Intelligent Monitoring of Photovoltaic Systems via Simplicial Empirical Models and Performance Loss Rate Evaluation under LabVIEW: A Case Study
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: behavioral modeling, fault diagnosis, intelligent monitoring, photovoltaic systems
The capacity of photovoltaic solar power installations has been boosted last years by reaching a new record with 175 GWdc of newly installed solar power in 2021. To guarantee reliable performances of photovoltaic (PV) plants and maintain target requirements, faults have to be reliably detected and diagnosed. A method for an effective and reliable fault diagnosis of PV plants based on the behavioral model and performance analysis under the LabVIEW environment is presented in this paper. Specifically, the first phase of this study consists of the behavioral modeling of the PV array and the inverter in order to estimate the electricity production and analyze the performance of the 9.54 kWp Grid Connected PV System (GCPVS). Here, the results obtained from the empirical models were validated and calibrated by experimental data. Furthermore, a user interface for modeling and analyzing the performance of a PV system under LabVIEW has been designed. The second phase of this work is dedicated t... [more]

Implementation and Experimental Validation of Efficiency Improvement in PM Synchronous Hub Motors for Light Electric Vehicles
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: design optimization, efficiency, electric vehicles, electromagnetic analysis, permanent magnet synchronous motor
The efficiency of permanent magnet synchronous hub motors (PMSHM) used in light electric vehicles (EVs) is lower than that used in commercial EVs. Therefore, in this study a high-efficiency radial-flux outer-rotor PMSHM was designed for light EVs. The high-efficiency motor will contribute to the reduction of the power consumption demand from the batteries of EVs, the longer life of the batteries and the longer uninterrupted operation of the system. The optimization objectives, such as motor sizing, number of slots and poles, air gap length, material selection, stator winding structure, stator slot shape, magnet thickness, and cutting method for stator sheets were considered to ensure high efficiency and low cogging torque. In this study, three validation stages were followed; electromagnetic analyzes with FEM, analytical calculations, and finally experimental validation. First, the design parameters of the motor were determined based on the analyses results obtained using ANSYS Maxwell... [more]

Reproducible Production of Lithium-Ion Coin Cells
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: coin cell, CR2032, Design of Experiments, Lithium-Ion, reproducibility, test cell production
Due to the simple structure and the possibility of manual production, coin cells enable fast and, compared to larger cell formats, an inexpensive examination option in battery research. The comparability and traceability of coin cell structures in literature are only feasible to a limited extent due to the lack of a standard in manual production. Since the findings from the literature are barely building up on each other and have not been repeated, a full factorial Design of Experiments (DoE) was performed to investigate the significance of earlier findings in terms of their influence on the reproducibility of the performance. The parameters studied were the anode-to-cathode ratio, the amount of electrolyte, the spring type and the separator count. To quantify the reproducibility of coin cell assembly, the number of functional cells (here: successful formation followed by 30 cycles) and the empirical coefficient of variation for the performance parameters discharge capacity, internal r... Performance Analysis of a Hydrogen-Doped High-Efficiency Hybrid Cycle Rotary Engine in High-Altitude Environments Based on a Single-Zone Model
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: high-altitude performance, high-efficiency hybrid cycle rotary engine, hydrogen doping, power attenuation, single-zone model
The power attenuation of internal combustion engines in high-altitude environments restricts the performance of unmanned aerial vehicles. Herein, a single-zone model of a hydrogen-doped high-efficiency hybrid cycle rotary engine that considers high-altitude environments was proposed. The indicated values for power, thermal efficiency, and specific fuel cost were used to evaluate the power performance, energy conversion efficiency, and economic performance of the engine, respectively. Then, the effects of adjusting the hydrogen fraction, ignition angle, and rotational speed on high-altitude performance were analyzed. The results showed that high-altitude environments prolonged combustion duration and reduced in-cylinder pressure, thereby causing power attenuation; however, increasing the hydrogen fraction can increase the indicated power. At an altitude of 6 km, the indicated power with a hydrogen fraction of 0.3 was approximately 20.7% higher than that obtained with pure gasoline. The... [more]

A New Carrier Phase-Shift Modulation Based on Switching the Displacement Angle
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: carrier phase-shift (CPS) modulation, circulating current harmonic content, modular multilevel converter (MMC), output voltage harmonic content
In this paper, a new carrier phase-shift (CPS) modulation method based on switching the displacement angle (SDA) is proposed to compromise the harmonic content of the output voltage and the circulating current. It can be used in medium- and low-voltage applications where the AC-side voltage and DC-side current of the modular multilevel converter (MMC) are required to have low harmonic content simultaneously. In this proposed SDA-based CPS modulation, the carrier displacement angle of the MMC with N submodules in each arm is periodically switched between the values of 0 and π/N degrees, so that the harmonic content of the output voltage and the harmonic content of the circulating current will not be in extreme conditions, which occurs when the displacement angle is set to 0 or π/N degrees. The effectiveness of this method has been verified by simulation and experimental results.

Interoperability Testing of a Smart Home Automation System under Explicit Demand Response Schemes
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: explicit demand response, external actor, home automation, home energy management system (HEMS), interoperability, load control, load scheduling, smart home
Interoperability becomes a key issue for smart grid systems, as the interaction between diverse components needs to lead to a normal system operation. In this paper, we test interoperability issues with respect to home automation. In particular, interaction of a home energy management system (HEMS) is examined with an external actor for home/building remote control. We show the importance and the feasibility of remotely controlling domestic loads from outside the house premises, which can be crucial for energy saving operations, such as demand response. The Smart Grid Architecture Model (SGAM) is used, where the different actors are depicted. The interoperability testing methodology for smart grids, developed by our unit, is followed in order to design the necessary tests and execute them. For the experimental part, we develop an HEMS in our lab along with a Home Automation End Device (HAED), used to transform two normal plugs, and consequently, normal loads into smart ones, thus creat... Modeling of Magnetic Properties of Rare-Earth Hard Magnets
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: hard magnets, hysteresis, magnetic properties, Modelling, praseodymium–dysprosium ribbons
Magnetic properties of hard magnets are currently attracting a great deal of attention. In the paper, the modified Harrison model was used to describe the saturating hysteresis loops of three praseodymium−dysprosium ribbons that differed in their chemical composition and processing conditions. Microstructural studies (TEM and diffraction patterns) were performed for the ribbons under consideration. The Harrison model incorporates a number of physically tangible concepts such as the anhysteretic curve, bifurcations, and bi-stability. The modification of the original approach consisted of adding an additional degree of freedom in the modeling by freeing the restraints present in the original version, in which both coercivity and remanence are functions of temperature only.

Impact of Geometry on a Thermal-Energy Storage Finned Tube during the Discharging Process
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: ANSYS FLUENT, finned tube, one-dimensional Stefan problem, phase change materials, solidification and melting, thermal-energy storage
This work focused on the modelling of latent heat thermal energy storage systems. The mathematical modelling of a melting and solidification process has time-dependent boundary conditions because the interface between solid and liquid phases is a moving boundary. The heat transfer analysis needs the interface position over time to predict the temperature inside the liquid and the solid regions. This work started by solving the classical two-phase (one-dimensional) Stefan problem through a Matlab implementation of the analytical model. The same physical problem was numerically simulated using ANSYS FLUENT, and the good match of analytical and numerical results validated the numerical model, which was used for a more interesting problem: comparing three different latent heat TES configurations during the discharging process to evaluate the most efficient in terms of maximum average discharging power. The three axial heat conduction structures changed only for the fin shape (rectangular,... [more]

Electric Power Quality through Analysis and Experiment
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electric consumers, industrial applications, power quality
The quality of electrical energy is of particular importance for power engineering. This study presents an analysis of articles made in the Special Issue “Analysis and Experiments for Electric Power Quality”. As techniques and technology advance, electrical consumers and equipment become more sensitive to disturbances in the electrical network (in particular, low- and medium-voltage). It can lead to costly outages and lost production, which affect productivity. The analyzed articles present interesting technical studies made on industrial and nonindustrial consumers, of low- and medium-voltage, from the point of view of the quality of electricity. Voltage and current harmonics, voltage sags and swells, interruptions, unbalance, and low power factor will lead to higher electricity bills, overloading, and rapid aging of electrical networks and electric equipment. The power quality depends not only on the supplier but also on all consumers connected to the same power network; some can cau... [more]

Study of Heat Flux Density of Dish Solar Cavity Heat Absorber
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: dish solar, heat absorber installation position, heat flux, Monte Carlo method, numerical simulation
The solar cavity heat absorber is the core component of a solar thermal power generation system; its structure and installation position directly affect the efficiency of the heat absorber. To study the influence of these factors on the performance of the heat absorber, in this paper, a numerical simulation of dish solar collector optics is constructed based on the Monte Carlo method, and the distribution characteristics of heat flux density under different heat absorber structures and installation positions are analyzed. The results show that the heat flux density on the inner wall surface of the absorber has a linear relationship with the solar radiation intensity; under the same cavity depth, the energy received by the cylindrical, dome, and inverted cone absorbers is easier to deposit on the top. The heat flux density on the top surface of the inner cavity presents an annular distribution law. As the position of the heat absorber moves away from the dish solar collector surface, th... [more]

A Step-Up Converter with Large Voltage Gain and Low Voltage Rating on Capacitors
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: continuous conduction mode (CCM), DC–DC converter, PWM power conversion, step-up converter, voltage rating
Step-up converters are widely used in many applications, such as renewable energy generation with photovoltaic panels and fuel cell stacks. In many cases, the required voltage gain is larger for those applications than a traditional boost converter can achieve. Several large-voltage gain converters have been recently studied. This paper introduces a converter topology in which the voltage gain is larger than a traditional boost converter. The main advantages of the proposed topology are: (i) it provides a large voltage gain without the use of an extreme duty cycle; (ii) its capacitors require a smaller voltage to be sustained compared with other, similar state-of-the-art converters; (iii) the voltage among the ground input and output is not pulsating; and (iv) it can be synthesized with commercial, off-the-shelf half-bridge packed transistors. The proposed converter can be employed in different applications, such as distributed generation and microgrids. This paper presents the steady-... [more]

Optimizing Fuel Efficiency on an Islanded Microgrid under Varying Loads
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: energy management, energy storage system, fuel efficiency, generator, microgrid optimization, time-varying loads
Past studies of microgrids have been based on measurements of fuel consumption by generators under static loads. There is little information on the fuel efficiency of generators under time-varying loads. To help analyze the impact of time-varying loads on optimal generator operation and fuel consumption, we formulate a mixed-integer linear optimization model to plan generator and energy storage system (ESS) operation to satisfy known demands. Our model includes fuel consumption penalty terms on time-varying loads. We exercise the model on various scenarios and compare the resulting optimal fuel consumption and generator operation profiles. Our results show that the change in fuel efficiency between scenarios with the integration of ESS is minimal regardless of the imposed penalty placed on the generator. However, without the assistance of the ESS, the fuel consumption increases dramatically with the penalty imposed on the generator. The integration of an ESS improves fuel consumption b... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cluster resonance, damping coefficient, disturbance observer, grid-connected inverter, robustness
In response to the key engineering problems of photovoltaic grid-connected inverter cluster resonance suppression affected by grid-connected inverter impedance, in this paper, a control strategy based on a disturbance observer is proposed to dynamically compensate for the damping coefficient of the controlled system and improve the robustness of the system. First, an engineering mathematical model of a 200 MW photovoltaic inverter cluster is established, and the mechanism of the active damping of the cluster inverter influenced by the disturbance is analyzed. Secondly, the capacitor current feedback is utilized to constitute the virtual damping, and the inverter output impedance is reshaped to suppress the resonance peak. Then, a Kalman filter is used to improve the traditional disturbance observer to accurately detect disturbance of the system during the dynamic process of the cluster inverter so as to better adapt to changes in grid impedance and dynamically compensate for the virtua... Experimental Research on the Flow and Heat Transfer Characteristics of Subcritical and Supercritical Water in the Vertical Upward Smooth and Rifled Tubes
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: friction resistance coefficient, heat transfer coefficient, supercritical boiler, supercritical water, variable pressure operation
Experiments were conducted to investigate the heat transfer and flow characteristics of the vertical upward smooth and rifled tubes from subcritical to supercritical pressure. The distributions of wall temperature and heat transfer coefficient (HTC) were obtained, and the HTC correlations and friction resistance coefficient correlations were fitted with experimental data. In addition, the influences of heat flux and type of tube on heat transfer performance were analyzed. The research shows that heat flux has different influences on the heat transfer characteristics under different pressures. The increase in heat flux improves the heat transfer characteristics in the nucleate boiling region, yet it leads to the advance in heat transfer deterioration. However, for supercritical water, the increase in heat flux reduces the heat transfer ability. In addition, using the rifled tube not only improves the heat transfer performance, but also inhibits the occurrence of heat transfer deteriorat... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: catalyst-coated membrane, electrochemical characterization, oxygen evolution reaction catalysts, PEM water electrolysis
Proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology may regulate the electrical grid connected to intermittent power sources. The growing pace of R&D in alternative components is widening manufacturing methods and testing procedures across the literature. This turns the comparison between performances into a more laborious task, especially for those starting research in this area, increasing the importance of testing components accessible to all. In this study, an electrochemical characterization is performed on a commercial single-cell PEM water electrolyzer with commercial catalyst-coated membranes (CCMs) and one prepared in-house. Two membrane thicknesses and the effect of different catalysts are assessed. The thicker membrane, Nafion 117, operates with 5% greater ohmic overvoltage than the thinner Nafion 115, resulting in up to 1.5% higher voltage for the former membrane. Equivalent Ir black CCMs provided by different suppliers and one prepared in-house perform similarly. Regarding the influ... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Buck-Boost, Cuk, MPPT methods, PV system, SEPIC, Zeta
The power produced in a photovoltaic (PV) system is highly dependent on meteorological conditions and the features of the connected load. Therefore, maximum power point tracking (MPPT) methods are crucial to optimize the power delivered. An MPPT method needs a DC-DC converter for its implementation. The proper selection of both the MPPT technique and the power converter for a given scenario is one of the main challenges since they directly influence the overall efficiency of the PV system. This paper presents an exhaustive study of the performance of four step-down/step-up DC-DC converter topologies: Buck-Boost, SEPIC, Zeta and Cuk, using three of the most commonly implemented MPPT techniques: incremental conductance (IncCond), perturb and observe (P&O) and fuzzy logic controller (FLC). Unlike other works available in the literature, this study compares and discusses the performance of each MPPT/converter combination in terms of settling time and tracking efficiency of MPPT algorithms,... New Trends in the Control of Grid-Connected Photovoltaic Systems for the Provision of Ancillary Services
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active power reserves, ancillary services, maximum power point tracking (MPPT), power curtailment, solar photovoltaics (PV)
The gradual displacement of conventional generation from the energy mix to give way to renewable energy sources represents a paradigm shift in the operation of future power systems: on the one hand, renewable technologies are, in general, volatile and difficult to predict; and on the other hand, they are usually connected to the grid through electronic power converters. This decoupling due to power converters means that renewable generators lack the natural response that conventional generation has to the imbalances between demand and generation that occur during the regular operation of power systems. Renewable generators must, therefore, provide a series of complementary services for the correct operation of power systems in addition to producing the necessary amount of energy. This paper presents an overview of existing methods in the literature that allow photovoltaic generators to participate in the provision of ancillary services, focusing on solutions based on power curtailment... Artificial Neural Networks: Multilayer Perceptron and Radial Basis to Obtain Post-Contingency Loading Margin in Electrical Power Systems
February 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, contingency analysis, continuation methods, load flow, maximum loading point, voltage collapse, voltage stability margin
This paper presents the ANN (Artificial Neural Networks) approach to obtaining complete P-V curves of electrical power systems subjected to contingency. Two networks were presented: the MLP (multilayer perceptron) and the RBF (radial basis function) networks. The differential of our methodology consisted in the speed of obtaining all the P-V curves of the system. The great advantage of using ANN models is that they can capture the nonlinear characteristics of the studied system to avoid iterative procedures. The applicability and effectiveness of the proposed methodology have been investigated on IEEE test systems (14 buses) and compared with the continuation power flow, which obtains the post-contingency loading margin starting from the base case solution. From the results, the ANN performed well, with a mean squared error (MSE) in training below the specified value. Keywords: extended finite element, fracture characteristics, harmonic dynamic load, rock fracture, stress intensity factor
Based on the existing research results, a theoretical fracture model of strata under the compound impact of static and harmonic dynamic load is improved, and the fracture characteristic parameters (stress intensity factor, T-stress, and fracture initiation angle) under the two far-field stress are determined according to the crack dip angle. Additionally, the effects of harmonic dynamic load on the distribution of the stress field and the fracture characteristic (the crack initiation angle, the fracture degree, the number of fracture units, and the fracture area) are further calculated and discussed by theoretical model solution, extended finite element simulation, and the secondary development of the simulation module, respectively. The research results show that the far-field stress, stress intensity factor, and T-stress vary in harmonic form with time under the compound impact of static and harmonic dynamic loads. Keywords: boiler-turbine system, Model Predictive Control, nominal stability, subspace identification, terminal constraint
This paper aims to address a finite-horizon model predictive control (MPC) for non-linear drum-type boiler-turbine system using a system-identification method. Considering that the strong state coupling of a non-linear mechanism model, the subspace identification method is first utilized to obtain a linear state-space model, and transformed into an input−output model. By taking the inputs and outputs of the input−output model as system states, an augmented non-minimal state-space (NMSS) model of state measurable is constructed. In order to reduce the computation burden, the augmented NMSS model is further transformed into a canonical formulation by adopting a Kalman decomposition. Based on the minimal realization state-space model, the MPC controller is parameterized as a finite-horizon optimization problem. Finally, simulations are performed and evaluated the performance of the proposed method, and the simulation results show that: the linear model approximate the non-linear system ac... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: alternative fuel, Diesel, non-road application, NOx, Oxymethylene Ether (OME), particles, pollutants, pump–line–nozzle, soot
Non-road sectors, such as agriculture and construction machinery, require high energy densities and flexibility in use, which is why diesel engines are mainly used. The use of climate-neutral fuels, produced from renewable energies, such as Oxymethylene Ether (OME) as a diesel substitute, can significantly reduce CO2 and pollutant emissions in these sectors. In addition to CO2 neutrality, OME also offers improved combustion characteristics compared to diesel fuel, eliminating the soot−NOx trade-off and thus enabling new opportunities in engine design and calibration. In this paper, the combustion of pure OME on a close-to-production, single-cylinder non-road diesel engine with a pump−line−nozzle injection system is analyzed.
