Experimental and Theoretical Investigation of the Natural Convection Heat Transfer Coefficient in Phase Change Material (PCM) Based Fin-and-Tube Heat Exchanger
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: fin-and-tube, heat exchanger, heat transfer coefficient, melting, natural convection, phase change material (PCM)
Latent heat thermal energy storage systems allow storing large amounts of energy in relatively small volumes. Phase change materials (PCMs) are used as a latent heat storage medium. However, low thermal conductivity of most PCMs results in long melting (charging) and solidification (discharging) processes. This study focuses on the PCM melting process in a fin-and-tube type copper heat exchanger. The aim of this study is to define analytically natural convection heat transfer coefficient and compare the results with experimental data. The study shows how the local heat transfer coefficient changes in different areas of the heat exchanger and how it is affected by the choice of characteristic length and boundary conditions. It has been determined that applying the calculation method of the natural convection occurring in the channel leads to results that are closer to the experiment. Using this method, the average values of the heat transfer coefficient (have) during the entire charging... [more]

Effects of SiO2 Nanoparticle Dispersion on The Heat Storage Property of the Solar Salt for Solar Power Applications
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Energy, force, mechanisms, molten salt, nanoparticle, specific heat capacity
The effects of SiO2 nanoparticles on the heat storage properties of Solar Salt (NaNO3-KNO3) are studied using experimental and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The experiment results show the specific heat capacity of the molten salt-based nanofluids is higher than that of the pure base salt. We focus on the inference regarding the possible mechanisms behind the enhancement of the specific heat capacity which are considered more acceptable by the majority of researchers, the energy and force in the system are analyzed by MD simulations. The results demonstrate that the higher specific heat capacity of the nanoparticle is not the reason leading to the heat storage enhancement. Additionally, the analysis of potential energy and system configuration shows that the other possible mechanisms (i.e., interfacial thermal resistance theory and compressed layer theory) are only superficial. The forces between the nanoparticle atoms and base salt ions construct the constraint of the base salt... [more]

Does Rheology of Bingham Fluid Influence Upscaling of Flow through Tight Porous Media?
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: Bingham fluid, digital rock analysis, representative element volume, upscaling
Non-Newtonian fluids may cause nonlinear seepage even for a single-phase flow. Through digital rock technologies, the upscaling of this non-Darcy flow can be studied; however, the requirements for scanning resolution and sample size need to be clarified very carefully. This work focuses on Bingham fluid flow in tight porous media by a pore-scale simulation on CT-scanned microstructures of tight sandstones. A bi-viscous model is used to depict the Bingham fluid. The results show that when the Bingham fluid flows through a rock sample, the flowrate increases at a parabolic rate when the pressure gradient is small and then increases linearly with the pressure gradient. As a result, an effective permeability and a start-up pressure gradient can be used to characterize this flow behavior. By conducting flow simulations at varying sample sizes, we obtain the representative element volume (REV) for effective permeability and start-up pressure gradient. It is found that the REV size for the ef... [more]

Effects of MgO Nanoparticles on Thermo-Physical Properties of LiNO3-NaNO3-KNO3 for Thermal Energy Storage
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: nanofluid, ternary nitrate salt, thermal energy storage, thermal properties
Molten salt LiNO3-NaNO3-KNO3 has been investigated as heat transfer and thermal storage media for its low melting point and good thermal performance. In this paper, nanofluids were synthesized by dispersing MgO nanoparticles into LiNO3-NaNO3-KNO3, and the effects of nanoparticles on thermal properties were studied with different sizes (20−100 nm) and mass percent concentrations (0.5−2.0 wt.%). The addition of nanoparticles had little effect on melting temperature, and led to a slight increase in enthalpy of fusion by 2.0−5.5%. Compared with base salt, the density of nanofluid increased a little by 0.22−1.15%. The scanning electron microscope (SEM) test implied that nubby and punctate microstructures were responsible for larger surface area and interfacial energy, which could lead to the improvement of specific heat capacity reaching 2.6−10.6%. The heat transfer characteristics remarkably increased with the addition of nanoparticles, and the enhancement of average thermal diffusivity an... [more]

The Beneficial Effect of the Addition of Fly Ash on Reduction of the Size of Microcracks in the ITZ of Concrete Composites under Dynamic Loading
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: concrete composite, dynamic loading, fly ash (FA), interfacial transition zone (ITZ), microcrack, scanning electron microscope (SEM), width of the microcrack (Wc)
The paper presents results of tests on the effect of the addition of fly ash (FA) in the amounts of 0%, 20%, and 30% by weight of cement on the interfacial microcracks in concrete composites subjected to dynamic loads. The analyses were carried out based on the results of the microstructural tests using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The average width of the microcracks (Wc) in the interfacial transition zone (ITZ) of coarse aggregate with cement matrix was evaluated. During the studies beneficial effect of the addition of FA on reduction of the size of Wc in the ITZ of concrete composites under dynamic loading were observed. Based on obtained test results, it was found that using the 20% FA additive causes favorable changes in the microstructure of mature concrete. In this composite, the average value of Wc was lower by more than 40% compared to the result obtained for the reference concrete. In contrast, concrete containing 30% FA additive had greater microcracks in the ITZ ar... [more]

Implications of Nonlinear Material Parameters on the Dielectric Loss under Harmonic Distorted Voltages
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: dielectric loss, distorted voltage, epoxy polymer, field grading material, harmonics, medium frequency, silicone rubber, total harmonic distortion
The increasing number of power electronic devices in electrical grids may lead to harmonic distorted voltages, which are considered to be possible causes of component failures. In this study, the dielectric losses of epoxy polymer and functionally filled silicone rubber (f-SiR) samples are investigated under harmonic distorted voltages in terms of their dielectric losses and the consequent heat source density within the material. The results suggest that the epoxy polymer samples behave linearly to the electric field strength and therefore allow good predictability of the dielectric losses. The investigated f-SiR samples exhibit a nonlinear behaviour when an electric field threshold is exceeded. The subsequent direct loss measurements under harmonic distorted voltage reveal a sharp rise of the dielectric loss with increasing electrical field strength. This leads to a higher risk of excessive heat in the material when harmonics are present. In conclusion, the investigation highlights th... [more]

Application of a Magnetic Field in Saturated Film Boiling of a Magnetic Nanofluid (MNF) under Reduced Gravity
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: enhanced heat transfer, film boiling, magnetic nanofluid (MNF), reduced gravity
To overcome the problem of abnormally large bubbles and the large reduction of heat flux under low gravity, the computational model of magnetic nanofluid (MNF) boiling flow was used to systematically study the thermodynamic characteristics of an MNF-saturated film boiling with and without the magnetic field. This study found that in the absence of a magnetic field, the decrease of the gravity level makes the bubble size increase and the bubble departure time increase, and the lower the gravity level, the worse the boiling heat transfer. However, after applying the magnetic field, bubble size decreases significantly and the bubble departure time is shortened. As the magnetic field intensity increases, the difference in bubble size and heat transfer characteristics between different gravity levels becomes smaller and smaller, which shows that for the boiling flow of MNF under low gravity levels, applying a magnetic field can effectively avoid the appearance of abnormally large bubbles, e... Subject: Materials
Keywords: composite material, metal loss defect, pipeline, repair system
Pipe corrosion is a frequent phenomenon, and if repairs are delayed it could lead to environmental damage. Drilling activities can expand only when sufficient surface transportation capacity for the produced fluids exists and thus good maintenance of the transportation system is important. Furthermore, the technology presented herein can be easily upgraded as a repair solution for surface casing section below the casing head, which have been repeatedly reported as being highly corroded for older wells. This paper presents the results of the research work carried out by the authors in order to evaluate the design methods of the modern composite material systems used to repair steel pipes carrying hydrocarbons upon which local metal loss defects (generated by corrosion and/or erosion processes) have been detected. The pipe repair technologies consisting of the application of composite material wraps (made of a polymeric matrix and reinforcing fabric) are perceived as being advantageous a... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: breakthrough curves, cryogenic separation, MOFs, Olefin-Paraffin Separation/paraffin, pressure swing adsorption, propylene, propyne, Toth model, vacuum swing adsorption
Propylene is one of the world’s most important basic olefin raw material used in the production of a vast array of polymers and other chemicals. The need for high purity grade of propylene is essential and traditionally achieved by the very energy-intensive cryogenic separation. In this study, a pillared inorganic anion SIF62− was used as a highly selective C3H4 due to the square grid pyrazine-based structure. Single gas adsorption revealed a very high C3H4 uptake value (3.32, 3.12, 2.97 and 2.43 mmol·g−1 at 300, 320, 340 and 360 K, respectively). The values for propylene for the same temperatures were 2.73, 2.64, 2.31 and 1.84 mmol·g−1, respectively. Experimental results were obtained for the two gases fitted using Langmuir and Toth models. The former had a varied degree of representation of the system with a better presentation of the adsorption of the propylene compared to the propyne system. Generating Electricity from Natural Evaporation Using PVDF Thin Films Incorporating Nanocomposite Materials
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: electricity generation, evaporation, particles, PVDF composites, streaming potential
Natural evaporation has recently come under consideration as a viable source of renewable energy. Demonstrations of the validity of the concept have been reported for devices incorporating carbon-based nanocomposite materials. In this study, we investigated the possibility of using polymer thin films to generate electricity from natural evaporation. We considered a polymeric system based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). Porous PVDF films were created by incorporating a variety of nanocomposite materials into the polymer structure through a simple mixing procedure. Three nanocomposite materials were considered: carbon nanotubes, graphene oxide, and silica. The evaporation-induced electricity generation was confirmed experimentally under various ambient conditions. Among the nanocomposite materials considered, mesoporous silica (SBA-15) was found to outperform the other two materials in terms of open-circuit voltage, and graphene oxide generated the highest short-circuit current. April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: graphene–polyimide composite, hybrid composite material, nickel oxide, porous composite structure, pseudocapacitance, specific capacitance
Polyimide-graphene nanosheet composite electrodes are rigid and dense and, therefore, exhibit moderate electrochemical properties. The electrochemical properties of polyimide-graphene nanosheet electrodes were remarkably improved by creating voids in the composite followed by the insertion of nickel oxide into the composites. Nickel oxide particles were electrodeposited onto the porous graphene/poly(amic acid) composite, containing poly (acrylic resin). The hybrid composite was then subjected to thermal treatment at ≥ 300 °C to simultaneously complete imidization and degrade the poly (acrylic resin). Cyclic Voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used to study the eletrochemical properties of the composite electrode material. It is shown that remarkable improvement in the electrochemical behavior of the hybrid composite occurred due to the removal of poly(acrylic acid) and the insertion of NiO particles into the polyimide matrix. Effects of the Wall Properties on the Cooling Efficiency in a Thermosyphon Containing PCM Suspensions
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: heat transfer, latent heat, phase change material, thermosyphon, wall material
This study explores the effects of pipe wall properties (thermal conductivity k and wall thickness tw) on the heat transfer performance of a rectangular thermosyphon with a phase change material (PCM) suspension and a geometric configuration (aspect ratio = 1; dimensionless heating section length = 0.8; dimensionless relative elevation between the cooling and the heating sections = 2) that ensures the optimum heat transfer efficiency in the cooling section. The following parameter ranges are studied: the dimensionless loop wall thickness (0 to 0.5), wall-to-fluid thermal conductivity ratio (0.1 to 100), modified Rayleigh number (1010 to 1011), and volumetric fraction of PCM particles (0 to 10%). The results show that appropriate selection of k and tw can lead to improved heat transfer effectiveness in the cooling section of the PCM suspension-containing rectangular thermosyphon.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: end of life tires, energy recovery, material recycling, rubber, textile fibers
Annually, approximately 3 billion tires are commercially transacted worldwide each year and an equivalent amount is disposed of by the end of their life. Despite the increase in the life of tires and the global economic and pandemic crisis, the number of discarded tires is going to rise further due to the increasing demand for vehicles worldwide (approximately 5 billion tires by the end of 2030). The obsolete methods of tire disposal, including landfill, burning, etc., are a responsible for environmental issues (harmful substances production, air and soil pollution) and for the transmission of various diseases. Nowadays, approximately 70% of the total tires at the end of their life (ELTs) is recovered. The largest percentage of the recovered ELTs is intended for energy production or recovery as a fuel in cement industries or can be used for the production of various materials. A significant amount (approximately 95%) of the discarded ELTs can be reused. The products from the processing... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: CO dissociation, density functional theory, Fischer–Tropsch synthesis, iron carbide, orthorhombic Fe7C3(001), CO adsorption
Fischer−Tropsch synthesis (FTS), which converts CO and H2 into useful hydrocarbon products, has attracted considerable attention as an efficient method to replace crude oil resources. Fe-based catalysts are mainly used in industrial FTS, and Fe7C3 is a common carbide phase in the FTS reaction. However, the intrinsic catalytic properties of Fe7C3 are theoretically unknown. Therefore, as a first attempt to understand the FTS reaction on Fe7C3, direct CO* dissociation on orthorhombic Fe7C3(001) (o-Fe7C3(001)) surfaces was studied using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. A Nonlinear Viscoelastic Model for the Yielding of Gelled Waxy Crude Oil
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: fractal gels, nonlinear viscoelasticity, rheological model, waxy crude oil, yielding
We explore some rheological aspects of the yielding of gelled waxy crude oil on the basis of a fractal model for the structural description of the waxy gel and Marrucci’s model for the time evolution of the stress with mixed elastic and viscous effects. With some parameters of the model directly obtained from classic rheometry, and others by fitting the parameters to the experimental data of one shear-rate condition, the flow curves for another shear-rate condition are predicted. Both theoretical curves—the fitting and the predicted ones—share the basic features of the experimental ones. Comparison with results of Maxwell model shows that Marrucci’s model used here leads to much better results, as it incorporates nonlinear viscoelasticity of waxy crude gels in the stress evolution equation. The strain dependence of the elastic modulus also plays a relevant role on the prediction of the model, suggesting a double-network contribution for very small strain values. Switchable ethoxylated amine surfactants are readily soluble in CO2 and high-saline brines. The objective of the current work is to maximize the foamability and stability of CO2 foam at 150 °F (65 °C) through adjustments in the surfactant concentration, pH, and brine salinity. From the results, the authors recommend potential applications of Ethomeen C12 (EC12) for CO2 foam in the oil/gas industry. Foam stability tests helped determine the optimum parameters for CO2 foam stability at 77 °F (25 °C) and 150 °F (65 °C). Latent heat storage (LHS) represents a valuable technology for the integration of intermittent renewable energy sources in existing and future energy systems. Improvements in LHS can be sought by enhancing heat transfer efficiency, compactness and diminishing the environmental impact of storage systems. In this paper, direct contact latent heat storage (DC-LHS) using esters as phase change material (PCM) is proposed as a promising compact storage technology to achieve high performance both in terms of heat transfer and sustainability. The technology allows for the heat transfer fluid (HTF) to flow directly through the PCM, forming a large amount of small droplets and thus providing a large heat exchange surface area between the two materials. At the same time, using biobased esters as PCM, gives the technology clear ecological advantages when compared to alternative types of compact energy storage.
