October 26, 2019 (v1)
Keywords: analytic hierarchy process (AHP), Brown–Gibson model, Cameroon, multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM), optimal location, photovoltaic, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, RETScreen
Due to environmental and economic drawbacks of fossil fuels, global renewable energy (RE) capacity has increased significantly over the last decade. Solar photovoltaic (PV) is one of the fastest-growing RE technologies. Selecting an appropriate site is one of the most critical steps in utility-scale solar PV planning. This paper aims at proposing a rational multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approach based on the Brown−Gibson model for optimal site selection for utility-scale solar PV projects. The proposed model considers the project’s net present value (NPV) along with seven suitability factors and six critical (constraint) factors. The RETScreen software was applied in calculating the NPV, the simple payback period and the carbon emission savings of the project at each alternative site. The weights of the suitability factors were determined using the analytical hierarchy process. Applied to the case study of finding the best location for a 5 MW solar PV project in northern Camero... Keywords: Adsorption, Carbon Capture, cost, direct air capture, economic, model, polyethyleneimine, steam, temperature vacuum swing
Capturing CO2 directly from air is one of the options for mitigating the effects global climate change, and therefore determining its cost is of great interest. A process model was proposed and validated using laboratory results for adsorption/desorption of CO2, with a branched polyethyleneimine (PEI) loaded mesocellular foam (MCF) silica sorbent. The model was subjected to a Multi-Objective Optimization (MOO) to evaluate the technoeconomic feasibility of the process and to identify the operating conditions which yielded the lowest cost. The objectives of the MOO were to minimize the cost of CO2 capture based on a discounted cash flow analysis, while simultaneously maximizing the quantity of CO2 captured. This optimization identified the minimum cost of capture as 612 USD tonne−1 for dry air entering the process at 25 °C, and 657 USD tonne−1 for air at 22 °C and 39% relative humidity. The latter represents more realistic conditions which can be expected for subtropical climates. The co... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: enhanced oil recovery, foam stability, gemini surfactant, phenyl spacer
Application of foam in various upstream operations, such as in enhanced oil recovery, has gained significant attention in recent years. A good foaming agent should generate a stable foam, must be thermally stable (>90 °C, typical reservoir temperature), must have a high tolerance to salinity, and should have low adsorption on the reservoir rock. In view of this, four thermally stable and salt-tolerant polyoxyethylene cationic gemini surfactants were synthesized with different spacers (mono phenyl and biphenyl) and different counterions (Br− and Cl−). Foaming properties were evaluated using initial foam generation, foam volume stability at a given time, bubble count, and average foam bubble radius. The effect of counterions and nature of spacers, with and without the presence of salts, on foaming properties was evaluated. It was found that number of phenyl rings (mono phenyl and biphenyl) had no significant effect on foamability and foam stability in the presence or absence of salts. Ho... [more]
On the Recovery of PLP-Molar Mass Distribution at High Laser Frequencies: A Simulation Study
Shaghayegh Hamzehlou, M. Ali Aboudzadeh, Yuri Reyes
October 26, 2019 (v1)
Keywords: degree of branching, n-butyl acrylate, PLP-SEC
Due to the inherent difficulties in determination of the degree of branching for polymers produced in pulsed laser polymerization (PLP) experiments, the behavior of the degree of branching and backbiting reaction in high laser frequency and relatively high reaction temperatures have not been well-established. Herein, through a simulation study, the validity of different explanations on the recovery of PLP-molar mass distribution at high laser frequencies is discussed. It is shown that the reduction of the backbiting reaction rate at high laser frequency, and consequent decrease in the degree of branching, is not a necessary condition for recovering the PLP-molar mass distribution. The findings of this work provide simulation support to a previous explanation about the possibility of using high laser frequency for reliable determination of the propagation rate coefficient for acrylic monomers.

October 26, 2019 (v1)
Keywords: coal water slurry, flotation, gaseous pretreatment, low-rank coal
Low-rank coal is difficult to upgrade using conventional flotation methods due to its high hydrophilic properties. Thus, it is necessary to explore new methods for upgrading and utilizing low-rank coal. In this investigation, a gaseous dodecane pretreatment method was used to enhance the flotation performance of low-rank coal. Pore distribution analysis, FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy), and contact angle measurements were used to study the surface properties of the coal sample. Size distribution and float-sink test results indicated that the coal sample contained a lot of clean coal with low ash content, which could be used as a high quality raw material for making coal water slurry. FTIR, pore distribution analysis, and contact angle results showed that the coal was very hydrophilic due to the high concentration of -OH group and the large number of pores and cracks on the coal surface. The hydrophobicity of the coal sample was significantly improved by the gaseous dodec... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: deterministic ratchets, label-free separation, three-dimensional effects
Experiments have shown that a suspension of particles of different dimensions pushed through a periodic lattice of micrometric obstacles can be sorted based on particle size. This label-free separation mechanism, referred to as Deterministic Lateral Displacement (DLD), has been explained hinging on the structure of the 2D solution of the Stokes flow through the patterned geometry, thus neglecting the influence of the no-slip conditions at the top and bottom walls of the channel hosting the obstacle lattice. We show that the no-slip conditions at these surfaces trigger the onset of off-plane velocity components, which impart full three-dimensional character to the flow. The impact of the 3D flow structure on particle transport is investigated by enforcing an excluded volume approach for modelling the interaction between the finite-sized particles and the solid surfaces. We find that the combined action of particle diffusion and of the off-plane velocity component causes the suspended pa... [more]

Keywords: demand response, enhanced differential evolution, home energy management, hybrid gray wolf-modified enhanced differential evolutionary algorithm, load scheduling, smart grid
With the emergence of the smart grid (SG), real-time interaction is favorable for both residents and power companies in optimal load scheduling to alleviate electricity cost and peaks in demand. In this paper, a modular framework is introduced for efficient load scheduling. The proposed framework is comprised of four modules: power company module, forecaster module, home energy management controller (HEMC) module, and resident module. The forecaster module receives a demand response (DR), information (real-time pricing scheme (RTPS) and critical peak pricing scheme (CPPS)), and load from the power company module to forecast pricing signals and load. The HEMC module is based on our proposed hybrid gray wolf-modified enhanced differential evolutionary (HGWmEDE) algorithm using the output of the forecaster module to schedule the household load. Each appliance of the resident module receives the schedule from the HEMC module. In a smart home, all the appliances operate according to the sch... [more]

October 26, 2019 (v1)
Keywords: dead time, MIMO temperature control in heating process system, pole-zero cancelation, temperature difference, transient response
With the rapid development of industrial technology, the multi-point (multi-input multi-output) heating processing systems with integrated temperature control have been increasingly needed to achieve high-quality and high-performance processing. In this paper, in response to the demand for proper transient response and to provide more accurate temperature controls, a novel pole-zero cancelation method is proposed for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) temperature control in heating process systems. In the proposed method, the temperature differences and transient characteristics of all points can be improved by compensating dead time difference and coupling effect together by matrix compensation and pole-zero cancelation with the feedforward reference model. Both simulations and experiments were carried out. The results were compared to the well-tuned conventional PI control system and PI plus decoupling compensation system to evaluate the control efficiency of the proposed method.

Keywords: economic viability, environmental efficiency, hydrogen production processes, multi-criteria analysis, Renewable and Sustainable Energy
The widespread penetration of hydrogen in mainstream energy systems requires hydrogen production processes to be economically competent and environmentally efficient. Hydrogen, if produced efficiently, can play a pivotal role in decarbonizing the global energy systems. Therefore, this study develops a framework which evaluates hydrogen production processes and quantifies deficiencies for improvement. The framework integrates slack-based data envelopment analysis (DEA), with fuzzy analytical hierarchy process (FAHP) and fuzzy technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (FTOPSIS). The proposed framework is applied to prioritize the most efficient and sustainable hydrogen production in Pakistan. Eleven hydrogen production alternatives were analyzed under five criteria, including capital cost, feedstock cost, O&M cost, hydrogen production, and CO2 emission. FAHP obtained the initial weights of criteria while FTOPSIS determined the ultimate weights of criteria for each... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: arrhenius equation, flow behavior, nickel-based alloy, processing maps
An in-depth understanding of the flow behaviors of materials deformed at high temperatures is of paramount significance. However, insufficient research on the nickel-based GH4698 alloy has resulted in inaccurate material flow prediction or even cracking in the practical billet opening of GH4698 large forgings. In this study, hot compressions were performed at 950−1150 °C and 0.001−3 s−1. Single-peaked strain-stress curves were obtained under various conditions, owing to dislocation motions in dynamic recrystallizations. The Arrhenius model was formulated to accurately describe the flow stress evolutions and the mean prediction error of the flow stress was 5.90%. Processing maps were constructed at various hot working conditions. It was found that the hot working ability of GH4698 markedly decreased under lower temperatures (950−1080 °C) and higher strain rates (0.1−3 s−1). Optimal thermal processing parameters were suggested. In sum, this study systematically investigated the flow beha... [more]

Keywords: hardware experiment, memetic salp swarm algorithm, optimal nonlinear adaptive control, perturbation observer, voltage source converter
Voltage source converter (VSC) has been extensively applied in renewable energy systems which can rapidly regulate the active and reactive power. This paper aims at developing a novel optimal nonlinear adaptive control (ONAC) scheme to control VSC in both rectifier mode and inverter mode. Firstly, the nonlinearities, parameter uncertainties, time-varying external disturbances, and unmodelled dynamics can be aggregated into a perturbation, which is then estimated by an extended state observer (ESO) called high-gain perturbation observer (HGPO) online. Moreover, the estimated perturbation will be fully compensated through state feedback. Besides, the observer gains and controller gains are optimally tuned by a recent emerging biology-based memetic salp swarm algorithm (MSSA), the utilization of such method can ensure a desirably satisfactory control performance. The advantage of ONAC is that even though the operation conditions are constantly changing, the control performance can still b... [more]

Keywords: eutrophication, off-site reservoir, storm water management model (SWMM), watershed water quality model
Off-site reservoirs use water from other watersheds to supplement their water quantity. Water quality is usually better in off-site reservoirs than in onsite reservoirs, because in comparison to onsite reservoirs, watershed areas are smaller and fewer pollutants are collected; moreover, cleaner water is introduced. However, in Taiwan, the water quality of some off-site reservoirs can gradually worsen, and this factor needs to be addressed. In this study, the Liyutan reservoir in central Taiwan was used as an example to demonstrate the process of evaluating pollution in an off-site reservoir. Pollution loads from point sources (PSs) and nonpoint sources (NPSs) were carefully estimated. Domestic sewage and tourist wastewater were considered the major PS loads in this study. The NPS load evaluation was dependent on the results of a verified watershed model, the stormwater management model (SWMM). The observed data in 2015 and 2016 and supplementary total phosphorous (TP) samplings in upst... [more]

In the present study, we examine three-dimensional thin film flow over an angular rotating disk plane in the presence of nanoparticles. The governing basic equations are transformed into ordinary differential equations by using similarity variables. The series solution has been obtained by the homotopy asymptotic method (HAM) for axial velocity, radial velocity, darning flow, induced flow, and temperature and concentration profiles. For the sake of accuracy, the results are also clarified numerically with the help of the BVPh2- midpoint method. The effect of embedded parameters such as the Brownian motion parameter Nb, Schmidt number Sc, thermophoretic parameter and Prandtl number Pr are explored on velocity, temperature and concentration profiles. It is observed that with the increase in the unsteadiness factor S, the thickness of the momentum boundary layer increases, while the Sherwood number Sc, with the association of heat flow from sheet to fluid, reduces with the rise in S and r... Keywords: long-term storage system, preventive maintenance, real-time reliability, sequential inspection, Wiener process
For long-term storage systems such as rockets and missiles, most of the relevant models and algorithms for inspection and maintenance currently focus on analysis based on periodic inspection. However, considering factors such as the complexity of the degradation mechanisms of these systems, the constraints imposed by failure risk, and the uncertainty caused by environmental factors, it is preferable to dynamically determine the inspection intervals based on real-time status information. This paper investigates the issue of maintenance optimization modelling for long-term storage systems based on real-time reliability evaluation. First, the Wiener process is used to establish a performance degradation model for one critical unit of such a system, and a closed-form expression for the real-time reliability distribution is obtained by using the first-hitting-time theory. Second, sequential inspection intervals are dynamically determined by combining the real-time reliability function with... [more]
