Development and Experimental Implementation of Active Tilt Control System Using a Servo Motor Actuator for Narrow Tilting Electric Vehicle
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: actuator, direct tilt control, servo motor, state feedback control, three-wheeled electric vehicles, vehicle dynamics
Light electric vehicles are alternative solutions to passenger cars in terms their lower costs and space saving in city traffic. Narrow tilting vehicles (NTV), known also as three−wheeled vehicles, can be equipped with an active tilting stability controller that tilts the vehicle automatically during cornering to enable lateral stability. There are mainly direct tilt control (DTC), steering tilt control (STC), and combined DTC−STC methods described in the literature. The DTC method is typically applied up to 10 km/h vehicle speeds. Considering city traffic and frequent start−stop cycles, the DTC method needs to be improved in terms of lower actuator torque and energy consumption. DTC can be designed by using either hydraulic or servo motor actuators. In state of the art, the servo motor actuator has not been studied in detail considering its integration and application aspects. Mostly, the actuator has been considered as a black box model. Proposed control method in this study enables... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control system, grid current control, inverter connected to the grid, robust control
Robust predictive control is presented in this article using a three-vector modulation for a grid-connected three-phase inverter. The aims of this article are proposing a robust controller that is able to deal with some variations of parameters that occur in practical systems and demonstrating the performance of the controller with experimental tests that change the inductance and consequently the parasitic resistance of the plant; the same controller can predictive the changes to obtain the optimal performance. The article also presents mathematical modeling for plants and controllers and a modulation method to solve the variable frequency problem. Experimental tests corroborate the expected results and validate the controller’s efficiency according to the control system analysis requirements and the IEEE 1547.2-2008 standard.

Numerical Study of Porous Treatments on Controlling Flow around a Circular Cylinder
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: cylinder flow, flow control, vortex shedding, wake evolution
Porous materials fixed on and downstream the cylinder can reach a much better effect in suppressing wall pressure fluctuations. In the present paper, numerical comparative studies have been conducted to investigate passive control of flow past a cylinder surface, in which three schemes with different porous treatments are applied to compare their pros and cons. The results show all of the three schemes of porous materials increase the time-averaged flow drag and reduce fluctuations of lift and drag forces. It can be concluded the velocity gradient reduction inside the boundary layer and the vortex shedding delay through porous coating, as well as reverse transition from turbulent vortex shedding into laminar through porous treatment downstream the cylinder, are main flow control mechanisms of porous materials. These mechanisms all reduce fluctuations of lift and drag fluctuations, but have a distinct effect on the features of wake evolution, such as the wake width and length as well as... [more]

A Sensitivity-Based Three-Phase Weather-Dependent Power Flow Algorithm for Networks with Local Voltage Controllers
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: distributed generators, local voltage controllers, power flow, switching delays, weather and magnetic effects
Local voltage controllers (LVCs) are important components of a modern distribution system for regulating the voltage within permissible limits. This manuscript presents a sensitivity-based three-phase weather-dependent power flow algorithm for distribution networks with LVCs. More specifically, the proposed algorithm has four distinct characteristics: (a) it considers the three-phase unbalanced nature of distribution systems, (b) the operating state of LVCs is calculated using sensitivity parameters having accelerated convergence, (c) it considers the precise switching sequence of LVCs based on their reaction time delays, and (d) the nonlinear influence of weather variations in the power flow is also taken into consideration. Simulations and validation results presented indicate that the proposed approach outperforms other existing algorithms with respect to the accuracy and speed of convergence, thus making it a promising power flow tool for accurate distribution system analysis.

Optimization-Based Capacitor Balancing Method with Customizable Switching Reduction for CHB Converters
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: capacitor balance, cascaded H-bridge converter (CHB), common-mode voltage, commutations reduction, multilevel converter, optimal control, pulse-width modulation (PWM), switching losses
This paper presents a method for switching reduction in cascaded H-bridge converters. Given the wide applicability of this topology, it would be especially desirable to increase its efficiency with switching losses reduction techniques. Since this type of converter requires voltage balancing methods, several modulation methods consider the possibility of combining the balancing and switching reduction goals together. In this paper, a previously disclosed optimization-based balance method was modified further to consider the switching losses in its objective function. Each commutation was penalized in proportion to the phase current and the module voltage, thus avoiding commutations that would produce the most losses but tolerating low-losses commutations. The structure of the original method was maintained so that the algorithm could be applied with minimal change. The results show that it is possible to reduce the switching up to 14% without any noticeable drawback and up to 22% at th... [more]

Data Screening Based on Correlation Energy Fluctuation Coefficient and Deep Learning for Fault Diagnosis of Rolling Bearings
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: correlation energy fluctuation coefficient, DBN optimized by IPSO, fault recognition rate, learning sample screening, rolling bearing
The accuracy of the intelligent diagnosis of rolling bearings depends on the quality of its vibration data and the accuracy of the state identification model constructed accordingly. Aiming at the problem of “poor quality” of data and “difficult to select” structural parameters of the identification model, a method is proposed to integrate data cleaning in order to select effective learning samples and optimize the selection of the structural parameters of the deep belief network (DBN) model. First, by calculating the relative energy fluctuation value of the finite number of intrinsic function components using the variational modal decomposition of the rolling bearing vibration data, the proportion of each component containing the fault component is characterized. Then, high-quality learning samples are obtained through screening and reconstruction to achieve the effective cleaning of vibration data. Second, the improved particle swarm algorithm (IPSO) is used to optimize the number of... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: estimation, observer, Optimization, permanent magnet synchronous machine, sensorless control, sliding-mode control, switching function
The sensorless control of the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) has attracted wide attention due to its high reliability, economic and safety benefits. A fast and high-precision rotor-position estimation is inevitable for the implementation of sensorless control. Sliding-mode observer (SMO) is a preferred solution for sensorless control by many industrial companies. This article addresses the comparison of different switching functions employed in the control structure of sensorless field-oriented control with SMO. The switching functions are classified and their influence on the performance of the PMSM is verified for different shaping coefficients (SC). In addition, a statistical evaluation of the switching functions is provided to find the optimal values of SC. An experimental and statistical evaluation validated the substitutability of signum and hyperbolic switching functions and optimal values of SC have been found.

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: crack width, different temperature fields, finite element analysis, large-scale prototype model test, massive reinforced concrete structure, steel-lined reinforced concrete penstock, thermal–mechanical coupling analysis, thermomechanical cohesive zone model
Massive reinforced concrete (MRC) structures are utilized in a variety of applications where both mechanical and thermal properties are of concern. A 1:2 large-scale test model of the steel-lined reinforced concrete penstock (a kind of MRC) and a coupled thermomechanical numerical analysis are both implemented to investigate the thermomechanical effects on structural behavior. Three different temperature fields and eight temperature gradients are selected to explore how the temperature affects the crack width, steel stress, and deformation. The results show that the numerical simulation results are consistent with the experimental results and that this method can be applied to other similar MRC structure analysis. The thermal effect can cause 10−3~10−2 mm thermal crack width and ±45 MPa thermal stress and this may lead the total crack width to exceed the limited value and the reinforcement stress beyond the yield strength. Consequently, the influence of the thermomechanical loads canno... [more]

A Study on Available Power Estimation Algorithm and Its Validation
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: available power, control algorithms, wind speed estimator
Three different algorithms that can be used to estimate the available power of a wind turbine are investigated and validated in this study. The first method is the simplest and using the power curve with the measured nacelle wind speed. The other two are to estimate the equivalent wind speed first without using the measured Nacelle wind speed and to estimate the available power from the rotor power equation. The two methods are different in that the second method is to use the drive-train model to estimate the rotor torque but the third method is to use a simplified equation to avoid sharp peaks in the wind speed estimation. Simulations were performed to validate the constructed available power estimation algorithms with the measured data of a 2 MW target wind turbine. It was found from the validation that the third available power estimation algorithm works properly and is closer to the power actually generated from the wind turbine than the other methods considered. In addition, the... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: BAS-PSO, energy consumption, Pontryagin Minimum Principle, torque vectoring distribution, vehicle dynamics model
This paper aims to study the torque optimization control of distributed drive electric vehicles in the cornering process and reduce the cornering energy consumption. The main energy consumption of the vehicle in the cornering process is analyzed clearly based on the 7-DOF vehicle dynamics model. The torque vectoring distribution (TVD) of a distributed drive electric vehicle in the process of turning was studied on the basis of the Pontryagin Minimum Principle (PMP). The Beetle Antenna Search−Particle Swarm Optimization (BAS-PSO) algorithm was used to optimize the torque distribution coefficient offline, and the algorithm was improved to improve the operation speed. Based on the vehicle dynamics characteristics, the table of torque distribution coefficient of minimum turning energy consumption and the optimal energy-saving degree of TVD control in different bending conditions were worked out.

Selection of Inertial and Power Curtailment Control Methods for Wind Power Plants to Enhance Frequency Stability
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: frequency stability, power curtailment, stepwise inertial control, supply and demand, wind power plant
As renewable energy penetrates the power system, system operators are required to curtail output power from generation units to balance the power supply and demand. However, large curtailment from wind power plants (WPPs) may instantly cause excessive output power decrement, causing system frequency to drop significantly before reaching its nominal value. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes a cooperative control framework to determine the operation of WPPs in two control methods, which are the stepwise inertial control (SIC) method and the curtailed control method. The proposed framework first determines the WPPs to operate in the curtailed control method to provide the required power curtailment. Next, it determines the WPPs to operate in the SIC method considering their releasable kinetic energy to provide an effective inertial response and compensate for the sudden excessive output power decrement caused by other WPPs operated in the curtailed control method. Therefo... [more]

Diagnostic Column Reasoning Based on Multi-Valued Evaluation of Residuals and the Elementary Symptoms Sequence
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: diagnostic reasoning, Fault Detection, fault diagnosis, fault isolation
The paper concerns a significant problem in the diagnostics of industrial processes, which is the need to achieve high fault distinguishability. High distinguishability results in the generation of precise diagnoses that enable making appropriate security decisions. In the known approaches, the efforts to obtain high distinguishability are focused on the selection of an appropriate set of generated residuals. The paper presents a new method of diagnostic reasoning using the notation of faults/diagnostic signals’ relations in the form of a Fault Isolation System (FIS), which enables the use of multivalent diagnostic signals. In addition, the proposed method uses knowledge (usually incomplete) about the sequence of symptoms. Reasoning was carried out on the basis of simple, physically possible signatures, resulting from the FIS. Assumptions and a diagnostic algorithm are given. The reasoning algorithm works in a step-by-step manner, after observing further symptoms. In each reasoning ste... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: control approaches, operating cost analysis, PVT, reinforcement learning, solar-assisted heat pump
This study aims to develop a controller to operate an energy system-consisting of a photovoltaic thermal (PVT) system combined with a heat pump, using the reinforcement learning approach to minimize the operating costs of the system. For this, the flow rate of the cooling fluid pumped through the PVT system is controlled. This flow rate determines the temperature increase of the cooling fluid while reducing the temperature of the PVT system. The heated-up cooling fluid is used to improve the heat pump’s coefficient of performance (COP). For optimizing the operation costs of such a system, first an extensive simulation model has been developed. Based on this technical model, a controller has been developed using the reinforcement learning approach to allow for a cost-efficient control of the flow rate. The results show that a successfully trained control unit based on the reinforcement learning approach can reduce the operating costs with an independent validation dataset. For the case... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: distinct element method, local mine stiffness, numerical modeling, strainburst, underground mining, yielding rockbolt
In this paper, a 2D distinct element method (DEM) model of a deep tunnel in an underground coal mine is built to thoroughly evaluate the effects of yielding (D-bolt and Roofex) and the traditional rockbolt (fully resin-grouted rebar) on controlling self-initiated strainbursts. The occurrence of self-initiated strainbursts is judged based on the stiffness difference between the loading system and rock masses for the first time. The results suggest that the total deformations of the tunnel supported with Roofex and resin-grouted rebar are 1.53 and 2.09 times that of D-bolts (1411 mm). The average velocities of detached rock blocks in the tunnel supported with Roofex and resin-grouted rebar are 3.22 and 3.97 m/s, respectively, which are much higher than that of D-bolts (0.34 m/s). 13 resin-grouted rebar bolts are broken during the strainburst, while D-bolts and Roofex survive. Compared with Roofex (295.16 kJ) and resin-grouted rebar (125.19 kJ), the D-bolt can reduce the most kinetic ener... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active power control, flying platform, FPGA, higher frequency power grid, PV system, reactive power compensation
The size reduction in on-board apparatuses in flying platforms, ships, and aerospace vehicles can be achieved by increasing the frequency of the on-board grid voltage. In the case of renewable powered platforms, a grid converter is used that has the primary task of feeding the generated energy into the on-board grid. The paper describes the developed control system of the grid converter, which, in addition to transferring the generated power to the single-phase grid, effectively compensates the reactive power occurring in it. The proposed structure of the proportional resonant regulator with finite gain that cooperates with the single-phase grid was discussed. The use of quadrature estimators of voltage and current enabled independent control of the active and reactive components of the current, thus compensating for the reactive power. The proposed control system structure was implemented on the FPGA platform and experimentally tested in steady state and dynamic condition considering... [more]

Keywords: fault tolerance, hysteresis SVPWM, multilevel inverter, reconfigurable
A hysteresis space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) reconfigurable fault-tolerant method for single-phase voltage source multi-level inverter with current tracking is proposed. Firstly, the influence of single switch open circuit fault and double switches open circuit fault on the voltage vector of the inverter is analyzed, and on this basis, the equivalent replacement of the voltage vector is obtained by using the topology reconstruction of the inverter, and the redundant voltage vectors with overlapping positions are preferred for equivalent replacement. If there are no coincident non-fault vectors, the other non-fault vectors with the closest position and effect are selected. The fault-tolerant method does not need the switching operation between the main power switching device and spare power switching device of the inverter, and can directly control the on−off process of the inverter reconfiguration unit through the driving signal of insulated gate bipolar translator (IGBT),... Flux-Weakening Drive for IPMSM Based on Model Predictive Control
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: flux-weakening drive, IPMSM, Model Predictive Control
This paper presents a flux-weakening model predictive control (FW-MPC) for the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) drive system. The FW control is a strategy to extend the IPMSM’s operating region. However, the primary FW needs to track the torque reference and maximize the electrical torque per current amplitude with the current and voltage limitations. The two objects make it impossible to solve the FW problem using the optimization method. We proposed an equivalent optimization problem to simplify the complex FW problem, including two objective functions. The MPC is selected as the controller due to its high robustness and transient performance. The constraints from the equivalent optimization problem are added in the MPC to control the IPMSM in the FW region. The simulation and experiment results indicate that the proposed FW-MPC is feasible and effective in driving the IPMSM in the FW region. The proposed FW-MPC can find the optimal point with the maximum electrica... [more]
