February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: resourcing treatment, three-phase AC arc plasma, waste printed circuit boards
Accumulation of electronic waste (e-waste) will place a heavy burden on the environment without proper treatment; however, most ingredients contained in it are useful, and it could bring great economic benefits when recycled. A three-phase alternating current (AC) arc plasma pyrolysis device was designed for resourcing treatment of waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs). This paper focuses on the analysis of plasma pyrolysis gas products, and the results showed that the plasma could operate stably, and overcame the problems of the poor continuity and low energy of single-arc discharge. Air-plasma would generate NOx contaminants, burn the organics, and oxidize the metals; therefore, air had not been selected as a working gas. Ar-plasma can break the long chains of organic macromolecules to make a combustible gas. Moreover, the strong adhesion between the metals and fiberglass boards would be destroyed, which facilitates subsequent separation. Ar/H2-plasma promoted the decrease of carbon d... [more]

Keywords: AI, ELM, EO, MARS, PSO, shallow foundation
The nature of soil varies horizontally as well as vertically, owing to the process of the formation of soil. Thus, ensuring the safe design of geotechnical structures has been a major challenge. In shallow foundations, conducting field tests is expensive and time-consuming and often conducted on significantly scaled-down models. Empirical models, too, have been found to be the least reliable in the literature. The study proposes AI-based techniques to predict the bearing capacity of a shallow foundation, simulated using the datasets obtained in experiments conducted in different laboratories in the literature. The results of the ELM-EO and ELM-PSO hybrid models are compared with that of the ELM and MARS models. The performance of the models is analyzed and compared with each other using various performance parameters. The models are graded to each other using rank analysis and the visual interpretations are provided using error matrices and REC curves. ELM-EO is concluded to be the bes... [more]

Keywords: characteristic model, linear golden-section adaptive control, model-based design, permanent magnet synchronous motor
Permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is a multi-variable, strongly coupled, nonlinear complex system. It is usually difficult to establish an accurate mathematical model, and the introduction of new complex algorithms will increase the difficulty of embedded code development. In order to solve this problem, we establish the characteristic model of permanent magnet synchronous motor in this paper, and the speed control scheme of the linear golden-section adaptive control and integral compensation, which is adopted. Finally, using the model-based design (MBD) method, how to build the simulink embedded code automatic generation model is introduced in detail, and then we complete the PMSM speed control physical verification experiment. Simulation and experimental results show that compared with traditional proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control, the speed control accuracy of PMSM is improved about 3.8 times. Meanwhile, the development method based on the model design can incre... [more]

Keywords: discrete element method, parameter calibration, redrying, stacking angle, tobacco strips, void ratio
To study the contact parameters of the tobacco strips during redrying, in this study, the funnel stacking test is used to determine the stacking angle, and the discrete element method is used to simulate the formation process of the stacking angle, to calibrate and verify the physical and contact parameters of tobacco strips. The Placket−Burman test was used to screen out the parameters that had significant effects on the stacking angle. The regression response surface model between the stacking angle and contact parameters was established by Central Composite Design using the stacking angle from physical tests as the response index. The test results show that static and rolling friction coefficients between tobacco strips have significant effects on the test results, so these two parameters must be accurately calibrated. Finally, the accuracy and validity of the calibrated tobacco strips contact parameters were verified by comparing the stacking angle and void ratio of physical and si... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric drive, hyperstability, nonlinear systems
The article considers a generalized block diagram of electromechanical systems: electric drives. It is shown that all their elements have significant nonlinearities that cannot be neglected when designing systems with maximum accuracy and speed. A method for taking into account the influence of nonlinearities on the electric drive characteristics, the method of nonlinear transfer functions and families of frequency characteristics, is proposed. It is shown how these nonlinear transfer functions make it possible to form correction and control systems for electric drives in the modes of processing task signals and in the modes of parrying the load.

Keywords: bubble column, bundle of heat exchanging tubes, Fischer-Tropsch process, heat transfer coefficient, sophisticated heat transfer technique, tube configurations
An experimental investigation was conducted to examine, for the first time, the influences of using different designs of tube arrangements on the local heat transfer coefficient (LHTC) in a bubble column (with a diameter of 0.13 m) equipped densely with a bundle of tubes. The effect of using two different designs of tube arrangements has been examined for a broad range of gas flow rates using a sophisticated heat transfer technique. The obtained results indicate that the LHTC increases significantly with increasing the gas velocity, regardless of the design and installation of the tubes in the column. Additionally, the shape of the LHTC’s profiles alters considerably by the presence of a bundle of tubes and their arrangements. Moreover, the results indicate that the square tube pitch arrangement provides uniform heat transfer profiles, which enhance the performance of the bubble column reactor by 30%. Furthermore, the heat transfer profiles were found to be varied with the axial height... [more]

Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, droplet population balance, liquid–liquid extraction, mass transfer, multiphase flows, pulsed column, pulsed sieve-plate extraction column, rotating disc column, solvent extraction
In this work, the GEneralised Multifluid Modelling Approach (GEMMA) is applied to the simulation of liquid−liquid extraction in a Rotating Disc Column (RDC) and a Pulsed Sieve-plate Extraction Column (PSEC). A mass transfer modelling methodology is developed, in which the multiphase flows, droplet size distribution and dispersed phase holdup predicted with computational fluid dynamics are coupled to mass transfer correlations to predict the overall mass transfer. The numerical results for the stage-averaged dispersed phase holdup, Sauter mean droplet diameter and axial solute concentration in the RDC and PSEC agree with experimental observations. The proposed modelling method provides an accurate predictive tool for complex multiphase flows, such as those observed in intensified liquid−liquid extraction, and provides an alternative approach to column design using empirical correlations or pilot plant study.

Keywords: acid fracturing, differential temperature stress, elastic-plastic analysis, HPHT wells, micro annulus, oil-well cement
The plastic deformation and interface micro annulus of oil-well cement during acid fracturing are key reasons for the failure of the wellbore seal and sustained casing pressure. However, most of the existing research ignores the influence of the wellbore cooling effect during acid fracturing, owing to which, the design conditions in the theoretical analysis may be inconsistent with those of the actual wellbore, and the calculation results may be biased. In this study, a novel elastoplastic mechanical model of the cement sheath was established. This model can analyze the yield state of the cement sheath under the influence of three-dimensional principal stress and consider the effect of the differential temperature stress on the interface debonding of the cement sheath from the beginning to the end of acid fracturing. Moreover, the generation mechanism and development law of the interface micro annulus were clarified. The findings indicated that the influence of the intermediate princip... [more]

Keywords: adsorbent regeneration, kaolinite clay dealumination, organic dye removal, porous silica, Rhodamine B adsorption, wastewater treatment
This manuscript deals with the thermal and chemical modification of a natural kaolinite that shows excellent performance in the capture of a cationic organic pollutant from the aqueous phase. Kaolinite was calcined at 700 °C and treated with HCl to remove aluminium and to obtain a siliceous material. The structural changes and the physico-chemical properties of the materials at different stages of thermal and chemical modification were investigated with several techniques, including XRPD, MAS-NMR, SEM-EDX, FT-IR, and N2 physisorption at 77 K. The ability of the parent kaolinite and siliceous material to capture the organic dye, Rhodamine B, from the aqueous phase was investigated by means of UV-Vis spectroscopy. The siliceous material exhibited better adsorption capacity with respect to the parent kaolinite. Finally, the functional stability of the siliceous material was tested over three cycles of regeneration and adsorption.

Keywords: acid-oxidative hydrolysis, biomass delignification, experimental design, urban waste
This work is focused on optimising a low-temperature delignification as holocellulose purification pretreatment of Platanus acerifolia leaf waste for second-bioethanol production. Delignification was accomplished by acid-oxidative digestion using green reagents: acetic acid and 30% hydrogen peroxide 1:1. The effect of reaction time (30−90 min), temperature (60−90 °C), and solid loading (5−15 g solid/20 g liquid) on delignification and solid fraction yield were studied. The process parameters were optimised using the Box−Behnken experimental design. The highest attained lignin removal efficiency was larger than 80%. The optimised conditions of delignification, while maximising holocellulose yield, pointed to using the minimum temperature of the examined range. Analysis of variance on the solid fraction yield and the lignin removal suggested a linear model with a negative influence of the temperature on the yield. Furthermore, a negative effect of the solid loading and low effect of temp... [more]

Keywords: accident reconstruction, driver injury, multi-objective optimization, pre-tensioned force-limiting seatbelt, small offset collision
A combination of airbag, seatbelt, and other restraint systems greatly reduces injury to drivers in small offset collisions. However, the airbag causes accidental injury to the driver in the deployment process. To maximize the protection effect of the restraint system on the driver, this study proposes a pre-tensioned force-limiting seatbelt. A small offset collision accident with video information was simulated by using a Neon sedan and the THUMS (v.4.0.2) finite element model. The effectiveness of the accident model and the matching use of a pre-tensioned force-limiting seatbelt and airbag for driver protection were verified. To obtain the best parameter matching of protection effect, first, the seatbelt force-limiting A, pre-tensioned force B, pre-tensioned time C, airbag ignition time D, and mass flow coefficient E were selected as influencing factors, and orthogonal tests with different factor levels were designed. Then, the direct analysis method was applied to analyze the influe... [more]

Keywords: centrifugal compressor, droplet evaporation, flow angle, two-phase flow, wet compression
In this study, to analyze the effect of wet compression technology on the aero-thermodynamic performance of a centrifugal compressor, a numerical analysis study was conducted on the design point and off-design point. Wet compression technology sprays water droplets at the inlet of the compressor. During the compression process, water droplets evaporate, reducing the heat of compression and reducing the compression work, which improves the efficiency of the compressor. In wet compression technology, detailed research is needed for the application to compressors because the droplet behavior affects the internal flow. The main parameters for wet compression technology are the droplet size and injection rate selection, and the flow inside the compressor changed by the droplet behavior was analyzed. When the droplet size and injection rate were changed at the design point and the off-design point, it was confirmed that a small droplet size was effective in both areas, and it was confirmed t... Keywords: comprehensive reservoir quality, gaussian mixture model, multi-stage fracturing, the coupling evaluation
In order to further improve the efficiency and economic benefits of multi-stage fracturing of unconventional oil and gas horizontal wells, it is urgently needed to conduct comprehensive reservoir quality evaluation research on the whole horizontal well section. Firstly, based on logging data, focusing on reservoir quality and completion quality, and comprehensively considering key factors such as reservoir physical property indexes and fracability indexes, a subjective and objective coupled evaluation model of the entropy weight method (EWM) and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) without bias is established to obtain the composite reservoir quality index. Then, unsupervised gaussian mixture model (GMM) clustering algorithms are used to classify the reservoir comprehensive quality index and finally four grades of fracturing stages are established. Taking shale oil well A and B of the Permian Lucaogou Formation in Jimsar Sag, Junggar Basin, as examples, the comprehensive reservoir qual... [more]

Keywords: Bayes optimization, cell culture, Gaussian processes, multi-objective, Pareto optimization, seed train
Development and optimization of biopharmaceutical production processes with cell cultures is cost- and time-consuming and often performed rather empirically. Efficient optimization of multiple objectives such as process time, viable cell density, number of operating steps & cultivation scales, required medium, amount of product as well as product quality depicts a promising approach. This contribution presents a workflow which couples uncertainty-based upstream simulation and Bayes optimization using Gaussian processes. Its application is demonstrated in a simulation case study for a relevant industrial task in process development, the design of a robust cell culture expansion process (seed train), meaning that despite uncertainties and variabilities concerning cell growth, low variations of viable cell density during the seed train are obtained. Compared to a non-optimized reference seed train, the optimized process showed much lower deviation rates regarding viable cell densities (&l... [more]

An integrated divertor simulation code, SONIC, has been developed in order to predict a self-consistent transport solution of the plasma, neutral and impurities in the scrape-off layer (SOL) and divertor. SONIC code has contributed to determining the divertor design and power handling scenarios for the Japanese (JA) fusion demonstration (DEMO) reactor. Radiative cooling scenario of Ar impurity seeding and the divertor performance have been demonstrated to evaluate the power exhaust scenarios with Psep = 230−290 MW. The simulation identified the decay length of the total parallel heat flux profile as being broader than the electron one, because of the ion convective transport from the outer divertor to the upstream SOL, produced by the plasma flow reversal. The flow reversal also reduced the impurity retention in the outer divertor, which may produce the partial detachment. Divertor operation margin of key power exhaust parameters to satisfy the peak qtarget ≤ 10 MWm−2 was determined in... [more]

Keywords: difference expansion (DE), reversible data hiding (RDH), slime mould algorithm (SMA)
Researchers have scrutinized data hiding schemes in recent years. Data hiding in standard images works well, but does not provide satisfactory results in distortion-sensitive medical, military, or forensic images. This is because placing data in an image can cause permanent distortion after data mining. Therefore, a reversible data hiding (RDH) technique is required. One of the well-known designs of RDH is the difference expansion (DE) method. In the DE-based RDH method, finding spaces that create less distortion in the marked image is a significant challenge, and has a high insertion capacity. Therefore, the smaller the difference between the selected pixels and the more correlation between two consecutive pixels, the less distortion can be achieved in the image after embedding the secret data. This paper proposes a multilayer RDH method using the multilevel thresholding technique to reduce the difference value in pixels and increase the visual quality and the embedding capacity. Opti... Keywords: diffusion, fracture-compaction mode, grouting design, permeation mode, reinforcement effect, sand
Grouting is an effective method to reduce permeability and improve the mechanical performance of sand layers, preventing a disastrous inrush of sand and water. A scientific grouting design scheme is the premise for satisfying grouting reinforcement requirements. Due to a lack of theoretical basis for current grouting designs, grouting projects are conducted empirically and blindly. This paper presents a quantitative design method for grouting in sand layers. Based on this method, a quantitative design is realized for judgment of the grouting mode, determination of grouting range and calculation of grouting reinforcement effect. Moreover, for the fracture−compaction grouting mode, a theoretical model is proposed to calculate the grouting process, considering the coupling effect of grout flow and sand layer deformation. Meanwhile, a calculation method for reinforcement is put forward, which can connect macroscopic performance of the grouted body and individual performance of grout veins,... [more]

Keywords: disturbance rejection, PID controller, pure integrating system, regulatory performance, set-point filter, time delay
The pure integrating process model with dead-time is inherently an unstable open-loop system. This paper presents a 2-DOF (2-degree of freedom) PID controller, based on the direct synthesis (DS) method, to improve the set-point tracking and load disturbance rejection performance for the pure integrating processes with time delays (PIPTD) models. The 2-DOF PID controller consists of a linear PID controller for rejecting the load disturbance in regulatory response and a set-point filter for relieving the overshoot in servo response. The DS method is based on comparing the desired closed-loop characteristic equation with the closed-loop characteristic equation, consisting of plant and PID controller. The adjustment parameter is only one desired time constant, with the roots of the desired characteristic equation placed at the same location, and the desired time constant was expressed as a function of the maximum magnitude of the sensitivity function (MS), for providing convenience in the... Petrochemical tail gases have various components and many separation methods, thus there are many possible design schemes, making it difficult to determine the optimal scheme. In this work, a graphic synthesis method was used to design a hybrid multi-input refinery gas separation process consisting of membranes, pressure swing adsorption (PSA), shallow condensation (SC), and distillation units for the production of valuable products which include H2, C2, LPG, and C5+. Ten refinery gases with different compositions were visualized and represented with vector couples in a triangular coordinate system. Firstly, according to the characteristics of the refinery gases, the feeds located in the same region of the triangular coordinate system were merged to simplify the number of input streams, then ten original input streams were combined into two mixed streams. Secondly, the optimal separation sequence was determined by using the unit selection rules of a graphic synthesis method. Thirdly, t... [more]

Keywords: cogeneration unit, combined heat and power (CHP) plant, constraint handling, techno-economic power dispatch
Co-generation units (i.e., combined heat and power plants—CHPs) are playing an important role in fulfilling the heat and power demand in the energy system. Due to the depletion of fossil fuels and rising carbon footprints in the environment, it is necessary to develop some alternatives as well as energy efficient operating strategies. By utilising the waste heat from thermal plants, cogeneration units help to decrease energy generation costs as well as reduce emitted pollutants. The combined heat and power economic dispatch (CHPED) operation strategy is becoming an important optimisation task in the energy efficient operation of a power system. The optimisation of CHPED is quite complex due to the dual dependence of heat and power in the cogeneration units. The valve point loading effect and prohibited operating zones of a thermal power unit make the objective function non-linear and non-convex. In this work, to address these issues more effectively, the viable operational area of the... [more]

In order to effectively prevent and control the rutting problem of asphalt pavement in the deep loess area of Eastern Gansu and reduce road diseases, diatomite was added into the asphalt mixture for laboratory tests. Through Marshall test and rutting test, the optimum mix proportion of the diatomite asphalt mixture, and the optimal mix amount of the diatomite in this area were determined. The pavement performance of activated diatomite asphalt pavement and SBS asphalt pavement in this area is compared and analyzed through laboratory tests and on-site road paving. The test results show that under the same ambient temperature, the activated diatomite asphalt pavement has the advantages of lower surface temperature, high stability, and low-water permeability coefficient than SBS modified asphalt pavement. In addition, by fitting the fatigue test data of these two asphalt pavements, it is found that the fatigue life of diatomite asphalt mixture is more sensitive to the change in stress lev... [more]

The existence of various native or nonnative species/fluids, along with having more than one phase in the subsurface and within the integrated production and injection systems, generates unique challenges as the pressure, temperature, composition and time (P-T-z and t) domains exhibit multi-scale characteristics. In such systems, fluid/component mixing, whether for natural reasons or man-made reasons, is one of the most complex aspects of the behavior of the system, as inherent compositions are partially or all due to these phenomena. Any time a gradient is introduced, these systems try to converge thermodynamically to an equilibrium state while being in the disequilibrium state at scale during the transitional process. These disequilibrium states create diffusive gradients, which, in the absence of flow, control the mixing processes leading to equilibrium at a certain time scale, which could also be a function of various time and length scales associated with the system. Therefore, it... [more]

Propylene Glycol Alginate Sodium Sulfate (PSS) is widely produced and used in medicine as a marine drug for treating hyperlipidemia. During the sulfonation synthesis of PSS, the sulfonation of chlorosulfonic acid is exothermic. At high temperatures, the process can easily produce a large amount of ammonium sulfate. Ammonium sulfate adheres to PSS in crystal and participates in the sulfonation reaction. In this study, the sulfonation process of commercial PSS was reproduced in the laboratory using chlorosulfonic acid and formamide. We used differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analyzer to examine the thermal stability of PSS, and we used both differential and integral conversional methods to determine the appropriate thermokinetic models for this substance. We also established an autocatalytic model to study the conversion limit time and the maximum rate time of this substance. After calculation, the activation energy of this substance is no more than 60 kJ/mol, and it... [more]
