Fangqi Chen, Xiaojie Liu, Yanpei Tian, Jon Goldsby, Yi Zheng
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: near-field, refractory, thermal emitter, thermophotovoltaics
Thermophotovoltaics is a promising technology for heat recovery and has garnered tremendous attention in the last decades. This work theoretically evaluates the performance of a thermophotovoltaic system equipped with refractory all-ceramic selective thermal emitters made of boron carbide, silicon carbide and beryllium oxide for a high working temperature of 2000 ∘C, which corresponds to the external quantum efficiency of a SiC/Si tandem cell. The influence of thickness and filling ratio on the emissivity of thermal emitters over the wavelength ranging from 0.2 μm to 2.5 μm is studied. The corresponding spectral heat flux and output power are analyzed as well. For a specific configuration, the parameters for the thermophotovoltaic system are obtained, including short circuit current, open circuit voltage, fill factor, total heat flux, output power and conversion efficiency. The proposed all-ceramic thermal emitter ensures the robustness in the high-temperature working condition due to... [more]
Research on Low-Voltage AC Series Arc-Fault Detection Method Based on Electromagnetic Radiation Characteristics

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: arc-fault detection method, characteristic frequency, electromagnetic radiation, loop antenna, operating arc
Arc fault is an important cause of electrical fire. At present, the arc-fault detection method based on current and voltage is vulnerable to the influence of a nonlinear load and switching operation in the line, resulting in misjudgment and omission. Therefore, an arc-fault detection method based on the characteristics of electromagnetic radiation is proposed. A low-voltage AC series arc-fault simulation platform is built, and a simple annular antenna is designed to receive an electromagnetic radiation signal. It is proved by experiments that electromagnetic radiation signals have similar characteristic frequencies (13.6−14.2 MHz) under different currents, loads, arc positions and arc occurrence times. At the same time, the electromagnetic radiation signal of a low-voltage AC series arc and normal switching operations are compared. The pulse oscillation time of the radiation signals of the operating arc (2 μs) is far shorter than that of the faulty arc (4 μs), and the characteristic fr... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: acid washing, biomass fuel, high heating value, hydrothermal carbonization, waste straw
To enhance the hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) process on biomass waste and improve the quality of biomass solid fuel. Corn straw was pretreated with acid washing and subsequently hydrothermally carbonized at 180−270 °C. The solid product obtained (hydrochars) was compared with the solid product produced from untreated hydrothermally carbonized straw. The results show that the acid pretreatment removed 7.9% of the ash from the straw. ICP and XRD analysis show that most of the alkali and alkaline earth metals have been removed. This addresses the defect of high ash content as the HTC temperature increases. The HHV of hydrochars produced by HTC after acid washing can reach 27.7 MJ/kg, which is nearly 10% higher than that of hydrochars prepared without acid washing pretreatment, and nearly 70% higher than that of straw raw materials. Elemental analysis and FTIR analysis show that the acid washing pretreatment changed the content and structure of the biomass components in the straw, resul... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: molecular dynamics, nanoscale, phonon localization, porous silicon, thermal cloak
Nanoscale thermal cloaks have great potential in the thermal protection of microelectronic devices, for example, thermal shielding of thermal components close to the heat source. Researchers have used graphene, crystalline silicon film, and silicon carbide to design a variety of thermal cloaks in different ways. In our previous research, we found that the porous structure has lower thermal conductivity compared to bulk silicon; thus, so we tried to use the porous structure to construct the functional region to control the heat flux. We first calculated the thermal conductivity of crystalline silicon and porous silicon films by means of nonequilibrium molecular dynamics, proving that the porous structure satisfied the conditions for building a thermal cloak. A rectangular cloak with a porous structure was constructed, and a crystalline silicon film was used as a reference to evaluate its performance by the index of the ratio of thermal cloaking. We found that the thermal cloak built wit... [more]

Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: antibiotic resistance, antimicrobial influence, long-term anaerobic digestion, methane, microbial community, sewage sludge
The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of simultaneous, long-term exposure to increasing concentrations of three classes of antimicrobials (β-lactams, fluoroquinolones and nitroimidazoles) on: (1) the efficiency of anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge, (2) qualitative and quantitative changes in microbial consortia that participate in methane fermentation, and (3) fate of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Long-term supplementation of sewage sludge with a combination of metronidazole, amoxicillin and ciprofloxacin applied at different doses did not induce significant changes in process parameters, including the concentrations of volatile fatty acids (VFAs), or the total abundance of ARGs. Exposure to antibiotics significantly decreased methane production and modified microbial composition. The sequencing analysis revealed that the abundance of OTUs characteristic of Archaea was not correlated with the biogas production efficiency. The study also demonstrated that the hydr... [more]

Keywords: Hydrogen, PEM, transition metal phosphides, water electrolysis
Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) water electrolysis (WE) produces H2 with a high degree of purity, requiring only water and energy. If the energy is provided from renewable energy sources, it releases “Green H2”, a CO2-free H2. PEMWE uses expensive and rare noble metal catalysts, which hinder their use at a large industrial scale. In this work, the electrocatalytic properties of Transition Metal Phosphides (TMP) catalysts supported on Carbon Black (CB) for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) were investigated as an alternative to Platinum Group Metals. The physico-chemical properties and catalytic performance of the synthesized catalysts were characterized. In the ex situ experiments, the 25% FeP/CB, 50% FeP/CB and 50% CoP/CB with overpotentials of −156.0, −165.9 and −158.5 mV for a current density of 100 mA cm−2 showed the best catalytic properties, thereby progressing to the PEMWE tests. In those tests, the 50% FeP/CB required an overpotential of 252 mV for a current density of 10 mA cm−... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: battery electric vehicle (BEV), hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), real-time simulation
Real-time simulations refer to the simulations of a physical system where model equations for one time-step are solved within the same time period as in reality. An FPGA/CPU-based real-time simulation platform is presented in this paper, with a full-electric vehicle model implemented in a central processing unit (CPU) board and an electric drive model implemented in a field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) board. It has been a challenge to interface two models solved with two different processors. In this paper, one open-loop and three closed-loop interfaces are proposed. Real-time simulation results show that the best method is to transmit electric machine speed from the vehicle model to the electric derive model, with feedback electric machine torque calculated in FPGA. In addition, a virtual vehicle testing tool (CarMaker) is used when building the vehicle model, achieving more accurate modeling of vehicle subsystems. The presented platform can be used to verify advanced vehicle cont... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: carbon dioxide (CO2), coke oven gas, CSR, ecology, emissions, energy saving, management, natural environment, Natural Gas, sustainable development
This article highlights the need to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by reducing energy consumption. Of course, this can be achieved in various ways, but inter alia, through the practical implementation of the assumptions contained in the CSR programs of individual companies, which include a component on environmental protection and counteracting global warming. The authors also describe a proposal to reduce CO2 emissions by using coke oven gas (if necessary) in exchange for natural gas. Currently, the largest sources of carbon dioxide emissions are the combustion of fossil fuels in power plants, transport—cars and planes, processes related to the production of industrial goods, and deforestation. In the preparation of the article, the analysis of the literature on the subject, analysis of documents, desk research, and two case studies were used. The main goal of the article is to present the possibilities of reducing CO2 emissions by implementing the assumptions of the CSR policy on th... [more]

Keywords: grid following, grid forming, modular multilevel converter (MMC), single cell per arm
Modular multilevel converters (MMC) can be used in several applications, especially (but not only) in high-voltage direct current (HVDC) and STATCOM. In order to develop experimental scaled-down test benches for lab validation, several projects have developed MMCs with a limited number of cells, but they need to use pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques to achieve acceptable power quality (because nearest level modulation (NLM), common in HVDC applications with hundreds of levels, cannot achieve sufficient power quality unless the number of cells is high enough). The present paper proposes a new concept which is based on designing arms with a single cell. This allows to have the simplest possible converter that maintains the structure of an MMC. While all the inner controllers of large-scale HVDC MMCs are included, the only remarkable difference is that PWM is used and NLM cannot be implemented. As this is also a limitation for other low voltage MMC, the proposed concept is suggested... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cold climate, daylight, framework, human perception, light quality, methodology, mixed methods, phenomenology, qualitative research, residential buildings, visual comfort
In this conceptual article we propose a framework for describing the experience of delightful daylighting in Nordic homes and a method to correlate it with an existing quantitative daylighting assessment. In contrast to earlier research on daylighting, the present work gives priority to developing the methodology for researching the experience of the inhabitant in a real situation and relying the quantitative assessment on an existing method. In this way, we shift the focus of daylight studies from quantitative evaluations towards qualitative descriptions of the human experience of daylight. The framework enables future research that can broaden the way the experience of daylighting is described and to see if the quantitative assessment according to the standard EN 17037:2018 Daylighting in buildings correlates with these descriptions. Firstly, the current state of research on subjective daylight preferences and daylight assessment is reviewed. Secondly, a novel method, the long-term s... [more]

Keywords: interference alignment, limited feedback, MIMO, precoding matrix, smart grid, spatial multiplexing gain
Cellular communication provides an efficient, flexible, long-lived, and reliable communication technology for smart grids to improve the automated analysis, demand response, adoptive control, and coordination between the generator and consumers. With the expansion of wireless networks and the increase of access devices, interference has become a major problem that limits the performance of cellular wireless communication systems for smart grids. Spatial interference alignment (IA) is an effective method to eliminate interference and improve the capacity of wireless communication networks. This paper provides the sufficient conditions of spatial interference alignment operating with limited precoding matrix feedback for a K-user MIMO interference channel. Each receiver feeds the matrix index of the transmitting precoder back to the corresponding transmitter through an interference-free and error-free link. We calculated the number of feedback bits required to achieve the maximum theoret... [more]

Keywords: IEC, indirect evaporative cooler, M-cycle, Maisotsenko cycle
The indirect evaporative cooler (IEC) has excellent potential to replace or improve conventional vapor compression equipment in HVAC and refrigeration applications. This could be achieved by using the M-cycle (dew-point evaporative cooling technology). This thermodynamic concept makes it possible to derive a large amount of energy from the air stream (as latent heat released during water evaporation into the working air stream) and use it for another air stream (product). Its application has also spread to other sectors, such as water desalination and distillation, power plants, or NOx reduction. This paper provides an overview of the M-cycle mainly in air conditioning (MAC, D-MAC, H-MAC) and refrigeration (MCT, M-condenser). Various integrated solutions are described, showing improved effectiveness in terms of the wet-bulb temperature and the dew point. The design features of consolidated solutions are better In terms of the flow distribution, geometry, or volume. Most of the improvem... [more]

March 2, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 3D printing, compaction, density, porosity, rock, sand
The geomechanical and transport properties of rocks are of great importance to geoscience and engineering, as these properties provide responses to external stresses and flow regimes in the subsurface. Typically, experiments conducted on cores from reservoir formations have a degree of uncertainty, due to the heterogeneous characteristics of rock samples. To combat this uncertainty, binder-jet additive manufacturing (3D printing) is an emerging technology to characterize natural porous media in a repeatable fashion. In this study, the 3D printing sandstone analogue involved sand powder and organic binder to mimic silica grains and cement in natural sandstone. The use of compaction rollers and the adjustment of printing parameters allowed one to test how the porosity and strength of 3D-printed samples can replicate the transport and geomechanical properties of natural sandstone. The densities of samples were increased by ~15% and compressive strength by ~65% with the use of the larger r... [more]

Keywords: clothing classifier, CNN models, connected thermostat, thermal comfort
Thermal comfort is associated with clothing insulation, conveying a level of satisfaction with the thermal surroundings. Besides, clothing insulation is commonly associated with indoor thermal comfort. However, clothing classification in smart homes might save energy when the end-user wears appropriate clothes to save energy and obtain thermal comfort. Furthermore, object detection and classification through Convolutional Neural Networks has increased over the last decade. There are real-time clothing garment classifiers, but these are oriented towards single garment recognition for texture, fabric, shape, or style. Consequently, this paper proposes a CNN model classification for the implementation of these classifiers on cameras. First, the Fashion MNIST was analyzed and compared with the VGG16, Inceptionvv4, TinyYOLOv3, and ResNet18 classification algorithms to determine the best clo classifier. Then, for real-time analysis, a new dataset with 12,000 images was created and analyzed w... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: capping agent, carbon nanotube, dispersant, electrode, manganese oxide, supercapacitor, synthesis
The purpose of this investigation was the development of a new colloidal route for the fabrication of Mn3O4 electrodes for supercapacitors with enhanced charge storage performance. Mn3O4-carbon nanotube electrodes were fabricated with record-high capacitances of 6.67 F cm−2 obtained from cyclic voltammetry tests at a scan rate of 2 mV s−1 and 7.55 F cm−2 obtained from the galvanostatic charge−discharge tests at a current density of 3 mA cm−2 in 0.5 M Na2SO4 electrolyte in a potential window of 0.9 V. The approach involves the use of murexide as a capping agent for the synthesis of Mn3O4 and a co-dispersant for Mn3O4 and carbon nanotubes. Good electrochemical performance of the electrode material was achieved at a high active mass loading of 40 mg cm−2 and was linked to a reduced agglomeration of Mn3O4 nanoparticles and efficient co-dispersion of Mn3O4 with carbon nanotubes. The mechanisms of murexide adsorption on Mn3O4 and carbon nanotube are discussed. With the proposed method, the t... [more]
PF2RM: A Power Fault Retrieval and Recommendation Model Based on Knowledge Graph

Keywords: fault research and judgment, knowledge graph, search recommendation, smart grid
Energy saving and emission reduction have become common concerns in countries around the world. In China, with the implementation of the new strategy of “carbon peak and neutrality” and the rapid development of the new smart grid infrastructure, the amount of data of actual power grid dispatching and fault analysis show exponential growth, which has led to phenomena such as poor supervision effectiveness and difficulty in handling faults in the process of grid operation and maintenance. Existing research on retrieval recommendation methods has had a lower accuracy rate at cold-start due to a small sample of user interactions. In addition, the cumulative learning of user personalization during general retrieval results in a poor perception of potential interest. By constructing a power knowledge graph, this paper presents a power fault retrieval and recommendation model (PF2RM) based on user-polymorphic perception. This model includes two methods: the power fault retrieval method (PFR)... [more]

Keywords: blasting excavation, damage classification, damage degree, Hoek–Brown criterion, slope
To study the effects of declining mechanical parameters caused by blasting excavation on slopes, we introduced the damage degree index Ds, and established a relationship between Ds and the disturbance factor D in the Hoek−Brown criterion, along with a basic quality index BQ for the rock mass. We then explored the change law for the degree of rock damage Ds as a function of the disturbance factor D. We also used a phosphate mine slope in Guizhou Province for reference, and analyzed the process of damage evolution of the slope based on the RHT (Riedel-Hiermaier-Thoma Constitution) in LS-DYNA (Yunnan, China). Results showed a direct relationship between the GSI value in the Hoek−Brown criterion and the initial damage degree of the slope. As Ds increases, D increases exponentially. However, the compressive strength, elastic modulus, cohesion, and internal friction angle decreased nonlinearly, and the tensile strength of the rock mass decreased linearly. Among these parameters, the compress... [more]

Keywords: compressibility factor, MLFN, Natural Gas, neural network, PVT
Simulating the phase behavior of a reservoir fluid requires the determination of many parameters, such as gas−oil ratio and formation volume factor. The determination of such parameters requires knowledge of the critical properties and compressibility factor (Z factor). There are many techniques to determine the compressibility factor, such as experimental pressure, volume, and temperature (PVT) tests, empirical correlations, and artificial intelligence approaches. In this work, two different models based on statistical regression and multi-layer-feedforward neural network (MLFN) were developed to predict the Z factor of natural gas by utilizing the experimental data of 1079 samples with a wide range of pseudo-reduced pressure (0.12−25.8) and pseudo reduced temperature (1.3−2.4). The statistical regression model was proposed and trained in R using the “rjags” package and Markov chain Monte Carlo simulation, while the multi-layer-feedforward neural network model was postulated and train...
