Impact of Time-Use Behaviour on Residential Energy Consumption in the United Kingdom

In order to have the best possible chance of achieving ‘decent work’ and ‘climate action’ as laid forth in the UN Sustainable Development Goals, government and policy makers must pay close attention to current time-use patterns, as well as the way these might change in the near future. Here we contribute to the existing literature on time-use behaviour through a systematic exploration of the relationship between working patterns and energy consumption from the perspective of time-use. Our starting point is the premise that different work arrangements impact the timing of energy demand not only in workplaces, but also at home. Enhancing Stability and Robustness of State-of-Charge Estimation for Lithium-Ion Batteries by Using Improved Adaptive Kalman Filter Algorithms

The traditional Kalman filter algorithms have disadvantages of poor stability (the program cannot converge or crash), robustness (sensitive to the initial errors) and accuracy, partially resulted from the fact that noise covariance matrices in the algorithms need to be set artificially. To overcome the above problems, some adaptive Kalman filter (AKF) algorithms are studied, but the problems still remain unsolved. In this study, two improved AKF algorithms, the improved Sage-Husa and innovation-based adaptive estimation (IAE) algorithms, are proposed. Under the different operating conditions, the estimation accuracy, filter stability, and robustness of the two proposed algorithms are analyzed. Fault Diagnosis Method for Wind Turbine Gearboxes Based on IWOA-RF

A fault diagnosis method for wind turbine gearboxes based on undersampling, XGBoost feature selection, and improved whale optimization-random forest (IWOA-RF) was proposed for the problem of high false negative and false positive rates in wind turbine gearboxes. Numerical Simulation of Leakage and Diffusion Process of LNG Storage Tanks

To investigate the evolution process of LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) liquid pool and gas cloud diffusion, the Realizable k-ε model and Eluerian model were used to numerically simulate the liquid phase leakage and diffusion process of LNG storage tanks. The experimental results showed that some LNG flashed and vaporized rapidly to form a combustible cloud during the continuous leakage. The diffusion of the explosive cloud was divided into heavy gas accumulation, entrainment heat transfer, and light gas drift. The vapor cloud gradually separated into two parts from the whole “fan leaf shape”. One part was a heavy gas cloud; the other part was a light gas cloud that spread with the wind in the downwind direction. The change of leakage aperture had a greater impact on the whole spill and dispersion process of the storage tank. Experimental Characterization of Lithium-Ion Cell Strain Using Laser Sensors

The characterization of thickness change during operation of LFP/Graphite prismatic batteries is presented in this work. In this regard, current rate dependence, hysteresis behaviour between charge and discharge and correlation with phase changes are deepened. Experimental tests are carried out with a battery testing equipment correlated with optical laser sensors to evaluate swelling. Furthermore, thickness change is computed analytically with a mathematical model based on lattice parameters of the crystal structures of active materials. Changes in Electricity Production from Renewable Energy Sources in the European Union Countries in 2005−2019

One of the targets set for 2050 is to increase the share of electricity in energy consumption to 50%, and 80% of electricity is to be generated from low-carbon sources. In recent years, the EU economies have significantly modified their electricity production, which raises the question of the scale of these changes. The aim of the presented analysis is to assess changes in the use of renewable sources for electricity production in the EU countries in 2005−2019. Liquid Propane Injection in Flash-Boiling Conditions

This study aimed to investigate the influence of flash-boiling conditions on liquid propane sprays formed by a multi-hole injector at various injection pressures. The focus was on spray structures, which were analysed qualitatively and quantitatively by means of spray-tip penetration and global spray angle. The effect of flash boiling was evaluated in terms of trends observed for subcooled conditions. Propane was injected by a commercial gasoline direct injector into a constant volume vessel filled with nitrogen at pressures from 0.1 MPa up to 6 MPa. Forecasting for Battery Storage: Choosing the Error Metric

We describe our approach to the Western Power Distribution (WPD) Presumed Open Data (POD) 6 MWh battery storage capacity forecasting competition, in which we finished second. The competition entails two distinct forecasting aims to maximise the daily evening peak reduction and using as much solar photovoltaic energy as possible. For the latter, we combine a Bayesian (MCMC) linear regression model with an average generation distribution. For the former, we introduce a new error metric that allows even a simple weighted average combined with a simple linear regression model to score very well using the competition performance metric.

Management of Waste Batteries and Accumulators: Quest of European Union Goals

Review of Potential Energy Storage in Abandoned Mines in Poland

Poland has had a total of 70 mines, but now more than half of them is out of operation. This mining closure raises with respect to the environment and unemployment. Innovative technology is needed to overcome the problems that arise and could simultaneously make use of abandoned mine infrastructure. The increased electricity generation coming from renewable energy, which produces fluctuating and intermittent energy for the electric power system, causes frequency problems such that energy storage technologies are needed. Abandoned mines can be used for the implementation of energy storage plants. This paper explores the possibility of using abandoned mines in Poland for electrical energy storage. Closed mines can be used to store clean and flexible energy. This idea has the potential to support sustainable economic development within the community following mine closure in Poland.

Application Properties of ZnO and AZO Thin Films Obtained by the ALD Method

The thin layers of ZnO and ZnO: Al (Al doped zinc oxide—AZO) were deposited by the atomic deposition layer (ALD) method on silicon and glass substrates. The structures were deposited using diethylzinc (DEZ) and deionized water as zinc and oxygen precursors. A precursor of trimethylaluminum (TMA) was used to introduce the aluminum dopant. The present study of ALD-deposited ZnO and AZO films was motivated by their applications in photovoltaics. We attempted to expose several properties of such films. Structural, optical (including ellipsometric measurements) and electrical investigations were performed. Influence of Cavitation in Common-Rail Diesel Nozzles on the Soot Formation Process through Measuring Soot Emissions

The influence of cavitation in common-rail diesel nozzles on the soot formation process has been analysed experimentally. The soot formation process was characterized by measuring soot emissions in a single-cylinder engine, which was mounted on a test bench equipped with an opacimeter. In order to do this, operating conditions where the soot oxidation process was equivalent were chosen, whereby differences in the soot formation process were possible to be analysed. The results achieved confirm that cavitation provokes a soot formation process reduction. This reduction can be attributed by combining results of three effects: a reduction of the effective diameter, an increase in effective injection velocity, and an increase in turbulence level inside the nozzle orifice leading to a longer lift-off length. The three effects lead to a decrease in relative fuel/air ratio at the lift-off, therefore explaining the soot formation reduction.

Distributed Finite-Time Secondary Frequency and Voltage Restoration Control Scheme of an Islanded AC Microgrid

To solve the problems of frequency and voltage deviation caused by the droop control while meeting the requirements of rapid response, a distributed finite-time secondary control scheme is presented. Feasibility Analysis of a DC Distribution System for a 6 kW Photovoltaic Installation in Ireland

Recent developments in micro-grids have led to increased interest in DC distribution due to its high efficiency in distributing energy from renewable energy sources to DC loads. This paper seeks to analyse the performance of AC and DC systems in a relatively large-sized 6 kW PV installation to determine the level of improvement in efficiency provided by DC distribution and to identify methods for further improvement. Baseline annual data for the AC system were collected from a live installation on a national school in Inis Oirr, an island off the west coast of Ireland. This article firstly provides a brief review on these emerging approaches. Based on the overview, a life cycle impact of these methods for recovering major component from one functional unit (FU) of 1 t spent EV LIBs was estimated. Our results showed that in-situ RR exhibited the lowest energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of 4833 MJ FU−1 and 1525 kg CO2-eq FU−1, respectively, which only accounts for ~23% and ~64% of those for the hydrometallurgical method with citric acid leaching.
