Design, Development and Thermal Analysis of Reusable Li-Ion Battery Module for Future Mobile and Stationary Applications
Arun Mambazhasseri Divakaran, Dean Hamilton, Krishna Nama Manjunatha, Manickam Minakshi
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: design, discharge rate, Energy Storage, Li-ion battery, thermal
The performance, energy storage capacity, safety, and lifetime of lithium-ion battery cells of different chemistries are very sensitive to operating and environmental temperatures. The cells generate heat by current passing through their internal resistances, and chemical reactions can generate additional, sometimes uncontrollable, heat if the temperature within the cells reaches the trigger temperature. Therefore, a high-performance battery cooling system that maintains cells as close to the ideal temperature as possible is needed to enable the highest possible discharge current rates while still providing a sufficient safety margin. This paper presents a novel design, preliminary development, and results for an inexpensive reusable, liquid-cooled, modular, hexagonal battery module that may be suitable for some mobile and stationary applications that have high charge and or discharge rate requirements. The battery temperature rise was measured experimentally for a six parallel 18650 c... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: dissatisfaction, enthalpy, humidity, IAQ, IEQ, indoor air quality, indoor environmental quality, nearly zero energy building, NZEB, panel tests, TC, thermal comfort
The authors studied the impact of indoor air humidity in the range of 60% to 90% on building user perception in the temperature range of 26 to 28 °C. The research thesis was put forward that the impact of humidity on indoor air quality dissatisfaction of building users in a warm and humid indoor environment is greater than that indicated in thermal comfort models. The presented experiment examined the indoor air quality perception of n = 28 subjects in the test chamber of a nearly zero energy building under ten environmental conditions, together with a thermal comfort assessment. The authors developed an experimental relation for predicting building users’ satisfaction based on the Weber−Fechner law, where the predicted percentage of dissatisfied users (PD) is determined by means of air enthalpy (h), PD = f(h). The obtained results confirmed the sated thesis. Additionally, the intersection points of the experimental function and isotherms resulting from the Fanger model are presented,... [more]
Effect of Valve Opening Manner and Sealing Method on the Steady Injection Characteristic of Gas Fuel Injector
Tianbo Wang, Lanchun Zhang, Qian Chen
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: gas fuel injector, injection efficiency, opening manner, sealing method, steady injection characteristic
The steady-state injection characteristic of gas fuel injector is one of the key factors that affects the performance of gas fuel engine. The influences of different injection strategies, such as different injection angles and different injection positions, on the mixing performance in gas-fueled engine have been emphasized in previous literatures. However, the research on the injection characteristics of the gas fuel injector itself are insufficient. The three-dimensional steady-state computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models of two kinds of injectors, in different opening manners, and the other two kinds of injectors, in different sealing methods, were established in this paper. The core region speed, stagnation pressure loss and mass flow rate were compared. Additionally, the effective injection pressure (EIP) concept was also used to evaluate the injection efficiency of gas fuel injector. The simulation results show that the jet speed of the pull-open injector is higher than the pu... [more]
The Performance Gap in Energy-Efficient Office Buildings: How the Occupants Can Help?
Qadeer Ali, Muhammad Jamaluddin Thaheem, Fahim Ullah, Samad M. E. Sepasgozar
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: agent-based modeling, Energy Efficiency, energy performance gap, energy savings, occupant behavior
Rising demand and limited production of electricity are instrumental in spreading the awareness of cautious energy use, leading to the global demand for energy-efficient buildings. This compels the construction industry to smartly design and effectively construct these buildings to ensure energy performance as per design expectations. However, the research tells a different tale: energy-efficient buildings have performance issues. Among several reasons behind the energy performance gap, occupant behavior is critical. The occupant behavior is dynamic and changes over time under formal and informal influences, but the traditional energy simulation programs assume it as static throughout the occupancy. Effective behavioral interventions can lead to optimized energy use. To find out the energy-saving potential based on simulated modified behavior, this study gathers primary building and occupant data from three energy-efficient office buildings in major cities of Pakistan and categorizes t... March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: enlightened night landscape, lighting classes determination, lighting sustainability, public street lighting, road traffic volume, space syntax analysis
Street lighting plays a crucial role in a city’s night landscape and in urban traffic management, influencing users’ comfort and safety. To contain costs of public street lighting systems and to avoid energy waste, illuminance levels on road surfaces must be adequate to fit actual traffic volumes, as prescribed by regulations. This is true not only for motorized roads but also for sidewalks, paths, and pedestrian areas. Regulations in force establish a relationship between road traffic volumes and minimum illuminance levels through the lighting classes selection procedure. Lighting classes selection is based on various para meters among which traffic volume is the most difficult to evaluate because traffic volumes are generally estimated or measured by a traffic observation campaign. In this paper, an alternative method for classes association which is based on a space syntax approach, is described. The method was applied to the case study town of Pontedera (Italy) for the analysis of... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: energy storage systems, frequency response, virtual inertia
This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the effect of the converter synchronizing methods on the contribution that Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) can provide for the support of the inertial response of a power system. Solutions based on phase-locked loop (PLL) synchronization and virtual synchronous machine (VSM) synchronization without PLL are described and then compared by using time-domain simulations for an isolated microgrid (MG) case study. The simulation results showed that inertial response can be provided both with and without the use of a PLL. However, the behavior in the first moments of the inertia response differed. For the PLL-based solutions, the transient response was dominated by the low-level current controllers, which imposed fast under-damped oscillations, while the VSM systems presented a slower response resulting in a higher amount of energy exchanged and therefore a greater contribution to the support of the system inertial response. Moreover, it... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: convolutional neural network, deep learning, fault diagnosis, induction motor drive, inter-turn short circuits
In this paper, the idea of using a convolutional neural network (CNN) for the detection and classification of induction motor stator winding faults is presented. The diagnosis inference of the stator inter-turn short-circuits is based on raw stator current data. It offers the possibility of using the diagnostic signal direct processing, which could replace well known analytical methods. Tests were carried out for various levels of stator failures. In order to assess the sensitivity of the applied CNN-based detector to motor operating conditions, the tests were carried out for variable load torques and for different values of supply voltage frequency. Experimental tests were conducted on a specially designed setup with the 3 kW induction motor of special construction, which allowed for the physical modelling of inter-turn short-circuits in each of the three phases of the machine. The on-line tests prove the possibility of using CNN in the real-time diagnostic system with the high accura... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: condition monitoring, signal processing, vibration analysis, wind energy, wind turbines
Condition monitoring of gear-based mechanical systems in non-stationary operation conditions is in general very challenging. This issue is particularly important for wind energy technology because most of the modern wind turbines are geared and gearbox damages account for at least the 20% of their unavailability time. In this work, a new method for the diagnosis of drive-train bearings damages is proposed: the general idea is that vibrations are measured at the tower instead of at the gearbox. This implies that measurements can be performed without impacting the wind turbine operation. The test case considered in this work is a wind farm owned by the Renvico company, featuring six wind turbines with 2 MW of rated power each. A measurement campaign has been conducted in winter 2019 and vibration measurements have been acquired at five wind turbines in the farm. The rationale for this choice is that, when the measurements have been acquired, three wind turbines were healthy, one wind tur... [more]

Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the most disruptive technologies of our time. Interest in the use of AI for urban innovation continues to grow. Particularly, the rise of smart cities—urban locations that are enabled by community, technology, and policy to deliver productivity, innovation, livability, wellbeing, sustainability, accessibility, good governance, and good planning—has increased the demand for AI-enabled innovations. There is, nevertheless, no scholarly work that provides a comprehensive review on the topic. This paper generates insights into how AI can contribute to the development of smarter cities. A systematic review of the literature is selected as the methodologic approach. Results are categorized under the main smart city development dimensions, i.e., economy, society, environment, and governance. The findings of the systematic review containing 93 articles disclose that: (a) AI in the context of smart cities is an emerging field of research and practice. (b) T... [more]
A Framework for Flexible and Cost-Efficient Retrofit Measures of Heat Exchanger Networks

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: critical points, flexibility, heat exchanger network (HEN), multi-period, Optimization, retrofit
Retrofitting of industrial heat recovery systems can contribute significantly to meeting energy efficiency targets for industrial plants. One issue to consider when screening retrofit design proposals is that industrial heat recovery systems must be able to handle variations, e.g., in inlet temperatures or heat capacity flow rates, in such a way that operational targets are reached. Consequently, there is a need for systematic retrofitting methodologies that are applicable to multi-period heat exchanger networks (HENs). In this study, a framework was developed to achieve flexible and cost-efficient retrofit measures of (industrial) HENs. The main idea is to split the retrofitting processes into several sub-steps. This splitting allows well-proven (single period) retrofit methodologies to be used to generate different design proposals, which are collected in a superstructure. By means of structural feasibility assessment, structurally infeasible design proposals can be discarded from fu... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Au nanoparticle, CaPbBr3, localized surface plasmon, perovskite solar cell, quantum dot
We demonstrate a method to enhance the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of MAPbI3 perovskite solar cells through localized surface plasmon (LSP) coupling with gold nanoparticles:CsPbBr3 hybrid perovskite quantum dots (AuNPs:QD-CsPbBr3). The plasmonic AuNPs:QD-CsPbBr3 possess the features of high light-harvesting capacity and fast charge transfer through the LSP resonance effect, thus improving the short-circuit current density and the fill factor. Compared to the original device without Au NPs, a 27.8% enhancement in PCE of plasmonic AuNPs:QD-CsPbBr3/MAPbI3 perovskite solar cells was achieved upon 120 μL Au NP solution doping. This improvement can be attributed to the formation of surface plasmon resonance and light scattering effects in Au NPs embedded in QD-CsPbBr3, resulting in improved light absorption due to plasmonic nanoparticles.

Keywords: cyclic voltammetry, donor number, ferrocene, high concentrated electrolytes, lithium, Nernst equation, reference electrode
The use of concentrated aprotic electrolytes in lithium batteries provides numerous potential applications, including the use of high-voltage cathodes and Li-metal anodes. In this paper, we aim at understanding the effect of salt concentration on the variation of the Li/Li+ Quasi-Reference Electrode (QRE) potential in Tetraglyme (TG)-based electrolytes. Comparing the obtained results to those achieved using Dimethyl sulfoxide DMSO-based electrolytes, we are now able to take a step forward and understand how the effect of solvent coordination and its donor number (DN) is attributed to the Li-QRE potential shift. Using a revised Nernst equation, the alteration of the Li redox potential with salt concentration was determined accurately. It is found that, in TG, the Li-QRE shift follows a different trend than in DMSO owing to the lower DN and expected shorter lifespan of the solvated cation complex.
A New Configuration of Three-Level ZSI Using Transistor Clamped Topology
Santosh Sonar
March 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: pulse width modulation, three-level inverters, transistor clamped inverter, Z-source inverters
In this paper, a three-level ZSI (impedance source inverter) based on transistor clamped theory is proposed. It uses the least number of switch counts and associated gate circuitry among all existing topologies of three-level ZSI without any performance degradation. The existing three-level ZSI topologies require three power switches to be turned ON for upper-lower shoot-through (ULST), and four power switches to be turned ON for full dc-link shoot-through (FST). However, with the proposed configuration, upper−lower shoot-through (ULST) and full dc-link shoot-through (FST) is inserted by turning ON only two power semiconductors. A comparison between diode clamped, transistor clamped, and t-type is presented. The proposed topology can realize any of the existing sine-triangle- or space vector-based PWM (pulse width modulation) schemes, and all existing configurations of three-level ZSI can merge into the proposed inverter configuration.

Keywords: electric hybrid systems, electric marine propulsion, electric ships, electric vehicles
The article presents issues related to the possibility of using electric propulsion systems in units used to transport crews servicing wind towers at sea. Offshore wind energy issues are discussed. Proposals for electric propulsion systems that could be used on units for transporting crews servicing offshore wind farms are presented. The possibility of using purely electrical drive systems or hybrid drive systems operating in a diesel-electric configuration is analyzed. By observing the motion of real CTV units, based on the data from the MarineTraffic service, a mathematical simulation model was developed, for which a number of simulations were carried out in the Modelica environment. The developed mathematical model takes into account the dynamic loads acting on the ship’s hull, hydrodynamic resistances, electric and diesel propulsion systems’ properties together with their individual elements’ characteristics. The tests of the electric propulsion system showed reduced fuel consumpti... [more]

Keywords: HENs, improved superstructure, MINLP, steam heater, utility system
In process industries, the heating gap in heat exchanger networks (HENs) is normally compensated by the steam generated from a utility system, thus these two mutually influencing systems should be designed as a whole through establishing structural interrelationships. In this work, an improved stage-wise superstructure of HENs is proposed to integrate with a Rankine cycle-based utility system. Inner- and inter-stage heaters are considered in the new structure. Furthermore, the selection of steam in different levels is also investigated, extending the possibilities of steam utilization in HENs and generation in utility systems. The presented methodology is able to realize the optimal design of HENs by considering the supply and utilization of steam. Heaters’ allocations, matches of streams, steam distribution and utilization are optimized accompanying with the trade-off amongst equipment investment, fuel consumption and power generation in objective, which is highly related to the final... March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cosimulation method, power system dynamic performance, sensitivity analysis, stochastic unit commitment, subhourly modeling
Subhourly modeling of power systems and the use of the stochastic optimization are two relevant solutions proposed in the literature to address the integration of stochastic renewable energy sources. With this aim, this paper deals with the effect of different formulations of the subhourly stochastic unit commitment (SUC) problem on power system dynamics. Different SUC models are presented and embedded into time domain simulations (TDS) through a cosimulation platform. The objective of the paper is to study the combined impact of different frequency control/machine parameters and different SUC formulations on the long-term dynamic behaviour of power systems. The analysis is based on extensive Monte Carlo TDS (MC-TDS) and a variety of scenarios based on the New England 39-bus system.
Transparent Photonic Crystal Heat Mirrors for Solar Thermal Applications

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: photonic crystals, solar energy, solar receivers, thermal photonics, transparent heat mirror
Numerical calculations are performed to determine the potential of using one-dimensional transparent photonic crystal heat mirrors (TPCHMs) as transparent coatings for solar receivers. At relatively low operating temperatures of 500 K, the TPCHMs investigated herein do not provide a significant advantage over conventional transparent heat mirrors that are made using transparent conducting oxide films. However, the results show that TPCHMs can enhance the performance of transparent solar receiver covers at higher operating temperatures. At 1000 K, the amount of radiation reflected by a transparent cover back to the receiver can be increased from 40.4% to 60.0%, without compromising the transmittance of solar radiation through the cover, by using a TPCHM in the place of a conventional transparent mirror with a In2O3:Sn film. For a receiver operating temperature of 1500 K, the amount of radiation reflected back to the receiver can be increased from 25.7% for a cover that is coated with a... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: direct flux control, inductance matrix, motor control, motor drive, PMSM, sensorless technique, synchronous motor
In the field of sensorless control of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), different techniques based on machine anisotropies have been studied and implemented successfully. Nevertheless, most proposed approaches extract the rotor position information from the measured machine currents, that, when applied to low-power machines, might require high-bandwidth current sensors. An interesting alternative is given by sensorless techniques that exploit the star-point voltage of PMSMs, such as the direct flux control technique. This work aims at analyzing the conditions of applicability of such technique by considering a more thorough description of the machine inductance matrix. After a comprehensive mathematical description of the technique and characterization of the machine anisotropy information that is extracted from the star-point voltage, simulation as well as experimental results conducted on a test machine are presented and discussed in order to validate the proposed theory.

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aircraft ice accretion, conjugate heat transfer, heat and mass transfer, loose-coupling method, thermal anti-icing system
To simulate aircraft thermal anti-icing systems and solve the conjugate heat transfer of air-droplet flow and solid skin, the heat and mass transfer model of the runback water on the anti-icing surface was combined with the heat conduction equation of the skin by loosely coupled methods. According to the boundary conditions used for the runback water conservation equations, two loose-coupling methods for the heat exchange between the runback water and the solid skin were developed based on surface heat flow and surface temperature, respectively. The anti-icing and ice accretion results of a NACA 0012 electro-thermal anti-icing system were obtained by the two loose-coupling methods. The heat flow-based method directly solves the thermodynamic model of the runback water without any extra assumptions, but the convergence rate is relatively slow. On the other hand, the temperature-based method achieves higher calculation speed, but the freezing point is extended to an artificial temperatur... [more]

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: arc furnace, model research, unbalance, voltage fluctuations
Arc furnaces, due to their high unit power and load nature, belong to the receivers affecting the power quality. A dynamically changing electric arc is the main source of disturbances generated by arc devices. This current article presents the results of model tests of disturbances caused by arc furnaces. It also presents the attempts to estimate the power supply conditions for arc furnaces, so that they do not generate unacceptable disturbances to the power system. Various models of the electric arc are proposed. The values of the elements making up the furnace supply system were based on actual parameters. In these networks, measurements of electricity quality indicators were carried out, which allowed us to refer to the obtained results of model tests with the real values. Accordingly, to the real conditions, the values of the short-circuit power of the network and the power of furnace transformers were also adopted in the tests.

Keywords: efficiency, modernization, recycling, sustainable development, wind power plant
The production of energy in wind power plants is regarded as ecologically clean because there being no direct emissions of harmful substances during the conversion of wind energy into electricity. The production and operation of wind power plant components make use of the significant potential of materials such as steel, plastics, concrete, oils, and greases. Energy is also used, which is a source of potential negative environmental impacts. Servicing a wind farm power plant during its operational years, which lasts most often 25 years, followed by its disassembly, involves energy expenditures as well as the recovery of post-construction material potential. There is little research in the world literature on models and methodologies addressing analyses of the environmental and energy aspects of wind turbine modernization, whether in reference to turbines within their respective lifecycles or to those which have already completed them. The paper presents an attempt to solve the problems... [more]

Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) control is an essential part of every photovoltaic (PV) system, in order to overcome any change in ambient environmental conditions and ensure operation at maximum power.. Recently, micro-inverters have gained a lot of attention due to their ability to track the true MPP for each individual PV module, which is considered a powerful solution to overcome the partial shading and power mismatch problems which exist in series-connected panels. Although the LLC resonant converter has high efficiency and high boosting ability, traditional MPPT techniques based on Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) do not work well with it. In this paper, a fixed frequency predictive MPPT technique is presented for the LLC resonant converter to be used as the first-stage in a PV micro-inverter. Using predictive control enhances the tracking efficiency and reduces the steady state oscillation. Operation with fixed switching frequency for the LLC resonant converter improves the tota... [more]
Second-Order Approximation of the Seismic Reflection Coefficient in Thin Interbeds

March 23, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: amplitude variation with incident angle (AVA), reflection coefficient, second-order approximation, seismic modeling, thin bed, thin interbed
As most of the lithostratigraphic reservoirs in China are thin interbeds, the study of seismic responses in thin interbeds is an integral part of lithologic reservoir exploration. However, at present, the research on seismic reflection coefficients of thin interbeds in exploration seismology is still weak, which leads to the lack of theoretical basis for the subsequent interpretation of amplitude variation with offset (AVO) related to thin interbed. To solve this problem, in this paper, we proposed second-order approximate equations of the seismic reflection coefficients in thin-bed and thin-interbed layers. Under the assumption of a small impedance contrast in layered media, we made a second-order approximation with a more evident physical meaning to the reflection coefficient calculation method proposed by Kennett. Then, based on the test of the single thin-layer theoretical model, it was confirmed that the second-order approximation equation of the PP-wave (reflected compressional w... [more]

Hypothetical half-Heusler (HH) ternary alloy of CoVSn has already been computationally investigated for possible spintronics and thermoelectric applications. We report the experimental realization of this compound and the characterizations of its thermoelectric properties. The material was synthesized by a solid-state reaction of the stoichiometric amounts of the elements via powder metallurgy (30 h mechanical milling and annealing at 900 °C for 20 h) and spark plasma sintering (SPS). The temperature-dependent ternary thermodynamic phase diagram of Co-V-Sn was further calculated. The phase diagram and detailed analysis of the synthesized material revealed the formation of the non-stoichiometry HH CoVSn, mixed with the binary intermetallic phases of SnV3, Co2Sn, and Co3V. The combination of X-ray diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and thermoelectric transport properties confirmed the formation of a multi-phase compound. Keywords: grid-connected, photovoltaic system, sun tracker
Recently, the demand for small grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems has been rapidly increasing; this is due to the reduction in the costs of grid-connected storage systems as compared to those of the stand-alone ones. Notably, the performance of the solar tracking system is not only depending on the types but also the region that they are set up and used. To understand how solar tracking systems work globally, we need to know their performance in each country and even the different parts of a country. In this study, two grid-connected PV systems with 250 W solar modules were used to investigate the efficient improvement of a single-axis sun tracking system in Central Vietnam. First, a mechanical tracking device with a linear actuator and a controller was designed and then its performance was comprehensively investigated with a grid-connected PV system. In addition to evaluating the energy gain by the tracking system, this study also considered the energy consumption of the linear... [more]
