The sustainability of petroleum-based fuel supply has gained broad attention from the global community due to the increase of usage in various sectors, depletion of petroleum resources, and uncertain around crude oil market prices. Additionally, environmental problems have also arisen from the increasing emissions of harmful pollutants and greenhouse gases. Therefore, the use of clean energy sources including biodiesel is crucial. Biodiesel is mainly produced from unlimited natural resources through a transesterification process. It presents various advantages over petro-diesel; for instance, it is non-toxic, biodegradable, and contains less air pollutant per net energy produced with low sulphur and aromatic content, apart from being safe. A Framework for Green Remodeling Enabling Energy Efficiency and Healthy Living for the Elderly

This study proposes a framework for green remodeling for the elderly that emphasizes the role of designers and the notion of aging in place. Energy efficiency is critical for older persons because many of them spend more time at home and are less likely to heat and cool their homes appropriately. Improving the energy performance of the elderly’s housing by green remodeling could promote energy efficiency and healthy living for the elderly. Based on remodeling components derived from related work, key factors to be considered regarding the remodeling for the elderly were investigated. A framework for green remodeling enabling energy efficiency was developed for home upgrades for the elderly. Supply Chain Optimization of Flare-Gas-To-Butanol Processes in Alberta

In this work, the economic feasibility of combining a novel portable gas-to-methanol process with a novel methanol-to-butanol process is examined. The gas-to-methanol process converts waste flare gas into methanol using a series of truck-mounted devices deployed at oil production wellheads. The methanol-to-butanol process uses a new proprietary catalyst which produces butanol via a diketene intermediate at a large centralized facility. The goal of this work is to identify the best ways of commercializing this technology in Alberta. To do this, a supply chain optimization model is formulated which considers specifically how many gas-to-methanol trucks should be used and where specifically in Alberta they should be deployed, the specific suppliers of CO2 to use, where the location of the central methanol-to-butanol facility should be chosen, and the costs of transportation of materials between locations. Big Data may introduce new opportunities, and for this reason it has become a mantra among most industries. This paper focuses on examining how to develop cost and sustainable reporting by utilizing Big Data that covers economic values, production volumes, and emission information. We assume strongly that this use supports cleaner production, while at the same time offers more information for revenue and profitability development. This contribution describes a novel process systems engineering framework that couples advanced control with sustainability evaluation for the optimization of process operations to minimize environmental impacts associated with products, materials and energy. The implemented control strategy combines a biologically-inspired method with optimal control concepts for finding more sustainable operating trajectories. The sustainability assessment of process operating points is carried out by using the U.S. EPA’s Gauging Reaction Effectiveness for the ENvironmental Sustainability of Chemistries with a multi-Objective Process Evaluator (GREENSCOPE) tool that provides scores for the selected indicators in the economic, material efficiency, environmental and energy areas.
