Comparative Performance Evaluation of Gas Brayton Cycle for Micro−Nuclear Reactors
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: air Brayton cycle, polytropic efficiency, S-CO2 Brayton cycle
Gas Brayton cycles have been considered the next promising power cycles for microreactors. Especially the open-air and closed supercritical CO2 (S-CO2) Brayton cycles have received attention due to their high thermal efficiency and compact component sizes when compared to the steam Rankine cycle. In this research, the performances of the open-air and closed S-CO2 Brayton cycle at microreactor power range are compared with polytropic turbomachinery efficiency. When optimizing the cycle, three different optimization parameters are considered in this paper: maximum efficiency, maximum cycle specific work, and maximum of the product of both indicators. For the air Brayton cycle, the maximum of the product of both indicators allows to consider both efficiency and specific work while optimizing the cycle. However, for the S-CO2 Brayton cycle, the best performing conditions follow either maximum efficiency or the maximum cycle specific work conditions. In general, the S-CO2 power cycle should... [more]

Energetic, Economic and Environmental (3E) Analysis of a RES-Waste Gasification Plant with Syngas Storage Cooperation
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: hybrid generation systems, on-grid renewable energy sources, power generation system modelling, waste gasification
Today, the increasing amount of waste is a growing ecological and financial problem. Another issue is the need to limit the share of controllable sources powered by fossil fuels. A hybrid generation system (HGS) is proposed to solve both problems. The system consists of renewable energy sources (RES) and a waste gasification system. Contrary to many papers, it is proposed to include syngas storage and use gas turbines as balancing sources. The HGS was modeled, and electricity generation, capacity factors, and efficiencies were calculated. The economic (LCOE and PP) and environmental parameters (CO2 emission and reduction) were analyzed and calculated for different RES capacities. The results show that the proposed HGS covered 45.7−80% of municipal demand. The HGS was characterized by high CO2 emissions, due to the low efficiency of gasification-gas turbine installation and the need to compress syngas. However, the HGS can be environmentally beneficial due to the reduction in waste disp... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery fast charging cooling, CO2 refrigerant, cooling and heating capacity
In this paper, a new R744 heat pump system is studied. The gas cooler, evaporator, indoor heat core, and indoor gas cooler are all micro-channel heat exchangers. The R744 high pressure system adopts a combination of an accumulator and internal heat exchanger (ACCU/IHX). In addition, an electronic reversible regulating valve is added before the outdoor gas cooler, making the outdoor heat exchanger able to be used as a gas cooler or evaporator. The water-cooled condenser can improve the performance in the cooling or heating mode. The research contents contain the performance and optimal pressure under extreme conditions as a result of the experiments. The results show that the cooling capacity can reach 8.2 kW with a COP of 1.87, under a 40 °C external circulation intake. The cooling capacity on the battery side can reach 11 kW under an ambient temperature of 40 °C, which can provide a sufficient cooling capacity. Under an ambient temperature of −20 °C, the maximum heating capacity can r... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: argumentation, carbon capture and storage (CCS), media analysis, Netherlands, policy, societal acceptance, societal perception
Policymakers in several European countries are considering the implementation of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology as part of a strategy to prevent further climate change. Successful CCS implementation requires societal support but planned CCS projects have encountered significant opposition. In this study, we examine the CCS coverage in Dutch national newspapers from 2017 to 2019, a period during which the Dutch CCS landscape underwent several substantial changes, and compare the results to those of earlier media analyses conducted between 1991 and 2011. Most of the 324 articles identified discussed CCS in a neutral (36.4%) or balanced (24.4%) manner, and more critical articles than supportive ones were found (23.1% vs. 16.0%). Consistent with the earlier media analyses, the potential of CCS to reduce carbon dioxide emissions was a major theme in the positive portrayal of CCS, while the argument that CCS implementation is needed for the prompt reduction in emissions gained p... Inverter-Less Integration of Roof-Top Solar PV with Grid Connected Industrial Drives
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: green energy, grid-tied inverter, inverter-less, solar PV
Green energy from Solar PV is getting increased attention in the industries due to the falling price of solar panels in the world market. A grid-tied inverter is one of the major components in such a system, where the DC energy from PV is converted to AC and synchronized with the grid to obtain power sharing between the PV and the grid for the industrial drives. In this paper, a DC link has been proposed instead of an AC link for interconnection between the solar PV system and the grid to run those industrial drives. In most modern industrial applications, induction motors are driven by VVVF (Variable Voltage and Variable Frequency) inverters to achieve efficient speed control. The inverters commonly have a rectifier section at the front end that rectifies the input AC to DC and the DC is then used in PWM mode to generate the required voltage and frequency for the induction motor operating under variable speed and load conditions. Such an inverter can use both AC or DC as the input so... [more]

Non-Hardware-Based Non-Technical Losses Detection Methods: A Review
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, distribution systems, Machine Learning, non-hardware-based methods, Non-Technical Losses
Non-Technical Losses (NTL) represent a serious concern for electric companies. These losses are responsible for revenue losses, as well as reduced system reliability. Part of the revenue loss is charged to legal consumers, thus, causing social imbalance. NTL methods have been developed in order to reduce the impact in physical distribution systems and legal consumers. These methods can be classified as hardware-based and non-hardware-based. Hardware-based methods need an entirely new system infrastructure to be implemented, resulting in high investment and increased cost for energy companies, thus hampering implementation in poorer nations. With this in mind, this paper performs a review of non-hardware-based NTL detection methods. These methods use distribution systems and consumers’ data to detect abnormal energy consumption. They can be classified as network-based, which use network technical parameters to search for energy losses, data-based methods, which use data science and mach... [more]

Influence of Catalytic Additive Application on the Wood-Based Waste Combustion Process
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: catalytic additives, combustion, wood-based waste
The furniture industry is one of the most dynamically developing sectors of the Polish economy. Unfortunately, due to national law, it involves producing a significant amount of wood-based waste, which can only be incinerated in installations that meet the requirements for waste incineration or co-incineration plants. This is due to the presence of various types of chemical additives in post-production residues, which increases the emission of hazardous compounds into the atmosphere during combustion. This article presents an analysis of the impact of the use of catalytic additives on the amount of emissions produced from the combustion of wood-based waste. For this purpose, the analyzed material was pelletized by mixing it with the DESONOX catalyst or by spraying the fuel with the DESONOX + H2O solution in a 1:1 ratio. Catalytic substances were introduced into the fuel until a concentration of 0.1% of its mass was obtained. The use of catalysts has significantly reduced CO and NOX emi... [more]

A Review of Electric Motors with Soft Magnetic Composite Cores for Electric Drives
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: electric motor, magnetic isotropy, soft magnetic composite, three-dimensional magnetic flux
Electric motors play a crucial role in modern industrial and domestic applications. With the trend of more and more electric drives, such as electric vehicles (EVs), the requirements for electric motors become higher and higher, e.g., high power density with good thermal dissipation and high reliability in harsh environments. Many efforts have been made to develop high performance electric motors, such as the application of advanced novel electromagnetic materials, modern control algorithms, advanced mathematical modeling, numerical computation, and artificial intelligence based optimization design techniques. Among many advanced magnetic materials, soft magnetic composite (SMC) appears very promising for developing novel electric motors, thanks to its many unique properties, such as magnetic and thermal isotropies, very low eddy current loss, and the prospect of low-cost mass production. This paper aims to present a comprehensive review about the application of SMC for developing vari... [more]

Dynamic Response Difference of Hydraulic Support under Mechanical-Hydraulic Co-Simulation: Induced by Different Roof Rotation Position and Hysteresis Effect of Relief Valve
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: dynamic response, hydraulic support, mechanical-hydraulic co-simulation, rotary impact
As key supporting equipment in coal mining, hydraulic supports are vulnerable to impact pressure from roof movement and deformation. In this paper, a mechanical-hydraulic co-simulation platform for hydraulic supports is established. Moreover, the rationality of the simulation platform is verified. Based on this platform, the rigid-flexible coupling impact dynamics model of hydraulic support is built. Finally, by delaying the opening time of the relief valve, the energy dissipation problem of the relief valve hysteresis effect on the hydraulic support system under the rotary impact is discussed. The results indicate that the rotary load acting on the hydraulic support decreases gradually with the backward movement of the roof rotary position, which causes the peak pressure in the column to decrease (by 69 MPa). The hinge point load of different parts shows different load transfer laws. The hysteresis effect of the relief valve prolongs the energy release time of the system, increasing t... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Biomass, Eulerian–Eulerian model, fluidized bed, kinetic theory for granular flow, two-fluid model
Biomass as a clean and renewable source of energy has immense potential to aid in solving the energy crisis in the world. In order to accurately predict the fluidization behavior of biomass particles using the Eulerian−Eulerian approach and the kinetic theory for granular flows (KTGF), employing appropriate models that adapt to irregularly shaped particles and can precisely predict the interaction between particles is crucial. In this study, the effects of varying radial distribution functions (RDF), frictional viscosity models (FVM), angles of internal friction (ϕ), and stress blending functions (SBF) on the performance of two-fluid models (TFM) were investigated. Simulation predictions were compared and validated with the previous experiments in the literature on Geldart B biomass particles of walnut shells. When applying sphericity to account for size irregularities of biomass particles, the results of this study demonstrated that predictions of both the Ma−Ahmadi and the Carnahan−S... [more]

Energy-Efficient Optimization Method of Urban Rail Train Based on Following Consistency
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: consistency cooperative control, energy-efficient, events trigger, parameter adaptation, urban rail train
Because of the short distance between stations in urban rail transit, frequent braking of urban rail trains during operation will generate a large amount of regenerative braking energy. Urban rail trains can reduce their actual traction energy consumption using regenerative braking energy. Therefore, an energy-efficient optimization method for urban rail trains is proposed. By taking the punctuality of trains as the premise, the weighted acceleration of trains is taken as the synergetic variable, the synergetic coefficient is introduced to construct the following consistency model, and its convergence is proved. By analyzing the influencing factors of the following consistency coordination time, an adaptive parameter adjustment strategy is designed to solve the latest secondary traction time and the corresponding maximum speed of the primary traction. In order to save communication resources, the event trigger function is used to construct trigger conditions, and the consistency algori... [more]

Computational Modelling of Airflow and Heat Transfer during Cooling of Stacked Tomatoes: Optimal Crate Design
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: airflow rate, Computational Fluid Dynamics, crate design, temperature uniformity
A 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was developed to predict the airflow and heat transfer in half of a pallet layer of tomatoes. The numerical and experimental results were compared, and a good agreement was obtained between both results using the root-mean-square error (RMSE) and absolute relative deviation (ARD) values as criteria. The validated CFD model was then used to minimise the product temperature heterogeneity by optimising the airflow rate and the crate design. A downward flow of the air along the central parts of the crates and an upward flow close to the lateral walls of the crates were observed. Three different total ventilated areas (TVAs) were tested to study their influence on the product temperature uniformity and cooling rate. The MTD and ATD decreased from 6.8 to 3.5 °C and from 1.5 to 0.7 °C, respectively, when the TVA was increased from 11 to 15%.

Robust Control Based on Observed States Designed by Means of Linear Matrix Inequalities for Grid-Connected Converters
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: grid-connected converters, state observers, uncertain parameters
This paper provides a procedure to design robust controllers based on observed states applied to three-phase inverters with LCL filters connected to a grid with uncertain and possibly time-varying impedances, which can arise in renewable energy systems and microgrid applications. Linear matrix inequalities are used to rapidly compute, off-line, based only on the choice of two scalar parameters for pole location, sets of gains for the controller and the observer, and also to provide a theoretical certificate of the closed-loop stability, including a limit for the rate of variations of the grid impedances. The proposed design procedure allows the easy implementation of robust state feedback controllers with a reduced number of sensors, ensuring good performance for different sets of grid impedances. Additionally, larger regions of guaranteed stability are provided by the proposed procedure, when compared with a similar condition from the literature. The control law using the observed sta... Impact of Terrigenous Organic Matter Input on Organic Matter Enrichment of Paleocene Source Rocks, Lishui Sag, East China Sea
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: geochemical characteristics, Lingfeng Formation, Lishui Sag, marine source rocks, organic matter enrichment
To clarify the organic matter (OM) enrichment of the Lishui Sag, the factors influencing the variable abundance of OM in the Lingfeng Formation are studied using organic geochemical data. The source rocks of the Lingfeng Formation have medium−high total organic carbon (TOC) values (0.53−3.56%). The main type of kerogen is II2-III. Compared to the shallow marine subfacies source rocks, the TOC of the delta front subfacies source rocks is higher. The distribution of biomarkers shows that the redox environment of the delta front subfacies source rock is the sub-oxidizing and oxic environment, and the source rock is mainly supplied by terrigenous higher plants; the redox environment of shallow marine subfacies source rocks is a sub-reducing and suboxic environment, and the OM mainly comes from algae. The link between OM input and OM abundance demonstrates that terrigenous OM (TOM) input has a considerable influence on OM abundance. However, there is no obvious relationship between preserva... Statistical Image Analysis on Liquid-Liquid Mixing Uniformity of Micro-Scale Pipeline with Chaotic Structure
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: chaotic pipeline, image analysis, micro-scale structure, mixing uniformity, statistical measure
The aim of this work is to introduce a novel statistical technique for quantifying the concentration field uniformity of the liquid-liquid mixing process within a micro-scale chaotic pipeline. For illustration, the microscale liquid-liquid mixer in which the inlet direction is parallel to the mixing unit is designed by using the chaotic pipeline with Baker map. Meanwhile, the non-uniformity coefficient method is adopted quantificationally instead of qualitatively estimating the concentration field uniformity of the chaotic micromixer based on uniform design theory and image analysis. Results show that the concentration distribution of the chaotic mixing process of liquid-liquid under various working conditions is obtained by solving the steady-state Navier−Stokes and diffusion convection equations. The average contribution ratio of the three basic mixing units of the chaotic Baker pipeline to the concentration field uniformity is approximately 6:3:1, which is calculated aligned with th... Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electric drives, electric vehicles, noise, NVH, vibrations
The dynamic development of electromobility has resulted in new directions of research, one of which is the analysis of the noise of traction motors. The designs of the motors used in electric vehicles are relatively new and often modified. In addition, strong competition also forces an increase in the power generated per unit mass of the motor, often at the expense of weakening the mechanical structure. This may result in an increase in the noise level generated by the electric drive, so this issue should be analyzed at the motor design stage. Different construction and operating conditions in relation to industrial or railway traction motors make it necessary to constantly develop methods for the noise analysis of the motors for electric vehicles. The aim of this article is to review the methods used so far in an analysis of the noise generated by the motors for electric vehicles. Three main methods are used by the authors of this paper: the analytical method, the hybrid method using... [more]

Subject: Process Design
Keywords: contact angles, coreflooding, low-salinity water flooding, mono and divalent ion, wettability
Recent research has highlighted wettability alteration as the main consequence of the different mechanisms involved in technologies such as adjusted brine composition water flooding (ABCW) and low-salinity water flooding (LSW). However, studies are still needed to give a phenomenological explanation, and the most influential components of the system (rock−oil−brine) must be clarified. This work focuses on determining the most relevant variables for the smart water effects to occur. Static (contact angles) and dynamic tests (coreflooding) were conducted. For the static tests, aged Berea slices, a specific crude oil (27° API, 10.5 cp at 60 °C), and mono and divalent inorganic salts (Na+, K+, Ca2+, and Mg2+/Cl−) were used in 3 different concentrations of 1000, 3000, and 5000 ppm (ionic strength variation between 0.015 and 0.06) to establish the wettability state by measuring the contact angles of the system. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: albedo, bifacial photovoltaic, Ghana, photovoltaic systems, power system simulation, red soil, renewable energy simulation, solar energy
The annual yield of bifacial photovoltaic systems is highly dependent on the albedo of the underlying soil. There are currently no published data about the albedo of red soil in western Africa. In this study, the impact of the albedo of red soil in Ghana on the energy yield of bifacial photovoltaic systems is analysed. The Mechanical Characteristics of the Neck Zone for a PEMFC Stack
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: MEA frame, neck zone, PEMFC, sealing performance, stress distribution
Generally, the unit cell in a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) stack is divided into different zones according to the characteristics of the bipolar plate. There is a zone that has been neglected, which we define as the “neck zone” for the first time in this work. Uneven stress and deformation are prone to appearing in the neck zone due to its unique structure. A three-dimensional finite element model was applied to study the influence of the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) frame materials on the mechanical characteristics of the neck zone. In addition, the sealing and the water−gas transport performances of the neck zone were evaluated via the stress fluctuation and deformation. It was found that even with the commercial polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) frame, a leak point would be generated at the region with the lowest stress, reducing the performance and even causing safety hazards. The invasion rate was proposed to assess the water−gas transport ability. When an inapprop... [more]
