Demand Response Control of Space Heating in Three Different Building Types in Finland and Germany
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: demand response, district heating, rule-based control, space heating
Demand response has been noted as a major element of future smart energy systems. However, there is still a lack of knowledge about the demand response actions in different conditions—including climate, dynamic energy price, and building types. This study examines energy and cost saving potential of the rule-based demand response in district heating network, in three different building types, in Germany and Finland. The studied building types are apartment buildings, cultural centers, and office buildings. The real-time pricing-based demand response is applied to space heating under the climate conditions of Helsinki, Finland and Hamburg, Germany. Moreover, the typical synthetic dynamic price data, which are based on both counties’ district heating production structure, is applied separately for each countries’ cases. Simulations of this study are conducted with validated simulation tool IDA ICE. The results present that the demand response can provide energy and cost savings around 0.... [more]

Assessment of the Electromagnetic Field Exposure during the Use of Portable Radios in the Context of Potential Health Effects
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: contact current, electromagnetic hazard, electromyography, induced current, neuromuscular system, occupational exposure, specific absorption rate (SAR)
The paper presents research on the electromagnetic hazards related to the flow of electric currents throughout the bodies of employees using portable radios. The values often exceed established limits, which may lead to potential dysfunctions of the body and affect the safety of performed professional duties. The measurements of the electric field (E-field) distribution of a typical commercial portable radio, the limb contact current calculations, and the computer simulations determining a specific absorption rate (SAR) were supplemented with pilot neurophysiological tests. The assessment indicated a large spatial variability of the E-field strength around the devices. The head of the operator and the hand holding the radio were often in the electromagnetic field (EMF), which exceeded the established limits. The calculated SAR values ranged within the permitted limits. The conducted neurophysiological tests showed no effects of EMF exposure in comparison to the control group. The asses... [more]

Robust Control of Shunt Active Power Filters: A Dynamical Model-Based Approach with Verified Controllability
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: controllability, H∞ controller, H∞-uPI controller, inefficient powers, Shunt Active Power Filter (SAPF)
This paper presents the robust control of Three-Leg Split-Capacitor Shunt Active Power Filters (TLSC SAPFs) by means of structured H∞ controllers for reactive, unbalanced, and harmonic compensation and the DC-link bus voltage regulation. Robust controller synthesis is performed based on the TLSC SAPF dynamical model including power losses in passive elements. Before the control implementation, a systematic procedure for the nonlinear controllability verification of the converter and its quantification using the set-theoretic approach is presented. Controllability verification serves to accurately design the SAPF’s operation region. Thus, a Voltage Oriented Control (VOC) structure is implemented by using two different approaches to determine the PI controller parameters: (1) the traditional Pole-Placement method (PP-PI) and (2) the H∞-PI structured synthesis approach, which leads to PI robust controllers. From the latter approach, two sets of parameters are obtained. The first set consi... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: driver’s intention, jerk, method of starting control, new-energy vehicle, state-machine
In order to improve the starting smoothness of new-energy vehicles under multiple working conditions and meet the driving intention better, and to make the control strategy have high portability and integration, a starting control method for vehicle based on state machine is designed. Based on inclination, starting of vehicle is divided into three working conditions: flat road, slight slope and steep slope. The method of vehicle starting control is designed, which includes five control states: default state control, torque pre-loading control, anti-rollback control, pedal control and PI (Proportion-Intergral) creep control. The simulation is carried out under the conditions of flat road, slight slope and steep slope. In terms of flat road and light slope, the vehicle travels below 3 km/h according to the driver’s intention, the speed is stable at 8 km/h during the creeping control phase and the jerk is lower than 5 m/s3. Balancing Energy Efficiency with Indoor Comfort Using Smart Control Agents: A Simulative Case Study
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: building control systems, building energy systems, centralized building optimization and control, distributed building optimization and control, energy-sustainable buildings, Modelica-based test bed
Modern literature exhibits numerous centralized control approaches—event-based or model assisted—for tackling poor energy performance in buildings. Unfortunately, even novel building optimization and control (BOC) strategies commonly suffer from complexity and scalability issues as well as uncertain behavior as concerns large-scale building ecosystems—a fact that hinders their practical compatibility and broader applicability. Moreover, decentralized optimization and control approaches trying to resolve scalability and complexity issues have also been proposed in literature. Those approaches usually suffer from modeling issues, utilizing an analytically available formula for the overall performance index. Motivated by the complications in existing strategies for BOC applications, a novel, decentralized, optimization and control approach—referred to as Local for Global Parameterized Cognitive Adaptive Optimization (L4GPCAO)—has been extensively evaluated in a simulative environment, con... Small Hydropower Plants with Variable Speed Operation—An Optimal Operation Curve Determination
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: AC-AC converters, control design, hydraulic systems, hydroelectric power generation, power generation control, variable speed drives
In recent times, much attention has been paid to small hydropower plants (SHPs) with variable speed operation and different control techniques. Control complexity in SHPs is mainly caused by specific steady-state features of the water turbine, the long time constants of the hydraulic system and significant seasonal and/or aging-related deterioration in the system performance. This paper presents the most important features of the turbine model from a control point of view. It classifies control techniques for SHPs with variable speed operation in terms of the turbine type and SHP function (run-of-the-river and reservoir). Furthermore, various control methods are analysed taking into account the complexity of the method, dynamics, adaptability and applicability. The novelty of this study is the proposal of a simple, universal analytical formula, which, based on the basic dimensions of the turbine, determines the optimal operating curve. The proposed formula is verified on a real SHP 150... [more]

Analysis of Building Parameter Uncertainty in District Heating for Optimal Control of Network Flexibility
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: building parameter uncertainty, district heating, heat demand flexibility, optimal control, robust control
Network flexibility is the use of the thermal capacity of water that is contained in the district heating network pipes to store energy and shift the heat load in time. Through optimal control, this network flexibility can aid in applications such as peak shaving and operational heat pump optimisation. Yet, optimal control requires perfect predictions and complete knowledge of the system characteristics. In reality, this is not the case and uncertainties exist. To obtain insight into the importance of these uncertainties, this paper studies the influence of imperfect knowledge of building parameters on the optimal network flexibility activation and its performance. It is found that for the optimisation of heat pump operation, building parameter uncertainties do not present large risks. For peak shaving, a more robust result can be achieved by activating more network flexibility than may be required.

A Methodology for Long-Term Model Predictive Control of Hybrid Geothermal Systems: The Shadow-Cost Formulation
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control-oriented modeling, hybrid geothermal systems, long-term predictions, Model Predictive Control, shadow cost
Model Predictive Control (MPC) predictive’s nature makes it attractive for controlling high-capacity structures such as thermally activated building systems (TABS). Using weather predictions in the order of days, the system is able to react in advance to changes in the building heating and cooling needs. However, this prediction horizon window may be sub-optimal when hybrid geothermal systems are used, since the ground dynamics are in the order of months and even years. This paper proposes a methodology that includes a shadow-cost in the objective function to take into account the long-term effects that appear in the borefield. The shadow-cost is computed for a given long-term horizon that is discretized over time using predictions of the building heating and cooling needs. The methodology is applied to a case with only heating and active regeneration of the ground thermal balance. Results show that the formulation with the shadow cost is able to optimally use the active regeneration,... [more]

Performance Review of Three Car Integrated ABS Types: Development of a Tire Independent Wheel Speed Control
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: ABS, discrete PID, longitudinal control, vehicle stability control, wheel speed control
This study concerns the development and testing of three types of Anti-lock Brake Systems (ABS): a standard on-off wheel’s acceleration control; a wheel’s longitudinal slip controller based on a discrete Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control; and a novel type of ABS that involves controlling the wheel’s speed through a discrete PID. This work was developed inside a wider project that will lead to the implementation of stability control systems in a prototype car. For this reason, the typologies of ABS must not require extra sensors compared to those in standard vehicles: Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) and 4-wheel speed sensors. Furthermore, they must be easily integrated with other controls and electronic components in terms of sampling time and values. The standard ABS seems more appropriate than the others two because it uses only parameters defined by sensors and it has a simple architecture that does not have the problem of computational time. However, in recent years, ca... [more]

Wind Inertial Response Based on the Center of Inertia Frequency of a Control Area
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: FORTRAN, frequency response metrics, inertial response, low inertia, PSS/E, the center of inertia, wind integration
As a result of the increased integration of power converter-connected variable speed wind generators (VSWG), which do not provide rotational inertia, concerns about the frequency stability of interconnected power systems permanently arise. If the inertia of a power system is insufficient, wind power plants’ participation in the inertial response should be required. A trendy solution for the frequency stability improvement in low inertia systems is based on utilizing so-called “synthetic” or “virtual” inertia from modern VSWG. This paper presents a control scheme for the virtual inertia response of wind power plants based on the center of inertia (COI) frequency of a control area. The PSS/E user written wind inertial controller based on COI frequency is developed using FORTRAN. The efficiency of the controller is tested and applied to the real interconnected power system of Southeast Europe. The performed simulations show certain conceptual advantages of the proposed controller in compa... [more]

Influence of Variable Damping Coefficient on Efficiency of TMD with Inerter
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: semi-active damper, tunable dashpot, tuned mass damper with inerter
In this paper, we study the dynamics of a two-degree freedom system consisting of the main body and tuned mass damper with inerter (TMDI). We add the dash-pot with variable damping coefficient to TMDI to study the overall efficiency of the device. We investigate different types of the non-linear characteristic of the dash-pot. We investigate devices in which damping coefficient change according to the relative displacement or the relative velocity between the damped mass and tuned mass damper. We also include in the investigation of different types of control functions. We show the two-parameter diagrams presenting the main body’s maximum amplitude versus the frequency of excitation of the damped body and different control parameter. We show how the application of a non-linear damper lets us control the main system’s oscillation amplitude.

Adaptive Control of HVDC Links for Frequency Stability Enhancement in Low-Inertia Systems
April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: frequency control, HVDC-based power system, low-inertia power systems, modular multilevel converter
Decarbonization of power systems has put Renewable Energy Sources (RES) at the forefront when it comes to electric power generation. The increasing shares of converter-connected renewable generation cause a decrease of the rotational inertia of the Electric Power System (EPS), and consequently deteriorate the system capability to withstand large load-generation imbalances. Low-inertia systems are subjected to fast and large frequency changes in case of in-feed loss, where the traditional primary frequency control is not sufficient to preserve the frequency stability and to maintain the frequency above the critical value. One possible solution to this rising problem is seen in Fast Frequency Response (FFR) provided by the High-Voltage Direct-Current (HVDC)-based systems. This paper presents the adaptive FFR control of HVDC-based systems for frequency stability enhancement in the low-inertia system. The EPS is considered as a “black box” and the HVDC response is determined only using the... [more]

April 11, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: Bayesian networks, decision support systems, decision theory, elevator control algorithm, intelligent elevator system, smart building, smart city
A fast and reliable vertical transportation system is an important component of modern office buildings. Optimization of elevator control strategies can be easily done using the state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms. This study presents a novel method for optimal dispatching of conventional passenger elevators using the information obtained by surveillance cameras. It is assumed that a real-time video is processed by an image processing system that determines the number of passengers and items waiting for an elevator car in hallways and riding the lifts. It is supposed that these numbers are also associated with a given uncertainly probability. The efficiency of our novel elevator control algorithm is achieved not only by the probabilistic utilization of the number of people and/or items waiting but also from the demand to exhaustively serve a crowded floor, directing to it as many elevators as there are available and filling them up to the maximum allowed weight. Keywords: carboniferous, hong-che fault zone, junggar basin, main controlling factors of hydrocarbon accumulation, volcanic reservoir
The Hong-Che Fault Zone is one of the important oil and gas enrichment zones in the Junggar Basin, especially in the Carboniferous. In recent five years, it has been proven that the Carboniferous volcanic rock has 140 million tons of oil reserves, and has built the Carboniferous volcanic reservoir with a capacity of million tons. Practice has proven that the volcanic rocks in this area have great potential for oil and gas exploration and development. To date, Carboniferous volcanic reservoirs have been discovered in well areas such as Che 32, Che 47, Che 91, Chefeng 3, Che 210, and Che 471. The study of drilling, logging, and seismic data shows that the Carboniferous volcanic reservoirs in the Hong-Che Fault Zone are mainly distributed in the hanging wall of the fault zone, and oil and gas have mainly accumulated in the high part of the structure. The reservoirs are controlled by faults and lithofacies in the plane and are vertically distributed within 400 m from the top of the Carboni... [more]

Renewable/Fuel Cell Hybrid Power System Operation Using Two Search Controllers of the Optimal Power Needed on the DC Bus
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: electrical energy efficiency, fuel-saving, Optimization, proton-exchange membrane fuel cell, safe and healthy strategy
In this paper, the optimal and safe operation of a hybrid power system based on a fuel cell system and renewable energy sources is analyzed. The needed DC power resulting from the power flow balance on the DC bus is ensured by the FC system via the air regulator or the fuel regulator controlled by the power-tracking control reference or both regulators using a switched mode of the above-mentioned reference. The optimal operation of a fuel cell system is ensured by a search for the maximum of multicriteria-based optimization functions focused on fuel economy under perturbation, such as variable renewable energy and dynamic load on the DC bus. Two search controllers based on the global extremum seeking scheme are involved in this search via the remaining fueling regulator and the boost DC−DC converter. Thus, the fuel economy strategies based on the control of the air regulator and the fuel regulator, respectively, on the control of both fueling regulators are analyzed in this study. The... [more]

Load Frequency Control of Photovoltaic Generation-Integrated Multi-Area Interconnected Power Systems Based on Double Equivalent-Input-Disturbance Controllers
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: equivalent input disturbance, load frequency control, multi-area interconnected power system, photovoltaic generation subsystem
With the rapid increase of photovoltaic (PV) penetration and distributed grid access, photovoltaic generation (PVG)-integrated multi-area power systems may be disturbed by more uncertain factors, such as PVG, grid-tie inverter parameters, and resonance. These uncertain factors will exacerbate the frequency fluctuations of PVG integrated multi-area interconnected power systems. For such system, this paper proposes a load frequency control (LFC) strategy based on double equivalent-input-disturbance (EID) controllers. The PVG linear model and the multi-area interconnected power system linear model were established, respectively, and the disturbances were caused by grid voltage fluctuations in PVG subsystem and PV output power fluctuation and load change in multi-area interconnected power system. In PVG subsystems and multi-area interconnected power systems, two EID controllers add differently estimated equivalent system disturbances, which has the same effect as the actual disturbance, to... Double Loop Network for Combined Heating and Cooling in Low Heat Density Areas
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: district cooling, district heating, double loop network, power-to-heat, ultra-low temperatures
This study investigated a double loop network operated with ultra-low supply/return temperatures of 45/25 °C as a novel solution for low heat-density areas in Denmark and compared the proposed concept with a typical tree network and with individual heat pumps to each end-users rather than district networks. It is a pump-driven system, where the separate circulation of supply and return flow increased the flexibility of the system to integrate and displace heating and cooling energy along the network. Despite the increased use of central and local water pumps to operate and control the system, the simulated overall pump energy consumption was 0.9% of the total energy consumption. This was also an advantage at the design stage as the larger pressure gradient, up to 570 Pa/m, allowed minimal pipe diameters. In addition, the authors proposed the installation of electrically heated vacuum-insulated micro tanks of 10 L on the primary side of each building substation as a supplementary heatin... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: direct power control, doubly fed induction generator, extended power theory, unbalanced grid voltage, voltage modulated
This paper develops a voltage modulated direct power control (VM-DPC) strategy of a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) using extended power theory under unbalanced grid voltage conditions. By introducing the modulated voltage of the active and reactive powers and the non-linear VM controller, the proposed VM-DPC strategy enables the generator dynamics to change from the time-varying differential equations into the time-invariant ones. Then, in order to deal with the voltage unbalance, three available power feedbacks, a combination of real active power and extended reactive power, a combination of extended active power and real reactive power, a combination of extended active power and extended reactive power, are developed. This paper evaluates the potential energy savings when switchable insulation systems (SIS) are applied to walls of residential buildings located in Belgium and other locations in Europe. The study considers two low-energy prototypical dwellings (an apartment and a detached house) that are representative of post-2010 constructions and renovations in Belgium. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: DC motor, sensorless, super-twisting, velocity control
A DC motor velocity control in feedback systems usually requires a velocity sensor, which increases the controller cost. Additionally, the velocity sensor used in industrial applications presents several disadvantages such as maintenance requirements and signal conditioning. In this work, we propose a robust velocity control scheme applied to a DC motor based on estimation strategies using a sliding-mode observer. This means that measurements with mechanical sensors are not required in the controller design. The proposed observer estimates the rotational velocity and load torque of the motor. This article presents a 125-day experiment to investigate model predictive heat pump control. The experiment was performed in two parallel operated systems with identical components during the heating season. Generating electricity from enormous energy contained in oceans is an important means to develop and utilize marine sustainable energy. An offshore marine current generator set (MCGS) is a system that runs in seas to produce electricity from tremendous energy in tidal streams.
