The Relationship between Economic Growth and Pollution in Some New European Union Member States: A Dynamic Panel ARDL Approach
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: economic growth, EKC, energy consumption, GHG emissions, RKC
Considering the necessity of achieving economic development by keeping the quality of the environment, the aim of this paper is to study the impact of economic growth on GHG emissions in a sample of Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries (V4 countries, Bulgaria and Romania) in the period of 1996−2019. In the context of dynamic ARDL panel and environmental Kuznets curve (EKC), the relationship between GHG and GDP is N-shaped. A U-shaped relationship was obtained in the renewable Kuznets curve (RKC). Energy consumption, domestic credit to the private sector, and labor productivity contribute to pollution, while renewable energy consumption reduces the GHG emissions. However, more efforts are required for promoting renewable energy in the analyzed countries.

Implementing Radical Innovation in Renewable Energy Experience Curves
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: experience curve, forecasting, innovation, learning investment, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, Wave Energy
Cost reductions in nascent forms of Renewable Energy Technology (RET) are essential for them to contribute to the energy mix. Policy intervention can facilitate this cost reduction; however, this may require a significant investment from the public sector. These cost reductions fall into two broad categories: (1) incremental cost reductions through continual improvements to existing technologies, and (2) radical innovation where technologies that significantly differ from the incumbents are developed. This study presents a modelling methodology to integrate radical innovation in RET experience curve and learning investment analysis, using wave energy as an example nascent RET. This aims to quantify the potential effects of radical innovation on the learning investment, allowing the value of successful innovation to be better analysed. The study highlights the value offered by radical innovations in long-term deployment scenarios for wave energy. This suggests that high-risk R&D efforts... [more]

Spray, Combustion, and Air Pollutant Characteristics of JP-5 for Naval Aircraft from Experimental Single-Cylinder CRDI Diesel Engine
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: air pollutant, combustion, fuel injection timing, JP-5, spray, visualization
This study was performed to analyze the spray, combustion, and air pollutant characteristic of JP-5 fuel for naval aircraft in a spray visualization system and a single-cylinder CRDI diesel engine that can be visualized. The analysis results of JP-5 fuel were compared with DF. The spray tip penetration of JP-5 showed diminished results as the spray developed. JP-5 had the highest ROHR and ROPR regardless of the fuel injection timings. The physicochemical characteristics of JP-5, such as its excellent vaporization and low cetane number, were analyzed to prolong the ignition delay. Overall, the longer combustion period and the lower heat loss of the DF raised the engine torque and the IMEP. JP-5 showed higher O2 and lower CO2 levels than the DF fuel. The CO emission level increased as the injection timing was advanced in two test fuels, and the CO emitted from the DF fuel, which has a longer combustion period than JP-5, turned out to be lower. NOx also reduced as the fuel injection timin... [more]

Mercury Speciation in Various Coals Based on Sequential Chemical Extraction and Thermal Analysis Methods
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: coal rank, distribution of Hg speciation, thermal release
Coal combustion is an anthropogenic source of mercury (Hg) emissions to the atmosphere. The strong toxicity and bioaccumulation potential have prompted attention to the control of mercury emissions. Pyrolysis has been regarded as an efficient Hg removal technology before coal combustion and other utilization processes. In this work, the Hg speciation in coal and its thermal stability were investigated by combined sequential chemical extraction and temperature programmed decomposition methods; the effect of coal rank on Hg speciation distribution and Hg release characteristics were clarified based on the weight loss of coal; the amount of Hg released; and the emission of sulfur-containing gases during coal pyrolysis. Five species of mercury were determined in this study: exchangeable Hg (F1), carbonate + sulfate + oxide bound Hg (F2), silicate + aluminosilicate bound Hg (F3), sulfide bound Hg (F4), and residual Hg (F5), which are quite distinct in different rank coals. Generally, Hg enr... [more]

The Issues of the Air-Fuel Ratio in Exhaust Emissions Tests Carried out on a Chassis Dynamometer
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: emissions regulations, pollutant emissions, real driving emissions
Vehicle exhaust emission tests use exhaust sampling systems that dilute the exhaust gas with ambient air. The dilution factor DF is calculated assuming that the combustion is complete, and that the engine is operated at a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio (AFR). These assumptions are not always met. This is especially true for diesel engines. This article discusses the tests to find out what the average lambda (λ) over the ARTEMIS, WLTC and NEDC driving cycles is and how this affects the result of the emission measurements. Measurements were carried out on a chassis dynamometer equipped with a standard emission measurement system used during the homologation. The λ was calculated using the Brettschneider equation. The dilution ratio DR was also determined by measuring the CO2 concentration in the raw exhaust gas. The CO2-tracer method used for this was modified. The median of the λ for a CI vehicle was 1.23−3.31, which makes the relative percentage difference between the DF and DR (ΔDF) in... [more]

April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: ANSYS coupled analysis, current path, design methods, FEM, low voltage circuit breaker, modeling and simulation, transient thermal analysis
The finite element analysis (FEA) is an essential and powerful numerical method that can explicitly optimize the design process of electrical devices. In this paper, the employment of the finite element method (FEM) as ANSYS is proposed in order to aid electrical apparatus engineering and modeling of low voltage modular circuit breakers. The procured detailed model of a miniature circuit breaker (MCB) was undergoing transient thermal simulations of the current path. Acquired data were juxtapositioned with experimental data procured in the laboratory. The reflection of the simulation approach was clearly noted in the experimental results. Mutual areas of the modeled element expressed similar physical properties and robustness errors while tested in the specific conditions—faithfully reflecting those that were experimented with. Moreover, the physical phenomena essential for electrical engineering could be determined on the model stage. These types of 3D models can be used to analyze the... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy management strategy, hybrid energy storage system, slope information
To maximize the performance of power batteries and supercapacitors in a hybrid energy storage system (HESS) and to resolve the conflict between the high power demands of electric vehicles and the limitations of high-current charging and discharging of the power battery, a vehicle power demand model incorporating road slope information has been constructed. This paper takes a HESS composed of power battery and supercapacitor as the object, and a rule-based energy management strategy (EMS) based on road slope information is proposed to realize the reasonable distribution and management of energy under the slope condition. According to the slope information of the road ahead, the energy consumption in the next period was predicted, and the supercapacitor is charged and discharged in advance to meet the energy demand of uphill and the energy recovery capacity of downhill to avoid the high current charge and discharge of the battery. Subsequently, the improved EMS performance was simulated... [more]

Enclosure Design for Brake Wear Particle Measurement Using Computational Fluid Dynamics
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: brake dust particles, brake dynamometer, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), enclosure, Lagrangian multiphase model
The harmfulness of fine dust generated by automobile brakes to the environment has recently received attention. Therefore, we aimed to analyze and regulate the brake wear particles in dynamometers. To accurately measure the number of particles and particle mass, the sampling system used needs to minimize transportation losses and reduce the residence time in the brake enclosure system. The brake dust measurement system currently used can estimate the main transportation loss but cannot evaluate the complex flow field in the brake enclosure system under different design conditions. We used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology to predict the behavior of brake wear particles and analyze the static pressure characteristics, the uniformity of the system flow, and the residence time of the brake dust particles in the system. In addition, we compared the design of the basic structure of the brake enclosure system, combined with the four factors affecting the design of the brake dynam... [more]

Current Status, Scenario, and Prospective of Renewable Energy in Algeria: A Review
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Energy demand has been overgrowing in developing countries. Moreover, the fluctuation of fuel prices is a primary concern faced by many countries that highly rely on conventional power generation to meet the load demand. Hence, the need to use alternative resources, such as renewable energy, is crucial in order to mitigate fossil fuel dependency, while ensuring reductions in carbon dioxide emissions. Algeria—being the largest county in Africa—has experienced a rapid growth in energy demand over the past decade due to the significant increase in residential, commercial, and industry sectors. Currently, the hydrocarbon-rich nation is highly dependent on fossil fuels for electricity generation, with renewable energy only having a small contribution to the country’s energy mix. However, the country has massive potential for renewable energy generation, such as solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, and hydropower. Therefore, the government aims to diversify away from fossil fuels and promote re... [more]

Identification of Stray Gassing of Dodecylbenzene in Bushings
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: bushings, DGA, dissolved gas analysis, dodecylbenzene insulating oils, stray gassing
Several high voltage condenser type OIP (oil impregnated paper) bushings used in the electrical industry are filled with dodecylbenzene, because of its ability to absorb hydrogen formed by corona partial discharges in the thick paper insulation of these pieces of equipment. Some of them form large quantities of ethane, raising the concern of overheating faults in their paper insulation, which may be risky for their safe operation in service. The article presents dissolved gas analysis results of oil samples taken from the bushings with high ethane formation, together with results of laboratory tests of stray gassing of dodecylbenzene performed according to CIGRE procedure. By using Duval Pentagon 2 it is possible to compare patterns in the laboratory and in bushings and evaluate the temperature range of possible defects. Stray gassing/overheating of dodecylbenzene in bushings within the stray gassing temperature range and whatever the possible other causes, is not a concern for their s... [more]

A Finite Mixture GARCH Approach with EM Algorithm for Energy Forecasting Applications
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: electricity price, EM algorithm, finite mixture, forecasting, GARCH, wind energy, wind speed
Enhancing forecasting performance in terms of both the expected mean value and variance has been a critical challenging issue for energy industry. In this paper, the novel methodology of finite mixture Generalized AutoRegressive Conditional Heteroskedasticity (GARCH) approach with Expectation−Maximization (EM) algorithm is introduced. The applicability of this methodology is comprehensively evaluated for the forecasting of energy related time series including wind speed, wind power generation, and electricity price. Its forecasting performances are evaluated by various criteria, and also compared with those of the conventional AutoRegressive Moving-Average (ARMA) model and the less conventional ARMA-GARCH model. It is found that the proposed mixture GARCH model outperforms the other two models in terms of volatility modeling for all the energy related time series considered. This is proven to be statistically significant because the p-values of likelihood ratio test are less than 0.000... [more]

Gaussian Copula Methodology to Model Photovoltaic Generation Uncertainty Correlation in Power Distribution Networks
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: correlated PV, Gaussian copula, Monte Carlo simulation, photovoltaic systems, probabilistic load flow, stochastic dependence, uncertainty quantification
Deterministic load flow analyses of power grids do not include the uncertain factors that affect the network elements; hence, their predictions can be very unreliable for distribution system operators and for the decision makers who deal with the expansion planning of the power network. Adding uncertain probability parameters in the deterministic load flow is vital to capture the wide variability of the currents and voltages. This is achieved by probabilistic load flow studies. Photovoltaic systems represent a remarkable source of uncertainty in the distribution network. In this study, we used a Gaussian copula to model the uncertainty in correlated photovoltaic generators. Correlations among photovoltaic generators were also included by exploiting the Gaussian copula technique. The large sets of samples generated with a statistical method (Gaussian copula) were used as the inputs for Monte Carlo simulations. The proposed methodologies were tested on two different networks, i.e., the 1... [more]

Stability Enhancement of a Single-Stage Transonic Axial Compressor Using Inclined Oblique Slots
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: axial compressor, Genetic Algorithm, inclined oblique slots, Optimization, RANS analysis, stall margin
A casing treatment using inclined oblique slots (INOS) is proposed to improve the stability of the single-stage transonic axial compressor, NASA Stage 37, during operation. The slots are installed on the casing of the rotor blades. The aerodynamic performance was estimated using three-dimensional steady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes analysis. The results showed that the slots effectively increased the stall margin of the compressor with slight reductions in the pressure ratio and adiabatic efficiency. Three geometric parameters were tested in a parametric study. A single-objective optimization to maximize the stall margin was carried out using a Genetic Algorithm coupled with a surrogate model created by a radial basis neural network. The optimized design increased the stall margin by 37.1% compared to that of the smooth casing with little impacts on the efficiency and pressure ratio.

Numerical Damping Calibration Study of Particle Element Method-Based Dynamic Relaxation Approach for Modeling Longwall Top-Coal Caving
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: dynamic relaxation approach (DRA), numerical damping, particle element method, top-coal caving
When using the explicit dynamic relaxation approach (DRA) to model the quasi-static rock breakage, fragmentation, and flow problems, especially the top-coal caving question, introducing numerical damping into the solution equation is inevitable for reducing the vibration frequency and impact speed of mesh nodes, which is significantly affect the fidelity of the computation results. Although the DRA has been widely adopted to simulate top-coal caving, the reasonable value and calibration method of numerical damping are still open issues. In this study, the calibration process of reasonable numerical damping for modeling top-coal caving is investigated by comparing with the experimental results, in which several geometry parameters of the drawing funnel are selected as the calibration indexes. The result shows that the most reasonable numerical damping value is 0.07 for the numerical modeling of interval top-coal caving in extra-thick coal seams. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: geothermal, modular heat pumps, urban energy
Krakow has an extensive district heating network, which is approximately 900 km long. It is the second largest city in terms of the number of inhabitants in Poland, resulting in a high demand for energy—for both heating and cooling. The district heating of the city is based on coal. The paper presents the conception of using the available renewable sources to integrate them into the city’s heating system, increasing the flexibility of the system and its decentralization. An innovative solution of the use of hybrid, modular heat pumps with power dependent on the needs of customers in a given location and combining them with geothermal waters and photovoltaics is presented. The potential of deep geothermal waters is based on two reservoirs built of carbonate rocks, namely Devonian and Upper Jurassic, which mainly consist of dolomite and limestone. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: business models, electric vehicles, electricity recharging infrastructure, equilibrium programming, Greek EV mobility 2030, private investments in infrastructure
It is widely accepted that the market uptake of electric vehicles is essential for the decarbonisation of transport. However, scaling up the roll out of electric vehicles (EV) is challenging considering the lack of charging infrastructure. The latter is, currently, developing in an uneven way across the EU countries. A charging infrastructure with wide coverage addresses range limitations but requires high investment with uncertain returns during the early years of deployment. The aim of this paper is to assess how different policy options affect EV penetration and the involvement of private sector in infrastructure deployment. We propose a mathematical programming model of the decision problem and the interaction between the actors of EV charging ecosystem and apply it to the case of Greece from the time period until 2030. Keywords: partial shading conditions (PSCs), photovoltaic (PV) module, power output loss, PV array configuration, shading
This paper presents an experimental investigation on photovoltaic array (PV array) power output affected by partial shading conditions (PSCs). An experiment setup of a PV array with a series configuration using 2 × 4 photovoltaic modules (PV modules) was built. The power output loss due to the shading effect on the first photovoltaic cells (PV cell) connected with bypass diodes of each photovoltaic module, installed in the PV array in the horizontal direction, was evaluated. Depending on the direction of the sun relative to the PV array configuration, the shading percentage was measured during the test and recorded the current and voltage of the PV array. The performance evaluation of the PV array configurations is referred to with respect to the values of maximum power voltage, the maximum power current, maximum power output, power output losses and fill factor (FF). The experimental results show that 44% shading of the first PV cells affects PV array power output loss by more than 80... [more]

Acid Treatment as a Way to Reduce Shale Rock Mechanical Strength and to Create a Material Prone to the Formation of Permanent Well Barrier
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: acid treatment, activation, caprock, permanent barrier, shale
Utilization of natural shale formations for the creation of annular barriers in oil and gas wells is currently discussed as a mean of simplifying cumbersome plugging and abandonment procedures. Shales that are likely to form annular barriers are shales with high content of swelling clays and relatively low content of cementation material (e.g., quartz, carbonates). Shales with large content of quartz and low content of swelling clays will be rather brittle and not easily deformable. In this paper we ask the question whether and to what extent it is possible to modify the mechanical properties of relatively brittle shales by chemically removing some cementation material. To answer this question, we have leached out carbonates from Pierre I shale matrix using hydrochloric acid and we have compared mechanical properties of shale before and after leaching. We have also followed leaching dynamics using X-ray tomography. The results show that removal of around 4−5 wt% of cementation material... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: converter, converter-driven stability, HVDC, impedance-based stability analysis, interactions, MMC, offshore, replica
Offshore wind farms are increasingly built in the North Sea and the number of HVDC systems transmitting the wind power to shore increases as well. To connect offshore wind farms to adjacent AC transmission systems, onshore and offshore modular multilevel converters transform the transmitted power from AC to DC and vice versa. Additionally, modern wind farms mainly use wind turbines connected to the offshore point of common coupling via voltage source converters. However, converters and their control systems can cause unwanted interactions, referred to as converter-driven stability problems. The resulting instabilities can be predicted by applying an impedance-based analysis in the frequency domain. Considering that the converter models and system data are often confidential and cannot be exchanged in real systems, this paper proposes an enhanced impedance measurement method suitable for black-box applications to investigate the interactions. Plug-in Hybrid Ecological Category in Real Driving Emissions
April 19, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: energy consumption, exhaust emission, real driving emissions test
Transportation, as one of the most growing industries, is problematic due to environmental pollution. A solution to reduce the environmental burden is stricter emission standards and homologation tests that correspond to the actual conditions of vehicle use. Another solution is the widespread introduction of hybrid vehicles—especially the plug-in type. Due to exhaust emission tests in RDE (real driving emissions) tests, it is possible to determine the real ecological aspects of these vehicles. The authors of this paper used RDE testing of the exhaust emissions of plug-in hybrid vehicles and on this basis evaluated various hybrid vehicles from an ecological point of view. An innovative solution proposed by the authors is to define classes of plug-in hybrid vehicles (classes from A to C) due to exhaust emissions. An innovative way is to determine the extreme results of exhaust gas emission within the range of acceptable scatter of the obtained results. By valuating vehicles, it will be p... [more]

Keywords: body heat, energy-harvester, micro-fabrication, thermoelectric, wearable device
Wearable sensors to monitor vital health are becoming increasingly popular both in our daily lives and in medical diagnostics. The human body being a huge source of thermal energy makes it interesting to harvest this energy to power such wearables. Thermoelectric devices are capable of converting the abundantly available body heat into useful electrical energy using the Seebeck effect. However, high thermal resistance between the skin and the device leads to low-temperature gradients (2−10 K), making it difficult to generate useful power by this device. This study focuses on the design optimization of the micro-thermoelectric generator for such low-temperature applications and investigates the role of structural geometries in enhancing the overall power output.
