Vehicle-To-Grid for Peak Shaving to Unlock the Integration of Distributed Heat Pumps in a Swedish Neighborhood
Monica Arnaudo, Monika Topel, Björn Laumert
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: heat pumps, integrated energy systems, vehicle-to-grid
The city of Stockholm is close to hitting the capacity limits of its power grid. As an additional challenge, electricity has been identified as a key resource to help the city to meet its environmental targets. This has pushed citizens to prefer power-based technologies, like heat pumps and electric vehicles, thus endangering the stability of the grid. The focus of this paper is on the district of Hammarby Sjöstad. Here, plans are set to switch from district heating to heat pumps. A previous study verified that this choice will cause overloadings on the electricity distribution grid. The present paper tackles this problem by proposing a new energy storage option. By considering the increasing share of electric vehicles, the potential of using the electricity stored in their batteries to support the grid is explored through technical performance simulations. The objective was to enable a bi-directional flow and use the electric vehicles’ (EVs)’ discharging to shave the peak demand cause... [more]

Ana Almeida, Rosa Pilão, Albina Ribeiro, Elisa Ramalho, Carlos Pinho
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: animal fat, co-gasification, crude glycerol, fixed-bed, Steam Reforming
The aim of this work was to assess the technical viability of glycerol/fat co-gasification. The gasification performance was studied in a downflow fixed bed reactor using activated alumina particles as bed material and steam as oxidizing agent. The effect of gasification temperature, from 800 to 950 °C was studied with a feed mixture with 10% (w/w) of animal fat. The influence of fat incorporation on the feedstock in the overall gasification process was also performed, using 3% (w/w) and 5% (w/w) of fat in feed mixtures. Samples of dry gas from the gasifier were collected and analyzed by gas chromatography in order to determine the CO, CO2, CH4, and H2 content. The best results were obtained using the highest tested temperature, 950 °C, and using 3% (w/w) of animal fat in the feed mixture. The overall results revealed that the co-gasification of glycerol/animal fat mixtures seems to be a feasible technical option.

Keywords: battery storage systems (BSSs), feasibility, intermittent wind power, MINLP, real-time dynamic active-reactive optimal power flow (RT-DAR-OPF)
In this paper, a multi-phase multi-time-scale real-time dynamic active-reactive optimal power flow (RT-DAR-OPF) framework is developed to optimally deal with spontaneous changes in wind power in distribution networks (DNs) with battery storage systems (BSSs). The most challenging issue hereby is that a large-scale ‘dynamic’ (i.e., with differential/difference equations rather than only algebraic equations) mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem has to be solved in real time. Moreover, considering the active-reactive power capabilities of BSSs with flexible operation strategies, as well as minimizing the expended life costs of BSSs further increases the complexity of the problem. To solve this problem, in the first phase, we implement simultaneous optimization of a huge number of mixed-integer decision variables to compute optimal operations of BSSs on a day-to-day basis. In the second phase, based on the forecasted wind power values for short prediction horizons, wind powe... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: base fluid, convergent/divergent channels, heat transfer, hybrid nanofluids, numerical solution, Nusselt number
In the present study, our aim is to present a novel model for the flow of hybrid nanofluids in oblique channels. Copper and aluminum oxide have been used to obtain a novel hybrid nanofluid. The equations that govern the flow of hybrid nanofluids have been transformed to a set of nonlinear equations with the implementation of self-similar variables. The resulting system is treated numerically by using coupled shooting and Runge−Kutta (R-K) scheme. The behavior of velocity and temperature is examined by altering the flow parameters. The cases for narrowing (convergent) and opening (divergent) channels are discussed, and the influence of various parameters on Nusselt number is also presented. To indicate the reliability of the study, a comparison is made that confirms the accuracy of the study presented.

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: methane adsorption capacity, nanopore structure, shale gas, type III kerogen
This study focuses on the nanostructure of shale samples with type III kerogen and its effect on methane adsorption capacity. The composition, pore size distribution, and methane adsorption capacities of 12 shale samples were analyzed by using the high-pressure mercury injection experiment, low-temperature N2/CO2 adsorption experiments, and the isothermal methane adsorption experiment. The results show that the total organic carbon (TOC) content of the 12 shale samples ranges from 0.70% to ~35.84%. In shales with type III kerogen, clay minerals and organic matter tend to be deposited simultaneously. When the TOC content is higher than 10%, the clay minerals in these shale samples contribute more than 70% of the total inorganic matter. The CO2 adsorption experimental results show that micropores in shales with type III kerogen are mainly formed in organic matter. However, mesopores and macropores are significantly affected by the contents of clay minerals and quartz. The methane isother... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: advanced breaking, elastic foundation beam, filing rate, large mining height, shallow coal seam, time and space relationship
The large mining height (LMH) in shallow coal seam has been widely applied in the Shenfu coalfield, China. The dynamic load is obvious, and the rib spalling is serious when the LMH working face concerns roof weighting. The advanced breaking position of the roof affects the strength of the ground pressure when the roof is broken. Firstly, based on a large number of actual measurements and physical simulation experiments, the rock formation in the fall zone, where the articulated structure cannot be articulated between the coal seam and the main roof, is called the equivalent immediate roof (EIR). When the mining height increases, the thickness of the EIR increases non-linearly. Next, based on the theory of “elastic foundation beam”, a mechanical model for the advanced breaking of the roof is established in shallow coal seam, and the calculation equation for the advanced breaking position of the roof is given; then, designed and carry out boreholes of the no. 22201 working face in the Zh... March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: boundary condition, cooling capacity, cooling radiant ceiling panel, heat transfer model
The objective of this study is to establish boundary conditions to evaluate the cooling capacity of the Cooling Radiant Ceiling Panel (CRCP) considering the environment of a room equipped with the CRCP. The current study investigated the boundary conditions and derivation techniques from previous studies. Based on the results of the analysis, a heat transfer model was derived for a room fitted with CRCP. In addition, the heat transfer model was used to derive the factors affecting the cooling capacity of the CRCP and each factor was simulated and verified through this model. The effects of these factors on the capacity of the CRCP was established by using various boundary conditions. To verify the validity of the simulation model, the experimental results were compared with the cooling capacity for a specific case. As a result, it was established that even for the same panel, there was a variance in the cooling capacity of the CRCP based on the boundary conditions and that the influenc... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: early intake valve closing, electro hydraulic valve train, energy balance, heat losses, Miller cycles
This study provides an experimental evaluation of the effectiveness of Miller cycles with various combinations of lift and intake valve closing angle for a passenger car engine with premixed combustion in naturally aspirated operation. A fully variable electro-hydraulic valve train provided different valve lift profiles. Six load points, from 1.5 up to 5 bar brake mean effective pressure at a constant engine speed of 2000 min−1, were tested with 6 different intake valve lift/intake valve closing angle combinations. The intake valve closing angle was always set before bottom dead center to achieve the desired load with unthrottled operations. Experimental comparison with throttled operation outlines an indicated efficiency increase of up to 10% using high intake lift with early valve closing angle. Furthermore, this analysis outlines the influences that early intake valve closing angle has on fuel energy disposition. Longer combustion duration occurs using early intake valve closing ang... Keywords: buck-boost, converter topologies, PV microinverters, single-stage, tapped inductor
This paper introduces a family of single-stage buck-boost DC/AC inverters for photovoltaic (PV) applications. The high-gain feature was attained by applying a multi-winding tapped inductor, and thus, the proposed topologies can generate a grid-level AC output voltage without using additional high step-up stages. The proposed topologies had a low component count and consisted of a single magnetic device and three or four power switches. Moreover, the switches were assembled in a push-pull or half/full-bridge arrangement, which allowed using commercial low-cost driver-integrated circuits. In this paper, the operation principle and comparison of the proposed topologies are presented. The feasibility of the proposed topologies was verified by simulations and experimental tests.
Aerodynamic Investigation of Datum and Slotted Blade Profiles under Different Mach Number Conditions
Yumeng Tang, Yangwei Liu
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aero-engine compressor, blade loading, blading with slot, mach number, profile loss
Mach number effects on loss and loading are evaluated in both the datum and slotted compressor profiles under a wide range of incidences based on two-dimensional (2D) computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations. First, total pressure loss and loading abilities are compared. Then, three kinds of deficit thickness are defined and evaluated, and a correlation is made between the loading and the momentum deficit thickness at the profile trailing edge. Finally, the nondimensionalized destruction of mean mechanical energy and dissipation function are employed to analyze the loss mechanism. The slotted profile broadens the low loss range towards the positive incidence range. The slotted profile allows a higher diffusion factor (DF) than the datum profile. It is hard to distinguish failure simply based on the DF values, whereas the Zweifel loading coefficient connects well with the low momentum deficit in the profile trailing edge. The peak of the V-shaped distributions in the Ψ - θ... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: benzene-free, biogasoline, increased octane number, isomerization, waste-originated feedstock
The thermal and catalytic conversion processes of alternative feedstocks (e.g., waste and biomass) to different engine fuels can result in the formation of a significant amount of light hydrocarbons as by-products in the boiling range of gasoline. The properties of these C5/C6 hydrocarbons need to be improved due to many reasons, e.g., their benzene content, and/or poor oxidation stability (high olefin content) and low octane number ( ca. 93 %) in the case of Pt/Al2O3/Cl. In addition, the octane number was also enhanced (ca. 32 > ca. 27 unit) in the products compared to the feedstock. This was because a higher isoparaffin content can be obtained at a lower operating temperature. Moreover, cracking side reactions take place to a lesser extent. The utilization of these isomerized bio-origin light fractions can contribute to the competitiveness of second-generation biofuels.

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: finite element analysis, flow distribution, process and power industry equipment
A new strategy for fast, approximate analyses of fluid flow and heat transfer is presented. It is based on Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and is intended for large yet structurally fairly simple heat transfer equipment commonly used in process and power industries (e.g., cross-flow tube bundle heat exchangers), which can be described using sets of interconnected 1-D meshes. The underlying steady-state model couples an FEA-based (linear) predictor step with a nonlinear corrector step, which results in the ability to handle both laminar and turbulent flows. There are no limitations in terms of the allowed temperature range other than those potentially stemming from the usage of fluid physical property computer libraries. Since the fluid flow submodel has already been discussed in the referenced conference paper, the present article focuses on the prediction of the tube side and the shell side temperature fields. A simple cross-flow tube bundle heat exchanger from the literature and a heat... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: counter-rotating roll cells, eigenspectra, proper orthogonal decomposition, wind farms
Large scale coherent structures in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) are known to contribute to the power generation in wind farms. In order to understand the dynamics of large scale structures, we perform proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) analysis of a finite sized wind turbine array canopy in the current paper. The POD analysis sheds light on the dynamics of large scale coherent modes as well as on the scaling of the eigenspectra in the heterogeneous wind farm. We also propose adapting a novel Fourier-POD (FPOD) modal decomposition which performs POD analysis of spanwise Fourier-transformed velocity. The FPOD methodology helps us in decoupling the length scales in the spanwise and streamwise direction when studying the 3D energetic coherent modes. Additionally, the FPOD eigenspectra also provide deeper insights for understanding the scaling trends of the three-dimensional POD eigenspectra and its convergence, which is inherently tied to turbulent dynamics. Understanding the be... [more]

Keywords: available energy, balance of energy, Energy, Energy Conversion, energy flux, energy interactions, Energy Storage, entropy flux, Gyftopoulos–Beretta exposition, irreversibility, mass flux, neoclassical Navier–Stokes, volume flux
The seminal Navier−Stokes equations were stated even before the creation of the foundations of thermodynamics and its first and second laws. There is a widespread opinion in the literature on thermodynamic cycles that the Navier−Stokes equations cannot be taken as a thermodynamically correct model of a local “working fluid”, which would be able to describe the conversion of “heating” into “working” (Carnot’s type cycles) and vice versa (Afanasjeva’s type cycles). Also, it is overall doubtful that “cycle work is converted into cycle heat” or vice versa. The underlying reason for this situation is that the Navier−Stokes equations come from a time when thermodynamic concepts such as “internal energy” were still poorly understood. Therefore, this paper presents a new exposition of thermodynamically consistent Navier−Stokes equations. Following that line of reasoning—and following Gyftopoulos and Beretta’s exposition of thermodynamics—we introduce the basic concepts of thermodynamics such a... [more]
A Predictive Study of a New VCR Engine with High Expansion Ratio and High-Efficiency Potential under Heavy Load Conditions
Jiansheng Lin, Shu Yang
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: heavy-load efficiency, overexpansion ratio, theoretical thermal efficiency, variable compression ratio
Facing the future, whether working alone or with electric motors, a new type of variable compression ratio (VCR) engine that can achieve a high thermal efficiency under heavy load conditions is necessary. Hence, we propose a dual shaft control variable compression ratio (DSC-VCR) engine based on a gear-driven eccentric sleeve. With the improved position of gears, DSC-VCR allows for double larger gears to share the load, and the engine can operate with a larger eccentric size and a narrower adjustment range compared to other similar mechanisms. This helps to reduce the difficulty of chamber shape design, avoid collisions between valves and piston, and above all, makes the engine operate with a larger overexpansion ratio (OER, the ratio of expansion stroke and compression stroke) under all conditions to improve engine efficiency. Based on a 1.5 T four-cylinder engine, the OER can be increased to over 1.16 with the eccentric size of 6.5 mm. According to the theoretical thermal efficiency... [more]

Keywords: geothermal heat exchanger, nanofluid, particle diameter, particle sphericity
The geothermal heat exchanger system is one of the most energy-efficient and environmentally friendly building service systems. In the present study, CuO/water nanofluid was used as the heat transfer fluid to enhance the energy efficiency of the geothermal heat exchangers. A three-dimensional numerical model was employed to investigate the effect of nanoparticle diameter and sphericity on the thermal performance of the geothermal heat exchanger, and it was well validated against the experimental results of nanofluids in the geothermal heat exchangers. The numerical results showed that nanoparticles with a diameter of 5 nm and 50 nm were not recommended for the nanofluids used in the geothermal heat exchangers due to the performance efficiency coefficient lower than 1, and the optimum diameter was 40 nm, which had the highest performance efficiency coefficient (1.004875). Moreover, the spherical particle-based nanofluid was characterized by the 8.55% higher energy efficiency, in compari... [more]

Keywords: charging station, electric vehicle, electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE), Kriging, location, queueing model, traffic
Establishing electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) to keep up with the increasing number of electric vehicles (EVs) is the most realistic and direct means of promoting their spread. Using traffic data collected in one area; we estimated the EV charging demand and selected priority fast chargers; ranging from high to low charging demand. A queueing model was used to calculate the number of fast chargers required in the study area. Comparison of the existing distribution of fast chargers with that suggested by the traffic load eliminating method demonstrated the validity of our traffic-based location approach.

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: fracture water flow, ground heat exchanger, ground source heat pump
The ground source heat pump (GSHP) is receiving increasing attention due to the global trend of energy-saving and emission reduction. However, projects with ground heat exchangers (GHEs) buried in fractured rock bodies are scarce, and the impacts of water flow in fractures on the system performance are short of detailed investigations. In this paper, a three-dimensional model was built to study the temperature distribution underground and the relative performance of heat pumps and GHEs influenced by groundwater flow in fractures. Three factors including fluid flow velocities in fractures, the number of fractures and the distributions of fractures were taken into consideration, a range of indicators including outlet temperature of GHEs, mean temperature of “Energy Storage Rock Body” (ESRB) and heat injection rate per unit length were examined. It was found that the heat injection rate per unit length of a U-pipe in fractured rock body could be up to 78.83% higher than that of a U-pipe i... [more]

Within the framework of blade aerodynamic design, the maximum aerodynamic efficiency, power production, and minimum thrust force are the targets to obtain. This paper describes an improved optimization framework for blade aerodynamic design under realistic conditions, while considering multiple design parameters. The relationship between the objective function and the design parameters, such as the chord length, maximum chord, and twist angle, were obtained by using the second-order response surface methodology (RSM). Moreover, the identified parameters were organized to optimize the aerodynamic design of the blades. Furthermore, the initial and optimized blade geometries were compared and showed that the performance of the optimized blade improved significantly. In fact, the efficiency was increased by approximately 10%, although its thrust was not varied. In addition, to demonstrate the improvement in the resulting optimized blades, the annual energy production (AEP) was estimated wh... [more]

Keywords: heat transfer, multilayer dual-tubing injection, polymer flooding, thermal-viscosity coupling
Multilayer separate polymer injection in concentric dual-tubing is a special method for enhancing oil recovery in later development stage of the multilayer formation. During the injection process, heat exchange occurs among the inner tubing, tubing annulus and formation, making the thermal transfer process more complicated than traditional one. This work focuses on the polymer flowing characteristics during the multilayer separate polymer flooding injection process in the wellbore. A temperature−viscosity numerical model is derived to investigate the influencing factors on polymer dual-tubing injection process. Then, an estimate-correct method is introduced to derive the numerical solutions. Several influences have been discussed, including the axial temperature distribution, viscosity distribution, pressure drop, and flow pattern of polymer. Results show that under low injecting rates, below 5 m3/d, formation temperature will greatly decrease the polymer viscosity. When the injecting... [more]

Keywords: battery sizing, electrified propulsion, li-ion battery, optimal energy management, performance degradation modelling, powertrain optimization
Heavy-duty hybrid electric vehicles and marine vessels need a sizeable electric energy storage system (ESS). The size and energy management strategy (EMS) of the ESS affects the system performance, cost, emissions, and safety. Traditional power-demand-based and fuel-economy-driven ESS sizing and energy management has often led to shortened battery cycle life and higher replacement costs. To consider minimizing the total lifecycle cost (LCC) of hybrid electric propulsion systems, the battery performance degradation and the life prediction model is a critical element in the optimal design process. In this work, a new Li-ion battery (LIB) performance degradation model is introduced based on a large set of cycling experiment data on LiFePO4 (LFP) batteries to predict their capacity decay, resistance increase and the remaining cycle life under various use patterns. Critical parameters of the semi-empirical, amended equivalent circuit model were identified using least-square fitting. The mod... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: augmenting path, demand uncertainty, power flow control, power fluctuations, renewable energy sources
This paper discusses a structural property for a power system to continue a safe operation under power fluctuation caused by fluctuating power sources and loads. Concerns over global climate change and gas emissions have motivated development and integration of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar to fulfill power demand. The energy generated from these sources exhibits fluctuations and uncertainty which is uncontrollable. In addition, the power fluctuations caused by power loads also have the same consequences on power system. To mitigate the effects of uncontrollable power fluctuations, a power flow control is presented which allocates power levels for controllable power sources and loads and connections between power devices. One basic function for the power flow control is to balance the generated power with the power demand. However, due to the structural limitations, i.e., the power level limitations of controllable sources and loads and the limitation of power flow ch... [more]
