Subject: Materials
Keywords: combustion, flow-through gas generator, gasification, low-melting solid material
A semi-empirical method is proposed for determining the rate of gas production in a flow-through gas generator (GG) with the allocation of a part of the gas flow produced by gasification of a low-melting solid material (LSM) in the total gas flow rate through the GG. The method is verified by test fires with polypropylene sample gasification by hot air under conditions of incoming supersonic flow with Mach number 2.43, 2.94, and 3.81 and stagnation temperature 600−700 K. The mean flow rates of gasification products obtained in test fires were 0.08 kg/s at Mach 2.43, 0.10 kg/s at Mach 2.94, and 0.05−0.02 kg/s at Mach 3.81. For obtaining 1 kg of gasification products in the test fires there was a need of 1.61 to 2.86 kg of gasifying agent.

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: analysis of energy consumption, Computational Fluid Dynamics, hydraulic system design, numerical simulation, Simulink, tunable check valve
The article presents a study of the flow through a tunable check valve used as a hydraulic lock in a system with an actuator. Special attention is given to energy losses of the liquid stream in the poppet gap. In the first stage of the research, CFD methods were used to determine the speed and pressure distributions for the fixed values of the input flow rate and the poppet position. The values of the jet angle and pressures determined based on the CFD results were used to build a simulation model of the entire hydraulic system in Matlab/Simulink environment. The influence of the spring parameters pressing the poppet against the valve seat on the pressure drop and thus on the amount of energy lost was investigated. In particular, the spring stiffness and initial tension were studied. The obtained results were used to develop guidelines for constructing a valve prototype. Finally, the results of simulation tests were verified based on the actual valve characteristic obtained on a test b... [more]

Double Impedance-Substitution Control of DFIG Based Wind Energy Conversion System
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: double impedance-substitution control (DISC), doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG), grid side converter (GSC), low-voltage ride through (LVRT), rotor side converter (RSC), wind energy conversion system (WECS)
In a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG)-based wind energy conversion system (WECS), when the grid voltage sags severely, the rotor side converter (RSC) suffers from overvoltage and overcurrent owing to the large electromotive force (EMF). To ensure that the converter operates within a safe range when grid faults occur, this paper proposes a double impedance-substitution control (DISC) strategy to improve the system’s low-voltage ride through (LVRT) capability. When the grid voltage sag is detected, the grid side converter (GSC) and RSC are connected in parallel to the rotor circuit by changing the topology of the system. In the new topology, GSC and RSC are equivalent to inductive impedance by controlling, which can not only suppress the overvoltage and overcurrent at the rotor side, but also effectively reduce the torque ripple. Additionally, the DISC strategy can provide reactive power support to the grid during LVRT. Finally, the simulation results show that the DISC strategy can... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: carrier mobility, discotic molecule, interdigitated heterojunction, vertically orientated nanotube
Ordered interdigitated heterojunction as a promising nanostructure has attracted considerable attention due to its potential application in solar cells. However, a suitable construction to achieve effective free carrier transport in these nanostructures remains a challenge. In this study, interdigitated nanostructure was fabricated by combining vertically orientated TiO2 nanotube array with discotic liquid crystal Copper (II) 2,9,16,23-tetra-tert-butyl-29H,31H-phthalocyanine (tbCuPc). These discotic molecules were assembled as homeotropic alignment in the interdigitated nanostructure, which enhanced the carrier mobility of active layer considerably. The performance of photovoltaic cells with this interdigitated heterojunction was improved. Molecule orientation leading to charge carrier mobility enhancement was found to play a key role in improving the power conversion efficiency of the devices substantially.

Power Management of a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle Using Neural Networks with Comparison to Other Approaches
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: artificial neural network (ANN), dynamic programming (DP), equivalent consumption minimization strategy (ECMS), greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), power management strategy
Many researchers spent much effort on the online power management strategies for plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). Nowadays, artificial neural networks (ANNs), one of the machine learning techniques, have also been applied to this problem due to their good performance in learning non-linear and complicated multi-inputs multi-outputs (MIMO) dynamic systems. In this paper, an ANN is applied to the online power management for a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) by predicting the torque split between an internal combustion engine (ICE) and an electric motor (e-Motor) to optimize the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by using dynamic programming (DP) results as training data. Dynamic programming can achieve a global minimum solution while it is computationally intensive and requires prior knowledge of the entire drive cycle. As such, this method cannot be implemented in real-time. The DP-based ANN controller can get the benefit of using an ANN to fit the... [more]

Variable Incremental Controller of Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Motor for Voltage-Based Flux-Weakening Control
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: flux-weakening control, high-speed operation, permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM), voltage closed-loop control
This study presents a variable incremental controller for flux-weakening control in the high-speed operation area of a permanent-magnetic synchronous motor (PMSM). In general, voltage-based flux-weakening control utilizes a reference voltage and a PI controller to generate a flux component current. In this paper, the voltage-based flux-weakening control is performed using the variable incremental controller instead of the PI controller. The variable incremental controller can control the flux component current using only the maximum speed and maximum current of the motor. A method for properly setting an appropriate variable incremental controller using acceleration is additionally presented. A variable incremental controller is applied and, accordingly, the overshoot of the motor speed can be reduced and the speed error of the motor can be minimized by reducing the difference between the actual motor and targeted accelerations. This method can simplify the design of a controller that... [more]

Subject: Materials
Keywords: Euro 6, gasoline vehicles, micro-contaminants, particle number, particulate matter, solid particles, WLTP
Exhaust emissions from vehicles are the subject of numerous studies and legal acts. In the European Union, exhaust emissions are regulated by “Euro” emission standards, which limit emissions of gaseous pollutants such as CO, CO2, HC, and NOx, as well as the particulate matter (PM) and particle number (PN). Solid particles consist of a number of micro-contaminants, inter alia polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their nitrated and oxygenated derivatives. Despite their highly mutagenic and carcinogenic character, these micro-contaminants are not regulated in Euro emissions standards. This paper presents both a general discussion of the phenomenon of particulate formation in and emission from direct injection gasoline engines, as well as a wide range of results on the subject. The subject of the micro-contaminants in solid particles from modern gasoline vehicles is explored. The samples of solid particles were collected from 11 groups of vehicles according to the WLTP test methodol... [more]

In view of the main problems of the condensing heat discharge modes of the existing underground air-conditioning system, the technical scheme of using phase change heat storage modules to improve the heat storage capacity of the reservoir is proposed. By establishing a 3D flow and transient heat transfer model of the phase change reservoir, the effects of thermal property parameters, package size and arrangement of the phase change heat storage modules on the heat storage performance of the phase change reservoir were quantitatively analyzed based on three indexes: heat storage capacity per volume Δq, guaranteed efficiency coefficient η and slope of temperature rise per unit load ε. The results show that when the phase change temperature is 29 °C (23 °C increased to 33 °C) and the latent heat value is 250 kJ/kg (100 kJ/kg increased to 250 kJ/kg), Δq (110.92 MJ/m3, 112.83 MJ/m3) and η (1.22, 1.24) under both conditions are at their most, respectively, indicating that the phase change te... Solid Rotor Core vs. Lamination Rotor Core in Fractional-Slot PMSM Motor with High Power Density
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: eddy current losses, high power density motor, lamination rotor core, solid rotor core
Fractional-slot PMSM motors allow for obtaining high values of power density factors, but at the same time, they are characterized by high values of rotor losses—in the rotor core and permanent magnets. The main causes of rotor losses in this type of motor are subharmonics and a high content of higher harmonics in the distribution of the magnetomotive force MMF. The use of a solid rotor core simplifies the construction and technology of the rotor but eddy current losses in the core account for a significant percentage of the total rotor losses. It is well known that a laminated core reduces eddy currents, while for motors with an outer rotor, it complicates the construction and increases weight. Thus, the question arises about the necessity to use a laminated core in a high power density motor and the real benefits of this. The article presents a comparison of the motors with a solid rotor core and a laminated rotor core, considering the value of rotor losses, power density factor, eff... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: 4WID electrical vehicle, active front steering, backstepping, direct yaw control, Model Predictive Control
A path following control strategy for a four-wheel-independent-drive electrical vehicle (4WID-EV) based on backstepping and model predictive control is presented, which can ensure the accuracy of path following and maintain vehicle stability simultaneously. Firstly, a 2-DOF vehicle dynamic model and a path following error model are built and the desired yaw rate is obtained through backstepping. Then, a model predictive controller is adopted to track the desired yaw rate and obtain the optimal front wheel steering and external yaw moment. Meanwhile, an optimal torque distribution algorithm is carried out to allocate it to each tire. Finally, the effectiveness and superiority of the strategy is validated via CarSim−Simulink joint simulation. Results show that the strategy has higher following accuracy, smaller sideslip angle, and better yaw rate tracking.

The need for energy-storing technologies with lower environmental impact than Li-ion batteries but similar power metrics has revived research in Zn-based battery chemistries. The application of bio-based materials as a replacement for current components can additionally contribute to an improved sustainability of Zn battery systems. For that reason, bacterial cellulose (BC) was investigated as separator material in Ni-Zn batteries. Following the biotechnological production of BC, the biopolymer was purified, and differently shaped separators were generated while surveying the alterations of its crystalline structure via X-ray diffraction measurements during the whole manufacturing process. A decrease in crystallinity and a partial change of the BC crystal allomorph type Iα to II was determined upon soaking in electrolyte. Electrolyte uptake was found to be accompanied by dimensional shrinkage and swelling, which was associated with partial decrystallization and hydration of the amorpho... [more]

Subject: Process Control
Keywords: controlled islanding, cyber security, emergency control, false data attack, phasor measurement units, uncertainty, wide-area control and stability
The widespread application of phasor measurement units has improved grid operational reliability. However, this has increased the risk of cyber threats such as false data injection attack that mislead time-critical measurements, which may lead to incorrect operator actions. While a single incorrect operator action might not result in a cascading failure, a series of actions impacting critical lines and transformers, combined with pre-existing faults or scheduled maintenance, might lead to widespread outages. To prevent cascading failures, controlled islanding strategies are traditionally implemented. However, islanding is effective only when the received data are trustworthy. This paper investigates two multi-objective controlled islanding strategies to accommodate data uncertainties under scenarios of lack of or partial knowledge of false data injection attacks. When attack information is not available, the optimization problem maximizes island observability using a minimum number of... [more]

Keywords: compressor station optimization, load sharing, salp swarm optimization algorithm, semi-continuous variable
In long-distance gas transmission pipelines, there are many booster compressor stations consisting of parallel compressors that provide pressure for the delivery of natural gas. So, it is economically important to optimize the operation of the booster compressor station. The booster compressor station optimization problem is a typical mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem, and solving it accurately and stably is a challenge. In this paper, we propose an improved salp swarm algorithm based on good point set, adaptive population division and adaptive inertia weight (GASSA) to solve this problem. In GASSA, three improvement strategies are utilized to enhance the global search capability of the algorithm and help the algorithm jump out of the local optimum. We also propose a constraint handling approach. By using semi-continuous variables, we directly describe the on or off state of the compressor instead of using auxiliary binary variables to reduce the number of variables a... [more]

Convolutional Neural Network Identification of Stall Flow Patterns in Pump−Turbine Runners
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: System Identification
Keywords: convolutional neural network, flow identification, pump–turbine, stall flow patterns
Stall flow patterns occur frequently in pump turbines under off-design operating conditions. These flow patterns may cause intensive pressure pulsations, sudden increases in the hydraulic forces of the runner, or other adverse consequences, and are some of the most notable subjects in the study of pump turbines. Existing methods for identifying stall flow patterns are not, however, sufficiently objective and accurate. In this study, a convolutional neural network (CNN) is built to identify and analyze stall flow patterns. The CNN consists of input, convolutional, downsampling, fully connected, and output layers. The runner flow field data from a model pump−turbine are simulated with three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics and part of the classifiable data are used to train and test the CNN. The testing results show that the CNN can predict whether or not a blade channel is stalled with an accuracy of 100%. Finally, the CNN is used to predict the flow status of the unclassifiable... The increasing use of high shares of renewable energy sources (RESs) in the current electricity network introduces challenges to the design and management of the electricity network due to the variation and uncertainty nature of the RESs. Some existing energy infrastructures, such as heat, gas, and transport, all have some level of inbuilt storage capacity and demand response (DR) potentials that can be exploited in an energy system integration to give the electricity network some level of flexibility and promote an efficient transition to a low-carbon, resilient, and robust energy system. The process of integrating different energy infrastructure is known as multi-vector energy systems (MESs). This paper reviews different studies on the planning of MESs using the energy hubs (EHs) approach.
