February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: experiment, linear quadratic regulator (LQR), model transformation, nonlinear systems, Pendubot, quasi-velocities, stabilization methods, underactuated systems
This paper considers the issue of linear-quadratic regulator (LQR) design for nonlinear systems with the use of smooth state and input transformations. The proposed design methodology is considered in the stabilisation task of the Pendubot, which is based on the concept of feedback equivalent control systems. It turns out that it is possible to find a controller that ensures comparable dynamics of the closed-loop system in the vicinity of the set point regardless of the state-space representation adopted. In addition, the synthesis of suboptimal controllers according to the LQR strategy ensuring equal dynamics at the equilibrium point is presented. The properties of the studied controllers were investigated in a simulation environment and using experimental tests. The detailed forms of transformations and linear approximations given can be regarded as ready-made procedures that can be applied to stabilise similar mechanical systems in robotics.
The Effect of Microencapsulated PCM Slurry Coolant on the Efficiency of a Shell and Tube Heat Exchanger

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: heat exchanger, heat transfer coefficient, microencapsulation, phase change materials, refrigerant
This paper describes the results of experimental studies on heat transfer in a shell and tube heat exchanger during the phase changes of the HFE 7000 refrigerant. The studies were performed using a mixture of water and a microencapsulated phase change material as a coolant. HFE 7000 refrigerant condenses on the external surface of the copper tube, while a mixture of water and phase change materials flows through the channels as coolant. Currently, there is a lack of research describing cooling using phase change materials in heat exchangers. There are a number of publications describing the heat exchange in heat exchangers during phase changes under air or water cooling. Therefore, the research hypothesis was adopted that the use of mixed water and microencapsulated material as a heat transfer fluid would increase the heat capacity and contribute to the enhancement of the heat exchange in the heat exchanger. This will enable an increase in the total heat transfer coefficient and the he... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, pH modelling, scrubber, wash water
In the current article, we will use a CFD approach for the scrubber wash water dilution simulation, by considering the current MEPC (Marine Environment Protection Committee, a subsidiary of IMO—International Maritime Organization) regulations that are in force. The necessity for scrubber wash water pH modelling and its importance in the current environmental framework is emphasized. The presented 3D model is considered as a 400 mm hydraulic diameter fluid domain with two outlets and a discharge water flow rate of 3050 m3/h for the considered pH value of 3, obtained within a state-of-the-art exhaust gas scrubber solution developed by a major EGCS (Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems) supplier. The CFD study was developed by considering a k-ε turbulence model. In order to achieve accurate results, a structured mesh with two levels of refinement volumes was realized. Based on the obtained data and the various parameters discussed, the paper presents a way to investigate the optimal results for f... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: adaptive control, buck converter, robustness, second-order sliding mode, sliding mode control, stability, zero-crossing detection
In this paper, a novel adaptive second-order sliding mode (2-SM) control approach, based on online zero-crossing detection, was proposed to solve the problems of the chattering and fixed control gain for buck converters with multi-disturbances. In modeling, the possible parameter perturbations and external disturbances of the converter system were contained. Instead of the traditional first-order sliding mode (1-SM), the twisting algorithm with 2-SM was adopted for the controller design, which could overcome the chattering problem and realize control continuity. Meanwhile, a novel adaptive mechanism was introduced to replace the conventional fixed control gain by time-varying control gain, the idea of which is to calculate the number of the zero-crossing points of the sliding surface online. As a result, the control magnitude of the improved controller could be reduced to a minimal admissible level, and the steady error of the output voltage could converge to the expected value. Furthe... [more]
A Margin Design Method Based on the SPAN in Electricity Futures Market Considering the Risk of Power Factor
Deqin Lin, Wenyang Deng, Siting Dai
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electricity futures, green power, margin requirement, power factor, VaR
On-grid integration of renewable energy, also called “green power”, is attracting more and more attention nowadays. Green power futures can be effective in increasing returns to suppliers and increasing market liquidity. However, compared to traditional futures, green power feed-in tariffs may be subject to integrity problems due to lower power factors; therefore, existing margin calculation methods for the futures market are no longer applicable. A SPAN-based margin calculation method that considers the power factor risk is proposed in this paper. The method provides the classification policies of the green power futures, based on the historical power factors of green power suppliers, and allows the margin amount to be adjusted as per the classification. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, empirical validation is presented by applying actual transaction data. Results prove that the proposed method can reduce the margin amount while covering the risk effectively.

Keywords: characteristic parameters, differential reservoir-forming model, main controlling factors, Niutitang Formation, organic matter pores, pore development characteristics, pore structure, Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation
Fine dissection of microscopic pore structure variations between the Niutitang Formation and the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation will help to improve the understanding of the underlying geological theory of shale gas in northern Guizhou Province. The stratigraphic, geochemical, physical, and tectonic properties of the two formations vary greatly, resulting in differential development of the microscopic pore structure among reservoirs and, as a result, major variances in gas concentration. To explore the mechanism of differential pore evolution, experimental techniques and instruments such as gas adsorption, liquid intrusion, SEM, XRD, and organic geochemical tests were utilized. The results indicate that the Wufeng-Longmaxi Formation is in a high-maturity stage, while the Niutitang Formation is in an over-mature stage. The latter has a higher TOC content. Both petrographic phases are siliceous shale petrographic phases, and the former has more developed dissolution pores with better pore vol... [more]

Ziheng Niu, Li Chai
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: bicycle-sharing, carbon emission, China, electric vehicle
Bicycle-sharing plays an important role in solving the “last mile” problem of Chinese people and promoting the construction of an environment-friendly society. This study assesses the carbon emissions generated in the life cycle of bicycle-sharing, examines the substitution effect of bicycle-sharing, and quantifies the depletion rate of bicycle-sharing in combination with the current rate of electric vehicles in China. The depletion rate of shared bicycles in China is high, roughly 5−15% per year. In addition, we discuss scenarios where the annual growth rate of electric vehicles is 40%, 50%, and 60%. Results show that when electric vehicles’ depletion rate is 5% and the annual growth rate of electric vehicles is 40%, the largest net emission reduction in 2025 is 1.96 million tons. Additionally, when electric vehicles’ depletion rate is 5% and the annual growth rate of electric vehicles is 60%, the smallest net emission reduction totals 1.7 million tons.

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrical preheating, oil recovery factor, SAGD, scaled physical experiment, steam conformance
The SAGD start-up process normally circulates steam in both the injector and producer, which consumes a large amount of steam, requires the high cost of high-temperature-produced liquid treatment, and unavoidably results in preferential communication in heterogeneous reservoirs. In order to achieve uniform preheat and full steam chamber development in SAGD wellpairs, downhole electrical heating to start up SAGD was proposed and investigated in this study using physical and numerical simulation approaches. Two 3-D scaled physical experiments were designed and implemented to investigate the feasibility and heating characteristics of such a method. Numerical simulation was conducted using an SAGD sector model with typical field properties to design the preheating process, optimize key operational parameters, and formulate the soak strategy to determine the SAGD conversion timing. The experimental results indicate that electrical heating outperforms steam circulation in achieving the unifo... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: dimethyl carbonate, direct conversion from CO2, heterogeneous catalysis, homogenous catalysis, urea alcoholysis
This review summarizes the performance of potential catalysts for the synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) using CO2 as a feedstock by two major processes—the direct route of carbonylation of alcohols and the indirect route of alcoholysis of urea. The reaction mechanisms and corresponding catalysts that were previously investigated are discussed. The major challenges associated with the conversion of CO2 to DMC are the low yields, low DMC selectivity, and thermodynamic limitations (alcohol carbonylation) of reversible reactions with low equilibrium constants. This occurs mainly due to the highly stable carbon dioxide molecules. The development of novel catalysts with high yields and high selectivity needs to be studied to overcome these technical challenges. In addition, to enhance the DMC yield, the use of dehydrating agents for water removal from the reaction mixture is recommended and discussed in detail in this article. This review critically examines the different catalysts used... [more]

Keywords: aerodynamics, Computational Fluid Dynamics, cross-flow fan, fluid machinery, internal flow, performance prediction, turbomachinery
Cross-flow fans (CFFs) have become increasingly popular in recent years. This is due to their use in several domains such as air conditioning and aircraft propulsion. They also show their utility in the ventilation system of hybrid electric cars. Their high efficiency and performance significantly rely on the design parameters. Up to now, there is no general approach that predicts the CFFs’ performance. This work describes a new methodology that helps deduce the performance of CFFs in turbomachinery, using both analytical modeling and experimental data. Two different loss models are detailed and compared to determine the performance−pressure curves of this type of fan. The efficiency evaluation is achieved by realizing a multidisciplinary study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, and an optimization algorithm combined to explore the internal flow field and obtain additional information about the eccentric vortex, to finally obtain the ultimate formulation of the Eck/Laing... February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Model Predictive Control, model-free control, model-free predictive control
Predictive control offers many advantages such as simple design and a systematic way to handle constraints. Model predictive control (MPC) belongs to predictive control, which uses a model of the system for predictions used in predictive control. A major drawback of MPC is the dependence of its performance on the model of the system. Any discrepancy between the system model and actual plant behavior will greatly affect the performance of the MPC. Recently, model-free approaches have been gaining attention because they are not dependent on the system model parameters. To obtain the advantages of both a model-free approach and predictive control, model-free predictive control (MFPC) is being explored and reported in the literature for different applications such as power electronics and electric drives. This paper presents an overview of model-free predictive control. A comprehensive review of the application of MFPC in power converters, electric drives, power systems, and microgrids is... [more]

Krzysztof Kędzia
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: control system, ecology, energy saving, hydraulic accumulator optimal parameters, multisource hydrostatic drive system, Optimization
What benefits, from the point of view of the energy and ecological performance of a multisource drive system, can be gained for a particular control criterion through the use of appropriate secondary energy source parameters (accumulator volume Vg and initial gas pressure pg) for a given work cycle of a machine working in closed spaces? This paper describes a method of determining energy and ecological efficiency for a selected multisource drive system control criterion and presents potential benefits resulting from a proper choice of secondary energy source parameters for a selected control criterion. Using, as an example, a multisource hydrostatic drive system with a combustion engine as the primary energy source, the energy consumption and the ecological parameters (nitrogen oxides NOx emissions, carbon monoxide CO emissions and opacity DYM) were analysed for selected work cycles and different hydraulic accumulator parameters, i.e., initial gas pressure (pg) and accumulator volume (... February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: active, apparent and non-active powers, dedicated data acquisition systems, Discrete Wavelet Transform, distorting, Fast Fourier Transform, power factor, powers theories, reactive
The paper presents several theories related to definitions of powers and power factors in non-sinusoidal and non-symmetrical regimes. The theories must meet some requirements: (a) to facilitate the measuring of power quantities by using acquired electrical waveforms; (b) to support the correct quantification of powers and power factors for a fair charge; (c) to support solutions for efficient compensation of non-sinusoidal and non-symmetrical regimes, simultaneous with the power factor compensation along the fundamental harmonic. Only theories meeting the above-mentioned requirements are approached. Aspects specific to power definitions are discussed and commented. Three theories rely on the Fourier decomposition of non-sinusoidal waveforms, valid only for steady signals, whilst the fourth relies on the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and can also be applied to unsteady signals. Dedicated original data acquisition systems were used to acquire experimental data for three case studies.... [more]
Analysis of Business Customers’ Energy Consumption Data Registered by Trading Companies in Poland

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: data quality, effective energy management, electricity consumption data, missing data imputation, time series
In this article, we analyze the energy consumption data of business customers registered by trading companies in Poland. We focus on estimating missing data in hourly series, as forecasts of this frequency are needed to determine the volume of electricity orders on the power exchange or the contract market. Our goal is to identify an appropriate method of imputation missing data for this type of data. Trading companies expect a specific solution, so we use a procedure that allows to choose the imputation method, which will consequently improve the accuracy of forecasting energy consumption. Using this procedure, a statistical analysis of the occurrence of missing values is performed. Then, three techniques for generating missing data are selected (missing data are generated in randomly selected series without missing values). The selected imputation methods are tested and the best method is chosen based on MAE and MAPE errors.

Xianbo Du, Jilai Yu
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: frequency regulation, Gaussian process regression, prediction model, singular spectrum analysis
The development of primary frequency regulation (FR) technology has prompted wind power to provide support for active power control systems, and it is critical to accurately assess and predict the wind power FR potential. Therefore, a prediction model for wind power virtual inertia and primary FR potential is proposed. Firstly, the primary FR control mode is divided and the mapping relationship of operating wind speed and FR potential is constructed. Secondly, a hybrid prediction method of singular spectrum analysis (SSA) and Gaussian process regression (GPR) is proposed for predicting the speed of wind. Finally, the wind speed sequence is adopted to calculate the FR potential with various regulation modes in future time. The results show the advantages of the proposed method in the prediction accuracy of wind power FR potential and the ability to characterize the uncertainty information of the prediction results. Accurate modeling and prediction of wind power FR potential can signific... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: consumer social responsibility, energy consumption, energy sustainability, energy-saving behaviour
Although European energy policy supports the reduction of energy consumption, the current economic and political situation in Poland and uncertainty related to the origin of energy sources do not support it. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to identify and assess the factors that affect the energy-saving behaviour of Polish consumers in the process of energy consumption. The research problem concerns the specificity of behaviours that are part of new trends in consumption, such as greening and the ethical dimension of consumption. The research question arises as to what the social responsibility of consumers is in the process of energy consumption. The research problem comes down to the question of factors that determine the behaviour of an individual consumer in the energy market. In order to realise the indicated purpose of the article, a conceptual research model was built and direct research was conducted using the research method, which was an online survey (CAWI). February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Energy, solar collector, solar energy, water heater
Among the renewable energy resources, solar thermal is one of the technologies that significantly contribute to energy supply and reduce global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Solar water heating (SWH) contributes a large proportion of the global solar thermal capacity, with 63% installation for domestic hot water (DHW) systems, 28% for large DHW systems, and the remaining 9% for other applications such as swimming pools heating, solar district heating, and space heating. Still, now, there are many challenges and limitations of those SWH technologies. The present work reviews the current challenges faced in the domestic SWH industry globally. The integration of thermal energy storage (TES) systems for better collector’s radiation absorption and overall performance are also highlighted. Many countries worldwide seem to face similar challenges within the SWH technologies and industry. It is proven that these challenges and limitations can hinder the global capacity of solar thermal utili... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: carbon emissions trading, carbon reduction, content validity, logarithmic mean Divisia index
Carbon emissions trading (CET) is now one of China’s key policy tools for achieving the goals of carbon peak and carbon neutrality. To comprehensively explore the consequences of China’s CET policy, the study first evaluated the content validity of CET policies across China’s 31 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities falling directly under the central government using policy strengths, tools, and measures from 2011 to 2020. The spatiotemporal drivers of regional carbon efficiency improvements from aspects of actual policy effect, average policy content validity effect, and policy quantity effect were also evaluated via the logarithmic mean Divisia index. This analysis revealed that the policy content validity was increasing in general and was higher in pilot regions. On average, the policy quantity effect was the primary driver of carbon efficiency improvements in both pilot and non-pilot regions, but the actual policy effect failed to promote carbon efficiency in both regio... Subject: Materials
Keywords: additive manufacturing, analytical, cylindrical geometry, encapsulation, latent thermal energy storage, phase change materials, radial conduction, reduced-order model, transient heat transfer, tube bank
Phase change material (PCM)-based thermal energy storage (TES) systems are widely used for repeated intermittent heating and cooling applications. However, such systems typically face some challenges due to the low thermal conductivity and expensive encapsulation process of PCMs. The present study overcomes these challenges by proposing a lightweight, low-cost, and low thermal resistance TES system that realizes a fluid-to-PCM additively manufactured metal-polymer composite heat exchanger (HX), based on our previously developed cross-media approach. A robust and simplified, analytical-based, 1D reduced-order model (ROM) was developed to compute the TES system performance, saving computational time compared to modeling the entire TES system using PCM-related transient CFD modeling. The TES model was reduced to a segment-level model comprising a single PCM-wire cylindrical domain based on the tube-bank geometry formed by the metal fin-wires. A detailed study on the geometric behavior of... [more]

Keywords: grass silage, methane fermentation, PEF, pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass
Lignocellulosic biomass is included in the group of renewable energy sources. Its calorific value is high, owing to which it can be successfully used in the production of second-generation fuels, e.g., biogas. However, its complex structure makes it necessary to apply a pretreatment in order to increase the biogas output. This study presents the usability of a pulsed electric field in grass silage pretreatment in methane fermentation and compares it with microwave-induced disintegration. The experiment shows that substrate disintegration with a pulsed electric field (PEF) results in an increase in methane output. The productivity of methane from PEF pretreatment silage increased by 20.1% compared to the untreated control. The application of microwave disintegration, with the assumption that the same energy is used for the pretreatment, resulted in a methane output increase of 6% compared to the control. The highest biogas production output in PEF-pretreated samples was 535.57 NL/kg VS,... [more]

This paper is concerned with designing a dynamical synchronization (via a robust cooperative control) of an electromechanical system network (EMSN), consisting of nonidentical brushed DC motors, where only the motors’ angular velocity measurements are available. The challenge of the proposed approach is that the actuation provided by the motor needs to handle external disturbances to achieve the velocity tracking task and handle the interaction between both motors cooperatively to share the load and the disturbance rejection. The control’s basis involves differential flatness and an active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) framework augmented using ideas from the graph theory analysis and multi-agent networks. Experimental results verify the theoretical developments and show the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy despite unexpectedly changing load disturbance and parameters uncertainties. The proposed algorithm is suitable for embedded use due to its simplicity. It can b... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: geometry-based models, multi-bounced scattering, time-varying correlation functions, tunnel wireless communications
In this study, a modified non-stationary geometry-based scattering model for tunnel vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) multiple-input multiple-output Ricean fading channels is presented. The proposed channel introduces non-line-of-sight three-dimensional multi-bounced scattering propagation paths under an assumption of equivalent scattering points to depict the tunnel environments, in which the scatterers are randomly distributed on the semi-cylindrical tunnel wall (i.e., cable racks, jetfans, road signs, lighting facilities). Furthermore, the time-varying channel statistics (i.e., the space and frequency correlation functions) resulting from the relative movement between the mobile transmitter and mobile receiver are analyzed. Finally, numerical results show that the space correlations of the proposed model significantly decrease when the multi-bounced scattering rays are taken into account; moreover, when the velocity and the antenna angle γR increase, the correlations decrease therewith, whic... Subject: Materials
Keywords: adsorbent materials, adsorption chiller, adsorption heat pumps, coatings, materials characterization, test rig
In the present work, the optimization of a new coating formulation was investigated, taking attention to an industrially focused research approach used for the engineering design of the adsorber. The adsorbent was a composite zeolite or silica-gel based coating applied by using new flexible polymer matrices. The FC-80 formulation represents a good compromise between mechanical stability and absorption capacity. Using the developed coating process, a new compact HEX design was developed to reach the AHP target performance with easy and fast manufacturing. The specific cooling power of the coated heat exchanger was estimated to be about 500 W/kg of adsorbent. The new coated HEX was integrated in a new adsorption chiller and has been tested by a laboratory test-rig under realistic operating conditions. Results of preliminary testing demonstrated that the prototype provides a cooling capacity of around 10 kW with a COP of 0.54.
