En-Jui Liu, Yi-Hsuan Hung, Che-Wun Hong.
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: metaheuristic optimization algorithm, particle swarm algorithm, photovoltaic cell, proton exchange membrane fuel cell.
As carriers of green energy, proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) and photovoltaic (PV) cells are complex and nonlinear multivariate systems. For simulation analysis, optimization control, efficacy prediction, and fault diagnosis, it is crucial to rapidly and accurately establish reliability modules and extract parameters from the system modules. This study employed three types of particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithms to find the optimal parameters of two energy models by minimizing the sum squared errors (SSE) and roots mean squared errors (RMSE). The three algorithms are inertia weight PSO, constriction PSO, and momentum PSO. The obtained calculation results of these three algorithms were compared with those obtained using algorithms from other relevant studies. This study revealed that the use of momentum PSO enables rapid convergence (under 30 convergence times) and the most accurate modeling and yields the most stable parameter extraction (SSE of PEMFC is 2.0656, RM... April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: “in situ” assessment, gulf of California, Midriff archipelago, modeling of tidal energy flows.
The Gulf of California has many regions of potential tidal-stream energy that have been identified and characterized using in-situ measurements and numerical ocean models. The Midriff Islands region has received particular attention due to its increased current speeds and high kinetic energy. This increase in energy can be seen in the formation of internal wave packets propagating for several hundred kilometers. Here we present a brief description of internal wave measurements travel towards the Northern Gulf and explore energy generation sites. In this paper we characterize the tidal inflow and outflow that passes throughout the Midriff Islands in the central part of the Gulf. We use a three-dimensional numerical ocean model that adequately reproduces the tidal flow and the increase in speed and kinetic energy between the islands. The current flow structure shows the highest velocity cores near the shore and far from the bottom. During the rising tide, the maximum current flow (~0.6 m... [more]
Control Configurations for Reactive Power Compensation at the Secondary Side of the Low Voltage Substation by Using Hybrid Transformer
Mohammed Radi, Mohamed Darwish, Gareth Taylor, Ioana Pisica.
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hybrid distribution transformer (HT), low voltage (LV) substation, reactive power (RP) compensation, voltage regulation.
The high penetration of new device technologies, such as Electric Vehicles (EV), and Distributed Generation (DG) in Distribution Networks (DNs) has risen new consumption requirements. In this context, it becomes crucial to implement a flexible, functional and fast responsive management of the voltage level and Reactive Power (RP) in the DN. The latest improvements in the Solid State Switches (SSS) field demonstrate they can be used as a Power Electronic (PE) converter. In particular, they have been shown to be capable of operating synchronously with transformers, making the Hybrid Distribution Transformer (HT) concept a potential and cost-effective solution to various DN control issues. In this paper, a HT-based approach consisting of augmenting the conventional Low Voltage (LV) transformer with a fractionally rated PE converter for regulating and controlling the RP in the last mile of the DN is proposed. In this way, it is expected to meet the demand of the future DN from an efficienc... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: co-simulation, dynamic model, performance analysis, pure electric loader.
The electrification of loader designs can utilise several power motor types. Hence, this study investigates the operational performance of pure electric-powered loaders matched with three types of motors. Firstly, for the ZL08 loader, it is proposed that a pure electric-powered loader structure adopts two motors to drive the walking and hydraulic systems separately. Secondly, the dynamic parameters of the two motors were matched, and then, a joint vehicle dynamics model of the control system, the Multi-Body Dynamics (MBD) module and the material Discrete Element Method (DEM) module, was established. Finally, the performance of the walking system with three motors was tested by inserting three materials and using accelerating and climbing methods. The operating performance of the hydraulic system was tested by shovelling and unloading three materials. Results show that when inserting difficult materials, the loader’s walking system with switched reluctance motors is 9.74−21.2% deeper th... [more]
The Silent Path: The Development of the Single Sleeve Valve Two-Stroke Engine over the Last 110 Years
Robert Head, James Turner.
April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: patents, sleeve valves, two-stroke.
At the beginning of the 20th century the operational issues of the Otto engine had not been fully resolved. The work presented here seeks to chronicle the development of one of the alternative design pathways, namely the replacement for the gas exchange mechanism of the more conventional poppet valve arrangement with that of a sleeve valve. There have been several successful engines built with these devices, which have a number of attractive features superior to poppet valves. This review moves from the initial work of Charles Knight, Peter Burt, and James McCollum, in the first decade of the 20th century, through the work of others to develop a two-stroke version of the sleeve-valve engine, which climaxed in the construction of one of the most powerful piston aeroengines ever built, the Rolls-Royce Crecy. After that period of high activity in the 1940s, there have been limited further developments. The patent efforts changed over time from design of two-stroke sleeve-drive mechanisms... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: composite material, metal loss defect, pipeline, repair system.
Pipe corrosion is a frequent phenomenon, and if repairs are delayed it could lead to environmental damage. Drilling activities can expand only when sufficient surface transportation capacity for the produced fluids exists and thus good maintenance of the transportation system is important. Furthermore, the technology presented herein can be easily upgraded as a repair solution for surface casing section below the casing head, which have been repeatedly reported as being highly corroded for older wells. This paper presents the results of the research work carried out by the authors in order to evaluate the design methods of the modern composite material systems used to repair steel pipes carrying hydrocarbons upon which local metal loss defects (generated by corrosion and/or erosion processes) have been detected. The pipe repair technologies consisting of the application of composite material wraps (made of a polymeric matrix and reinforcing fabric) are perceived as being advantageous a... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: “postage stamp” method, electricity market, fixed cost allocation, incremental power flow method, power flow decomposition, power flow tracing method, proportional sharing principle, superposition principle, transmission pricing.
The core objective of transmission tariffs is the recovery of costs related to the transport of electricity. A usual component of a tariff is a fixed charge that covers the costs of the network infrastructure. As many customers use the power grid, the rate of this charge should reflect, as closely as possible, the actual costs of supplying energy to the individual consumers. These costs result from which network elements have been used in delivering the electricity, and to what extent these elements have been used. Therefore, the fixed transmission rates should depend on the degree of network utilization. This article investigates definitions of the degree of network utilization based on the active power flow. To calculate the degree of network utilization, the flow of electricity on a branch must be decomposed into the streams flowing to individual customers. For this decomposition, two methods are examined: a power flow tracing method, based on the proportional sharing principle, and... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: film cooling, heat transfer, JICF, RANS, RSM model, stereo PIV.
The aerodynamic and thermal behaviour of multiperforated zones in combustors is essential to the development of future combustion chambers. Detailed databases are therefore crucial for the validation of RANS/LES solvers, but also regarding the derivation of heat transfer correlations used in 0D/1D in-house codes developed by engine manufacturers. In the framework of FP7 EU SOPRANO Program, the test-rig used in a previous study is modified to be compatible with anisothermal conditions. The plate studied is a 12:1 model with a 90∘ compound angle injection. A heating system is used to generate a moderate temperature gradient of about 20 K between the secondary hot flow and the main cold flow. The aerodynamic field is acquired by a PIV 2D-3C (Stereo Particle Image Velocimetry) system. The surface heat transfer coefficient is derived based on surface temperature distribution acquisitions. Several heating power levels are tested, which allows evaluating the convective heat transfer coefficie... [more]

Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: bioelectricity generation, external resistance, microbial fuel cell.
In this work, the effect of the external load on the current and power generation, as well as on the pollutant removal by microbial fuel cells (MFCs), has been studied by step-wise modifying the external load. The load changes included a direct scan, in which the external resistance was increased from 120 Ω to 3300 Ω, and a subsequent reverse scan, in which the external resistance was decreased back to 120 Ω. The reduction in the current, experienced when increasing the external resistance, was maintained even in the reverse scan when the external resistance was step-wise decreased. Regarding the power exerted, when the external resistance was increased below the value of the internal resistance, an enhancement in the power exerted was observed. However, when operating near the value of the internal resistance, a stable power exerted of about 1.6 µW was reached. These current and power responses can be explained by the change in population distribution, which shifts to a more fermentat... [more]
GLSDC Based Parameter Estimation Algorithm for a PMSM Model

Subject: Other
Keywords: GLSDC, parameter estimation, PMSM.
In this study, a GLSDC (Gaussian Least Squares Differential Correction) based parameter estimation algorithm is used to identify a PMSM (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) model. In this method, a nonlinear model is assumed to be the correct representation of the underlying state dynamics and the output signals are assumed to be measured in a noisy environment. Using noisy input and output signals, parameters that constitute the coefficients of the nonlinear state and input signal terms are to be estimated using the state transition matrix which is computed by the numerical means that are detailed. Since a GLSDC algorithm requires correct initial state value, this term is also estimated in addition to the unknown coefficients whose bounds are assumed to be known, which is mostly the case in the industrial applications. The batch input and output signals are used to iteratively estimate the parameter set before and after the convergence, and to recover the filtered state trajectories.... [more]
A Study on Core Skew Considering Manufacturability of Double-Layer Spoke-Type PMSM

Subject: Other
Keywords: cogging torque, spoke type PMSM, THD, torque ripple.
The spoke-type permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), which is a general ferrite magnetic flux-concentrated motor, has a low portion of reluctance torque at the total torque magnitude. Therefore, as a way to increase the reluctance torque, there is a double-layer spoke-type PMSM that can maximize the difference in inductance between the d-axis and the q-axis. However, in the double-layer spoke-type PMSM, cogging torque, torque ripple, and total harmonic distortion (THD) increase with reluctance torque, which is the main cause of vibration and noise. In this paper, a method is proposed that provides the same effect as skew without dividing stages of the permanent magnet by dividing the core of the rotor into two types so that it is easy to manufacture according to the number of stages, unlike extant skew methods. Based on the method, the reduction in cogging torque and THD was verified by finite element analysis (FEA).

Propylene is one of the world’s most important basic olefin raw material used in the production of a vast array of polymers and other chemicals. The need for high purity grade of propylene is essential and traditionally achieved by the very energy-intensive cryogenic separation. In this study, a pillared inorganic anion SIF62− was used as a highly selective C3H4 due to the square grid pyrazine-based structure. Single gas adsorption revealed a very high C3H4 uptake value (3.32, 3.12, 2.97 and 2.43 mmol·g−1 at 300, 320, 340 and 360 K, respectively). The values for propylene for the same temperatures were 2.73, 2.64, 2.31 and 1.84 mmol·g−1, respectively. Experimental results were obtained for the two gases fitted using Langmuir and Toth models. The former had a varied degree of representation of the system with a better presentation of the adsorption of the propylene compared to the propyne system. The Toth model regression offered a better fit of the experimental data over the entire ran... [more]

Keywords: electrical vehicle, interleaved PFC converter, onboard charger (OBC), totem-pole bridgeless boost converter, wide power range.
This paper presents a modified power factor correction (PFC) ON/OFF control and three-dimensional (3D) printed circuit board (PCB) design for a high-efficiency and high-power density onboard charger (OBC). By alternately operating one of two boost modules of the PFC stage at a 50% or less load condition, the proposed PFC control can reduce the load-independent power loss of the PFC stage, such as core loss and capacitor charging loss of switches. It enables OBCs to have high efficiency across a wide output power range and better thermal performance. The 3D-PCB design decouples a trade-off relationship of the PCB trace design and heat spreader design, increasing the power density of OBCs. A 3.3 kW prototype composed of an interleaved totem-pole bridgeless boost PFC converter and full-bridge (FB) LLC converter has been built and tested to verify the proposed PFC control and 3D-PCB effectiveness design. The prototype has 95.7% full power efficiency (98.2% PFC stage efficiency) and 52 W/in... [more]

April 13, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: lock-in amplifier, Rotatory Reference Frame (RRF), Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), single-phase grid connected inverters.
The power quality of grid-connected inverters (GCIs) is attracting a lot of attention as the number of distributed generation systems with renewable energy sources are increased. It is well known that the harmonics present in the grid have a lot of detrimental effects on the equipment and devices connected to a power system network such as heating and derating. These effects lead to problems in terms of safety and lifespan. Therefore, harmonic standards such as IEEE 519 and P1547 suggest that GCIs should achieve total harmonic distortion (THD) of the output current that is less than 5%. However, it is not easy to achieve the current THD of GCIs that is less than 5% with only an output filter under distorted grid conditions. In this paper, a harmonic compensation method using a lock-in amplifier (LIA) is proposed. Due to the outstanding performance of the LIA, accurate information of the harmonics can be obtained. This information is used to eliminate the harmonics by the simple PI cont... [more]

Keywords: advanced compression ignition (ACI), knock, low temperature heat release (LTHR), multimode, octane index (OI), octane sensitivity, partial fuel stratification (PFS), spark assisted compression ignition (SACI).
Modern boosted spark-ignition (SI) engines and emerging advanced compression ignition (ACI) engines operate under conditions that deviate substantially from the conditions of conventional autoignition metrics, namely the research and motor octane numbers (RON and MON). The octane index (OI) is an emerging autoignition metric based on RON and MON which was developed to better describe fuel knock resistance over a broader range of engine conditions. Prior research at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) identified that OI performs reasonably well under stoichiometric boosted conditions, but inconsistencies exist in the ability of OI to predict autoignition behavior under ACI strategies. Instead, the autoignition behavior under ACI operation was found to correlate more closely to fuel composition, suggesting fuel chemistry differences that are insensitive to the conditions of the RON and MON tests may become the dominant factor under these high efficiency operating conditions. This invest... [more]

Keywords: blockchain, decentralised P2P model, edge computing, security, smart grid, state channel, STRIDE.
Current Peer-to-Peer (P2P) energy market models raise serious concerns regarding the confidentiality and integrity of energy consumption, trading and billing data. While Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) systems (e.g., blockchain) have been proposed to enhance security, an attacker could damage other parts of the model, such as its infrastructure: an adversarial attacker could target the communication between entities by, e.g., eavesdropping or modifying data. The main goal of this paper is to propose a model for a decentralised P2P marketplace for trading energy, which addresses the problem of developing security and privacy-aware environments. Additionally, a Multi-Agent System (MAS) architecture is presented with a focus on security and sustainability. In order to propose a solution to DLT’s scalability issues (i.e., through transaction confirmation delays), off-chain state channels are considered for the energy negotiation and resolution processes. Additionally, a STRIDE (spoofin... [more]

Keywords: CKC hypothesis, convergence, dynamic benchmark, LCE tool, PCCEs.
As the most basic unit of the national economy and administrative management, the low-carbon transformation of the vast counties is of great significance to China’s overall greenhouse gas emission reduction. Although the low-carbon evaluation (LCE) indicator system and benchmarks have been extensively studied, most benchmarks ignore the needs of the evaluated object at the development stage. When the local economy develops to a certain level, it may be restricted by static low-carbon target constraints. This study reviews the relevant research on LCE indicator system and benchmarks based on convergence. The Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC), a dynamic benchmark system for per capita carbon emissions (PCCEs), is proposed for low-carbon counties. Taking Changxing County, Zhejiang Province, China as an example, a dynamic benchmark for PCCEs was established by benchmarking the Carbon Kuznets Curve (CKC) of best practices. Based on the principles of best practice, comparability, data comple... [more]

Keywords: engine deposits, Ethanol, fuel, tests.
An increasing percentage of ethanol in fuel leads to significant changes in polarity and solubility, which makes conventional gasoline deposit control additives (DCAs) difficult to dissolve in ethanol fuels, resulting in the formation of deposits on engine elements. Critical areas of deposit formation in an engine are constituted by inlet valves, combustion chambers, and fuel injectors. As a consequence, operational parameters of the engine are disturbed to a large extent by the total effect of the deposits. To prevent the aforementioned phenomena, in the operation of engines fueled with ethanol-containing blends, it is necessary to use specifically prepared DCAs. The paper briefly presents a process of development of DCAs dedicated to high-ethanol fuels. Each of the prepared DCA formulations contained a substance having detergent-emulsifying properties (referred to in the text as DEM), a carrier oil, and a solvent. The composition and ratios of components used in the DCA, by testing t... [more]

Keywords: battery energy storage system, demand response, hybrid method operation, multi-agent guiding particle swarm optimization, multi-agent system, non-cooperative game theory.
Owing to the increases of energy loads and penetration of renewable energy with variability, it is essential to determine the optimum capacity of the battery energy storage system (BESS) and demand response (DR) within the microgrid (MG). To accomplish the foregoing, this paper proposes an optimal MG operation approach with a hybrid method considering the game theory for a multi-agent system. The hybrid method operation includes both BESS and DR methods. The former is presented to reduce the sum of the MG operation and BESS costs using the game theory, resulting in the optimal capacity of BESS. Similarly, the DR method determines the optimal DR capacity based on the trade-off between the incentive value and capacity. To improve optimization operation, multi-agent guiding particle swarm optimization (MAG-PSO) is implemented by adjusting the best global position and position vector. The results demonstrate that the proposed approach not only affords the most economical decision among age... [more]

Keywords: condition assessment, incipient fault, predictive maintenance, unsupervised learning, wound-rotor induction generator.
Accurate online diagnosis of incipient faults and condition assessment on generators is especially challenging to automate through supervised learning techniques, because of data imbalance. Fault-condition training and test data are either not available or are experimentally emulated, and therefore do not precisely account for all the eventualities and nuances of practical operating conditions. Thus, it would be more convenient to harness the ability of unsupervised learning in these applications. An investigation into the use of unsupervised learning as a means of recognizing incipient fault patterns and assessing the condition of a wound-rotor induction generator is presented. High-dimension clustering is performed using stator and rotor current and voltage signatures measured under healthy and varying fault conditions on an experimental wound-rotor induction generator.
