Characteristics and Significance of Acid-Soluble Organic Matter in Marine Carbonate Source Rocks
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: acid-soluble organic matter, carbonate rock, organic acid salt, source rock evaluation, TOC
Since the 1950s, major breakthroughs have been made in the field of carbonate oil and gas exploration, and large reservoirs have been found in carbonate strata in many countries; however, the validity of highly evolved carbonate source rocks has been controversial. Because of the loss of organic carbon during acid-solution processing in conventional total organic carbon (TOC) determination, we decided to use a new method of reducing acid-solution losses in order to more effectively quantify acid-soluble organic matter in carbonate rock samples. Different levels of acid-soluble organic matter were present in different types of samples, and there was no positive correlation between the content of acid-soluble organic matter and conventionally measured TOC values. However, the thermal evolutionary maturity of samples with high acid-soluble organic matter content is relatively low, and the high hydrocarbon generation conversion rate of acid-soluble organic matter and conventional TOC in ca... February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: East China Sea Basin, fractal analysis, HPMI, NMR with centrifugation, pore structure, tight sandstone reservoir
Various experiments, including routine petrophysical measurements, thin section and scanning electronic microscope (SEM), high-pressure mercury intrusion (HPMI), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), were performed to characterize the microscopic pore structure of tight sandstone in the Huagang Formation (E3h), Xihu Sag, East China Sea Basin, China. Specifically, NMR was used to investigate the dynamic variation of fractal dimensions during centrifugation, and the comparison of HPMI and NMR were used to clarify the difference of fractal dimensions. The results showed that there were four types of pores observed in thin section and SEM images: primary intergranular pores, intergranular dissolution pores, intragranular dissolution pores, and micropores within clay aggregates. The geometric shape and pore size of different pore types showed huge differences, indicating the formation of complex and diverse pore structures in the E3h formation. The flow capability of the reservoir was domin... [more]

Convenient Procedure for Measuring the Electrical Resistance of Fastening Systems in Urban Railway Tracks
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: electrical resistance, rail-fastening system, rail-to-earth resistance, stray current, urban railway track
Electrical resistance is among the characteristics that fastening systems must meet to ensure the proper functioning of signaling systems in railway infrastructure. The EN 13146-5:2012 standard specifies a laboratory testing method for determining the electrical resistance under wet conditions between running rails provided by a fastening system on steel or concrete sleepers. In urban railway tracks, the electrical resistance of fastening systems affects the stray current; however, there is no standardized electrical resistance measuring method. There is also no definition for the minimum value that the electrical resistance of fastening systems must satisfy to prevent stray currents. For this reason, this paper analysis the possibility of using the standard EN 13146-5:2012 for the measurement and analysis of the electrical resistance of fastening systems in urban railway tracks. In this study, the electrical resistance of different fastening systems used in urban railway tracks was me... [more]

Ultra Short-Term Power Load Forecasting Based on Similar Day Clustering and Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: cluster analysis, LSTNet, mode decomposition, non-stationary time series, ultra short-term load forecasting
With the increasing demand of the power industry for load forecasting, improving the accuracy of power load forecasting has become increasingly important. In this paper, we propose an ultra short-term power load forecasting method based on similar day clustering and EEMD (Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition). In detail, the K-means clustering algorithm was utilized to divide the historical data into different clusters. Through EEMD, the load data of each cluster were decomposed into several sub-sequences with different time scales. The LSTNet (Long- and Short-term Time-series Network) was adopted as the load forecasting model for these sub-sequences. The forecast results for different sub-sequences were combined as the expected result. The proposed method predicts the load in the next 4 h with an interval of 15 min. The experimental results show that the proposed method obtains higher prediction accuracy than other comparable forecasting models.

Influence of Armature Reaction on Electromagnetic Performance and Pole Shaping Effect in Consequent Pole Pm Machines
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: armature reaction, consequent pole permanent magnet machine, electromagnetic performance, finite element method, frozen permeability method
Consequent pole permanent magnet (CPPM) machines can improve the ratio of average torque to PM volume, but suffer from more serious armature reactions. In this paper, the variations of electromagnetic performance of surface-mounted PM (SPM), conventional CPPM machines, and pole-shaped CPPM machines with armature reaction at currents up to 5 times overload are analyzed and compared. The flux densities, flux linkages, back EMFs, inductances, torque characteristics, and demagnetization withstand capabilities are analyzed by the finite element method (FEM) and frozen permeability method. It is validated that the third order harmonics in inductances for CPPM machines tend to be reduced as current rises since the saturation in iron pole is prone to reducing the saliency effect. But the armature reaction tends to result in the increase of torque ripple components for all the machines. It is also found that the overall torque ripple of asymmetric pole-shaped machine tends to increase significa... [more]

The Fractured Permian Reservoir and Its Significance in the Gas Exploitation in the Sichuan Basin, China
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: deep gas exploitation, fractured reservoir, seismic reservoir description, Sichuan basin, strike-slip fault, tight matrix reservoir
Large gas reserves have been found in the Permian platform margin of the Kaijiang-Liangping area of the Sichuan Basin in SW China. They are assumed to be a widely developed reef−shoal reservoir. However, the tight matrix reservoir cannot support high gas production using conventional development technology at deep subsurface. In this contribution, we analyze the fractured reservoirs along the strike-slip fault zones using the compiled data of cores, well logging, and production data, and provide a seismic description. It was shown that the fractures and their dissolution developed along the strike-slip fault zones. The porosity and permeability of the fractured reservoir could increase by more than one and 1−2 orders of magnitude, respectively. The seismic anisotropic energy found in the steerable pyramid process suggests that fractured reservoirs have a strong heterogeneity, with a localized fault damage zone. This fracturing has both positive and negative effects, showing varied rese... [more]

Experimental Study of Frost Crystals Dendrite Growth on Two Neighboring Separate Frozen Water Drops on a Cryogenic Cold Surface under Natural Convection Conditions
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cryogenic cold surface, dendrite growth, frost crystal, initial frost layer thickness
The effects of cold surface temperature, wet air state (temperature and humidity) and original drop size on frost dendrites growth of two neighboring separate frozen water drops of same size under natural convection conditions were investigated by quantitative measurement. It was determined that for different cold plate surface temperature conditions, i.e., the ordinary-low temperature and the cryogenic temperature range, the frost formation mechanism is different. Under the conditions that the air temperature is not too high and absolute humidity is not too excessive, the influence of frozen water drop size on the longest dendrite of frost crystals becomes more and more obvious with the decrease in cold plate temperature. The changes in air temperature and relative humidity both change air absolute humidity, so they have similar effects on the growth of dendrites. However, the effect of wet air state on the growth of frost dendrites is not monotonous, which needs to be considered comp... [more]

Ammonia Production as Alternative Energy for the Baltic Sea Region
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ammonia, Baltic Sea Region, decarbonization, fuzzy options, green energy, investment evaluation, non-fossil fuel, real options theory
One of the consequences of the conflict in Ukraine relates to the growing shortfall in global ammonia production. There are additional negative global impacts on the availability of fertilizers and prices of ammonia (NH3). The shortage in ammonia production does not only influence the agroindustry but also the global shipping industry, as ammonia is positioned as a promising zero-carbon fuel and as a storage and transport medium for hydrogen. There are plans underway to start ammonia production in Estonia to minimize the consequences of the import stop of Russian ammonia in the context of the Ukrainian crisis. This study investigated the Baltic Sea Region (BSR) ammonia market and analyzed the economic implications of building an ammonia plant within the BSR. Using fuzzy real options models as the conceptual framework, together with secondary data analysis, case studies and expert interviews, the authors chart possible courses for the construction of ammonia production facilities within... Mobility-as-a-Service as a Catalyst for Urban Transport Integration in Conditions of Uncertainty
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: agglomerations, mobility-as-a-service, urban transport, urbanisation
Sudden events are being observed more often (pandemics, armed conflicts, high inflation, etc.). Urban transport systems are especially susceptible to sudden disruptions as manifested by sharp changes in user preferences and demand for transport services. Mobility as a service (MaaS) aims to improve the efficiency of urban transport systems and support the integration of various forms of transport. The main goal of the research is to assess the level of MaaS use and check what characteristics could influence using MaaS by different groups of users. A case study of the Tri-City, the largest urban centre in northern Poland, was used to examine the possibility of implementing MaaS. We assumed that the use of IT applications would help to reduce the challenges faced by mobility in modern cities. We hypothesised that MaaS is conducive to integrating transport in the city. Knowledge of MaaS acceptance is essential in implementing this concept and can help local authorities respond to sudden d... [more]

Static and Dynamic Analysis of Conductor Rail with Large Cross-Sectional Moment of Inertia in Rigid Catenary Systems
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: conductor rail, electrified railway, large moment of inertia, pantograph, rigid catenary
The rigid catenary system is widely used in tunnels to power electric trains via contact with a pantograph. Due to gravity, the contact wire normally has a sag that may affect the dynamic interaction performance with a pantograph. To reduce the contact wire sag, the most efficient measure is to improve the moment of inertia of the conductor rail, which is used to clamp the contact wire. Six new types of conductor rail with large moments of inertia are developed based on a conventional conductor rail. Then both the static and dynamic analyses are conducted to investigate the performance of the new types of conductor rail with a big moment of inertia. The conductor rail’s 3D solid finite element model is built using a finite element approach. The vertical deflection and the stress distribution are comparatively analyzed among different types of conductor rail. The analysis results indicate that the vertical deflection and maximum stress are significantly reduced when using the conductor... [more]

Strategies of Energy Suppliers and Consumer Awareness in Green Energy Optics
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: enterprise strategy, green energy, willingness to pay
This research aims to identify (1) whether consumers have an impact on the energy sector, (2) to what extent consumers have an impact on the energy sector, and (3) whether there is so-called energy communism. We understand this phenomenon as the process of energy suppliers imposing energy sources on which the end consumer has zero or very little influence. The research, therefore, focused on a B2C analysis, in five selected countries: the USA, Canada, Australia, the UK, and Poland (N = 500). The research subjects are a homogeneous group in terms of the sources of green energy, and the volume of production of this type of energy and its increments. The investigation was conducted using the procedure appropriate for the triangulation of research methods. Three hypotheses were verified. The first one was rejected, which aimed to determine whether individual consumers are guided by green energy in their choices. The second hypothesis—that energy suppliers do not take into account customer... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: C2-olefin, dodecane, plasma thermal cracking, solid carbon, turquoise H2
Turquoise hydrogen refers to hydrogen produced through a fossil-fuel-based process in which carbon is separated into solid carbon and no carbon dioxide is produced. In this study, dodecane was selected as a simulated oil for waste plastic pyrolysis recovery oil, and the turquoise hydrogen production characteristics through the thermal cracking reaction using an arc plasma torch were investigated. The plasma was stably discharged at 2 to 4 kW. Hydrogen in the produced gas was analyzed through an online IR gas analyzer, and hydrocarbons from C1 to C5 were analyzed through GC-FID. As a result of the experiment, the hydrogen yield tended to increase as the plasma power increased, and a maximum of 11.5% based on mass was obtained. On the other hand, carbon oxides such as CO and CO2 were not generated. Along with hydrogen, the valuable by-products of this process are solid carbon and gaseous hydrocarbons. The solid carbon yields also increased up to 66% as the plasma power increased. On the... [more]

The Effects of Rising Energy Prices on Inflation in Croatia
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: energy prices, inflation, input–output price model, sensitivity analysis
The estimation of the price change effects caused by the impact of external shocks on the national economy is extremely important. The aim of this paper is to estimate the effect of the increasing global energy prices on the stability of the Croatian economy. The effects of the increase in energy prices are compared with other exogenous shocks, i.e., with the effects of the increasing gross wages and salaries and the increasing prices of imported goods and services. The impact of the changes in the prices of primary inputs on the trends in the economic sector prices was quantified using the input−output price model. The intensity of the transmission of the change in price of a primary input to other sectors through intersectoral dependence was analyzed. The results of the analysis indicate that the Croatian economy is extremely sensitive to energy price shocks. Carbon Dioxide Storage Potential of Cenozoic Saline Aquifers in the South Yellow Sea Basin
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, geological storage, saline aquifer, sequestration, South Yellow Sea Basin, storage capacity
Carbon dioxide (CO2) storage in underwater reservoirs is a valuable method of reducing carbon emissions. Saline aquifers such as those in the South Yellow Sea Basin (SYSB), China, have great potential for geological CO2 storage. Thus, we use the recommended calculation method of USDOE and a formation volume model to determine the geological conditions for CO2 storage and estimate the CO2 storage capacity of the Cenozoic saline aquifers in the SYSB (depth: 800−3200 m). Overall, the SYSB exhibits weak fault activity and seismicity, medium and low geothermal fields, four types of source sandstone reservoir, and four sets of carbon reservoir−caprock assemblages developed from the Cenozoic strata, providing relatively good geological conditions for CO2 storage. The estimated capacity of the Cenozoic strata ranges from 39.59 Gt to 426.94 Gt (average: 155.25 Gt), indicating an extensive storage capacity that can meet the carbon sequestration needs of Shandong and Jiangsu Provinces for approxi... Subject: Process Control
Keywords: critical velocity, train blockage, tunnel fire, tunnel slope
Critical velocity is very important for smoke control in longitudinally ventilated subway tunnel fires. Numerical investigations are conducted in this paper to study the impacts of metro train blockages on critical velocity in sloping subway tunnel fires by using fire dynamics simulator (FDS) tunnel models validated with the field-experiment data. Moreover, a global model of critical velocity is presented for the blocked zone of a metro train in subway tunnel fires including influencing factors of the blockage ratio and tunnel slope. The results show that the reduction ratio of critical velocity in the blocked zone is less than the metro-train blockage ratio. The correction factor between the critical velocity reduction ratio and metro-train blockage ratio is 0.545. The aerodynamic shadow zone downstream of a subway train blockage has important impacts on the critical velocity. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Chinese provinces, energy indicators, sustainable energy development
Sustainable energy development (SED) has attracted the attention of the whole world. It has a wide range of concepts and rich connotations, which is difficult to be described with a single indicator. Therefore, scholars usually use multiple indicators to evaluate SED in multiple dimensions. Existing studies mostly took countries as the research objects, and there were fewer studies on sub-regions (provincial-level regions). In fact, due to factors such as resource endowment and industrial structure, there would be obvious differences in the energy system of different regions even within a country, such as China. This study took 30 provinces in China from 2010 to 2019 as the research object, and constructed a provincial-level SED evaluation system. Analytical methods of indicator contribution were also proposed to evaluate the improvement of specific indicators and their contribution to SED on both spatial and temporal scales. MILP-Based Profit Maximization of Electric Vehicle Charging Station Based on Solar and EV Arrival Forecasts
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: electric vehicles, energy storage system, forecasting, mixed integer linear programming, profit maximization, Solar Photovoltaic
Electric vehicles (EVs) will be dominating the modes of transport in the future. Current limitations discouraging the use of EVs are mainly due to the characteristics of the EV battery and lack of easy access to charging stations. Charging schedules of EVs are usually uncoordinated, whereas coordinated charging offers several advantages, including grid stability. For a solar photovoltaic (PV)-based charging station (CS), optimal utilization of solar power results in an increased revenue and efficient utilization of related equipment. The solar PV and the arrival of EVs for charging are both highly stochastic. This work considers the solar PV forecast and the probability of EV arrival to optimize the operation of an off-grid, solar PV-based commercial CS with a battery energy storage system (BESS) to realize maximum profit. BESS supports the sale of power when the solar PV generation is low and subsequently captures energy from the solar PV when the generation is high. Due to contrastin... [more]
