Nitric Oxide Emission Reduction in Reheating Furnaces through Burner and Furnace Air-Staged Combustions
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coke oven gas, combustion modification, low-NOx burner, NOx emission, reheating furnace, staged combustion
In this study, a series of experiments were conducted on a testing facility and a real-scale furnace, for analyzing the nitric oxide (NO) emission reduction. The effects of the temperature, oxygen concentration, and amount of secondary combustion air were investigated in a single-burner combustion system. Additionally, the NO-reduction rate before and after combustion modifications in both the burner and furnace air-staged combustion were evaluated for a real-scale reheating furnace. The air-to-fuel equivalence ratio (λ) of individual combustion zones for the furnace was optimized for NO reduction without any incomplete combustion. The results indicated that the NO emission for controlling the λ of a single-zone decreased linearly with a decrease in the λ values in the individual firing tests (top-heat, bottom-heat, and bottom-soak zones). Moreover, the multi-zone control of the λ values for individual combustion zones was optimized at 1.13 (top-preheat), 1.0 (bottom-preheat), 1.0 (top... [more]

Effect of Daily Forecasting Frequency on Rolling-Horizon-Based EMS Reducing Electrical Demand Uncertainty in Microgrids
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: demand uncertainty, energy management system, forecasting error, microgrids, rolling horizon
Accurate forecasting is a crucial task for energy management systems (EMSs) used in microgrids. Despite forecasting models destined to EMSs having been largely investigated, the analysis of criteria for the practical execution of this task, in the framework of an energy management algorithm, has not been properly investigated yet. On such a basis, this paper aims at exploring the effect of daily forecasting frequency on the performance of rolling-horizon EMSs devised to reduce demand uncertainty in microgrids by adhering to a reference planned profile. Specifically, the performance of a sample EMS, where the forecasting task is committed to a nonlinear autoregressive network with exogenous inputs (NARX) artificial neural network (ANN), has been studied under different daily forecasting frequencies, revealing a representative trend relating the forecasting execution frequency in the EMS and the reduction of uncertainty in the electrical demand. On the basis of such a trend, it is possib... [more]

Pro-Environmental Behaviors of Generation Z in the Context of the Concept of Homo Socio-Oeconomicus
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: economic incentive policy, environment, Generation Z, household
The research reported here aims to investigate the pro-environmental behavior of respondents in the context of the concept of homo socio-oeconomicus. The main research question addressed in this paper considers the pro-environmental behavior of Generation Z representatives, due to the fact that this age group is believed to display different behavior patterns. In order to identify the differences in the pro-environmental behaviors of Generation Z, the results obtained from this group have been confronted with declarations of respondents from an older group (aged 25 to 65). It is worth noting that in the research on pro-environmental behavior of households in Poland conducted so far, Generation Z has not been taken into consideration as a separate demographic, so this study aims to make a contribution to the existing research gap. The data on the surveyed population were obtained through a standardized research questionnaire. The survey was carried out using the internet surveying techn... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: Bayesian optimization, deep-learning encoder-decoder framework, electric power load prediction, gated recurrent neural units, temporal attention
Short-term electrical load forecasting plays an important role in the safety, stability, and sustainability of the power production and scheduling process. An accurate prediction of power load can provide a reliable decision for power system management. To solve the limitation of the existing load forecasting methods in dealing with time-series data, causing the poor stability and non-ideal forecasting accuracy, this paper proposed an attention-based encoder-decoder network with Bayesian optimization to do the accurate short-term power load forecasting. Proposed model is based on an encoder-decoder architecture with a gated recurrent units (GRU) recurrent neural network with high robustness on time-series data modeling. The temporal attention layer focuses on the key features of input data that play a vital role in promoting the prediction accuracy for load forecasting. Finally, the Bayesian optimization method is used to confirm the model’s hyperparameters to achieve optimal predictio... [more]

Optimal Building Thermal Load Scheduling for Simultaneous Participation in Energy and Frequency Regulation Markets
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: demand response, demand-side management, frequency regulation, load scheduling, model-predictive control
This paper presents an optimal scheduling solution for building thermal loads that simultaneously participate in the wholesale energy and frequency regulation markets. The solution combines (1) a lower-level regulation capacity reset strategy that identifies the available regulation capacity for each hour, and (2) an upper-level zone temperature scheduling algorithm to find the optimal load trajectory with a minimum net electricity cost. In the supervisory scheduling strategy, piece-wise linear approximations of representative air-conditioning equipment behaviors, derived from an offline analysis of the capacity reset mechanism, are used to predict the cooling power and regulation capacity; and a mixed-integer convex program is formulated and solved to determine the optimal control actions. In order to evaluate the performance of the developed control solution, two baseline strategies are considered, one with a conventional night setup/back control and the other utilizing an optimizati... The Exergy Cost Theory Revisited
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: exergy cost theory, lineal productive models, thermoeconomics, waste costing assessment
This paper reviews the fundamentals of the Exergy Cost Theory, an energy cost accounting methodology to evaluate the physical costs of products of energy systems and their associated waste. Besides, a mathematical and computationally approach is presented, which will allow the practitioner to carry out studies on production systems regardless of their structural complexity. The exergy cost theory was proposed in 1986 by Valero et al. in their “General theory of exergy savings”. It has been recognized as a powerful tool in the analysis of energy systems and has been applied to the evaluation of energy saving alternatives, local optimisation, thermoeconomic diagnosis, or industrial symbiosis. The waste cost formation process is presented from a thermodynamic perspective rather than the economist’s approach. It is proposed to consider waste as external irreversibilities occurring in plant processes. A new concept, called irreversibility carrier, is introduced, which will allow the identif... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: air expansion, fluid power, hybrid systems, noise reduction, pneumatics, SPL measurement
In this paper, we demonstrate how to reduce the noise level of expanded air from pneumatic tools. Instead of a muffler, we propose the expanded collecting system, where the air expands through the pneumatic tube and expansion collector. We have elaborated a mathematical model which illustrates the dynamics of the air flow, as well as the acoustic pressure at the end of the tube. The computational results were compared with experimental data to check the air dynamics and sound pressure. Moreover, the study presents the methodology of noise measurement generated in a pneumatic screwdriver in a quiet back room and on a window-fitting stand in a production hall. In addition, we have performed noise measurements for the pneumatic screwdriver and the pneumatic screwdriver on an industrial scale. These measurements prove the noise reduction of the pneumatic tools when the expanded collecting system is used. When the expanded collecting system was applied to the screwdriver, the measured Sound... [more]

Self-Consumption and Self-Sufficiency in Photovoltaic Systems: Effect of Grid Limitation and Storage Installation
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: e-learning, Optimization, photovoltaic plants, Planning, self-consumption, self-sufficiency, storage
This paper presents a methodology to maximize the self-sufficiency or cost-effectiveness of grid-connected prosumers by optimizing the sizes of photovoltaic (PV) systems and electrochemical batteries. In the optimal sizing procedure, a limitation on the maximum injection in the grid can affect the energy flows, the economic effectiveness of the investments, and thus the sizing results. After the explanation of the procedure, a case study is presented, and a parametric analysis of the effect of possible injection limits is shown. The procedure is applied to size plants for an Italian domestic prosumer, whose electric load profile was measured for a year. A software program developed using the proposed methodology is also briefly presented. It is used for both research and educational purposes, both in laboratory classes and in remote lessons.

Analysis of the Practical Implementation of Flicker Measurement Coprocessor for AMI Meters
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: AMI meters with power quality indicators, fixed-point arithmetic, flicker measurements, FPGA, power quality, voltage fluctuations
Monitoring power quality (PQ) indicators is an important part of modern power grids’ maintenance. Among different PQ indicators, flicker severity coefficients Pst and Plt are measures of voltage fluctuations. In state-of-the-art PQ measuring devices, the flicker measurement channel is usually implemented as a dedicated processor subsystem. Implementation of the IEC 61000-4-15 compliant flicker measurement algorithm requires a significant amount of computational power. In typical PQ analysers, the flicker measurement is usually implemented as a part of the meter’s algorithm performed by the main processor. This paper considers the implementation of the flicker measurement as an FPGA module to offload the processor subsystem or operate as an IP core in FPGA-based system-on-chip units. The measurement algorithm is developed and validated as a Simulink diagram, which is then converted to a fixed-point representation. Parts of the diagram are applied for automatic VHDL code generation, and... [more]

A Heuristic Algorithm for Combined Heat and Power System Operation Management
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: co-generation, combined heat and power, energy management, energy storage system, Genetic Algorithm, heuristics, low-cost computing platform
This paper presents a computationally efficient novel heuristic approach for solving the combined heat and power economic dispatch (CHP-ED) problem in residential buildings considering component interconnections. The proposed solution is meant as a substitute for the cutting-edge approaches, such as model predictive control, where the problem is a mixed-integer nonlinear program (MINLP), known to be computationally-intensive, and therefore requiring specialized hardware and sophisticated solvers, not suited for residential use. The proposed heuristic algorithm targets simple embedded hardware with limited computation and memory and, taking as inputs the hourly thermal and electrical demand estimated from daily load profiles, computes a dispatch of the energy vectors including the CHP. The main idea of the heuristic is to have a procedure that initially decomposes the three energy vectors’ requests: electrical, thermal, and hot water. Then, the latter are later combined and dispatched c... [more]

April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: annual wind distribution, Optimization, switched reluctance generator (SRG)
This article presents a method to adjust the elements of a small wind power plant to the wind speed characterized by the highest annual level of energy. Tests were carried out on the basis of annual wind distributions at three locations. The standard range of wind speeds was reduced to that resulting from the annual wind speed distributions in these locations. The construction of the generators and the method of their excitation were adapted to the characteristics of the turbines. The results obtained for the designed power plants were compared with those obtained for a power plant with a commercial turbine adapted to a wind speed of 10 mps. The generator structure and control method were optimized using a genetic algorithm in the MATLAB program (Mathworks, Natick, MA, USA); magnetostatic calculations were carried out using the FEMM program; the simulations were conducted using a proprietary simulation program. April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: DC microgrid, distribution generation units, Fault Detection, higher order sliding mode observer, Lyapunov’s stability, multi sensor faults
Fault detection in a Direct Current (DC) microgrid with multiple interconnections of distributed generation units (DGUs) is an interesting topic of research. The occurrence of any sensor fault in the DC microgrid should be detected immediately by the fault detection network to achieve an overall stable performance of the system. This work focuses on sensor fault diagnosis of voltage and current sensors in interconnected DGUs of the microgrid. Two separate higher order sliding mode observers (HOSM) based on model dynamics are designed to estimate the voltage and current and generate the residuals for detecting the faulty sensors in DGUs. Multiplicative single and multiple sensor faults are considered in voltage and current sensors. By appropriate selection of threshold, single and multiple sensor fault detection strategies are formulated. A hierarchical controller is designed to ensure equal sharing of current among the DGUs of the DC microgrid and stabilize the system. Simulations are... [more]

Review of Multilevel Inverters for PV Energy System Applications
April 14, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: leakage current suppression, maximum power point tracking, modified MLC converter, MPPT, multilevel inverter (MLI), PV system
Over the last decade, energy demand from the power grid has increased significantly due to the increasing number of users and the emergence of high-power industries. This has led to a significant increase in global emissions with conventional energy generation. Therefore, the penetration of renewable energy resources into the power grid has increased significantly. Photovoltaic systems have become the most popular resources as their protentional is enormous, thus, the worldwide installed PV capacity has increased to more than 635 gigawatts (GW), covering approximately 2% of the global electricity demand. Power electronics are an essential part of photovoltaic generation; the drive for efficient power electronic converters is gaining more and more momentum. Presently, multilevel inverters (MLI) have become more attractive to researchers compared to two-level inverters due to their abilities to provide lower electromagnetic interference, higher efficiency, and larger DC link voltages. Energy scenarios represent a prominent tool to support energy system transitions towards sustainability. In order to better fulfil this role, two elements are widely missing in previous work on designing, analyzing, and using scenarios: First, a more systematic integration of social and socio-technical characteristics of energy systems in scenario design, and, second, a method to apply an accordingly enhanced set of indicators in scenario assessment. In this article, an integrative scenario assessment methodology is introduced that combines these two requirements. It consists of: (i) A model-based scenario analysis using techno-economic and ecological indicators; (ii) a non-model-based analysis using socio-technical indicators; (iii) an assessment of scenario performances with respect to pre-determined indicator targets; (iv) a normalization method to make the two types of results (model-based and non-model-based) comparable; (v) an approach to classify results to facilitate structured... Subject: Process Control
Keywords: artificial bee colony algorithm (ABC), multiobjective‐optimizations, proportional‐integral (P‐I) controller, voltage source converter, VSC‐based MT‐HVDC grids
The purpose of this study is to improve the P-I controllers of the voltage-source converters (VSC)-based multiterminal high voltage direct-current (MT-HVDC) networks. Since the VSCs are the non-linear elements of the MT-HVDC stations, the classical optimization methods, which approximately implement the linear model to optimize the P-I controllers of the VSCs, do not generate optimal results. Therefore, this paper presents a novel technique to optimize the VSC-based MT-HVDC grids’ P-I controllers by embedding the artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm. The voltage-droop control method is employed at on-shore grids to ensure the active and reactive power balance within MT-HVDC networks. During an evaluation, achieved via a detailed four-terminal MT-HVDC model designed in PSCAD/EMTDC, the improved results obtained under different dynamic situations such as unbalance wind power generation, change in load demand at the on-shore side grids, and eventual VSC disconnection, respectively.
