Frequency Control in Power Systems with Large Share of Wind Energy
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fast frequency response, grid-following control, grid-forming control, virtual synchronous machine control, wind power integration.
Fast frequency response from wind turbines and plants has been playing an increasingly important role in our modern power system, which has a large share of wind energy integration. Frequency control from grid-following wind turbines and plants has been extensively investigated in the literature, whereas grid-forming frequency control methods have aroused people’s attention in recent years, with relatively little comparison available. This paper provides such a comparison, illustrating the differences between the two methods of providing frequency support in a power system. The comparison shows the superiority of grid-forming frequency control methods over grid-following ones, and gives a glance into power system frequency stability in the transition from grid-following to grid-forming frequency support supplied by wind power. The results are elaborated in a benchmark WSCC 9-bus system, which features detailed electromagnetic transient modeling of the components from a single converter... [more]

Study on the Emission Reduction Effect and Spatial Difference of Carbon Emission Trading Policy in China
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: “double carbon” goal, carbon emission reduction, carbon emission trading policy, PSM-DID.
To cope with huge carbon emission pressure, China has implemented a carbon emissions trading pilot policy that aims to provide reasonable suggestions for the smooth operation of the national carbon market. This paper selects the provincial panel data in China from 2005 to 2019 and uses the propensity score matching-difference in difference (PSM-DID) method to evaluate the carbon emission policy’s reduction effect. Based on carbon emissions (CE) and carbon emission intensity (CI), provinces and cities are divided into four regions, and each region is verified by spatial difference analysis. Furthermore, the mediating effects of carbon emission reduction through the dual aspects of technological progress and industry structure are also discussed. Results verified that, (1) under the carbon emission trading policy, regional carbon emissions and carbon emission intensity are both significantly reduced. (2) Technological progress helps to reduce carbon emissions, while industrial structure... [more]

Metagenomic Analysis of the Long-Term Synergistic Effects of Antibiotics on the Anaerobic Digestion of Cattle Manure
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Biosystems
Keywords: anaerobic digestion, antibiotics, biodiversity, cattle manure, synergistic effect.
The conversion of cattle manure into biogas in anaerobic digestion (AD) processes has been gaining attention in recent years. However, antibiotic consumption continues to increase worldwide, which is why antimicrobial concentrations can be expected to rise in cattle manure and in digestate. This study examined the long-term synergistic effects of antimicrobials on the anaerobic digestion of cattle manure. The prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and changes in microbial biodiversity under exposure to the tested drugs was investigated using a metagenomic approach. Methane production was analyzed in lab-scale anaerobic bioreactors. Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria were the most abundant bacteria in the samples. The domain Archaea was represented mainly by methanogenic genera Methanothrix and Methanosarcina and the order Methanomassiliicoccales. Exposure to antibiotics inhibited the growth and development of methanogenic microorganisms in the substrate. Antibiotic... [more]

Multi-Agent-Based Coordinated Control of ABS and AFS for Distributed Drive Electric Vehicles
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: active front steering (AFS), anti-lock braking system (ABS), coordinated control, distributed drive electric vehicle, heterogeneous multi-agent.
A vehicle with a four-channel anti-lock braking system (ABS) has poor safety and stability when braking on a low-adhesion road or off-road. In view of this situation, this paper proposes a multi-objective optimization coordinated control method for ABS and AFS based on multi-agent model predictive control (MPC). Firstly, the single-wheel control method is adopted to establish the single-wheel equation based on the slip rate and the stability equation of the centroid yaw based on AFS. The four wheels and the centroid are regarded as agents. The mathematical model of distributed drive electric vehicles based on graph theory and the coordinated control of AFS and ABS is established to reduce the dimension of the model. Secondly, on the basis of the multi-agent theory, an integrated coordinated control method for AFS and ABS based on distributed model predictive control (DMPC) is proposed to realize the ideal values of the vehicle’s slip rate, yaw rate, and sideslip angle, and improve the... Using Energy-Absorbing Dampers to Solve the Problem of Large Deformation in Soft-Rock Tunnels: A Case Study
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: energy principle, energy-absorbing dampers, large deformation control, mountain tunnel, soft rock.
The commonly used strength design concept of tunnel support structures is inadequate to address the large deformation of soft rock. This study designed a series of energy-absorbing dampers (EDs) with low stiffness and high deformation capacity based on the energy principle. The ED was directly installed on the steel arch, which used its compression deformation to release the surrounding rock pressure and absorb the surrounding rock deformation to ensure the stability of the initial support structure. A compression test analyzed the ED’s mechanical properties, optimizing the structural parameters. The preliminary test results showed that the arc energy-absorbing damper’s (AED-I) peak strength (15.33 Mpa) was lower than the standard compressive strength of C25 shotcrete, with a safety factor of 1.63. The AED-I’s maximum compression ratio was 73.20%. To further improve the AED-I’s reliability and ability to absorb the deformation of surrounding rock, the bending radius of the AED-I’s ener... Combustion Performance and Low NOx Emissions of a Dimethyl Ether Compression-Ignition Engine at High Injection Pressure and High Exhaust Gas Recirculation Rate
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combustion process, Dimethyl Ether, exhaust gas recirculation, nitrogen oxides.
Dimethyl ether (DME) is a promising alternative to diesel for compression-ignition (CI) engines used in various industrial applications. However, the high nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions of DME combustion have restricted its use. The primary cause of high NOx emissions is a high combustion temperature. In this study, a high exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) rate was used when testing a common-rail direct injection CI engine suitable (with minor modifications) for a passenger car. A modified fuel supply system created high injection pressure during evaluation of combustion performance. The physical and chemical properties of DME were the principal determinants of the ignition delay, combustion speed, and heat release rate. Although a high injection pressure accelerated formation of the fuel-air mixture and the combustion speed, combustion performance deteriorated with increased NOx emissions. An increased EGR rate affected combustion and the NOx concentration. A high EGR rate effectively r... [more]

Advances in Power Quality Analysis Techniques for Electrical Machines and Drives: A Review
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: electrical drives, electrical machines, Energy Efficiency, energy-saving, induction motor, power quality.
The electric machines are the elements most used at an industry level, and they represent the major power consumption of the productive processes. Particularly speaking, among all electric machines, the motors and their drives play a key role since they literally allow the motion interchange in the industrial processes; it could be said that they are the medullar column for moving the rest of the mechanical parts. Hence, their proper operation must be guaranteed in order to raise, as much as possible, their efficiency, and, as consequence, bring out the economic benefits. This review presents a general overview of the reported works that address the efficiency topic in motors and drives and in the power quality of the electric grid. This study speaks about the relationship existing between the motors and drives that induces electric disturbances into the grid, affecting its power quality, and also how these power disturbances present in the electrical network adversely affect, in turn,... March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: deflection magnet, design optimization, heat transfer performance, neutral beam injection, thermal-fluid-structure coupling.
The deflection magnet (DM) is the most important component of the Neutral Beam Injection (NBI) system of Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST), which can magnetically deflect the un-neutralized charged particles after the neutralized process of the beam is extracted from the ion source, and then form a neutral beam injected into the tokamak. Under the operating conditions of the NBI system, by using the thermocouple monitoring system in the experiment, it can be found that the currently operating DM beam collimator has a quite high temperature rise. It is necessary to redesign the DM beam collimator to improve its heat transfer performance. The parallel arrangement of multiple rows of tubes is proposed as the basic method for the redesign of the beam collimator of DM, the thermal-fluid-structure analysis model of this redesign model is established and its temperature field, pressure field and stress field are analyzed. Taking the surface temperature of the beam collimato... [more]

Numerical Modeling of the Hydrodynamic Performance of Slanted Axial-Flow Urban Drainage Pumps at Shut-Off Condition
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: dynamic mesh, hydrodynamic performance, shut-off condition, slanted axial-flow pump, sluice gate.
Increasing extreme rainfall events caused by global climate change have had a significant impact on urban drainage systems. As a critical component of a pumping station, a large-scale slanted axial-flow pump (SAFP) featuring high specific speed plays a critical role in mitigating urban flooding and waterlogging. In this study, to reveal the transient characteristics of a SAFP at shut-off conditions, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) based approach with dynamic mesh was proposed. Multiple shut-off conditions with various shut-down speeds of the sluice gate (SG) were modeled. Our analysis demonstrated that both the shut-off conditions and the slanted structure have conspicuous impacts on the hydrodynamic performance of a SAFP. Reducing the shut-down speed leads to a greater reverse flow rate and higher runner speed. The water hammer effect was simulated with different shut-down speeds, increasing the water head by 5.07−10.42 m, the axial force by 163.46−297.06 kN∙m, and the axial mome... [more]

Study on Combustion Characteristics of Cable Based on Cone Calorimeter
March 2, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: cable, cone calorimeter, HRR, ignition time, XLPE.
Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) carries a high fire risk. In this paper, a cone calorimeter is used to carry out radiation ignition experiments, and the heat release rate (HRR), mass loss rate (MLR) and other combustion parameters of XLPE cables under three kinds of radiation intensity are measured. By comparing the ignition time and HRR of samples under different conditions, the following conclusions are drawn: (1) The ignition time of XLPE cables decreases significantly with the increase in external thermal radiation intensity. The critical ignition heat flux (CHF) is about 16.24 kW/m2. (2) The HRR curve of XLPE is consistent with the characteristics of hot, thick material. The HRR rises rapidly to the first peak after ignition and then rapidly decreases. Then, it slowly rises to the second peak. Finally, it slowly decays until the combustion stops. (3) The first peak values of HRR of XLPE under different radiation intensities are almost the same. The time for the second peak of HRR... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: DDPM-KTGF, erosion modelling, erosion reduction, gas–solid two-phase flow, Rosin–Rammler distribution.
The purpose of the present study is to simulate the continuous bend erosion process in different directions, using the dense discrete particle model (DDPM). The influence of the length of the straight pipe in the middle of the continuous bend is investigated. The Rosin−Rammler method is introduced to define the diameter distribution of erosion particles, which is theoretically closer to the actual engineering erosion situation. The numerical model is based on the Euler−Lagrange method, in which the continuous phase and the particle phase are established on a fixed Euler grid. The Lagrange model is used to track the particles, and the interaction between particles is simulated by particle flow mechanics theory. The velocity field distribution, pressure variation, and turbulent kinetic energy of gas−solid two-phase flow, composed of natural gas and gravel in the pipeline, are studied. The simulation results, using the one-way coupled DPM and the four-way coupled DDPM, are compared and an... [more]

Subject: Energy Policy
Keywords: electricity–development nexus, policy and regulation, rural electrification, Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), system dynamics, Tanzania.
As it emerges from the literature, electricity access in rural contexts is deeply intertwined with socioeconomic dynamics. However, the advent of a reliable and sufficient source of electricity is not the sole driver that might contribute to local development. Indeed, complementary activities might have a crucial role in sustaining the development of rural communities as well as the electricity access. The current research addresses the lack of counterfactual scenarios in which the impact of complementary activities on electrification projects can be investigated. The authors introduce the case study of Matembwe village, a rural community in the Njombe region of Tanzania. The data collection includes the electricity consumption, number of electricity connections, and number of income-generating activities in a timespan ranging from 1989 to 2015. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: average behavioral model, charge pump dynamics, circuit modeling, DC–DC converter, Dickson charge pump, energy harvesting, resistor network, steady-state analysis.
This paper presents a new average behavioral model, named a resistor-network (RN) model, that accurately predicts the electrical characteristics of the Dickson charge pump (DCP) circuit in the slow-switching limit and the fast-switching limit regions based on steady-state analysis. The RN model describes the steady-state behavior of a single-stage DCP using a network of resistors, which can then be cascaded to model N-stage DCP, taking into account the top- and bottom-plate parasitic capacitances. The RN model provides a comprehensive insight into various design parameters of the DCP, including the input/output current, output voltage, load characteristics, losses caused by parasitics, and power efficiency. Simulation results show that the proposed RN model accurately predicts the output voltage and power efficiency of the DCP over a wide range of switching frequencies, from 0.1 Hz to 1 GHz, with an error of less than 2% at the maximum power efficiency.
