Software-in-the-Loop Simulation of a Gas-Engine for the Design and Testing of a Wind Turbine Emulator

In order to investigate the grid integration of wind turbines (WT) of various scales and designs, a wind turbine emulator (WTE) is being built in Flensburg within the state-funded project GrinSH. The special feature of this WTE is the use of a large gas engine instead of an electric motor to emulate the behavior of a WT. In order to develop the controls of this innovative WTE and to design the upcoming test runs under safe conditions, a software in the loop model (SILM) was applied. This SILM contained a mathematical model of the wind turbine, mathematical models of the gas engine with an integrated controller, and a model of the generator and frequency converter unit, as well as a preventive modulator of the reference signal (PMRS). A Study of Fast Front Transients of an HVDC Mixed Transmission Line Exposed to Bipolar Lightning Strokes

Bipolar lightning strokes are associated with multiple polarity electrical discharge with no current intervals in between, making their behavior quite peculiar. This work presents a fast front analysis of a mixed high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission link, evaluating the factors that influence the line transients due to shielding failures and backflashovers (BFOs), considering both overvoltage and repeated polarity reversal at the cable sending terminal. Impact of Employing Hybrid Nanofluids as Heat Carrier Fluid on the Thermal Performance of a Borehole Heat Exchanger

In this numerical study, 4 types of hybrid nanofluid, including Ag-MgO/water, TiO2-Cu/water, Al2O3-CuO/water, and Fe3O4-multi-wall carbon nanotube/water, have been considered potential working fluid in a single U-tube borehole heat exchanger. The selected hybrid nanofluid is then analyzed by changing the volume fraction and the Reynolds number. Based on the numerical results, Ag-MgO/water hybrid nanofluid is chosen as the most favorable heat carrier fluid, among others, considering its superior effectiveness, minor pressure drop, and appropriate thermal resistance compared to the pure water. Within a broader national project aimed at the hybridization of a standard city car (the 998 cc Mitsubishi-derived gasoline engine of the Smart W451), our team tackled the problem of improving the supercharger performance and response. The originally conceived design innovation was that of eliminating the mechanical connection between the compressor and the turbine. In the course of the study, it turned out that it is also possible to modify both components to extract extra power from the engine and to use it to recharge the battery pack. This required a redesign of both compressor and turbine. First, the initial configuration was analyzed on the basis of the design data provided by the manufacturer. In this paper, the design of the terminal continuous-time sliding mode controller is presented. The influence of the external disturbances is considered. The robustness for the whole regulation process is obtained by adapting the time-varying sliding line. The representative point converges to the demand state in finite time due to the selected shape of the nonlinear switching curve. Absolute values of control signal, system velocity and both of these quantities are bounded from above and considered as system constraints. In order to evaluate the dynamical performance of the system, the settling time is selected as a quality index and it is minimized. The approach presented in this paper is particularly suited for systems in which one state (or a set of states) is the derivative of the other state (or a set of states). This makes it applicable to a wide range of electromechanical systems, in which the states are the position and velocity of the mechanical parts.

Experimental Study of Thermal Properties and Dynamic Viscosity of Graphene Oxide/Oil Nano-Lubricant

This experimental study was carried out based on the nanotechnology approach to enhance the efficacy of engine oil. Atomic and surface structures of graphene oxide (GO) nanoparticles were investigated by using a field emission scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffraction. The nano lubricant was produced by using a two-step method. The stability of nano lubricant was analyzed through dynamic light scattering. Various properties such as thermal conductivity, dynamic viscosity, flash point, cloud point and freezing point were investigated and the results were compared with the base oil (Oil- SAE-50). The results show that the thermal conductivity of nano lubricant was improved compared to the base fluid. This increase was correlated with progressing temperature. The dynamic viscosity was increased by variations in the volume fraction and reached its highest value of 36% compared to the base oil. Uncertainty Cost Functions in Climate-Dependent Controllable Loads in Commercial Environments

This article presents the development, simulation and validation of the uncertainty cost functions for a commercial building with climate-dependent controllable loads, located in Florida, USA. For its development, statistical data on the energy consumption of the building in 2016 were used, along with the deployment of kernel density estimator to characterize its probabilistic behavior. For validation of the uncertainty cost functions, the Monte-Carlo simulation method was used to make comparisons between the analytical results and the results obtained by the method. The cost functions found differential errors of less than 1%, compared to the Monte-Carlo simulation method. With this, there is an analytical approach to the uncertainty costs of the building that can be used in the development of optimal energy dispatches, as well as a complementary method for the probabilistic characterization of the stochastic behavior of agents in the electricity sector.

Optimal SoC Balancing Control for Lithium-Ion Battery Cells Connected in Series

The optimal state of charge (SoC) balancing control for series-connected lithium-ion battery cells is presented in this paper. A modified SoC balancing circuit for two adjacent cells, based on the principle of a bidirectional Cuk converter, is proposed. The optimal SoC balancing problem is established to minimize the SoC differences of cells and the energy loss subject to constraints of the normal SoC operating range, the balancing current, and current of cells. This optimization problem is solved using the sequential quadratic programming algorithm to determine the optimal duties of PWM signals applied to the SoC balancing circuits. The Influence of Engine Downsizing in Hybrid Powertrains on the Energy Flow Indicators under Actual Traffic Conditions

The development of internal combustion engines is currently based around the ideas of downsizing and rightsizing. These trends, however, are not very widespread in vehicles with hybrid drive systems. Nevertheless, the authors analyzed the performance indicators of hybrid drives in downsized vehicles. Two generations of a vehicle model, equipped with hybrid drive systems, were used in the analysis in which not only the design of the internal combustion engine was changed, but also other hybrid drive systems (including the transmission, electric motors and high-voltage batteries). The paper analyzes the energy flow in two hybrid vehicles of different generations during tests in real road driving conditions in accordance with the requirements of the RDE (real driving emissions) tests. The authors have confirmed that newer vehicle designs extend the vehicle range by 38% in the electric mode under the conditions of road traffic (68% in the urban conditions).
