Keywords: acetic acid, amberlyst-15 catalyst, butyl acetate, economic evaluation, Energy Efficiency, esterification, membrane reactor, n-butanol, Reactive Distillation
Butyl acetate (BuAc) is widely used as a solvent in many applications, mainly in the food and pharmaceutical industries. The conventional process for BuAc production is both capital and energy intensive. The purification process involves the separation of BuAc from the azeotropic mixture of water and n-butanol, which is difficult to accomplish using a simple distillation unit. In this study, a membrane reactor (MR) for BuAc production via the esterification of n-butanol was investigated. The MR using the Amberlyst-15 catalyst was modeled and validated with previously reported experimental data, and a good agreement was achieved. The ultimate conversion of n-butanol using the MR was 92.0%, compared to 69.8% for the conventional reactor. This study is the first to propose an intensified MR-based process for butyl acetate production. The MR-based process was developed and rigorously simulated using Aspen Plus for an annual plant capacity of 92,500 metric tons of BuAc. The MR-based process... [more]

February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: descriptor form approach, guaranteed cost control, polynomial fuzzy systems
This paper presents a descriptor representation-based guaranteed cost design methodology for polynomial fuzzy systems. This methodology applies the descriptor representation for presenting the closed-loop system of the polynomial fuzzy model with a parallel distributed compensation (PDC) based fuzzy controller. By the utility of descriptor representation, the guaranteed cost control (GCC) design analysis can utilize polynomial fuzzy slack matrices for obtaining less conservative results. The proposed GCC design is presented as the sum-of-squares (SOS) conditions. The application of polynomial fuzzy slack matrices leads to the double fuzzy summation issue in the control design. Accordingly, the copositive relaxation works out the problem well and is adopted in the control design analysis. The GCC design minimizes the upper limit of a predesignated cost function. According to the performance function, two simulation examples are provided to demonstrate the validity of the proposed GCC de... [more]

Keywords: abdominal visceral adipose tissue, biomechanical behavior, constitutive modelling, finite element modelling, indentation tests, obesity, subcutaneous adipose tissue
The mechanical characterization of adipose tissues is important for various medical purposes, including plastic surgery and biomechanical applications, such as computational human body models for the simulation of surgical procedures or injury prediction, for example, in the evaluation of vehicle crashworthiness. In this context, the measurement of human subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) mechanical properties in relation to subject characteristics may be really relevant. The aim of this work was to properly characterize the mechanical response of adipose tissues in patients with obesity. Then, the data were exploited to develop a reliable finite element model of the adipose tissues characterized by a constitutive material model that accounted for nonlinear elasticity and time dependence. Mechanical tests have been performed on both SAT and VAT specimens, which have been harvested from patients with severe obesity during standard laparoscopic sleeve gas... [more]

Keywords: barren land soil, bioaugmentation, coastal soil, desert soil, fungus
is an edible mushroom growing in nutritionally poor and desert soil. There has been little information available about its edaphic and culturing conditions for achieving the vigorous mycelial growth essential for its artificial cultivation, bioaugmentation and biodegradation in unfertile soil. Thus, the present study was conducted to assess its edaphic conditions and find a suitable culturing medium for obtaining maximum growth. It grows commonly in coastal soil with saline conditions, barren land soil unfit for cultivation, and desert soil. It forms a basidiocarp singly around xerophytic trees and annual plants and also in soil without vegetation. In addition to a well-developed pileus and stipe, it has a typical rhizoid that grows horizontally in soil. The rhizoid was thick at the base of the stipe and became thin into the mycelial strand. In our earlier study, we reported that its mycelial growth was very poor on nutrient-rich media containing simple sugar, for example, glucose. In... [more]

Keywords: bioprocess development, data augmentation, digitalization, first principles modeling, hybrid modeling, Machine Learning, monoclonal antibodies
In recent years, monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are gaining a wide market share as the most impactful bioproducts. The development of mAbs requires extensive experimental campaigns which may last several years and cost billions of dollars. Following the paradigm of Industry 4.0 digitalization, data-driven methodologies are now used to accelerate the development of new biopharmaceutical products. For instance, predictive models can be built to forecast the productivity of the cell lines in the culture in such a way as to anticipate the identification of the cell lines to be progressed in the scale-up exercise. However, the number of experiments that can be performed decreases dramatically as the process scale increases, due to the resources required for each experimental run. This limits the availability of experimental data and, accordingly, the applicability of data-driven methodologies to support the process development. To address this issue in this work we propose the use of digital... [more]

Keywords: 2-tertiarybutylamino-2-ethoxyethanol, acid gas absorption, alkanolamine solution, gas mixture separation, selective H2S removal
Exploring new solvents for efficient acid gas removal is one of the most attractive topics in industrial gas purification. Herein, using 2-tertiarybutylamino-2-ethoxyethanol as an absorbent in a packed column at atmospheric pressure was examined for selective absorption of H2S from mixed gas streams. In the present work, the acid gas load, H2S absorption selectivity, acid gas removal ratio, amine solution regeneration performance, and corrosion performance were investigated through evaluating experiments absorbing H2S and CO2 by using methyldiethanolamine and 2-tertiarybutylamino-2-ethoxyethanol. The experimental results illustrate that the H2S absorption selective factors were 3.88 and 15.81 by using 40% methyldiethanolamine and 40% 2-tertiarybutylamino-2-ethoxyethanol at 40 °C, respectively, showing that 2-tertiarybutylamino-2-ethoxyethanol is an efficient solvent for selective H2S removal, even better than methyldiethanolamine. Based on the consideration of cost, we added 5% TBEE to... [more]

Keywords: carbon fiber, carbon-reinforced concrete, end-of-life, LCA, recycling, reinforced concrete
Carbon-reinforced concrete (CRC) has the potential to play a pivotal role in optimizing the built environment and has therefore been experiencing a wave of research and development in the construction industry in recent years. The production of carbon fibers for CRC is energy-intensive, prompting the need to explore circular economy approaches (e.g., recycling at the End-of-Life (EoL)) to optimize the environmental performance of this material. Underdeveloped processes and a resulting lack of primary data regarding the recycling of CRC have hampered a comprehensive sustainability assessment of the novel composite building material. The novelty of this article is the detailed presentation of possible EoL scenarios for CRC and the detailed determination of the respective environmental impacts. This study aims to model EoL options within a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), focusing on the EoL stage based on ISO 14040/44 using the GaBi ts 10.5.1.124 software and the CML2001 (2016) methodology.... Keywords: bioethanol, control, extractive distillation column, salt
Extractive distillation with salts, unlike other dehydration technologies, is better due to the null toxicity that exists in the distillate, since salt cannot be evaporated. With this distillation technology, it is possible to obtain a high concentration of ethanol, however, there are still problems in the control of the distillation columns in the presence of disturbances. The present work deals with the simulation and control of an extractive distillation column using CaCl2 as a separating agent, for which the Aspen Dynamics® simulator is used. The measurement and control of the ethanol composition are carried out by means of temperature, in addition, four control structures are evaluated and compared. These structures are L, D, LV, and DV, which are the most common in conventional distillation, and their performance is measured by means of deterministic indicators applying changes (disturbances) of composition and the flow rate in the main feed of the column. The most relevant resul... [more]

Keywords: calculation and analysis, five-point smoothing algorithm, propulsion shafting, torsional vibration
In this paper, a method is proposed to accurately measure the torsional vibration of a ship’s propulsion shafting, and calculate its instantaneous torque based on instantaneous speed data. The instantaneous speed signal of a ship is measured by a data acquisition instrument indirectly under the deceleration condition, and then filtered by the five-point smoothing algorithm. The filtered instantaneous speed signal is further processed to calculate the maximum amplitude of the torsional vibration, along with the maximum torque of the propulsion shafting under specific operating conditions. The proposed method can effectively improve the calculation accuracy of the torsional vibration of the shafting, and provides reliable theoretical basis for setting the safe speed of the ship’s diesel engine.

Keywords: laws of heat and mass transfer, microbial spray-drying, porous media mathematical prediction model, real-time sampling
The process of microbial spray-drying has inherent defects such as short time, complexity, and non-visualization of particle trajectory. However, there has been a lack of effective methods for real-time sampling, rehydration, and non-destructive storage of dried particles, as well as mathematical modeling of the drying process of yeast particles based on sampling and measurement data. Therefore, firstly, a real-time sampling system was developed which completed real-time sampling, rehydration, and non-destructive storage of spray-dried particles, and realized the real reproduction of the changes of yeast particles in the process of spray drying. The laws that the motion trajectory of microbial particles during spray drying are divided into the first cycle region and the reflux cycle region were concluded, and the partition mechanism was explored. Then, based on the sampling data and the law of heat and mass transfer, a mathematical model of porous media was established to predict the v... [more]

is a prominent emerging pathogen responsible for a variety of hospital-acquired infections. It can contaminate inanimate surfaces and survive in harsh environmental conditions for prolonged periods of time in the form of biofilm. Biofilm is difficult to remove with only one method of disinfection, so combined disinfection methods and biocidal active substances are needed for biofilm eradication. Additionally, having in mind ecological demands, legislators are more prone using fewer toxic substances for disinfection that produce less solid waste and hazardous disinfection byproducts. Gaseous ozone and citric acid are natural biocidal compounds, and the purpose of this study was to determine their combined biocidal effects on A. baumannii biofilm formed on ceramics and polystyrene. Twenty-four-hour A. baumannii biofilm formed on ceramic tiles and polystyrene was exposed to different combinations of disinfection protocols with 25 ppm of gaseous ozone for 1 h exposure time and 15% citric a... Keywords: fractured zone, gob-side entry-retaining technology, high gassy mine, high-pumping roadway, pillar-free mining, surrounding rock control
High gassy mines have low recovery rates of coal resources in the stoping of high-seam coal resources in addition to difficulties in the gas control of the working face and gas accumulation in the goaf and upper corner. Pillar-free gob-side entry-retaining technology was combined with the high-pumping roadway for gas control in the goaf based on the W1319 working face in the Gaohe Coal Mine. Theoretical analysis and numerical simulation were used to derive the width of the reserved coal pillar in the high-gas pillar-free working face and the horizon of the high-pumping roadway. The location of the high-pumping roadway was determined in combination with the on-site investigation. Numerical simulations were used to compare the plastic failures and deformations of surrounding rocks in the cases of non-roof-cutting, roof cutting, and reinforced roof cutting. It could solve large and uncontrolled surrounding rock deformations of the gob-side entry-retaining technology and return airway in t... [more]
A Multiobjective Variable Neighborhood Search with Learning and Swarm for Permutation Flowshop Scheduling with Sequence-Dependent Setup Times
Kun Li, Huixin Tian
February 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: multiobjective optimization, permutation flowshop scheduling, variable neighborhood search
In recent years, the permutation flowshop scheduling problem (PFSP) with sequence-dependent setup times has been widely investigated in the literature, most focusing on the single-objective optimization problem. However, in a practical production environment, schedulers usually need to handle several conflicting objectives simultaneously, which makes the multiobjective PFSP with sequence-dependent setup times (MOPFSP-SDST) more difficult and time consuming to be solved. Therefore, this paper proposes a learning and swarm based multiobjective variable neighborhood search (LS-MOVNS) for this problem to minimize makespan and total flowtime. The main characteristic of the proposed LS-MOVNS is that it can achieve the balance between exploration and exploitation by integrating swarm-based search with VNS in the multiobjective environment through machine learning technique. For example, the learning-based selection of solutions for multiobjective local search and the adaptive determination of... [more]

In the last decades, the increasing complexity of industrial information technology has led to the emergence of new trends in manufacturing. Factories are using multiple Internet of Things (IoT) platforms to harvest sensor information to improve production. Such a transformation contributes to efficiency growth and reduced production costs. To deal with the heterogeneity of the services within an IoT system, Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is referred to in the literature as being advantageous for the design and development of software to support IoT-based production processes. The aim of SOA-based design is to provide the leverage to use and reuse loosely coupled IoT services at the middleware layer to minimise system integration problems. We propose a system architecture that follows the SOA architectural pattern and enables developers and business process designers to dynamically add, query or use instances of existing modular software in the IoT context. When a liquid flows, it has an internal resistance to flow. Viscosity is the property that measures this resistance, which is a fundamental characteristic parameter of liquids. The monitoring of viscosity is essential for quality control in many industrial areas, such as the pharmaceutical, chemical, and energy-related industries. Several instruments measure the viscosity of a liquid, the most used being the capillary viscometers. These instruments are complex, associated with high cost and expensive prices. This represents a challenge in several industries, where accurate viscosity knowledge is essential in designing various industrial equipment and processes. Using image processing and machine learning algorithms is a promising alternative to the current measurement methods. This work aims to extract characteristic information from videos of droplets of different samples using image processing algorithms. Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, digital twin, food processing, Industry 4.0, Machine Learning, self-aware computing systems
The production of food is highly complex due to the various chemo-physical and biological processes that must be controlled for transforming ingredients into final products. Further, production processes must be adapted to the variability of the ingredients, e.g., due to seasonal fluctuations of raw material quality. Digital twins are known from Industry 4.0 as a method to model, simulate, and optimize processes. In this vision paper, we describe the concept of a digital food twin. Due to the variability of the raw materials, such a digital twin has to take into account not only the processing steps but also the chemical, physical, or microbiological properties that change the food independently from the processing. We propose a hybrid modeling approach, which integrates the traditional approach of food process modeling and simulation of the bio-chemical and physical properties with a data-driven approach based on the application of machine learning. Keywords: 3D cell culture, cell aggregate, human mesenchymal stem cells, KP24 peptide-immobilized substrate, L929 fibroblast cell, Lys and Pro periodic peptide (KP24)
Cell aggregates have been applied in various fields such as regenerative medicine and drug toxicity testing. We have shown that H-(Lys-Pro)12-OH (KP24), a repeating sequence of lysine (Lys) and proline (Pro), induces uniformly sized cell aggregates simply by its presence in cell suspension. In this study, we considered that this peptide could be applied to a three-dimensional culture substrate that can induce uniform cell aggregates by immobilizing it on the substrate. Therefore, mouse fibroblasts (L929) were seeded on KP24-immobilized glass substrates and cell behavior was observed. We also seeded human-derived cells, namely, human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC), on KP24-immobilized substrates and characterized their cell assemblies. Furthermore, KP24 was chemically immobilized on the substrate surface, which allowed us to trace the mechanism of KP24−cell interaction. As a mechanism analysis of the cell aggregation ability of KP24, we investigated whether KP24 interacts with the cell s... [more]

Keywords: coupling, drift-flux model, dynamic flow phenomena, reservoir model, two-phase flow, wellbore model
A coupled reservoir/wellbore simulator is essential for solving relevant flow phenomena with dynamic interactions between reservoir and wellbore in two-phase flow systems. A reservoir simulator or wellbore simulator alone fails to solve these transient flow phenomena. This paper summarises a critical review of the coupled reservoir and wellbore simulation. First, a wide application of the drift-flux (DF) models to simulate gas−liquid flow in a wellbore model coupling to a reservoir model was discussed. Then, the mechanisms of the coupled reservoir/wellbore simulator in two-phase flow systems were discussed, including the reservoir modeling, wellbore modeling, and their coupling schemes. Various examples of representative coupled simulators were presented. Finally, some case studies were reported to reveal dynamic interactions between wellbore and reservoir by using the coupled reservoir/wellbore simulators. This study gives the most up-to-date and systematic sights on the relevant rese... [more]
