Anode Modification as an Alternative Approach to Improve Electricity Generation in Microbial Fuel Cells
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: anode modification, electrode materials, exoelectrogens, microbial community, microbial fuel cells, nanomaterials, Polymers
Sustainable production of electricity from renewable sources by microorganisms is considered an attractive alternative to energy production from fossil fuels. In recent years, research on microbial fuel cells (MFCs) technology for electricity production has increased. However, there are problems with up-scaling MFCs due to the fairly low power output and high operational costs. One of the approaches to improving energy generation in MFCs is by modifying the existing anode materials to provide more electrochemically active sites and improve the adhesion of microorganisms. The aim of this review is to present the effect of anode modification with carbon compounds, metallic nanomaterials, and polymers and the effect that these modifications have on the structure of the microbiological community inhabiting the anode surface. This review summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of individual materials as well as possibilities for using them for environmentally friendly production of elec... [more]

The Influence of Nanoparticles’ Conductivity and Charging on Dielectric Properties of Ester Oil Based Nanofluid
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: AC breakdown, alumina nanoparticles, conductivity, lightning impulse breakdown, nanofluid, partial discharge, silicon carbide
This study addresses the effect of nanoparticles’ conductivity and surface charge on the dielectric performance of insulating nanofluids. Dispersions of alumina and silicon carbide nanoparticles of similar size (~50 nm) and concentration (0.004% w/w) were prepared in natural ester oil. The stability of the dispersions was explored by dynamic light scattering. AC, positive and negative lightning impulse breakdown voltage, as well as partial discharge inception voltage of the nanofluid samples were measured and compared with the respective properties of the base oil. The obtained results indicate that the addition of SiC nanoparticles can lead to an increase in AC breakdown voltage and also enhance the resistance of the liquid to the appearance of partial discharge. On the other hand, the induction of positive charge from the Al2O3 nanoparticles could be the main factor leading to an improved positive Lightning Impulse Breakdown Voltage and worse performance at negative polarity.

The Use of Hypergeometric Functions in Hysteresis Modeling
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: ferromagnetic materials, hysteresis loop, Modelling
Accurate hysteresis models are necessary for modeling of magnetic components of devices such as transformers and motors. This study presents a hysteresis model with a convenient analytical form, based on hypergeometric functions with one free parameter, built upon a class of parameterized curves. The aim of this work is to explore suitability of the presented model for describing major and minor loops, as well as to demonstrate improved agreement between experimental and modeled hysteresis loops. The procedure for generating first order reversal curves is also discussed. The added parameter, introduced into the model, controls the shape of the model curve, especially near saturation. It can be adjusted to provide better agreement between measured and model curves. The model parameters are nonlinearly dependent; therefore, they are determined in a nonlinear curve fitting procedure. The choice of the initial approximation and a suitable set of constraints for the optimization procedure a... [more]

Probing the Effect of Titanium Substitution on the Sodium Storage in Na3Ni2BiO6 Honeycomb-Type Structure
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cathode material, honeycomb-layer, sodium-ion batteries, solid-solution
Na3Ni2BiO6 with Honeycomb structure suffers from poor cycle stability when applied as cathode material for sodium-ion batteries. Herein, the strategy to improve the stability is to substitute Ni and Bi with inactive Ti. Monoclinic Na3Ni2-xBi1-yTix+yO6 powders with different Ti content were successfully synthesized via sol gel method, and 0.3 mol of Ti was determined as a maximum concentration to obtain a phase-pure compound. A solid-solution in the system of O3-NaNi0.5Ti0.5O2 and O3-Na3Ni2BiO6 is obtained when this critical concentration is not exceeded. The capacity of the first desodiation process at 0.1 C of Na3Ni2BiO6 (~93 mAh g−1) decreases with the increasing Ti concentration to ~77 mAh g−1 for Na3Ni2Bi0.9Ti0.1O6 and to ~82 mAh g−1 for Na3Ni0.9Bi0.8Ti0.3O6, respectively. After 100 cycles at 1 C, a better electrochemical kinetics is obtained for the Ti-containing structures, where a fast diffusion effect of Na+-ions is more pronounced. April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: air side, interconnect, MCO, operating conditions, SOFC
Metallic interconnects represent the main component of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stack in terms of weight and volume. They are typically made of ferritic stainless steel (FSS) coated on the air side. At the stack operating conditions, the interconnect is exposed to a dual atmosphere: air at the cathode side; fuel (a hydrogen-rich mixture) at the anode side. The stacks considered in this study were field operated in reformed natural gas for 5000, 9000 and 20,000 h respectively. The analyzed interconnects are made from CROFER22APU and coated on the air side with Co-Mn base spinel. One interconnect has been studied for each stack by sampling and preparing cross section the inlet and outlet positions. The samples were characterized by SEM-EDXS in order to investigate the evolution of the interconnect at the air side. The interaction between the metal substrate and the coating is investigated highlighting the formation of chromia based thermal grown oxide (at the FSS/coating interface)... [more]

Effect of Dry and Wet Cycles on the Strength Characteristics of Biochar−Clay Mixture
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: biochar–clay mixture, dry and wet cycles, landfill covering layer, shear strength
Biochar is an economical and environmentally friendly “green material” with potential benefits in greenhouse gas emission reduction, soil performance improvement, and environmental restoration. Mixing biochar with clay and using it as a landfill cover can effectively reduce the escape of greenhouse gases into the air, which is important for environmental protection. It is suggested that biochar should be mixed with clay and used as a landfill covering layer. In this study, the shear strength was obtained by direct shear test, and the shear strength characteristics of biochar−clay mixture under the influence of different dry and wet cycles, biochar contents, and moisture conditions were studied. The results show that the shear strength of the biochar−clay mixture in the saturated state decreases with increasing wet and dry cycles, with shear strength decreases ranging from 6% to 19%. The cohesion and internal friction angles of the clays and mixtures show a decreasing trend under wet an... [more]

Eco-Friendly Synthesis of TiO2/ZIF-8 Composites: Characterization and Application for the Removal of Imidacloprid from Wastewater
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: heterogeneous photocatalysis, imidacloprid, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), TiO2, ZIF-8
The aim of this work was to develop hybrid TiO2/ZIF-8 photocatalysts and test their activity for the removal of agricultural pollutants in water. The hybrid photocatalysts were prepared by an innovative method involving hydrothermal synthesis at 150 °C using a mechanochemically synthesized zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) and titanium tetraisopropoxide as a titanium dioxide (TiO2) precursor. Three composite photocatalysts with different mass fractions of titanium dioxide (5, 50, and 95 wt%) were synthesized and characterized, and their adsorption and photocatalytic properties investigated for the removal of imidacloprid. The equilibrium adsorption test showed that ZIF-8 is a good adsorbent and can adsorb 65% of the model component under the working conditions used in this work, while the hybrid photocatalysts can adsorb 1−3% of the model component. It is assumed that the adsorption is hindered by the TiO2 layer on the surface of ZIF-8, which blocks the interactions of ZIF-8 and i... [more]

Resonance-Enhanced Pulsing Water Injection for Improved Oil Recovery: Micromodel Experiments and Analysis
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: enhanced oil recovery (EOR), micromodel, oil mobility, pulsing water injection, resonance
Enhanced oil recovery (EOR) is a crucial technology in the petroleum industry, influenced by several factors, including flooding fluids and methods. The adjustment of injection strategies and the application of vibration stimulation can significantly impact oil recovery, especially residual oil. In this study, we conducted experiments using a glass micromodel to investigate the effect of pulsing water injection on oil recovery. Our results show that when the pulse frequency matches the natural frequency of the micromodel, resonance occurs during the two-phase flow of pulse driving, which causes an increase in the amplitude of oscillation, enhances the mobility of oil, and improves recovery. The efficiency of the kinetic energy of displacement is also improved. However, when the frequency is 3 Hz, the absence of resonance leads to the opposite effect. In addition, we found that a greater amplitude increases the fluidity of oil. These findings have significant implications for the design... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: gradients, monodisperse PEG, polyethylene glycol, preparative chromatography
The isolation of single homologs of polyethylene glycol by preparative reversed-phase chromatography is investigated. A thermodynamic model developed accurately previously describes the retention times of individual homologs as function of their size, temperature, and mobile phase composition under linear, diluted conditions. The model is extended to predict limiting retention times for linear gradient operation in preparative applications. Isocratic and gradient-based separations are studied under strongly overloaded conditions. Baseline separation of homologs up to 3000 g/mol is demonstrated. Quantitative production of pure single homologs up to molar weights of 1000 g/mol was performed using an automated setup.

Enhanced Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Wheat Straw to Improve Reducing Sugar Yield by Novel Method under Mild Conditions
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: deep eutectic solvents, enzymatic hydrolysis, inorganic base, pretreatment, wheat straw
Wheat straw is a suitable source material for bioethanol production. Removing lignin and hemicellulose in wheat straw to improve enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency is essential because of its complex structure. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have become substitutes for ionic liquids (ILs), with the characteristics of good biocompatibility, simple synthesis procedure and low cost. However, the process of removing lignin and hemicellulose using present DESs requires a high operation temperature or long operation time. Therefore, we studied a novel method under mild conditions for screening a series of novel DESs based on an inorganic base to remove lignin and hemicellulose in wheat straw. In this work, the effect of DES type, the pH of the DESs, the operation temperature and operation time for enhancing enzymatic hydrolysis, and the crystal structure and the chemical structure and surface morphology of wheat straw were investigated. Subject: Materials
Keywords: cavern groups, deformation of the surrounding rock, large section, stratified reinforcement ring
The control difficulty of whole coal cavern groups is greatly increased due to the characteristics of soft rock with low strength, large sections, and the mutual influence of crossed cavern groups. The large section gas storage cavern group is taken as the research background. In this paper, the equivalent circle method is used to solve the loose circle of a rectangular roadway, and numerical calculation is used to obtain the deformation and stress distribution laws of the surrounding rock under the excavation conditions of large section whole coal cavern groups (WCCG). The deformation and failure mechanisms of the surrounding rock are revealed under the linkage impact between large section whole coal cavern groups. The stratified reinforcement ring concept of “long cable-bolt-grouting” (LBG) was proposed for the stability control of surrounding rock in the WCCG. Subject: Materials
Keywords: adhesion, photopolymerization, pressure-sensitive adhesives, removable PSA, telomerization
Removable pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) are used in the production of self-adhesive materials such as protective films, masking tapes or biomedical electrodes. This work presents a new and environmentally friendly method of obtaining this type of adhesive materials, i.e., photochemically induced free radical telomerization. Adhesive binders to removable PSAs, i.e., the photoreactive acrylic telomer syrups (ATS) were prepared from n-butyl acrylate, acrylic acid, and 4-acrylooxybenzophenone. Tetrabromomethane (CBr4) or bromotrichloromethane (CBrCl3) were used as the telogens. ATS was modified with unsaturated polybutadiene resin and a radical photoinitiator. Adhesive compositions were coated onto a carrier and UV cross-linked. The effects of the chemical nature of telomers (i.e., terminal Br or Cl atoms) and their molecular weight (K-value), as well as the cross-linking degree on adhesive properties of PSAs, were studied. It was found that with the increase in telogen content in th... [more]

Kinetic Aspects of Suzuki Cross-Coupling Using Ligandless Pd Nanoparticles Embedded in Aromatic Polymeric Matrix
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: 4-bromoanisole, hyper-cross-linked polystyrene, palladium, phenylboronic acid, Suzuki cross-coupling
During the last decades, palladium nanoparticles (Pd(0) NPs) and Pd(II) compounds were shown to be attractive catalysts for fine organic synthesis. Nanostructured Pd(0) or Pd(II) catalysts have a relatively low environmental impact, but, at the same time, they are indispensable for such processes as Suzuki cross-coupling. This paper describes the preparation of Pd(0) or Pd(II) supported/embedded in hyper-cross-linked polystyrene (HPS) and compares their activity in Suzuki cross-coupling between phenylboronic acid and 4-bromoanisole. Obviously, the palladium charge (Pd(0) ↔ Pd(II)) changes continuously during the reaction catalytic cycle. It would seem that the use of the starting palladium in the form of Pd(0) or Pd(II) should not affect the reaction’s kinetic laws for both catalysts, but their special individuality is manifested between them. Nanoparticulate Pd(0) catalysts are stable during the reaction. In contrast, catalysts based on Pd(II) are extremely active in the initial perio... [more]

Novel Non-Toxic Highly Antibacterial Chitosan/Fe(III)-Based Nanoparticles That Contain a Deferoxamine—Trojan Horse Ligands: Combined Synthetic and Biological Studies
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: antibacterial activity, chitosan, deferoxamine, iron(III), nanoparticles, toxicity
In this study, we prepared chitosan/Fe(III)/deferoxamine nanoparticles with unimodal size distribution (hydrodynamic diameter ca. 250 nm, zeta potential ca. 32 mV). The elaborated nanoparticles are characterized by outstanding in vitro and in vivo antibacterial activity, which exceeds even that of commercial antibiotics ampicillin and gentamicin. Moreover, the nanoparticles are non-toxic. We found that the introduction of iron ions into the chitosan matrix increases the ability of the resulting nanoparticles to disrupt the integrity of the membranes of microorganisms in comparison with pure chitosan. The introduction of deferoxamine into the obtained nanoparticles sharply expands their effect of destruction the bacterial membrane. The obtained antibacterial nanoparticles are promising for further preclinical studies.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: concentralized distribution logistics, cruise-building imported materials, failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA), risk assessment, risk prioritization, rule-based Bayesian network (RBN)
The concentralized distribution logistics in cruise-building imported materials (CDL-CIMs) constitute a complex process that requires a high degree of coordination between the multi-link and multi-participator. Delayed delivery, materials damaged, and cost overruns occur because of increasing uncertainties and risks, which may cause disjointedness in cruise construction planning. Therefore, it is essential to conduct a risk assessment of the CDL-CIMs to examine their adverse impacts on cruise construction. Drawing on the advantages of the failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) method in risk assessment, an effective and efficient model is developed using a novel hybrid method in this paper, namely the rule-based Bayesian network (RBN) and utility function. The approach has its superiorities in dealing with vague and uncertainty risk information.
