A Drone Based Transmission Line Components Inspection System with Deep Learning Technique

A Hot Water Split-Flow Dual-Pressure Strategy to Improve System Performance for Organic Rankine Cycle

The organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is widely used to recover industrial waste heat. For an ORC system using industrial waste hot water as a heat source, a novel hot water split-flow dual-pressure organic Rankine cycle (SFD-ORC) system is developed to improve the performance of the ORC. The maximum net power output was selected to compare three ORC systems, including basic ORC (B-ORC), conventional dual-pressure ORC (CD-ORC) and SFD-ORC. A genetic algorithm (GA) was used to optimize the parameters to search the maximum net power output of ORCs. The maximum net output power was taken as the standard of performance evaluation. Potential for CO2 Reduction by Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer for Passenger Vehicles in Japan

In this study, a novel system named the third-generation wireless in-wheel motor (WIWM-3), which has a dynamic wireless power transfer (DWPT) system, is developed. It can extend the cruise range, which is one of the key specifications of electric vehicles. DWPT also reduces CO2 emission as the driving resistance is reduced due to light weight of the batteries. In this study, CO2 emission by an internal combustion vehicle, a long range drivable electric vehicle with the same cruise range, and an electric vehicle with WIWM-3 equipped with the DWPT system are analyzed using actual measurement data and calculated data based on actual measurement or specification data. A WPT system with WIWM-3 achieves 92.5% DC-to-DC efficiency as indicated by an actual measurement at the nominal position. Solving the Stochastic Generation and Transmission Capacity Planning Problem Applied to Large-Scale Power Systems Using Generalized Shift-Factors

In this study, we successfully develop the transmission planning problem of large-scale power systems based on generalized shift-factors. These distribution factors produce a reduced solution space which does not need the voltage bus angles to model new transmission investments. The introduced formulation copes with the stochastic generation and transmission capacity expansion planning problem modeling the operational problem using a 24-hourly load behaviour. Results show that this formulation achieves an important reduction of decision variables and constraints in comparison with the classical disjunctive transmission planning methodology known as the Big M formulation without sacrificing optimality. Tooth coil winding machines offer a low cost manufacturing process, high efficiency and high power density, making these attractive for traction applications. Using direct oil cooling in combination with tooth coil windings is an effective way of reaching higher power densities compared to an external cooling jacket. In this paper, the validation of the electromagnetic design for an automotive 600 V, 50 kW tooth coil winding traction machine is presented. The design process is a combination of an analytical sizing process and FEA optimization. It is shown that removing iron in the stator yoke for cooling channels does not affect electromagnetic performance significantly. This paper presents a novel three-phase current source rectifier (CSR) for AC/DC step-down voltage conversion to reduce voltage and current stress. The proposed converter features an asymmetrical connection between upper and lower arms compared with conventional CSRs, but has the same number of devices. With the proposed asymmetrical structure and modified space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) scheme, half of transistors only need to withstand half of the line-to-line voltage rather than the full line-to-line voltage, and its DC link current can be shared by multiple switches in freewheeling periods. Therefore, it is able to bring about a significant reduction in voltage and current stress, allowing for an improvement in the converter without additional cost. The topological structure, operation principles, and comparative analysis are specifically presented. The crystallization of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) is essential for improving solar cell efficiency. In this study, we analyzed the crystallization of a-Si:H via excimer laser annealing (ELA) and compared this process with conventional thermal annealing. ELA prevents thermal damage to the substrate while maintaining the melting point temperature. Here, we used xenon monochloride (XeCl), krypton fluoride (KrF), and deep ultra-violet (UV) lasers with wavelengths of 308, 248, and 266 nm, respectively. Laser energy densities and shot counts were varied during ELA for a-Si:H films between 20 and 80 nm thick. This paper explores a way to apply Item Response Theory (IRT), one of the popular statistical methodologies in measurement and psychometrics, to evaluate Financial Transmission Rights (FTR) paths in the U.S. electricity market. FTR is an energy derivative product to hedge congestion cost risks inherent in constrained transmission lines. In New England, with about 1200 pricing locations, the theoretical combinations of FTR paths amount to 1.4 million in prevailing flows alone. With capital constraints, it is imperative that FTR market participants build the capability to evaluate FTR paths to bid on. IRT provides a framework of how well tests work, and how individual items work on tests, estimating respondents’ latent abilities, and individual item parameters. Microgrids have been popularized in the past decade because of their ability to add distributed generation into the classic distribution systems. Protection problems are among several other problems that need solutions in order to extract the full capability of these novel networks. This research follows the branches of two major solutions, namely adaptive protection and protection optimization. Adaptive protection implementation with a novel concept of clustering is considered, and protection setting optimization is done using a novel hybrid nature-inspired algorithm. Adaptive protection is utilized to cope with the topology variations, while optimization techniques are used to calculate the protection settings that provide faster fault clearances in coordination with backup protection. A New Generalized Morse Potential Function for Calculating Cohesive Energy of Nanoparticles

A new generalized Morse potential function with an additional parameter m is proposed to calculate the cohesive energy of nanoparticles. The calculations showed that a generalized Morse potential function using different values for the m and α parameters can be used to predict experimental values for the cohesive energy of nanoparticles. Moreover, the enlargement of the attractive force in the generalized potential function plays an important role in describing the stability of the nanoparticles rather than the softening of the repulsive interaction in the cases when m > 1.
