Effect of Diversion Cavity Geometry on the Performance of Gas-Liquid Two-Phase Mixed Transport Pump
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: diversion cavity retrofit, gas-liquid two-phase flow, mixed transport pump, numerical simulation, optimization design.
For the purpose of improving the transport capability of the mixed transport pump, a new self-made three-stage deep-sea multiphase pump was taken as the research object. Based on the Euler-Euler heterogeneous flow model, liquid (water) and gas (air) are used as the mixed media to study the external characteristics and internal flow identities of the mixed pump under different gas volume fraction (GVF) conditions. According to the simulation results, a local optimal design scheme of the diversion cavity in the dynamic and static connection section is proposed. The numerical results before and after the optimization are compared and analyzed to explore the effect of the diversion cavity optimization on the performance, blade load and internal flow identities of the pump. The results show that the head and efficiency are obviously improved when the inner wall of the diversion cavity is reduced by 4 mm along the radial direction. After optimization, under the condition of 10% gas content,... [more]

Accurate Deep Model for Electricity Consumption Forecasting Using Multi-Channel and Multi-Scale Feature Fusion CNN−LSTM
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: CNN–LSTM, electricity forecasting, long-term forecasting (LTF), medium-term forecasting (MTF), short-term forecasting (STF), smart grid, very short-term forecasting (VSTF).
Electricity consumption forecasting is a vital task for smart grid building regarding the supply and demand of electric power. Many pieces of research focused on the factors of weather, holidays, and temperatures for electricity forecasting that requires to collect those data by using kinds of sensors, which raises the cost of time and resources. Besides, most of the existing methods only focused on one or two types of forecasts, which cannot satisfy the actual needs of decision-making. This paper proposes a novel hybrid deep model for multiple forecasts by combining Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) and Long-Short Term Memory (LSTM) algorithm without additional sensor data, and also considers the corresponding statistics. Different from the conventional stacked CNN−LSTM, in the proposed hybrid model, CNN and LSTM extracted features in parallel, which can obtain more robust features with less loss of original information. Chiefly, CNN extracts multi-scale robust features by various f... [more]

The Impact of Imperfect Weather Forecasts on Wind Power Forecasting Performance: Evidence from Two Wind Farms in Greece
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: forecasting, Machine Learning, uncertainty, weather forecasts, wind power.
Weather variables are an important driver of power generation from renewable energy sources. However, accurately predicting such variables is a challenging task, which has a significant impact on the accuracy of the power generation forecasts. In this study, we explore the impact of imperfect weather forecasts on two classes of forecasting methods (statistical and machine learning) for the case of wind power generation. We perform a stress test analysis to measure the robustness of different methods on the imperfect weather input, focusing on both the point forecasts and the 95% prediction intervals. The results indicate that different methods should be considered according to the uncertainty characterizing the weather forecasts.

Short-Term Photovoltaic Power Forecasting Using a Convolutional Neural Network−Salp Swarm Algorithm
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Numerical Methods and Statistics
Keywords: convolutional neural network, day ahead forecasting, PV power forecasting, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, salp swarm algorithm.
The high utilization of renewable energy to manage climate change and provide green energy requires short-term photovoltaic (PV) power forecasting. In this paper, a novel forecasting strategy that combines a convolutional neural network (CNN) and a salp swarm algorithm (SSA) is proposed to forecast PV power output. First, the historical PV power data and associated weather information are classified into five weather types, such as rainy, heavy cloudy, cloudy, light cloudy and sunny. The CNN classification is then used to determine the prediction for the next day’s weather type. Five models of CNN regression are established to accommodate the prediction for different weather types. Each CNN regression is optimized using a salp swarm algorithm (SSA) to tune the best parameter. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, comparisons were made to the SSA based support vector machine (SVM-SSA) and long short-term memory neural network (LSTM-SSA) methods. The proposed method was tes... [more]

Nodal Matrix Analysis for Optimal Pressure-Reducing Valve Localization in a Water Distribution System
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: modified reference pressure algorithm, pressure management, pressure-reducing valve (PRV), water distribution system (WDS).
The use of pressure-reducing valves is an efficient pressure management technique for leakage reduction in a water distribution system. It is recommended to place an optimized number and location of pressure-reducing valves in the water distribution system for better sustainability and management. A modified reference pressure algorithm is adopted from the literature for identifying the optimized localization of valves using a simplified algorithm. The modified reference pressure algorithm fails to identify the optimal valve localization in a large-scale water pipeline network. Nodal matrix analysis is proposed for further improvement of the modified reference pressure algorithm. The proposed algorithm provides the preferred pipeline for valve location among all the pressure-reducing valve candidate locations obtained from the modified reference algorithm in complex pipeline networks. The proposed algorithm is utilized for pressure management in a real water network located in Piracica... [more]

Numerical Analysis on the Effectiveness of Gurney Flaps as Power Augmentation Devices for Airfoils Subject to a Continuous Variation of the Angle of Attack by Use of Full and Surrogate Models
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, gurney flap, power augmentation, RBF, VAWT, wind turbine.
The disclosing of new diffusion frontiers for wind energy, like deep-water offshore applications or installations in urban environments, is putting new focus on Darrieus vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs). To partially fill the efficiency gap of these turbines, aerodynamic developments are still needed. This work in particular focuses on the development of a mathematical model that allows predicting the possible performance improvements enabled in a VAWT by application of the Gurney flaps (GFs) as a function of the blade thickness, the rotor solidity and geometry of the Gurney flap itself. The performance of airfoil with GFs was evaluated by means of detailed simulations making use of computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The accuracy of the CFD model was assessed against the results of a dedicated experimental study. In the simulations, a dedicated method to simulate cycles of variation of the angle of attack similar to those taking place in a cycloidal motion (rather than purely sinus... [more]

Model Simplification on Energy and Comfort Simulation Analysis for Residential Building Design in Hot and Arid Climate
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Energy performance, IDA ICE, Model simplifications, Residential building, Thermal and visual comfort.
Accurate building physics performance analysis requires time-consuming, detailed modeling, and calculation time requirement. This paper evaluates the impact of model simplifications on thermal and visual comfort as well as energy performance. In the framework of dynamic zonal thermal simulation, a case study of a residential building in hot climate is investigated. A detailed model is created and simplified through four scenarios, by incrementally reducing the number of thermal zones from modeling every space as a separate zone to modeling the building as a single zone. The differences of total energy and comfort performance in the detailed and simplified models are analyzed to evaluate the grade of the simplifications’ accuracy. The results indicate that all simplification scenarios present a marginal average deviation in total energy demand and thermal comfort by less than 20%. Combining rooms with similar thermal features into a zone presents the optimal scenario, while the worst sc... [more]

Lifetime Analysis of IGBT Power Modules in Passively Cooled Tidal Turbine Converters
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: active speed stall control, insulated gate bipolar transistors, lifetime estimation, passive cooling, submerged power electronics, thermal cycling, tidal turbines, turbulence, waves.
Thermal cycling is one of the major reasons for failure in power electronic converters. For submerged tidal turbine converters investigating this failure mode is critical in improving the reliability, and minimizing the cost of energy from tidal turbines. This paper considers a submerged tidal turbine converter which is passively cooled by seawater, and where the turbine has fixed-pitch blades. In this respect, this study is different from similar studies on wind turbine converters, which are mostly cooled by active methods, and where turbines are mostly pitch controlled. The main goal is to quantify the impact of surface waves and turbulence in tidal stream velocity on the lifetime of the converter IGBT (insulated gate bipolar transistor) modules. The lifetime model of the IGBT modules is based on the accumulation of fatigue due to thermal cycling. Results indicate that turbulence and surface waves can have a significant impact on the lifetime of the IGBT modules. Furthermore, to acce... [more]

Numerical Study of a Novel Concept for Manufacturing Savonius Turbines with Twisted Blades
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: blade manufacturing process, Savonius rotor, twisted blades, VAWT, vertical axis wind turbines.
This work presents a numerical study of the aerodynamic performance and the resulting flow field of two novel Savonius wind turbines with twisted blades. The novelty relies on the blade manufacturing process which is characterized by a ‘twisted cut’ through the central axis of a hollow cylinder (tube), followed by a partial twisted cut in the range of 90°. This approach does not require any expensive fabrication process such as blade molding and/or 3D prints, and, therefore, it can potentially mitigate the production costs. The main goal is to investigate the operational parameters and the overall performance of the presented devices, which are currently being operated in atmospheric conditions. For this purpose, three-dimensional simulations have been performed using the open-source CFD library OpenFOAM in order to solve the governing equations and for characterizing the main phenomena involved in the flow pattern. Natural Gas Transmission Pipelines: Risks and Remedies for Host Communities
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: bodily injury, external cost, health, insurance, Natural Gas, pipelines, property damage, transmission, uncertainty.
Transmission pipelines deliver natural gas to consumers around the world for the production of heat, electricity, and organic chemicals. In the United States, 2.56 million miles (4.12 million km) of pipelines carry natural gas to more than 75 million customers. With the benefits of pipelines come the risks to health and property posed by leaks and explosions. Proposals for new and recommissioned pipelines challenge host communities with uncertainty and difficult decisions about risk management. The appropriate community response depends on the risk level, the potential cost, and the prospect for compensation in the event of an incident. This article provides information on the risks and expected costs of pipeline leaks and explosions in the United States, including the incident rates, risk factors, and magnitude of harm. Although aggregated data on pipeline incidents are available, broadly inclusive data do not serve the needs of communities that must make critical decisions about host... [more]

Proposal for a Method Predicting Suitable Areas for Installation of Ground-Source Heat Pump Systems Based on Response Surface Methodology
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: ground source heat pump, heat exchange rate, hydrogeological information, numerical simulation, response surface methodology, Surrogate Model.
The installation potential of ground-source heat pump (GSHP) systems has been studied based on the spatial interpolation of numerical simulation results using ground heat exchanger (GHE) models. This study is the first to create an estimation formula for the heat exchange rate (HER) to obtain a solution equivalent to the numerical analysis results considering the average method when supplying three-dimensional (3D) hydrogeological information that affects the HER to a two-dimensional (2D) map. It was found that the main factors affecting the HER were groundwater flow velocity, subsurface temperature, and thermal conductivity. The response surface methodology was utilized to approximate the HER using the above-mentioned three parameters. The estimated HER showed very strong agreement with that calculated by the GHE models. The application of the estimation formula to the simulation of the 3D groundwater flow and heat transport model of the Sendai Plain (Japan) better reflects the hydrog... [more]

Active Disturbance Rejection Control of a Longitudinal Tunnel Ventilation System
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: active disturbance rejection, cascaded control, pollutant concentration, tunnel ventilation.
This paper proposes an innovative approach for controlling pollutant release in a long-distance tunnel via longitudinal ventilation. Enhanced by an active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) method, a ventilation controller is developed to regulate the forced air ventilation in a road tunnel. As a result, the pollutants (particulate matter and carbon monoxide) are reduced by actively regulating the air flow rate through the tunnel. The key contribution of this study lies in the development of an extended state observer that can track the system disturbance and provide the system with compensation via a nonlinear state feedback controller equipped by the ADRC. The proposed method enhances the disturbance attenuation capability in the ventilation system and keeps the pollutant concentration within the legitimate limit in the tunnel. In addition to providing a safe and clean environment for passengers, the improved tunnel ventilation can also achieve better energy saving as the air flow... [more]

Keywords: Cup plant, Giant miscanthus, mechanical durability, moisture content, perennial biomass, pressure compaction, solid density, Virginia mallow.
In Poland the use of solid biomass obtained from intentional plantations of energy plants is increasing. This biomass is most often processed into solid fuels. There are growing indications that renewable energy sources, in particular biomass production, will continue to develop, so the better we know the raw material, the more effectively we will be able to use it. The results of tests that determine the impact of compaction pressure on selected quality parameters of pellets made from selected biomass types are presented. Material from plants such as Giant miscanthus (Miscanthus × giganteus Greef et Deu), Cup plant (Silphium perfoliatum L.), Virginia mallow (Sida hermaphrodita (L.) Rusby) was studied. The compaction process was carried out using the SIRIO P400 hydraulic press with a closed chamber with a diameter of 12 mm. A Hybrid Time Integration Scheme for the Discontinuous Galerkin Discretizations of Convection-Dominated Problems
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: discontinuous Galerkin, explicit scheme, implicit scheme, time integration, unsteady convection-dominated problem.
Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method is a popular high-order accurate method for solving unsteady convection-dominated problems. After spatially discretizing the problem with the DG method, a time integration scheme is necessary for evolving the result. Owing to the stability-based restriction, the time step for an explicit scheme is limited by the smallest element size within the mesh, making the calculation inefficient. In this paper, a hybrid scheme comprising a three-stage, third-order accurate, and strong stability preserving Runge−Kutta (SSP-RK3) scheme and the three-stage, third-order accurate, L-stable, and diagonally implicit Runge−Kutta (LDIRK3) scheme is proposed. By dealing with the coarse and the refined elements with the explicit and implicit schemes, respectively, the time step for the hybrid scheme is free from the limitation of the smallest element size, making the simulation much more efficient. Numerical tests and comparison studies were made to show the performance of... [more]

March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: dye-sensitized solar cells, microscopy, photocurrent, photoluminescence.
Photoconversion processes such as electron injection (photooxidation) and dye regeneration (reduction) in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) occur at considerably inhomogeneous semiconductor/dye/electrolyte interfaces, implying a very high heterogeneity of interfacial photoconversion kinetics. Herein, we present a temporally and spatially resolved investigation of DSSCs comprising a cover glass photoanode with a 100-nm thick TiO2 layer loaded with the metal-free organic dye sensitizer MK-2, which is performed by employing laser scanning microscopy (LSM) for the simultaneous measurement of the photocurrent (PC) and photoluminescence (PL) of DSSCs under short-circuit conditions. Analysis of PL decay curves and the excitation rate dependences of PC and PL obtained for local (or submicrometric) areas of the MK-2-DSSC allows disclosing and quantifying three types of dyes coexisting in the DSSCs: (i) a dye that only generates PC (“PC-dye,” 75% of total dye molecules in the DSSC), (ii) a dye... Subject: Process Control
Keywords: embedded length, resin rock bolt support, rock bolt pattern, room and pillar method with mined roof bending, work of rock bolt support.
The article presents methods of making the rock bolt support more yieldable, especially for a stratified roof. Alongside the increasing depth of exploitation of raw material deposits, rock bolt support units are more often designed taking into account more intensive deformations and displacements of underground excavations. In the article, a room and pillar method with mined roof bending and roof reinforcement with bolt patterns of 1 m × 1 m, 1.5 m × 1.5 m and 2 m × 2 m is presented. Moreover, the laboratory tests included 1.8 m long bolts, which were embedded segmentally on the lengths of 100 mm, 150 mm and 200 mm were tested. Based on the load−displacement characteristics, the deformation energy for flat and profiled dome bearing plates was calculated. Making the segmentally embedded resin rock bolt support yieldable enabled it to perform additional work. Furthermore, it was found that rock bolt support with a dome bearing plate took over 2.5 times more energy compared to a rock bolt... [more]

Heat Decarbonisation Modelling Approaches in the UK: An Energy System Architecture Perspective
March 24, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: energy modelling, energy system architecture, heat decarbonisation.
Energy models have been widely applied to the analysis of energy system decarbonisation to assess the options and costs of a transition to a low carbon supply. However, questions persist as to whether they are able to effectively represent and assess heat decarbonisation pathways for the buildings sector. A range of limitations have been identified, including a poor spatio-temporal resolution, limited representation of behaviour, and restricted representation of the full technical option set. This paper undertakes a review of existing energy models for heat decarbonisation in the UK, applying the novel perspective of energy system architecture (ESA). A set of ESA-related features are identified (including evolvability, flexibility, robustness, and feasibility), and models are reviewed against these features. The review finds that a range of models exist that have strengths across different features of ESA, suggesting that multiple modelling approaches are needed in order to adequately... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: discrete element method, intrusion resistive force, mechanical performances, quartz sand, robot feet with typical structures.
Four kinds of feet with typical structures, referred to as the hemispherical foot, the semicylindrical foot, the rectangular foot and the circular foot, respectively, were designed and manufactured to study the foot−terrain interaction mechanics for legged robots. Three kinds of quartz sand were selected to study how particle size, shape and compactness affected the physical properties of the substrate and the intrusion performance of mechanical feet. The media with smaller particle sizes had higher bulk densities and lower angles of stability, but no obvious rule was found for particle shapes of quartz sand with different sizes. The intrusion resistive forces and pressures of the hemispherical foot on these three kinds of quartz sand were all less compared with the other three mechanical feet. The particle disturbance areas and motion trends were compared under these four kinds of mechanical feet using discrete element method simulations. The intrusion resistive forces of these mechan... Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: eddy currents, hysteresis, magnetics modeling, saturable core, variable inductor.
This paper proposes and develops a circuit-based model aiming to simulate variable magnetic power elements in power electronic converters. The derived model represents the magnetic element by a reluctance-based equivalent circuit. The model takes into consideration device core losses, with the main emphasis given to hysteresis losses, which are modeled using the Jiles-Atherton model. The core loss model is further validated on different ferromagnetic materials to prove its range of applicability. The winding losses of the magnetic device are also taken into consideration, which are obtained using Dowell empirical formulas. In addition, the frequency dependence of the device losses is also considered. The proposed modeling procedure has been applied to study and characterize a double E-core variable power inductor structure in a 1 kW SiC full bridge DC-DC converter. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: electric vehicles, off-board charging station, power electronics, power quality, renewable energy source, smart grid, smart home.
This paper presents the analysis and experimental validation of a single-phase off-board multi-functional electric vehicle (EV) charging station (MF-EVCS), which has a single ac interface and two dc interfaces. As innovative aspects, the proposed MF-EVCS handles the interface of the ac power grid, the dc interface of a renewable energy source (RES), as well as the dc interface of an EV to perform dc charging or discharging of the batteries (in off-board grid-to-vehicle (G2V) or vehicle-to-grid (V2G) modes). Considering the power grid, the individual operation modes of the RES and the EV interfaces can be considered. Moreover, a combination of these modes is also possible. Besides, the MF-EVCS has as key innovative aspect the possibility of operating as an active power filter (APF), supporting the operation with reactive power and/or selected current harmonics. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: demand response, frequency regulation, hardware in the loop (HIL), small-signal analysis, variable speed heat pump (VSHP), virtual inertia.
The growth in the integration of converter interfaced renewable energy has reduced the system inertia, which threatens system stability due to high rate of change of frequency (RoCoF) and frequency nadir issues unless steps are taken to mitigate it. There is a need to provide sufficient fast frequency response to maintain adequate inertia in the system. This paper investigates the capabilities of a variable speed heat pump to provide an emulated inertial response. This paper presents a virtual synchronous machine control for a variable speed heat pump that provides support for grid frequency regulation over the inertial response time frame. A small-signal model with the transfer function of the variable speed heat pump is developed to analyse the effectiveness and feasibility of providing virtual inertia at the device and grid level, respectively. Subject: Process Control
Keywords: effective induction heating, Energy Conversion, energy matching, inductive power transmission, resonance inverter.
Induction heating is one of the most effective methods of energy conversion from the electrical to thermal form, used in diverse industrial processes. In this paper the resonance generators for induction heating are considered for which the equivalent load resistance has a strong impact on the ability of the system to use optimally the potentially available power. The equivalent load resistance varies, depending on the type of induction heating system (IHS) and during the heating process itself. This paper presents an induction heat generator in which an L-LC resonance system (called the LLC system) plays an active role in energy matching. The LLC resonance system is analyzed from the point of view of both the functional dependencies describing the influence of frequency on the load resistance transformation, and the impact of the LLC setup on the sensitivity of the generator to changes in the charge resistance caused by heating. Keywords: air/fuel ratio, cold-start emissions, electrically heated catalyst, internal combustion engine, micro combined heat and power, Natural Gas, spark advance.
Decentralized power generation by combined heat and power plants becomes increasingly popular as a measure to advance the energy transition. In this context, a substantial advantage of small combined heat and power plants is based on the relatively low pollutant emissions. However, a large proportion of the pollutant emissions is produced during a cold-start. This fact is not reflected in governmental and institutional emission guidelines, as these strongly focus on the emission levels under steady-state conditions. This study analyzes the spark advance, the reference air/fuel ratio and an electrically heated catalyst in terms of their potential to reduce the cold-start emissions of a micro combined heat and power plant which uses a natural gas fueled reciprocating internal combustion engine as prime mover and a three-way catalytic converter as aftertreatment system. The aim of this work is to age commercial battery cells far beyond their expected lifetime. There is a gap in the literature regarding run to failure tests of lithium-ion batteries that this work intends to address. Therefore, twenty new Samsung ICR18650-26F cells were aged as a battery pack in a run to failure test. Aging took place with a constant load current and a constant charge current to accelerate capacity decrease. Important aging parameters such as capacity and internal resistance were measured at each cycle to monitor their development. The end of the test was initiated by the explosion of a single battery cell, after which the battery pack was disassembled and all parameters of the still intact single cells were measured. The distribution of all measured capacities and internal resistances is displayed graphically. This clearly shows the influence of the exploded cell on the cells in its immediate vicinity.
