A Sliding Mode Control Strategy with Repetitive Sliding Surface for Shunt Active Power Filter with an LCLCL Filter
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: fast exponential power reaching law, harmonic current compensation, LCLCL filter, plugin-repetitive sliding mode control (RCSMC), repetitive control (RC), SAPF, sliding mode control (SMC)
This paper proposes a novel sliding mode control (SMC) scheme with a repetitive sliding surface for shunt active power filters (SAPF) to enhance the system robustness and eliminate harmonic current tracking errors. Traditional control schemes, such as PI control, repetitive control (RC), proportional resonance control (PR), improve the stability of the SAPF in the stable grid to a certain extent. However, the robustness of the SAPF control system has not been improved. In this paper, the SMC is applied to SAPF, and a sliding mode controller is constructed by using a linear sliding mode surface composed of the system state variables and a fast exponential power-reaching law, which can effectively enhance the system robustness. When the grid parameters change or external disturbances exist, sliding surface drift and sliding mode chattering will occur. Although fast-tracking of the harmonic current can still be achieved, it is difficult to accurately compensate AC harmonic current. Moreov... [more]

Energy Implications of Lot Sizing Decisions in Refrigerated Warehouses
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: cold chain, economic order quantity, inventory management, refrigerated warehouse
Cold supply chains (CSCs) are responsible for preserving the quality of perishable goods in storage and transport. They consume significant amounts of energy to maintain cooling temperatures constant over time continuously and ubiquitously, which is affected by the surrounding environment and the users’ behavior. The storage filling level is one specific feature of refrigerated warehouses observed in practice: they are more energy efficient when kept full of items, reducing the space that air occupies. Inventory management models that consider energy consumption have received increasing attention recently due to an increase in stakeholders’ awareness of sustainability. Despite this interest, there is no work that jointly considers the effects of the filling level and the temperature inside the warehouse. This study, therefore, integrates those aspects into the economic order quantity model and finds the optimal lot size quantity that minimizes the total system cost, which is the perfor... [more]

Optimal Design of a Stand-Alone Residential Hybrid Microgrid System for Enhancing Renewable Energy Deployment in Japan
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
This paper aims at the optimal designing of a stand-alone microgrid (PV/wind/battery/diesel) system, which can be utilized to meet the demand load requirements of a small residential area in Kasuga City, Fukuoka. The simulation part is developed to estimate the electrical power generated by each component, taking into account the variation of the weather parameters, such as wind, solar irradiation, and ambient temperature. The optimal system design is then based on the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) method to find the optimal configuration of the proposed system, using the least-cost perspective approach.

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: condition monitoring, insulation, online monitoring, partial discharge (PD), pre-emptive, sensors
Partial discharge (PD) measurements have proved their reliability for health monitoring of insulation systems in power system components including synchronous generators, power transformers, switchgear and cables etc. Online condition monitoring and pro-active detection of PD faults have been highly demanded over the last two decades. This paper provides results from a research project to develop advanced non-intrusive sensing technologies that are cost effective, reliable and efficient for early detection of PD faults in medium voltage (MV) and high voltage (HV) air-insulated switchgear. Three sensors (high frequency E-field (D-dot) sensor, Rogowski coil and loop antenna) have been developed and tested under various PD faults and their performance were evaluated in comparison with high frequency current transformer (HFCT) which is being used commercially for PD testing and measurement. Among these three sensors, it is shown that D-dot sensor and Rogowski coil are more dependable when... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: cooling, electronics cooling, heat transfer, oscillating heat pipes, pulsating heat pipes, thermal resistance
Electronics (particularly power electronics) are the core element in many energy-related applications. Due to the increasing power density of electronic parts, the demands on thermal management solutions have risen considerably. As a novel passive and highly efficient cooling technology, pulsating heat pipes (PHPs) can transfer heat away from critical hotspots. In this work, we present two types of small and compact PHPs with footprints of 50 × 100 mm2, thicknesses of 2 and 2.5 mm and with high fluid channel density, optimized for cooling electronic parts with high power densities. The characterization of these PHPs was carried out with a strong relation to practical applications, revealing excellent thermal properties. The thermal resistance was found to be up to 90% lower than that of a comparable solid copper plate. Thus, a hot part with defined heating power would remain at a much lower temperature level and, for the same heater temperature, a much larger heating power could be app... [more]

Investigation of Pressure Fluctuation and Pulsating Hydraulic Axial Thrust in Francis Turbines
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Francis turbine, hydraulic axial thrust, numerical simulation, partial load operation, pressure fluctuation
Under the circumstances of rapid expansion of diverse forms of volatile and intermittent renewable energy sources, hydropower stations have become increasingly indispensable for improving the quality of energy conversion processes. As a consequence, Francis turbines, one of the most popular options, need to operate under off-design conditions, particularly for partial load operation. In this paper, a prototype Francis turbine was used to investigate the pressure fluctuations and hydraulic axial thrust pulsation under four partial load conditions. The analyses of pressure fluctuations in the vaneless space, runner, and draft tube are discussed in detail. The observed precession frequency of the vortex rope is 0.24 times that of the runner rotational frequency, which is able to travel upstream (from the draft tube to the vaneless space). Frequencies of both 24.0 and 15.0 times that of the runner rotational frequency are detected in the recording points of the runner surface, while the ma... [more]

Single-Solution-Based Vortex Search Strategy for Optimal Design of Offshore and Onshore Natural Gas Liquefaction Processes
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: compression power, Energy Efficiency, liquefaction process, Natural Gas, propane-precooled mixed refrigerant, single mixed refrigerant
Propane-Precooled Mixed Refrigerant (C3MR) and Single Mixed Refrigerant (SMR) processes are considered as optimal choices for onshore and offshore natural gas liquefaction, respectively. However, from thermodynamics point of view, these processes are still far away from their maximum achievable energy efficiency due to nonoptimal execution of the design variables. Therefore, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) production is considered as one of the energy-intensive cryogenic industries. In this context, this study examines a single-solution-based Vortex Search (VS) approach to find the optimal design variables corresponding to minimal energy consumption for LNG processes, i.e., C3MR and SMR. The LNG processes are simulated using Aspen Hysys and then linked with VS algorithm, which is coded in MATLAB. The results indicated that the SMR process is a potential process for offshore sites that can liquefy natural gas with 16.1% less energy consumption compared with the published base case. Whereas,... Subject: Food & Agricultural Processes
Keywords: bioenergy, Biomass, economics, rural area, sustainable development
The agricultural sector can play an important role in the transformation of the energy economy in Poland. Special attention in this paper has been paid to the development of the agricultural biogas market in Poland. The considerations mainly concern organizational and economic aspects. Agricultural biogas plant represents the circular cycle of matter and energy. It enables the establishment of low-carbon, resource-efficient links between the agriculture and energy sectors. This is an important element of the circular economy, where waste from agricultural production and the agri-food industry, coming from renewable resources, is transformed into goods with a higher added value. The social and economic needs of the present generation and future generations are considered. The paper presented the characteristics of the Polish market, i.e., the number of entities, the number and location of plants, as well as the production volumes. A Non-Adaptive Single-Phase PLL Based on Discrete Half-Band Filtering to Suppress Severe Frequency Disturbances
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: digital filters, moving average, multi-rate, phase-locked loops, power systems
The interconnection of new generating and storing devices to the power grid imposes the necessity of synchronizing, so the power flow can be manipulated and distributed. In the presence of an increasingly perturbed electric grid, many proposals of novel and modified synchronization techniques attained enough robustness to deal with known perturbations. However, such proposals exhibit drawbacks on their own, leaving open enhancement opportunities, mostly over their discrete implementation—e.g., sampling issues and not-considered inter/harmonics—and their inherent complexity—e.g., the need for frequency adaptability. In this work, three traditional synchronous reference frame (SRF) phase-locked loops (PLL) are modified to implement discrete filtering, such as the well-known proposals based on moving average filters (MAFs), to avoid the problems mentioned above, known for affecting the MAF’s performance. This proposal makes use of discrete, efficient units modularly assembled to yield a s... [more]

A Modified Bursting Energy Index for Evaluating Coal Burst Proneness and Its Application in Ordos Coalfield, China
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bursting energy index, coal burst proneness, coal mine, elastic strain energy density, rock mechanics
Coal burst is a type of dynamic geological hazard in coal mine. In this study, a modified bursting energy index, which is defined as the ratio of elastic strain energy at the peak strength to the released strain energy density at the post-peak stage, was proposed to evaluate the coal burst proneness. The calculation method for this index was also introduced. Two coal mines (PJ and TJH coal mines) located in Ordos coalfield were used to verify the validity of the proposed method. The tests results indicate that modified bursting energy index increases linearly with increasing uniaxial compressive strength. The parameter A, which is used to fit relation between total input and elastic strain energy density, has a significant effect on the modified bursting energy index. A large value of parameter A means more elastic strain energy before the peak strength while a small value indicates most of input energy was dissipated. Finally, the coal burst proneness of these two coal mines was evalu... [more]

Three-Legs Interleaved Boost Power Factor Corrector for High-Power LED Lighting Application
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: continuous current mode (CCM), high-power LED lighting, IGBT, interleaved converters, power factor correction (PFC), ripple analysis, three-phase boost converter
In this article, a three-leg interleaved boost Power Factor Corrector (IBPFC) converter for energy-efficient LED lighting systems connected to the main grid was discussed. This IBPFC circuit presented features 60 kHz of commutation frequency and up to 3 kW of power rating. The controlled rectifier front-end boost PFC supplied a DC/DC converter to drive power LEDs suitable for street lighting or a lighting system for a stadium, etc. The IBPFC operated in continuous current mode (CCM). The ripple impact of the IBPFC converter was analyzed and a novel methodology of inductance design was presented. In the proposed design approach, the derivative calculation of the current ripple peak compared with the derivative of the input current was used to define a critical inductance value to ensure the CCM condition. Experimental validation was provided on a 3kW prototype.

Probabilistic Load Flow Approach Considering Dependencies of Wind Speed, Solar Irradiance, Electrical Load and Energy Exchange with a Joint Probability Distribution Model
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: copula, dependencies, pair-copula, probabilistic load flow, probability density function, solar irradiance, transmission system planning, vine copula, wind speed
The modelling of stochastic feed-ins and demands becomes essential for transmission grid operation and planning due to the extension of renewable energy sources (RES). Neglecting the correlation between uncertain variables and/or oversimplifying the distribution through the assumption of Normal distributions leads to the inaccurate determination of future network states. Therefore, the uncertainties need to be accurately modelled in order to be used in a probabilistic load flow approach. This paper analyses the characteristics of wind speed and solar irradiance for different locations throughout countries and models the dependencies between them. In addition, the total electrical load and the energy exchange between neighbouring countries are analysed. All of these uncertainties are modelled together in a high-dimensional joint probability distribution using pair-copula constructions. The model is applied to generate samples and determine the probability of extreme events, e.g. high RE... [more]

Application of Genetic Algorithm for More Efficient Multi-Layer Thickness Optimization in Solar Cells
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: finite difference time domain, Genetic Algorithm, optical modelling, solar cell optimization
Thin-film solar cells are predominately designed similar to a stacked structure. Optimizing the layer thicknesses in this stack structure is crucial to extract the best efficiency of the solar cell. The commonplace method used in optimization simulations, such as for optimizing the optical spacer layers’ thicknesses, is the parameter sweep. Our simulation study shows that the implementation of a meta-heuristic method like the genetic algorithm results in a significantly faster and accurate search method when compared to the brute-force parameter sweep method in both single and multi-layer optimization. While other sweep methods can also outperform the brute-force method, they do not consistently exhibit 100% accuracy in the optimized results like our genetic algorithm. We have used a well-studied P3HT-based structure to test our algorithm. Our best-case scenario was observed to use 60.84% fewer simulations than the brute-force method.

Subject: Process Operations
Keywords: arbitrage operation, customer load clustering, energy management in smart grid, energy storage system (ESS), peak shaving operation, time-of-use (TOU) tariff
This study proposes a methodology to develop adaptive operational strategies of customer-installed Energy Storage Systems (ESS) based on the classification of customer load profiles. In addition, this study proposes a methodology to characterize and classify customer load profiles based on newly proposed Time-of-Use (TOU) indices. The K-means and Self-Organizing Map (SOM) sophisticated clustering methods were applied for classification. Furthermore, this study demonstrates peak shaving and arbitrage operations of ESS with current supporting polices in South Korea. Actual load profiles accumulated from customers under the TOU rate were used to validate the proposed methodologies. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: critical velocity, natural gas hydrate, solid fluidization method, ultimate breaking distance, water jet
Water jet technology is a key technology in the marine natural gas hydrate (NGH) solid fluidization mining method. As an important parameter in water jet breaking NGH sediments technology, the critical breaking velocity of NGH sediments is unknown. In the present research, an orthogonal design experiment is carried out to study the critical velocity of NGH breakage by water jet, using frozen soil and sand as experimental samples. First, the time it takes to reach maximum NGH breaking depth is determined. Then, ultimate breaking distance is studied with respect to the NGH saturation, jet pressure, and nozzle diameter. Following that, the variation of critical velocity with NGH saturation is analyzed. Eventually, a formula to calculate the critical velocity for marine NGH breakage by water jet process is established, and the undetermined coefficient (η) in the formula is calibrated with the experiment data. The results show that the ultimate breaking distance is mostly achieved within 63... [more]

Towards Smart Energy Grids: A Box-Constrained Nonlinear Underdetermined Model for Power System Observability Using Recursive Quadratic Programming
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: Algorithms, optimal PMU placement, smart cities, smart energy grids, smart power transmission system, synchronized measurements, underdetermined nonlinear systems
This paper introduces an underdetermined nonlinear programming model where the equality constraints are fewer than the design variables defined on a compact set for the solution of the optimal Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) placement. The minimization model is efficiently solved by a recursive quadratic programming (RQP) method. The focus of this work is on applying an RQP to attempt to find guaranteed global minima. The proposed minimization model is conducted on IEEE systems. For all simulation runs, the RQP converges superlinearly towards optimality in a finite number of iterations without to be rejected the full step-length. The simulation results indicate that the RQP finds out the minimal number and the optimal locations of PMUs to make the power system wholly observable.

Subject: Materials
Keywords: anthraquinone, aqueous battery, manganese battery, metal-organic material, titanium anode
The need for expanded energy storage motivates material development for scalable aqueous secondary batteries. The combination of transition metals with redox-active organics represents a new approach to functional material design. Here, we detail the synthesis of titanium(IV) 1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone (Ti(1,8-DHAQ)2) as a novel redox-active material and demonstrate its use as a negative electrode in an aqueous battery. This one-pot synthesis results in amorphous micron-scale particles with titanium binding directly to the carbonyl feature as evidenced by scanning electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy. When assembled in a coin cell with a lithium manganese oxide positive electrode, the active material can be electrochemically cycled with a charge density of 40 mAh/g at 1.1 V. This represents a new method of creating simple and scalable electrodes using metal-organic materials for versatile energy storage applications.

Subject: Intelligent Systems
Keywords: failure analysis, industrial maintenance management, knowledge management, major overhauls-outages-shutdowns-turnarounds, multicriteria decision analysis
Systematic failure analysis generally enhances the ability of engineering decision-makers to obtain a holistic view of the causal relationships that often exist within the systems they manage. Such analyses are made more difficult by uncertainties and organisational complexities associated with critical and inevitable industrial maintenance activities such as major overhauls, outages, shutdowns, and turnarounds (MoOSTs). This is perhaps due to the ratio of tasks-to-duration typically permitted. While core themes of MoOSTs including planning, contracts, costing, execution, etc., have been the focus of most research activities, it is worth noting that the ability to successfully transfer and retain MoOSTs knowledge is still under-investigated. Subject: Other
Keywords: flux-weakening, generalized proportional integral observer, interior permanent magnet synchronous motor, nonlinear predictive control
This paper proposes a generalized proportional integral observer (GPIO) based nonlinear predictive control (NPC) for an interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) to improve the flux-weakening (FW) current control performance against the complex nonlinear cross-coupling terms and the IPMSM parameters’ variations. First, the IPMSM is remodeled to further analyze the FW control difficulties caused by such cross-coupling terms and parameters variations. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: battery mechanical aging, diffusion induced stress, electrode particle model, hydrostatic stress influence on diffusion, li-ion battery
Electric cycling is one of the major damage sources in lithium-ion batteries and extensive work has been produced to understand and to slow down this phenomenon. The damage is related to the insertion and extraction of lithium ions in the active material. These processes cause mechanical stresses which in turn generate crack propagation, material loss and pulverization of the active material. In this work, the principles of diffusion induced stress theory are applied to predict concentration and stress field in the active material particles. Coupled and uncoupled models are derived, depending on whether the effect of hydrostatic stress on concentration is considered or neglected. The analytical solution of the coupled model is proposed in this work, in addition to the analytical solution of the uncoupled model already described in the literature.
