Numerical Analysis of Minimum Ground Temperature for Heat Extraction in Horizontal Ground Heat Exchangers
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: ground heat exchanger, ground temperature, heat extraction, heat pump
In this work, numerical simulation calculations were performed to investigate the minimum ground temperature that occurs when extracting thermal energy in a horizontal ground heat exchanger system in the Central European climate. The influence of ground thermal conductivity, heat flux extracted from the ground, periodic interruptions in the operation of the heat exchanger, periodic supply of heat energy to the ground, relative humidity of the ambient air, evaporation rate coefficient, and convective heat transfer coefficient on the ground minimum temperature were investigated. Based on the simulation, it was found that the high value of ground thermal conductivity favorably affects the operation of the installation with a ground heat exchanger. Both the reduction of the maximum heat flux taken from the ground, as well as periodic interruptions in the operation of the exchanger effectively protects the ground against excessive cooling. Further, it was found that heat supply to the groun... [more]

Design and Modeling of Metallic Bipolar Plates for a Fuel Cell Range Extender
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, design, flow field, fuel cell, metallic plate
Fuel cells, designed for mobile applications, should feature compact and low-weight designs. This study describes a design process that fulfills the specific needs of target applications and the production process. The key challenge for this type of metallic bipolar plate is that the combination of two plates creates three flow fields, namely an anode side, a cathode side, and a coolant. This illustrates the fact that each cell constitutes an electrochemical converter with an integrated heat exchanger. The final arrangement is comprised of plates with parallel and separate serpentine channel configurations. The anode and cathode sides are optimized for operation under dry conditions. The final plate offers an almost perfect distribution of coolant flow over the active area. The high quality of this distribution is almost independent of the coolant mass flow, even if one of the six inlet channels is blocked. The software employed (OpenFOAM and SALOME) is freely available and can be used... [more]

DCM Boost PFC for High Brightness LED Driver Applications
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: AC-DC conversion, boost converter, DCM, LED driver, PFC
This paper is concerned with the derivation of a discontinuous conduction mode boost PFC rectifier as a driver for high-power LED lighting applications. The proposed driver is operated in the current mode regime while emulating a resistance towards the line, thus attaining a near unity power factor and low total harmonic distortion of the line current. Theoretical analysis is reported and conditions for the low LED flicker are derived. A method of design for minimum THD is also suggested. Simulation and experimental results are reported.

Numerical Analysis of Mixed Convective Heat Transfer from a Square Cylinder Utilizing Nanofluids with Multi-Phase Modelling Approach
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: bluff body, heated square cylinder, mixed convection, mixture model, nanofluids
The present study deals with the numerical simulation of mixed convective heat transfer from an unconfined heated square cylinder using nanofluids (Al2O3-water) for Reynolds number (Re) 10−150, Richardson number (Ri) 0−1, and nanoparticles volume fractions (φ) 0−5%. Two-phase modelling approach (i.e., Eulerian-mixture model) is adopted to analyze the flow and heat transfer characteristics of nanofluids. A square cylinder with a constant temperature higher than that of the ambient is exposed to a uniform flow. The governing equations are discretized and solved by using a finite volume method employing the SIMPLE algorithm for pressure−velocity coupling. The thermo-physical properties of nanofluids are calculated from the theoretical models using a single-phase approach. The flow and heat transfer characteristics of nanofluids are studied for considered parameters and compared with those of the base fluid. The temperature field and flow structure around the square cylinder are visualized... [more]

Value Proposition of Different Methods for Utilisation of Sugarcane Wastes
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: bioenergy, Ethanol, mill mud, sugarcane wastes, utilisation, value proposition
There are four main waste products produced during the harvesting and milling process of sugarcane: cane trash, molasses, bagasse and mill mud−boiler ash mixture. This study investigates the value proposition of different techniques currently not being adopted by the industry in the utilisation of these wastes. The study addresses the technical challenges and the environmental impact associated with these wastes and comes up with some recommendations based on the recent findings in the literature. All the biomass wastes such as bagasse, trash (tops) and trash (leaves) have shown great potential in generating higher revenue by converting them to renewable energy than burning them (wet or dry). However, the energy content in the products from all the utilisation methods is less than the energy content of the raw product. This study has found that the most profitable and challenging choice is producing ethanol or ethanol/biogas from these wastes. The authors recommend conducting more rese... [more]

Aging Behavior of Lithium Titanate Battery under High-Rate Discharging Cycle
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: aging mechanisms, cycle life, high-rate discharging, lithium titanate battery
The high-rate discharging performance of a lithium titanate battery is one of its main properties. In conditions that require ultra-high-rate discharging, a lithium titanate battery can be discharged continuously at a current of 50 C (50 times of its maximum capacity) or higher. In this paper, we take cylindrical steel shell lithium titanate cells as the research object and perform aging cycles at 66 C on these cells. The ultra-high-rate discharging cycles cause a rapid high-power capacity fading while the available capacity at normal current rate is not affected. The capacity at 66 C decreases to 80% of initial value in 10 cycles. This paper also analyzes the aging process of a lithium titanate battery at high-rate discharging with incremental capacity (IC) analysis, and presents the aging behavior of lithium titanate battery qualitatively, which is inconsistent with existing research. We attribute the aging mechanism of ultra-high-rate discharging cycles to the decrease of ionic mobi... [more]

Establishment of a Real-Time Simulation of a Marine High-Pressure Common Rail System
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: closed-loop control, high-pressure common rail, marine diesel engine, real-time simulation model
In this paper, the high-pressure common rail system of the marine diesel engine is taken as case study to establish a real-time simulation model of the high-pressure common rail system that can be used as the controlled object of the control system. On the premise of ensuring accuracy, the real-time simulation should also respond quickly to instructions issued by the control system. The development of the real-time simulation is based on the modular modeling method, and the high-pressure common rail system is divided into submodels, including the high-pressure oil pump, common rail tube, injector, and mass conversion. The submodels are built using the “surrogate model” method, which is mainly composed of MAP data and empirical formulas. The data used to establish the real-time simulation are not only from the empirical research into the high-pressure common rail system, but also from simulations of the high-pressure common rail system undertaken in AEMSim. Applying Solar PV to Heat Pump and Storage Technologies in Australian Houses
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: heat pumps, self-consumption, solar photovoltaics, space cooling, space heating, thermal storage
Innovative mechanical services coupled with renewable energy systems are crucial for achieving a net zero energy goal for houses. Conventional systems tend to be vastly oversized because they lack the means to buffer energy flows and are based on peak loads. This paper presents an approach to achieve a net zero energy goal for houses by using a solar PV system, heat pumps, and thermal and electrical storage batteries, all off-the-shelf. Constraining one part of the system and then showing how to manage energy storage and flow is a paradigm shift in sizing. The design is for a modest-sized house built in Melbourne, Australia. The output of a solar photovoltaic array drives a small-scale heat pump to heat water, buffering its energy in a thermal battery to energise a radiant space heating system. Space cooling is provided by a separate heat pump. Through energy storage in electrical and thermal batteries, it is possible to meet the electricity, heating and cooling needs of the house for... March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: biochemical analysis, biogas, Biomass, combustion, curly-leaf pondweed, elemental analysis, energy use, lake restoration, proximate analysis
The possibilities of using curly-leaf pondweed for energy purposes were analyzed. This plant contributes to overgrowth of water reservoirs, causing their eutrophication. The plants examined were from two different water reservoirs: Lake Winiary (Gniezno) and Lake Rusalka (Poznan). On the basis of the investigations, it was determined that it is possible to use curly-leaf pondweed for energy purposes, both in the combustion method and in the biomethane fermentation process. Studies were performed to assess the suitability of the plants for combustion as a solid biofuel and studies on the use of pondweed as a fermenter feedstock. The calorimetric study showed the possibility of obtaining more energy for the curly-leaf pondweed coming from Lake Rusalka. The heat of combustion of these plants was 13.95 MJ·kg−1 (Winiary pondweed) and 9.10 MJ·kg−1 (Rusalka pondweed). On the other hand, the calorific value of these plants was 12.60 MJ·kg−1 (Winiary pondweed) and 7.80 MJ·kg−1 (Rusalka pondweed... [more]

March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Materials
Keywords: energy geostructures, ground-source heat pumps, heat transfer, soil characterization, thermal conductivity
The thermal conductivity of soils is a fundamental parameter for the design of ground-source heat pump systems (GSHPs) and energy geostructures. This paper presents a comprehensive evaluation of the physical, mineralogical, and thermal characteristics of typical coastal soils from Tabasco, Mexico. Twenty-five soil samples from four different strata were studied using the thermal needle probe method, X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, and standard geotechnical soil classification tests. The results showed a significant correlation between the dry density and porosity with the thermal conductivity of the studied samples, which ranged between 1.17 and 2.32 W m−1 K−1. The performed statistical analyses indicated that coarse-grained soils had larger thermal conductivities and higher variability than fine-grained soils. Additionally, the performance of six models to estimate the thermal conductivity of soils was validated against the experimental data. All models provided ac... [more]

Optimal Sizing of Energy Storage System for Operation of Wind Farms Considering Grid-Code Constraints
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: grid-code constraints, Optimization, sizing of energy storage system, wind farm operation
Transmission system operators impose several grid-code constraints on large-scale wind farms to ensure power system stability. These constraints may reduce the net profit of the wind farm operators due to their inability to sell all the power. The violation of these constraints also results in an imposition of penalties on the wind farm operators. Therefore, an operation strategy is developed in this study for optimizing the operation of wind farms using an energy storage system. This facilitates wind farms in fulfilling all the grid-code constraints imposed by the transmission system operators. Specifically, the limited power constraint and the reserve power constraint are considered in this study. In addition, an optimization algorithm is developed for optimal sizing of the energy storage system, which reduces the total operation and investment costs of wind farms. All parameters affecting the size of the energy storage systems are also analyzed in detail. This analysis allows the wi... [more]

Application of ORC in a Distributed Integrated Energy System Driven by Deep and Shallow Geothermal Energy
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: distributed integrated energy system, efficiency improvement, geothermal energy, heat pump, ORC
This study presents a distributed integrated energy system driven by deep and shallow geothermal energy based on forward and reverse cycle for flexible generation of cold, heat and electricity in different scenarios. By adjusting the strategy, the system can meet the demand of heat-electricity in winter, cool-electricity in summer and electricity in transition seasons. The thermodynamic analysis shows that the thermal efficiency of the integrated energy system in the heating and power generation mode is 16% higher than that in the cooling and power generation mode or the single power generation mode. Meanwhile, the annual heat-obtaining quantity of the system is reduced by 11% compared with that of the independent power generation system, which effectively alleviates the imbalance of the temperature field of the shallow geothermal reservoir. In terms of net power generation, the integrated energy system can generate approximately 31% more electricity than the conventional independent c... [more]

Separation of the Mixture 2-Propanol + Water by Heterogeneous Azeotropic Distillation with Isooctane as an Entrainer
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: 2-propanol, alcohols, azeotropes, Biofuels, dehydration, heterogeneous azeotropic distillation, isooctane, Water
Advanced processes, which are alternatives to ordinary distillation, are essential to dehydrate azeotropic alcoholic mixtures for biofuel production. In that regard, this work focuses on the analysis of heterogeneous azeotropic distillation for the separation of a 2-propanol + water mixture in order to recover the alcohol with a sufficiently low water content. By comparing the performances of various entrainers on the basis of ternary maps, isooctane was selected for further process analysis. An advantage it poses is related to the fact that traces of it within the recovered dehydrated alcohol are highly welcome with a view to its subsequent use as a fuel. Aspen Plus® V11 software was employed for the simulation of the process, thus filling the gap existing in the literature due to the lack of studies on the process analysis of the heterogeneous azeotropic distillation of the 2-propanol + water system using isooctane as an entrainer.

Noise Reduction Design with Trapezoidal Back-EMF and Asymmetric Air-Gap for Single-Phase BLDC Refrigerator Cooling Fan Motor
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: asymmetric air-gap, claw-pole motor, fast Fourier transform, noise reduction design, single-phase BLDC motor, trapezoidal back-EMF
In this study, a novel method for reducing the noise generated by single-phase claw-pole motors employed as refrigerator fan blowers is proposed. A single-phase claw-pole motor has the advantages of low manufacturing cost, easy manufacturing, and a high number of turns. However, in such motors, current delays occur owing to a high inductance; therefore, it is necessary to merge the back-electromotive force and current phases into the same phase using the phase advance method. Additionally, a single-phase motor exhibits dead torque and zero torque at an electrical angle of 180° owing to its electrical characteristics, and the dead torque deteriorates the average torque and torque ripple characteristics of the motor. In this study, a novel method is proposed to make the air gap asymmetrical by tilting the claw to reduce the noise generated by single-phase claw-pole motors. An asymmetric air gap allows the cogging torque to eliminate the dead torque caused by alignment torques, causing th... [more]

Analysis of Expected Skin Burns from Accepted Process Flare Heat Radiation Levels to Public Passersby
March 9, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Modelling, natural gas flaring, passersby, radiant heat exposure, skin burns
Hot flaring, even from quite high flare stacks, may result in significant heat radiation outside a facility to, e.g., public roads where random passersby may be exposed. The present study suggests a novel method for analyzing a typical flare heat radiation exposure and investigates skin burns that may be inflicted on an exposed person if a facility needs to depressurize in an emergency situation. A typical radiation field from an ignited natural gas vent was taken as the boundary condition, and these values were compared to radiation levels mentioned by the American Petroleum Institute (API 521), e.g., 1.58 kW/m2 and above. Due to facility perimeter fences along roads in larger industry areas, it was assumed that an exposed person may flee along a road rather than in the ideal direction away from the flare. It was assumed that naked skin, e.g., a bare shoulder or a bald head is exposed. The Pennes bioheat equation was numerically solved for the skin layers while the person escapes alon... [more]

Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: 4D, Carbon Dioxide, EOR, monitoring, sequestration, time lapse, WAG
We present the current status of time-lapse seismic integration at the Farnsworth (FWU) CO2 WAG (water-alternating-gas) EOR (Enhanced Oil Recovery) project at Ochiltree County, northwest Texas. As a potential carbon sequestration mechanism, CO2 WAG projects will be subject to some degree of monitoring and verification, either as a regulatory requirement or to qualify for economic incentives. In order to evaluate the viability of time-lapse seismic as a monitoring method the Southwest Partnership (SWP) has conducted time-lapse seismic monitoring at FWU using the 3D Vertical Seismic Profiling (VSP) method. The efficacy of seismic time-lapse depends on a number of key factors, which vary widely from one application to another. Most important among these are the thermophysical properties of the original fluid in place and the displacing fluid, followed by the petrophysical properties of the rock matrix, which together determine the effective elastic properties of the rock fluid system. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: adaptive control, electric drive, nonlinear control, two-mass system
In numerous electric drive applications, the mechanical phenomena in the velocity or position control loop determine real difficulties and challenges for the control system. So-called two-mass drive systems with a flexible shaft are the most important example of this situation. The problem becomes even more difficult if the characteristics of torque transmission along the shaft are nonlinear, nonlinear friction is present, and the plant parameters are unknown, as it happens in numerous robotic systems. A novel adaptive controller is derived for such a system. The recurrent design procedure is based on proper modifications of the adaptive backstepping scheme, including non-strict-feedback plant application, tuning functions to exclude controller overparameterization, robust adaptive laws, proper means to avoid controller complexity explosion, and a nonlinear PI controller in the initial loop to minimize quasi-steady-state tracking error. Subject: Materials
Keywords: chemical kinetic modeling, e-fuels, ignition delay time, laminar burning velocity, lean premixed prevaporized
To reach sustainable aviation, one approach is to use electro-fuels (e-fuels) within the gas turbine engines. E-fuels are CO2-neutral synthetic fuels which are produced employing electrical energy generated from renewable resources, where the carbon is taken out of the atmosphere or from biomass. Our approach is, to find e-fuels, which can be utilized in the lean premixed prevaporized (LPP) combustion, where most of the non-CO2 emissions are prevented. One of the suitable e-fuel classes is alcohols with a low number of carbons. In this work, the autoignition properties of propanol isomers and butanol isomers as e-fuels were investigated in a high-pressure shock tube (HPST) at temperatures from 1200 to 1500 K, the pressure of 10 bar, and lean fuel-air conditions. Additional investigations on the low-temperature oxidation and flame speed of C3 and C4 alcohols from the literature were employed to develop a comprehensive mechanism for the prediction of ignition delay time (IDT) and laminar... In this study, shale cores from 20 wells in the S1l11-1 sublayer of Longmaxi Formation buried in shallow shale (3500 m) in the southern Sichuan Basin, China were collected to compare their pore structures and gas-bearing properties using multiple experiments. Results showed that the deep layer has relatively lower brittle mineral content, which is disadvantageous in terms of the higher requirements it imposes on hydraulic fracturing. Results also showed that the most important factor controlling the differential enrichment of S1l11-1 shale gas in southern Sichuan Basin is porosity. Moreover, the porosity composition of shallow shale and deep shale has significant differences: the porosity of shallow shale is dominated by organic pores, while for deep shale, both organic and inorganic pores are important. The inorganic pores provide significant storage space for free gas in deep shale; their contribution warrants more attention. We also found that the difference in organic porosity of t... [more]

Special Economic Zones (SEZs), an important engine of industrial economic development in China, consume large amounts of energy resources and emit considerable CO2. However, existing research pays little attention to industrial energy usage in SEZs and ignores the heterogeneity of administrative hierarchy and regional location. Considering the dual heterogeneity, this study proposes an improved two-dimension and two-level meta-frontier data envelopment analytical model to decompose the industrial electricity efficiency (IEE) and electricity-saving potential of SEZs in Guizhou Province, China, based on 4-year field survey data (2016−2019). Results show that the IEE rankings of three administrative hierarchies within SEZs are provincial administration SEZs, county administration SEZs, and municipality administration SEZs. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: accurate modelling, modelling of ring induction motors, Monte Carlo method
This paper proposes a procedure for the accurate modelling of the ring induction motors (RIMs), based on the Monte Carlo (MC) method and the relations presented in the relevant metrology guidelines. Modelling was carried out based on the measured data for the torque-slip characteristic (TSC) and using the equivalent circuit for the RIM. The parameters included an extended Kloss equation (EKE) and the associated uncertainties were determined using the MC method. The polynomial procedure was applied as a numerical tool to complement the MC method to determine the power losses in the stator iron and the relevant uncertainty. This is in line with international standards for the theory of uncertainty application in the field of engineering. The novelty of this paper refers to the accurate modelling of the RIMs obtained by determining the corresponding uncertainties. The procedure presented in this paper was developed based on the assumption that the parameters of the equivalent circuit are... [more]
