April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: blowout, combustor, damkohler number, fuel distribution ratio, operating condition
Aiming at the problem of the narrow combustion stability boundary, a conical swirler was designed and constructed based on the concept of fuel distribution. The blowout performance was studied at specified low operating conditions by a combination of experimental testing and numerical simulations. Research results indicate that the technique of the fuel distribution can enhance the combustion stability and widen the boundary of flameout within the range of testing conditions. The increase of the fuel distribution ratio improves the combustion stability but leads to an increase in NOx emission simultaneously. The simulation results show the increase of the fuel distribution ratio causes contact ratio increase in the area of lower reference velocity and gas temperature increase. The increased contact ratio and temperature contribute to the blowout performance enhancement, which is identical to the analysis result of the Damkohler number. The reported work in this paper has potential appl... [more]
Comparison of Two Solar Probabilistic Forecasting Methodologies for Microgrids Energy Efficiency
Luis Mazorra-Aguiar, Philippe Lauret, Mathieu David, Albert Oliver, Gustavo Montero
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: CRPS, probabilistic solar forecasting, quantile regression models
In this paper, the performances of two approaches for solar probabilistic are evaluated using a set of metrics previously tested by the meteorology verification community. A particular focus is put on several scores and the decomposition of a specific probabilistic metric: the continuous rank probability score (CRPS) as they give extensive information to compare the forecasting performance of both methodologies. The two solar probabilistic forecasting methodologies are used to produce intra-day solar forecasts with time horizons ranging from 1 h to 6 h. The first methodology is based on two steps. In the first step, we generated a point forecast for each horizon and in a second step, we use quantile regression methods to estimate the prediction intervals. The second methodology directly estimates the prediction intervals of the forecasted clear sky index distribution using past data as inputs. With this second methodology we also propose to add solar geometric angles as inputs. Overall... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hydraulic fracturing, numerical simulation, physical parameter evolution
During hydraulic fracturing, expansion of internal micro-fractures deforms the rock to different extents. Numerical studies typically assume fixed parameters; however, in the field site, parameters are likely to vary. Error accumulation underlies deviation of simulation results from actual data. In this study, it was found that the mean velocity of an in-lab active source obtained from the hydraulic fracturing experiment decreased. To explain the effect of physical parameter (velocity) on numerical simulation results, we performed numerical simulations based on the extended finite element method (XFEM) of indoor hydraulic fracturing considering the velocity variation. The simulation results considering the change of the physical parameter (velocity) of the rock sample reflect the rock damage evolution more exactly. Consequently, the real-time evolution of physical parameters during hydraulic fracturing should be considered in numerical simulations. Rock damage evolution can be better c... [more]
Development of a Software Tool for Seismic Probabilistic Safety Assessment Quantification with a Sufficiently Large Number of Bins for Enhanced Accuracy

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: discretization, ground motion level, numerical method, probabilistic safety assessment, quantification, seismic risk
Quantification in seismic probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) includes the convolution of hazard and fragility curves. Because it is difficult to find the closed-form integration for the convolution of two curves, numerical methods are widely used in practice. In practical applications, the number of ground motion level bins in numerical methods is limited, and it is not clear whether the limited number of bins leads to conservative or optimistic results. In this study, the effect of the number of bins on the quantification results with simplified assumptions is investigated. It is found that the quantification results mostly decrease as the number of bins increases. To enhance accuracy in the quantification results of seismic PSA, a method and a software tool that enable a sufficiently large number of bins to be used for the quantification of seismic PSA models are developed. The application of the developed software tool to an example seismic PSA model demonstrates how the quantifi... [more]

Grzegorz Dec, Grzegorz Drałus, Damian Mazur, Bogdan Kwiatkowski
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: ANFIS, forecasting, fuzzy rules, mathematical models, solar PV system
This paper contains studies of daily energy production forecasting methods for photovoltaic solar panels (PV panel) by using mathematical methods and fuzzy logic models. Mathematical models are based on analytic equations that bind PV panel power with temperature and solar radiation. In models based on fuzzy logic, we use Adaptive-network-based Fuzzy Inference Systems (ANFIS) and the zero-order Takagi-Sugeno model (TS) with specially selected linear and non-linear membership functions. The use of mentioned membership functions causes that the TS system is equivalent to a polynomial and its properties can be compared to other analytical models of PV panels found in the literature. The developed models are based on data from a real system. The accuracy of developed prognostic models is compared, and a prototype software implementing the best-performing models is presented. The software is written for a generic programmable logic controller (PLC) compliant to the IEC 61131-3 standard.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: Elman neural network, grey wolf optimizer, inverse model, magnetorheological fluid damper, semi-active suspension
To improve the performance of vehicle suspension, this paper proposes a semi-active vehicle suspension with a magnetorheological fluid (MRF) damper. We designed an optimized fuzzy skyhook controller with grey wolf optimizer (GWO) algorithm base on a new neuro-inverse model of the MRF damper. Because the inverse model of the MRF damper is difficult to establish directly, the Elman neural network was applied. The novelty of this study is the application of the new inverse model for semi-active vibration control and optimization of the semi-active suspension control method. The calculation results showed that the new inverse model can accurately calculate the required control current. The fuzzy skyhook control method optimized by the grey wolf optimizer (GWO) algorithm was established based on the inverse model to control the suspension vibration. The simulation results showed that the optimized fuzzy skyhook control method can simultaneously reduce the amplitude of vertical acceleration,... [more]

JiHyun Hwang, Taewon Lee
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: airflow ratio, computer room, design and operation, energy saving, field application, outdoor air cooling
Due to the recent growth of the Internet and the rapid development of information and communications technology, the number of data centers and the amount of power consumed are expected to increase rapidly. However, these data centers consume large amounts of electric power throughout the year, regardless of working days or holidays; hence, measures to save energy at these facilities are urgently required. A numerical analysis was conducted in this study by changing various variables to examine the effects of various design and operating conditions on outdoor air-cooling systems and to derive some operating plans to minimize electric power consumption through the introduction of outside air into the computer room. When designing the system, it is desirable to select airflow considering various factors, such as the heat generated by the computer equipment, the efficiency of the fan, and the performance of the refrigerator, rather than the theoretical maximum outdoor airflow. As a result... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: CO2 production, crossroads, fuel consumption, greenhouse gas, urban transport
The manuscript discusses the investigation of vehicle flow in a predesignated junction by an appropriate traffic flow management with an effort to minimize fuel consumption, the production of CO2, an essential greenhouse gas (hereinafter referred to as GHG), and related transport costs. The particular research study was undertaken in a frequented junction in the city of Celje, located in the eastern part of Slovenia. The results obtained summarize data on consumed fuel and produced CO2 amounts depending on the type of vehicle, traffic flow mixture, traffic light signal plan, and actual vehicle velocity. These values were calculated separately for three different conditions of traffic flow management. Amounts of fuel consumed were experimentally investigated in real traffic situations, whereas CO2 production was calculated by applying the actual European standard entitled EN 16258:2012 associated with a guideline for measuring emission values, as well as by examining specific traffic fl... Krzysztof Górecki
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: averaged models, DC–DC converters, diode-transistor switch, electrothermal models, Modelling, power semiconductor de vices, SPICE
The problem of an influence of cooling conditions of power semiconductor devices on properties of selected DC−DC converters is considered. The new version of electrothermal average model of a diode-transistor switch for SPICE (Simulation Program with Integrated Circuit Emphasis) is used in the investigations. This model makes it possible to take into account thermal inertia of semiconductor devices as well as mutual thermal interactions between these devices. The investigations are performed for boost and buck converters containing the power MOS (Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor) transistor and the diode. Computational results obtained using the proposed model are shown and discussed. Particularly, an influence of thermal phenomena in the diode and the power MOS transistor on the converters output voltage and internal temperature of the semiconductor devices is considered. The correctness of the selected results of computations was verified experimentally.

Keywords: economic evaluation, financial provision, groundwater risk assessment, mine closure, risk mitigation, underground coal mine
Mining companies are responsible for the impacts that result from their mining activities even after the mining period has ended. At the same time, at the European and international levels, there is a lack of a detailed operational methodology comprising environmental risks during and after closure of underground coal mines. The environmental risk aspects that need to be considered when planning the closure of an underground coal mine and post closure in the broader environmental context are the following: modification of water flow scheme, surface instability, mine gas emission on the surface, and water and soil pollution. In this study, we focus on assessing groundwater risk in the context of an underground coal mine closure and evaluating the selected risk mitigation strategies in terms of performance and cost. The results from this study could be used for developing a final closure groundwater assessment plan by selecting the most feasible treatment alternatives for different envir... [more]

Keywords: electromagnetic radiation, energy consumption, intelligent energy management, microcontroller, power saving, standby power
In the context of the ongoing global warming, with environmental concerns regarding the greenhouse gas emissions due to our increasing energy consumption, smart energy management solutions have gained popularity as they have the potential to reduce our impact on the environment and also on our budgets. This paper proposes one of the most affordable designs for an autonomous, microcontroller-based demand-side energy management system to be installed in a home environment where it reduces the standby power consumed by the controlled devices. As a secondary function, it monitors and controls the lights to further save energy. The proposed system is designed to operate independently and also to limit the new wireless sources of electro-magnetic radiation introduced in the home environment. Six homes have been analyzed in terms of the measured energy consumption and to evaluate the energy management capabilities of the system, a prototype was built and tested. Promising results have been ob... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: FEM, laumontite-rich glutenite reservoir, oil production simulation, rock mechanical properties, stress-induced permeability evolution
PetroChina’s Xinjiang oilfield has a large quantity of tight oil reserves and hydraulic fracturing technology has been widely used to achieve commercial production. Some parts of this tight glutenite formation are laumontite-rich and the actual productivity of the hydraulically fractured wells is less than expected. To figure out the ways that laumontite affects tight glutenite well productivity, comprehensive experimental and numerical simulation studies have been conducted to investigate the rock mechanical properties, fluid flow behaviors and the major controlling factor of productivity. Laboratory results indicate that the tight glutenite formation with higher laumontite content has higher initial porosity, permeability but lower yield strength and more severe stress sensitivity in both permeability and fracture conductivity. For laumontite-rich glutenite rocks, there are commonly three types of rock deformation during the loading process: elastic compression, shear dilation and sh... [more]

Keywords: angle of inclination, photovoltaic, return on investment, structured tariffs
Fundamental mathematical principles were applied to calculate the return on investment (ROI) of a multiple inclination, rooftop-mounted, photovoltaic (PV) system that is connected to a structured tariff network. Recent history has seen a disproportionate increase in electricity tariffs within South Africa, enabling an increase in the deployment rates of PV technologies. Given the inherent uncertainty associated with simulating the electricity yield of a PV system, it can become difficult to estimate the ROI in advance. This study contributes to existing knowledge by presenting a process for calculating the ROI of a case study rooftop-mounted PV system using mathematical first principles where structured tariffs apply. The PV modules were mounted to a curved roof structure, ranging from 9° towards a southerly direction to 10° towards a northerly direction. The research results indicate that since the PV system is located within the southern hemisphere, the ROI will increase when PV modu... [more]

Keywords: battery control, induction generator, maximum power point, quasi-Z-source inverter, wind energy
This paper presents a wind energy conversion system (WECS) for grid-isolated areas. The system includes a squirrel-cage induction generator (SCIG) and a battery-assisted quasi-Z source inverter (qZSI). The batteries ensure reliable and stable operation of the WECS in spite of the wind power oscillations. The maximum power is captured from both the wind turbine (WT) and the SCIG through adjustment of the WT speed and the SCIG operating flux, respectively. The utilized maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms belong to the group of fuzzy logic (FL) search-based algorithms. The battery state of charge (SOC) is tracked online and controlled. When it reaches the minimum allowed level, the load is automatically disconnected; conversely, when it reaches the maximum allowed level, the battery charging is stopped via WT speed control. The load voltage root-mean-square (RMS) value and frequency are at all times controlled at grid-level values. The performance of the proposed system was exp... [more]

Keywords: data analysis, district heating, pulping energy efficiency, refining energy efficiency, thermo-mechanical pulping
A refining model is developed to analyses the refining process’s energy efficiency based on the refining variables. A simulation model is obtained for longer-term refining energy analysis by further developing the MATLAB Thermo-Mechanical Pulping Simulink toolbox. This model is utilized to predict two essential variables for refining energy efficiency calculation: refining motor-load and generated steam. The conventional variable for presenting refining energy efficiency is refining specific energy consumption (RSEC), which is the ratio of the refining motor load to throughput and does not consider the share of recovered energy from the refining produced steam. In this study, a new variable, corrected refining specific energy consumption (CRSEC), is introduced and practiced for better representation of the refining energy efficiency. In the calculation process of the CRSEC, recovered energy from the refining generated steam is considered useful energy. The developed model results in 16... [more]
Catalyzed Ethanol Chemical Looping Gasification Mechanism on the Perfect and Reduced Fe2O3 Surfaces
Laixing Luo, Xing Zheng, Jianye Wang, Wu Qin, Xianbin Xiao, Zongming Zheng
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Adsorption, Biomass, DFT, gasification, oxygen carrier
Biomass chemical looping gasification (CLG) is a novel gasification technology for hydrogen production, where the oxygen carrier (OC) transfers lattice oxygen to catalytically oxidize fuel into syngas. However, the OC is gradually reduced, showing different reaction activities in the CLG process. Fully understanding the CLG reaction mechanism of fuel molecules on perfect and reduced OC surfaces is necessary, for which the CLG of ethanol using Fe2O3 as the OC was introduced as the probe reaction to perform density functional theory calculations to reveal the decomposition mechanism of ethanol into the synthesis gas (including H2, CH4, ethylene, formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and CO) on perfect and reduced Fe2O3(001) surfaces. When Fe2O3(001) is reduced to FeO0.375(001), the calculated barrier energy decreases and then increases again, suggesting that the reduction state around FeO(001) favors the catalytic decomposition of ethanol to produce hydrogen, which proves that the degree of reduct... April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer, heat transfer, membrane vibration, numerical simulation, transformer oil
Membrane is the most important element of extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer sensors. Studying the relationship between working medium viscosity and membrane vibration characteristics are critical to the sensor design because the transformer oil viscosity will cause viscous loss during membrane vibration. The numerical investigation of membrane vibration characteristics in transformer oil is performed based on the finite element method. Besides, the effect of energy loss caused by viscosity is examined. It is firstly showed that the membrane has the highest sensitivity for the first-order vibration mode, and the transformer oil reduces the fundamental frequency by 60%. Subsequently, when viscosity and heat loss are considered, the amplitude is less than one-fifth of that without energy loss. The viscosity has a more significant effect on the velocity and temperature fields when the vibration frequency is close to the natural frequency. Finally, viscosity has a remarkable impact on th... Keywords: battery, DC/DC converter, energy management strategy, hybrid power system, optimal control, supercapacitor
This paper aims at presenting an energy management strategy (EMS) based upon optimal control theory for a battery−supercapacitor hybrid power system. The hybrid power system consists of a lithium-ion battery and a supercapacitor with associated bidirectional DC/DC converters. The proposed EMS aims at computing adaptive gains using the salp swarm algorithm and load following control technique to assign the power reference for both the supercapacitor and the battery while achieving optimal performance and stable voltage. The DC/DC converter model is derived utilizing the first-principles method and computes the required gains to achieve the desired power. The fact that the developed algorithm takes disturbances into account increases the power elements’ life expectancies and supplies the power system with the required power.
Design Flaws in United Kingdom Renewable Energy Support Scheme

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: feed-in tariffs and premiums, financial option theory, investor returns, renewable energy policy
Soon after the UK’s Feed-in Tariff (FiT) Scheme providing incentive prices for renewable energy was introduced in 2010, adjustments and modifications were made to eligibility criteria and incentive prices. Prices paid for renewable energy (RE) under the scheme were cut, deployment caps were introduced, and preliminary accreditation and efficiency standards were imposed. Controversy ensued as supporters sought help for the nascent RE technologies, while detractors claimed that the scheme was a wasteful means of reducing greenhouse gases. In this research, we examine how RE was incentivized under the FiT Scheme and its wider impact upon various stakeholders to assess its compatibility with liberalized electricity markets of the UK. We employ a financial performance metric to measure the direct costs of RE in compensation to investors and financial option theory to analyze the externalities of RE generation. As a means of reducing atmospheric CO2, the FiT Scheme was expensive, and the ext... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: building characteristics, indoor environmental quality, occupant’s satisfaction, post occupancy evaluation
Post-occupancy evaluations are common tools used to periodically assess Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) in tertiary buildings. Although the large amount of data collected from surveys contain valuable information, the influence of building characteristics on IEQ considering the different uses of the rooms and different types of occupants is rarely considered in the evaluation. This study presents an analysis of the association between building characteristics and IEQ in different building rooms (classrooms and offices) and different occupants (students and lecturers) using a post occupancy evaluation survey to 1013 occupants in 26 higher educational buildings in Spain under a Mediterranean climate. This research demonstrated that building characteristics influence IEQ perceptions of the different rooms in tertiary education buildings. The possibility of controlling the lighting, shadows or heating, ventilation air or conditioning (HVAC) systems are the most influential factors when... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: control modes on multi-terminal HVDC system, high-voltage direct current, multi-terminal HVDC systems, Newton method, power flow
The use of Direct Current (DC) transmission links in power systems is increasing continuously. Thus, it is important to develop new techniques to model the inclusion of these devices in network analysis, in order to allow studies of the operation and expansion planning of large-scale electric power systems. In this context, the main objective of this paper is to present a new methodology for a simultaneous AC-DC power flow for a multi-terminal High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) system with a generic representation of the DC network. The proposed methodology is based on a full Newton formulation for solving the AC-DC power flow problem. Equations representing the converters and steady-state control strategies are included in a power flow problem formulation, resulting in an expanded Jacobian matrix of the Newton method. Some results are presented based on HVDC test systems to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: exponentially weighted moving average, H∞ algorithm, lithium battery, state estimation, state of charge
When the classical H∞ algorithm (HIF) is applied to estimate the state of charge (SOC) of a lithium battery, the influence of historical data is usually ignored, resulting in an increase in the estimation error. In order to improve the accuracy of SOC estimation, this paper proposes an extended exponential weighted moving average H∞ algorithm (EE-HIF) in view of the influence of historical data. By designing the Gaussian function, the weighted distribution of the data at different times can effectively reduce the estimation error caused by the inaccuracy of the lithium battery model. In addition, when the system contains Gaussian white noise and alternating current input, the proposed method can achieve a faster convergence speed and better robustness. Simulation results show the advantages of the proposed algorithm, as compared to an HIF filtering algorithm and an exponentially weighted moving average H∞ algorithm (EWMA).

Rain is one of the dominant meteorological factors threatening the outdoor insulation performance of ultra-high voltage (UHV) power stations. Discharge occurring on the polluted surface of post insulators in rain has always been a major concern of power stations. Previous studies have shown that suspended water droplets on the shed edge play an important role in the rain flashover process.
