CFD Investigation of a Hybrid Wells Turbine with Passive Flow Control

In the past decade, there has been renewed interest in wave energy harvesting utilizing oscillating water columns (OWC), one of the most well-studied wave energy harnessing technologies. In the OWC, pneumatic power from ocean waves is converted to mechanical energy by Wells turbines. It should be noted, however, that such turbines tend to perform poorly, have a limited operating range, and have low efficiency. Comparison of Space Cooling Systems from Energy and Economic Perspectives for a Future City District in Sweden

In this study, the performance of different cooling technologies from energy and economic perspectives were evaluated for six different prototype residential Nearly Zero Energy Buildings (NZEBs) within a planned future city district in central Sweden. This was carried out by assessing the primary energy number and life cycle cost analysis (LCCA) for each building model and cooling technology. Projected future climate file representing the 2050s (mid-term future) was employed. Investigation into Dynamic Pressure Pulsation Characteristics in a Centrifugal Pump with Staggered Impeller

For the centrifugal pump, the rotor−stator interaction (RSI) induces high-energy pressure pulsation, which directly affects the stability of systems and equipment. Therefore, this work proposes a new staggered impeller structure to suppress high-energy pressure pulsation in centrifugal pumps. The original impeller blade is divided into two layers and is staggered at 10°, 20° and 30° to form a staggered impeller. The dynamic pressure pulsation characteristics of both the original impeller and the staggered impeller are predicted using large eddy simulation (LES). The results indicate that the uniform staggered arrangement of blades can significantly reduce the pressure pulsation energy in the pump by 54.69% under the design conditions, while also achieving the best performance. The Impact of Export Sophistication of the New Energy Industry on Carbon Emissions: An Empirical Study

Existing research has insufficiently explored the nexus between the new energy industry and CO2 emissions from the standpoint of export sophistication. This study analyses the implications of the new energy industry’s export sophistication on CO2 emissions, regional heterogeneity, and its influencing mechanism by gathering data from 31 major economies throughout the world between 1996 and 2021. The study found that the new energy industry’s export sophistication helps reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and this conclusion still holds after robustness testing; the carbon emission reduction effect of the export sophistication of the new energy industry is more significant in developed countries than in developing countries; the new energy industry’s export sophistication possesses a crowding-out effect on domestic technological progress, which to a certain extent impedes carbon reduction effect. A Low-Density Polyethylene-Reinforced Ternary Phase-Change Composite with High Thermal Conductivity for Battery Thermal Management

Direct Numerical Simulation of Thermal Turbulent Boundary Layer Flow over Multiple V-Shaped Ribs at Different Angles

Direct numerical simulations (DNSs) of spatially developing thermal turbulent boundary layers over angle-ribbed walls were performed. Four rib angles (γ=90°,60°,45° and 30°) were examined. It was found that the 45° ribs produced the highest drag coefficient, whereas the 30° ribs most improved the Stanton number. In comparison to the transverse rib case, streamwise velocity and dimensionless temperature in the V-shaped cases significantly increased in the near wall region and were attenuated by secondary flows further away from the ribs, which suggested a break of the outer-layer similarity in the scenario presented. The surprising improvement of heat transfer performance in the 30° rib case was mainly due to its large dispersive heat flux, while dispersive stress reached its peak value in the 45° case, emphasizing the dissimilarity in transporting momentum and heat by turbulence over a ribbed surface. Characterization of the Hydropower Inlet Effect on the Electric Network Frequency

One of the challenges posed by renewable energies is the stabilization of parameters related to the quality of electrical energy. This study demonstrates the existence of a relationship between input blocks of hydropower and the variation of the fundamental frequency of the electricity grid. By mapping production data provided by the Spanish Electric Network with frequency measured in the laboratory, it is shown that gradients of hydropower are correlated with frequency fluctuations for certain characteristic times. Considering hourly instances of energy input, the study compares two methods for calculating hydropower gradients (linear regression and pseudo-linear regression) and two methods for calculating local frequency extrema (the “specular inertia” method and analysis by comparison with the moving average) in order to corroborate the results.

This article presents an automatic digital unbalanced impedance bridge for comparing two-port impedances: R-R, R-C and C-C. The bridge consists of a two-channel digital source of voltage sinusoidal waveforms supplying the bridge arms and a three-channel precise digitizer, by means of which the complex ratio of the source output voltages and the relative bridge unbalanced voltage are determined. The hardware implementation of the bridge is based on a relatively inexpensive universal data acquisition (DAQ) card by National Instruments, USB-6281, which contains, among others, a multi-channel 18-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and two 16-bit digital-to-analog converters (DAC). The degradation of the insulation system in liquid-filled power transformers is a serious concern for electric power utilities. The insulation system’s ageing is accelerated by moisture, acids, oxidation products, and other decay particles (soluble and colloidal). The presence of these ageing by-products is detrimental to the insulation system and may further lead to premature ageing and serious consequences. The ageing mechanisms of oil-paper insulation are complex, highly interrelated, and strongly temperature-dependent. The operating temperature of the transformer insulating system has a direct relationship with the loading profile. The major aspect that is witnessed with the fluctuating temperatures is moisture migration and subsequent bubble evolution.
