced from 1 t of biomass and additional biogas and energy generated from processing residues can increase the energy yield to over 220%. The results show that in terms of energy output, combust... [more]

Previous studies identified that extracts of Talinum triangulare rich in flavonoids and phenolic acids showed antioxidative and immunomodulatory activities. In this study, the L9 orthogonal array was used to determine the optimal extraction conditions for water-extracted polysaccharides of T. triangulare (TTP) by hot reflux extraction and ultrasonic assisted extraction (UAE) methods. Results showed that while both extraction methods obtained a maximum polysaccharide yield of 3.1%, the optimal conditions for obtaining TTP was by UAE method. TTP was separated into large (LTTP) and small (STTP) molecular weights by dialysis. Since LTTP showed better effects than STTP in inducing macrophages to produce nitric oxide (NO) and indirectly inhibiting human cervical cancer HeLa cells, six different LTTP fractions were separated using anion-exchange chromatography. Contents of polysaccharides, triterpenoids, polyphenols, and proteins and molecular weights of major polysaccharide in each fraction... [more]

Environmental problems associated with the growing levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere due to the burning of fossil fuels to satisfy the high demand for energy are a pressing concern. Therefore, the design of new materials for carbon dioxide storage has received increasing research attention. In this work, we report the synthesis of three new Schiff bases containing a trimethoprim unit and the investigation of their application as adsorbents for carbon dioxide capture. The reaction of trimethoprim and aromatic aldehydes in acid medium gave the corresponding Schiff bases in 83%−87% yields. The Schiff bases exhibited surface areas ranging from 4.15 to 20.33 m2/g, pore volumes of 0.0036−0.0086 cm3/g, and average pore diameters of 6.64−1.4 nm. An excellent carbon dioxide uptake (27−46 wt%) was achieved at high temperature and pressure (313 K and 40 bar, respectively) using the Schiff bases. The 3-hydroxyphenyl-substituted Schiff base, which exhibited a meta-arrangement, provided the... [more]

Keywords: calcination temperature, Carbon Dioxide, Dry Reforming, methane, nickel particles
Ni-based catalysts supported on alumina derived from the pseudo-boehmite prepared by the impregnation method were employed for catalytic dry reforming of methane reaction at the temperature of 550−750 °C. The effect of calcination temperature on physicochemical properties such as the Ni dispersion, reduction degree, nickel crystallite sizes, and metal−support interaction of the catalysts was investigated. The characterization results show that increasing the catalyst calcination temperature leads to the formation of nickel-alumina spinel, which enhances the metal−support interaction and increases the reduction temperature. The nickel nanoparticle size decreases and the effective dispersion increases with the increasing calcination temperature from 450 °C to 750 °C due to the formation of nickel aluminate. The catalyst calcined at 750 °C exhibits the highest CH4 and CO2 conversion owing to the small Ni0 active sites and high Ni dispersion. In a 200 h stability test in dry reforming of m... [more]

Keywords: extrusion-cooking, gluten-free, pasta, polished rice
In the present study, we applied extrusion-cooking to polished rice flour so as to prepare gluten-free pasta. The aim of the work was to investigate the effect of feed moisture (28, 30 and 32%) and screw speed (60, 80 and 100 rpm) on selected rice pasta quality attributes (water absorption, cooking loss, firmness, stickiness and microstructure) and extrusion response (specific mechanical energy). Our results showed that feed moisture significantly affected all tested quality attributes of the rice pasta, while screw speed exhibited a significant effect on all quality attributes except cooking time and stickiness. Moreover, raising the feed moisture increased the cooking time, water absorption, cooking loss, hardness and stickiness, but decreased the firmness at high screw speed. In addition, increasing the screw speed enhanced the cooking loss and hardness, but diminished the water absorption and firmness of pasta with low feed moisture. Rice pasta prepared with 30% moisture content an... [more]

Transition metal hydroxides have attracted a lot of attention as the electrode materials for supercapacitors owing to their relatively high theoretical capacity, low cost, and facile preparation methods. However, their low intrinsic conductivity deteriorates their high-rate performance and cycling stability. Here, self-supported sheets-on-wire CuO@Ni(OH)2/Zn(OH)2 (CuO@NiZn) composite nanowire arrays were successfully grown on copper foam. The CuO nanowire backbone provided enhanced structural stability and a highly efficient electron-conducting pathway from the active hydroxide nanosheets to the current collector. The resulting CuO@NiZn as the battery-type electrode for supercapacitor application delivered a high capacity of 306.2 mAh g−1 at a current density of 0.8 A g−1 and a very stable capacity of 195.1 mAh g−1 at 4 A g−1 for 10,000 charge−discharge cycles. Furthermore, a quasi-solid-state hybrid supercapacitor (qss HSC) was assembled with active carbon, exhibiting 125.3 mAh g−1 at... [more]

Keywords: Machine Learning, material development, SAXS, sol-gel materials
The requirements for new materials are increasing with each new application, which, in most cases, means an enhancement in the complexity of the development process. Nanoporous sol-gel-based materials, especially aerogels, are promising candidates for thermal superinsulation, electrodes for energy conversion and storage or high-end adsorbers. Their synthesis and processing route is complex, and the relationship between the material/processing parameters and the resulting structural and physical properties is not straightforward. Using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) allows for fast structural characterization of both the gel and the resulting aerogel; combining these results with the respective physical properties of the aerogels and using these data as inputs for machine learning (ML) algorithms provide an approach to predict physical properties on the basis of a structural dataset. This data-driven strategy may be a feasible approach to speed up the development process. Thus, the... [more]

Hydrophobicity and superhydrophobicity with self-cleaning properties are well-known characteristics of several natural surfaces, such as the leaves of the sacred lotus plant (Nelumbo nucifera). To achieve a superhydrophobic state, micro- and nanometer scale topography should be realized on a low surface energy material, or a low surface energy coating should be deposited on top of the micro-nano topography if the material is inherently hydrophilic. Tailoring the surface chemistry and topography to control the wetting properties between extreme wetting states enables a palette of functionalities, such as self-cleaning, antifogging, anti-biofouling etc. A variety of surface topographies have been realized in polymers, ceramics, and metals. Metallic surfaces are particularly important in several engineering applications (e.g., naval, aircrafts, buildings, automobile) and their transformation to superhydrophobic can provide additional functionalities, such as corrosion protection, drag red... The heterogeneity of biogenic fuels, and especially biogenic residues with regard to water and ash content, particle size and particle size distribution is challenging for biomass combustion, and limits fuel flexibility. Online fuel characterization as a part of process control could help to optimize combustion processes, increase fuel flexibility and reduce emissions. In this research article, a concept for a new sensor module is presented and first tests are displayed to show its feasibility. The concept is based on the principle of hot air convective drying. The idea is to pass warm air with 90 °C through a bulk of fuel like wood chips and measure different characteristics such as moisture, temperatures and pressure drop over the bulk material as a function over time. These functions are the basis to draw conclusions and estimate relevant fuel properties. To achieve this goal, a test rig with a volume of 0.038 m3 was set up in the laboratory and a series of tests was performed with... [more]
