A Survey of Efficient Demand-Side Management Techniques for the Residential Appliance Scheduling Problem in Smart Homes
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: demand response, demand-side management, Optimization, residential appliance scheduling, smart home
The residential sector is a major contributor to the global energy demand. The energy demand for the residential sector is expected to increase substantially in the next few decades. As the residential sector is responsible for almost 40% of overall electricity consumption, the demand response solution is considered the most effective and reliable solution to meet the growing energy demands. Home energy management systems (HEMSs) help manage the electricity demand to optimize energy consumption without compromising consumer comfort. HEMSs operate according to multiple criteria, including electricity cost, peak load reduction, consumer comfort, social welfare, environmental factors, etc. The residential appliance scheduling problem (RASP) is defined as the problem of scheduling household appliances in an efficient manner at appropriate periods with respect to dynamic pricing schemes and incentives provided by utilities. The objectives of RASP are to minimize electricity cost and peak lo... [more]

Performance Analysis of an Electromagnetic Frequency Regulator under Parametric Variations for Wind System Applications
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: distributed generation, electromagnetic frequency regulator, performance analysis, renewable energy sources, root-locus method
The electromagnetic frequency regulator (EFR) device has proven to be an attractive solution for driving grid-connected electrical generators in distributed generation (DG) systems based on renewable energy sources (RES). However, the dynamic characteristic of the EFR has not yet been discussed for cases where its parameters vary from the nominal values. To evaluate this issue, this paper proposes a method for transient and steady-state performance analysis applied to the EFR device considering parametric variations. To perform this analysis, a dynamic model of the EFR device is derived, and its dynamic characteristics are discussed. Based on this model, the system’s controller gains are designed by using the root-locus method (RLM) to obtain the desired dynamic performance. Then, a sensitivity analysis of the closed-loop poles under the effect of parameters variation is performed. In addition, the paper also presents an analysis of the EFR-based system operating with the designed cont... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: calculation model, carbon emissions, fully mechanized mining, underground mining
With the ratification of the Paris Agreement at the Paris Climate Conference, reducing carbon emissions has become a global interest. Coal is one of the main industries causing carbon emissions; thus, quantifying carbon emissions from coal mining is an important step in reducing these emissions. Firstly, based on the life cycle idea, in this paper, we define the Carbon Emission Boundary of the fully mechanized coal mining method. Secondly, the carbon emission accounting model (B-R model) of fully mechanized coal mining is established, which includes the total amount of carbon emissions and the carbon emissions of each mining link during the mining process. The Fifth-II mining area of the Jinda Coal Mine in Tengzhou City is taken as an example. We collect the relevant data on carbon emissions in the mining process of the Jinda Coal Mine, and the B-R model is used to obtain the carbon emissions in the mining process of this mining area. Finally, the feasibility of the B-R model is furthe... [more]

March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: depositional microfacies, fractal dimension, pore throat characteristics, r35, sandstone reservoir
The Neogene Guantao Formation Reservoir in the PLOilfield is a unconsolidated sandstone with high porosity and high permeability. The reservoir diagenesis is weak and dominated by compaction diagenesis. At present, insufficient research into the relationship between the pore characteristics and sedimentary microfacies of shallow delta sandstone reservoirs restricts the prediction of favorable reservoir distribution. This article takes the unconsolidated sandstone reservoir of the Guantao Formation as the research object and analyzes the potential coupling relationship between pore characteristics and sedimentary microfacies. In this study, seven typical sedimentary microfacies were identified and the microscopic characteristics of different sedimentary microfacies reservoirs are described. The results show that the pore structure of various sedimentary microfacies is comprehensively influenced by the sedimentary rock texture, siliceous minerals, and clay mineral distribution. Impact of the KKL Correlation Model on the Activation of Thermal Energy for the Hybrid Nanofluid (GO+ZnO+Water) Flow through Permeable Vertically Rotating Surface
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: HAM, hybrid nanofluids, magnetic field, nonlinear thermal radiations, porous surface
The thermal energy transfer characteristics during hybrid nanofluid migration are studied in the presence of a variable magnetic field, heat source, and radiation. The flow is governed by the conservation laws of mass, momentum, and energy, whereas it is modeled by the coupled set of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs). Suitable similarity transformations are employed to convert the developed set of PDEs to a nonlinear system of coupled ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The simplified system of ODEs is solved by using the well-established analytical procedure of homotopy analysis method (HAM). The effects of varying the strength of the physical parameters on the thermal energy transfer during hybrid nanofluid motion between two plates in which one of the plate is porous, rotating, as well as stretching are investigated through tables and two-dimensional graphs. The porosity is modeled through the Koo−Kleinstreuer model (KKL) correlation. The analysis reveals that the... [more]

An Improved Approach to Calculate Eddy Current Loss in Soft Magnetic Materials Based on Measured Hysteresis Loops
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: eddy current loss, eddy currents, energy loss, hysteresis loop, soft magnetic materials
The paper presents a study of the influence of magnetic hysteresis on macroscopic eddy current losses. Usually, this loss is calculated within many simplifying assumptions, of which the most striking is not only neglecting the hysteresis, but also the nonlinearity of the material. To check how such simplifications affect the results, the loss was calculated taking into account the hysteresis phenomenon for several materials. For this purpose, an algorithm for solving Maxwell’s equations with magnetic characteristics given as a family of measured hysteresis loops was constructed. A new method for conversion between H and B fields using the measured hysteresis loops was also proposed. The results of calculations for three materials show that the eddy current loss calculated with magnetic hysteresis taken into account are smaller than those calculated via the classical formula obtained for linear materials. For the tested materials, the differences reach up to around 30%, depending on fre... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: decentralized controller, decoupling controller, hydrostatic transmission, nonlinear system, power regenerative dynamometer, relative gain array, wind turbine transmission
Dynamometers are used to evaluate the real-world performances of drivetrains in various loading conditions. Due to its superior power density, high bandwidth, and design flexibility, a hydrostatic power-regenerative dynamometer is an ideal candidate for hydrostatic wind turbine transmission testing. A dynamometer can emulate the wind turbine rotor dynamics and allow the investigation of the performance of a unique hydrostatic drivetrain without actually building the physical system. The proposed dynamometer is an energy-efficient system with counter-intuitive control challenges. This paper presents the dynamics, control synthesis, and experimental validation of a power-regenerative hydrostatic dynamometer. A fourth-order non-linear model with three inputs was formulated for the dynamometer. The strength of input−output couplings was identified, and two different decoupling controllers were designed and implemented. Recent Techniques Used in Home Energy Management Systems: A Review
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: heuristics, home energy management system, metaheuristics, MILP, Model Predictive Control
Power systems are going through a transition period. Consumers want more active participation in electric system management, namely assuming the role of producers−consumers, prosumers in short. The prosumers’ energy production is heavily based on renewable energy sources, which, besides recognized environmental benefits, entails energy management challenges. For instance, energy consumption of appliances in a home can lead to misleading patterns. Another challenge is related to energy costs since inefficient systems or unbalanced energy control may represent economic loss to the prosumer. The so-called home energy management systems (HEMS) emerge as a solution. When well-designed HEMS allow prosumers to reach higher levels of energy management, this ensures optimal management of assets and appliances. This paper aims to present a comprehensive systematic review of the literature on optimization techniques recently used in the development of HEMS, also taking into account the key factor... [more]

Detecting Wind Turbine Blade Icing with a Multiscale Long Short-Term Memory Network
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: blade icing detection, long short-term memory (LSTM) network, temporal feature learning, wavelet multiscale decomposition, wind turbine
Blade icing is one of the main problems of wind turbines installed in cold climate regions, resulting in increasing power generation loss and maintenance costs. Traditional blade icing detection methods greatly rely on dedicated sensors, such as vibration and acoustic emission sensors, which require additional installation costs and even reduce reliability due to the degradation and failures of these sensors. To deal with this challenge, this paper aims to develop a cost-effective detection system based on the existing operation data collected from the supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems which are already equipped in large-scale wind turbines. Considering that SCADA data is essentially a multivariate time series with inherent non-stationary and multiscale temporal characteristics, a new wavelet-based multiscale long short-term memory network (WaveletLSTM) approach is proposed for wind turbine blade icing detection. The proposed method incorporates wavelet-based mul... [more]

Effect of High-Rate Cycle Aging and Over-Discharge on NCM811 (LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2) Batteries
March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cyclic aging, lithium-ion battery, material analysis, over-discharge, thermal safety
Inconsistencies in a monomer battery pack can lead to the over-discharge of a single battery. Although deep over-discharge can be avoided by optimizing the battery control system, slight over-discharge still often occurs in the battery pack. The aging behavior of cylindrical NCM811 batteries under high-rate aging and over-discharge was studied. By setting the end-of-discharge of 1 V, the battery capacity rapidly decayed after 130 cycles. Additionally, the temperature sharply increased in the over-discharge stage. The micro short-circuit was found by the discharge voltage curve and impedance spectrum. Batteries with 100%, 79.6% and 50.9% SOH (state of health = Q_now/Q_new × 100%) as a result of high-rate aging and over-discharging were subjected to thermal testing in an adiabatic environment. The battery without high-rate aging and over-discharge did not experience thermal runaway. However, severe thermal runaway occurred in the 79.6% and 50.9% SOH batteries. Regarding the cyclic aging... March 1, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: energy management, power-to-hydrogen, receding horizon optimization, storage, sustainable wind-PV-hydrogen-storage microgrid
Hydrogen and renewable electricity-based microgrid is considered to be a promising way to reduce carbon emissions, promote the consumption of renewable energies and improve the sustainability of the energy system. In view of the fact that the existing day-ahead optimal operation model ignores the uncertainties and fluctuations of renewable energies and loads, a two-stage energy management model is proposed for the sustainable wind-PV-hydrogen-storage microgrid based on receding horizon optimization to eliminate the adverse effects of their uncertainties and fluctuations. In the first stage, the day-ahead optimization is performed based on the predicted outpower of WT and PV, the predicted demands of power and hydrogen loads. In the second stage, the intra-day optimization is performed based on the actual data to trace the day-ahead operation schemes. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: acid hydrolysis of cotton, biogas production, cotton, ethanol fermentation
Currently, most cotton textile waste is sent to landfill. However, due to the use of synthetic additives and the chemical treatment of cotton fibers, cotton textile waste is difficult to biodegrade. Cotton textile waste can also be subjected to material recycling, or to incineration/gasification to produce energy. Here, we present the optimization of acid hydrolysis of cotton yarn fibers for glucose efficiency. The cotton yarn hydrolysates showed great potential for replacing simple sugar solutions in fermentation media. The highest glucose concentration was obtained in the hydrolysates of cotton yarn hydrolyzed in a 2% solution of sulfuric acid or phosphoric acid at 140−160 °C for 2 h. After 2 h of hydrolysis at 140 °C with 2% H3PO4, the concentration of glucose in the cotton yarn hydrolysate (13.19 g/L) increased fivefold compared with cotton yarn treated under the same conditions with H2SO4 (2.65 g/L).
