Parameter Calibration for a TRNSYS BIPV Model Using In Situ Test Data
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: BIPV, model parameter calibration, Particle Swarm Optimization, TRNSYS
Installing renewable energy systems for zero-energy buildings has become increasingly common; building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems, which integrate PV modules into the building envelope, are being widely selected as renewable systems. In particular, owing to the rapid growth of information and communication technology, the requirement for appropriate operation and control of energy systems has become an important issue. To meet these requirements, a computational model is essential; however, some unmeasurable parameters can result in inaccurate results. This work proposes a calibration method for unknown parameters of a well-known BIPV model based on in situ test data measured over eight days; this parameter calibration was conducted via an optimization algorithm. The unknown parameters were set such that the results obtained from the BIPV simulation model are similar to the in situ measurement data. Results of the calibrated model indicated a root mean square error (RMSE) o... [more]

Transitioning All Energy in 74 Metropolitan Areas, Including 30 Megacities, to 100% Clean and Renewable Wind, Water, and Sunlight (WWS)
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: climate change, megacities, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, solar, urban air pollution, Wind
To date, roadmaps and policies for transitioning from fossil fuels to clean, renewable energy have been developed for nations, provinces, states, cities, and towns in order to address air pollution, global warming, and energy insecurity. However, neither roadmaps nor policies have been developed for large metropolitan areas (aggregations of towns and cities), including megacities (metropolitan areas with populations above 10 million). This study bridges that gap by developing roadmaps to transition 74 metropolitan areas worldwide, including 30 megacities, to 100% wind, water, and sunlight (WWS) energy and storage for all energy sectors by no later than 2050, with at least 80% by 2030. Among all metropolitan areas examined, the full transition may reduce 2050 annual energy costs by 61.1% (from $2.2 to $0.86 trillion/yr in 2013 USD) and social costs (energy plus air pollution plus climate costs) by 89.6% (from $8.3 to $0.86 trillion/yr). The large energy cost reduction is due to the 57.1... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: AC/DC, decentralized, distributed, HVDC, HVDC/AC, hybrid, state estimation, transmission, unified, VSC, WLS
As the integration of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems on modern power networks continues to expand, challenges have appeared in different fields of the network architecture. In the Supervisory, Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) field, software and toolboxes are expected to be modified to meet the new network characteristics. Therefore, this paper presents a unified Weighted Least Squares (WLS) state estimation algorithm suitable for hybrid HVDC/AC transmission systems, based on Voltage Source Converter (VSC). The mathematical formulas of the unified approach are derived for modelling the AC, DC and converter coupling components. The method couples the AC and DC sides of the converter through power and voltage constraints and measurement functions. Two hybrid power system test cases have been studied to validate this work, a 4-AC/4-DC/4-AC network and Cigre B4 DC test case network. Furthermore, comparison between the fully decentralized state estimation and the unified met... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: energy saving, metro train, Model Predictive Control, online, switched-mode dynamical systems
With the rapid development of urban rail transit systems and the consequent sharp increase of energy consumption, the energy-saving train operation problem has been attracting much attention. Extensive studies have been devoted to optimal control of a single metro train in an inter-station run to minimize the energy consumption. However, most of the existing work focuses on offline optimization of the energy-saving driving strategy, which still needs to be tracked in real train operation. In order to attain better performance in the presence of disturbances, this paper studies the online optimization problem of the energy-saving driving strategy for a single metro train, by employing the model predictive control (MPC) approach. Firstly, a switched-mode dynamical system model is introduced to describe the dynamics of a metro train. Based on this model, an MPC-based online optimization problem is formulated for obtaining the optimal mode switching times with minimal energy consumption fo... [more]

Effect of Spark Ignition Timing and Water Injection Temperature on the Knock Combustion of a GDI Engine
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: combustion, emission, knock, temperature, water injection
A turbocharged downsizing spark ignition (SI) engine cooperating with an in-cylinder direct injection technology is one of the most effective ways to improve the power and economy of gasoline engines. However, engine knock has limited the application and development of the downsizing of gasoline engines. Water injection technology can effectively suppress the knock. In this study, a method of numerical simulation was used to explore the effect of the water injection temperature on the combustion and suppression of the knock. First of all, the knock of the gasoline engine was induced by advancing the spark timing. Then, when the other conditions were the same, different water injection temperatures were set. The results show that lowering the water injection temperature reduced the knock intensity in the cylinder, but increasing the water injection temperature made the water distribution more uniform, and the peak values of each monitoring point were more consistent. The circulating wor... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: economic assessment, emission rights sales mechanism, energy security, near-zero emission technologies, oxy-fuel combustion cycles, power market
The paper analyzes the main issues of power market development for clean energy production within the broader framework of ensuring the country’s energy security. In addition, special attention is paid to the technologies aimed at reducing emissions of toxic substances and greenhouse gases by the fossil-fired power plants. Even though the future electricity markets would most likely depend on the high shares of renewable energy sources (RES) in the electricity system, energy efficiency such as the one based on the near-zero emission technologies might also play a crucial role in the transition to the carbon-free energy future. In particular, there are the oxy-fuel combustion technologies that might help to reduce the proportion of unburned fuel and increase the efficiency of the power plant while reducing the emissions of flue gases. Our paper focuses on the role and the place of the near-zero emission technologies in the production of clean energy. We applied economic and mathematical... [more]

Optimal Placement of IoT-Based Fault Indicator to Shorten Outage Time in Integrated Cyber-Physical Medium-Voltage Distribution Network
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: cyber-physical network, fault indicator, LoRa, NB-IoT, optimal placement
Traditional fault indicators based on 3G and 4G cannot send out fault-generated information if the distribution lines are located in the system across remote mountainous or forest areas. Hence, power distribution systems in rural areas only rely on patrol to find faults currently, which wastes time and lacks efficiency. With the development of the Internet of things (IoT) technology, some studies have suggested combining the long-range (LoRa) and the narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT) technologies to increase the data transmission distance and reduce the self-built communication system operating cost. In this paper, we propose an optimal configuration scheme for novel intelligent IoT-based fault indicators. The proposed fault indicator combines LoRa and NB-IoT communication technologies with a long communication distance to achieve minimum power consumption and high-efficiency maintenance. Under this given cyber network and physical power distribution network, the whole fault locat... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: adsorption–desorption, coalbed methane, gas diffusion, Lattice Boltzmann method, pore-scale
The diffusion−adsorption behavior of methane in coal is an important factor that both affecting the decay rate of gas production and the total gas production capacity. In this paper, we established a pore-scale Lattice Boltzmann (LB) model coupled with fluid flow, gas diffusion, and gas adsorption−desorption in the bi-dispersed porous media of coalbed methane. The Knudsen diffusion and dynamic adsorption−desorption of gas in clusters of coal particles were considered. Firstly, the model was verified by two classical cases. Then, three dimensionless numbers, Re, Pe, and Da, were adopted to discuss the impact of fluid velocity, gas diffusivity, and adsorption/desorption rate on the gas flow−diffusion−adsorption process. The effect of the gas adsorption layer in micropores on the diffusion−adsorption−desorption process was considered, and a Langmuir isotherm adsorption theory-based method was developed to obtain the dynamic diffusion coefficient, which can capture the intermediate process... April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: commutation failure, dynamic reactive power, loss of excitation, synchronous condenser, UHVDC
The synchronous condenser (SC) has a broad application prospect in ultra-high-voltage direct current (UHVDC) systems. The SC’s loss of excitation (LOE) is an important grid-related fault that may cause damage to the UHVDC. However, as the premise of the scientific protection configuration, knowledge of the SC’s LOE feature and its impact on UHVDC is still missing. This article first analyzes the SC’s LOE feature, offering a basic cognition of this fault. Secondly, the LOE SC’s reactive power response to system voltage variation is studied in the single-machine infinite-bus system. This lends a foundation for transient UHVDC research. Finally, the LOE SC’s impacts on steady and transient UHVDC are evaluated, respectively, considering different AC strengths and system faults through PSCAD/EMTDC (V4.6, Manitoba HVDC Research Center, Winnipeg, MB, Canada) simulations. The results show that: (1) LOE the SC absorbs reactive power while maintaining synchronous operation, its excitation curren... [more]

Rational Design and Testing of Anti-Knock Additives
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: anti-knock, fuel additives, ignition quality tester, phenol
An innovative and informed methodology for the rational design and testing of anti-knock additives is reported. Interaction of the additives with OH● and HO2● is identified as the key reaction pathway by which non-metallic anti-knock additives are proposed to operate. Based on this mechanism, a set of generic design criteria for anti-knock additives is outlined. It is suggested that these additives should contain a weak X-H bond and form stable radical species after hydrogen atom abstraction. A set of molecular structural, thermodynamic, and kinetic quantities that pertain to the propensity of the additive to inhibit knock by this mechanism are identified and determined for a set of 12 phenolic model compounds. The series of structural analogues was carefully selected such that the physical thermodynamic and kinetic quantities could be systematically varied. The efficacy of these molecules as anti-knock additives was demonstrated through the determination of the research octane number... [more]

April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: Borehole Heat Exchangers (BHE), cost saving, EED, hydraulic assessment, optimization assessment, pressure losses, shallow geothermal energy, Thermal Response Test (TRT)
In ground-source heat-pump systems, the heat exchange rate is influenced by various design and operational parameters that condition the thermal performance of the heat pump and the running costs during exploitation. One less-studied area is the relationship between the pumping costs in a given system and the heat exchange rate. This work analyzes the investment and operating costs of representative borehole heat-exchanger configurations with varying circulating flow rate by means of a combination of analytical formulas and case study simulations to allow a precise quantification of the capital and operational costs in typical scenario. As a conclusion, an optimal flow rate minimizing either of both costs can be determined. Furthermore, it is concluded that in terms of operating costs, there is an operational pumping rate above which performance of geothermal systems is energetically strongly penalized.

Techno-Economic Assessment: Food Emulsion Waste Management
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Design
Keywords: bioeconomy, emulsion breakdown, process management, techno-economic assessment
Production of food-grade emulsions is continuously rising globally, especially in developing countries. The steepest demand growth is in the segment of inexpensive meat products where edible emulsions serve as lubricants to mitigate economic loses linked with mechanical damage during automated processing of artificial casings. Provided that production goal is to minimize emulsion transfer into the product, its vast majority becomes voluminous greasy and sticky waste. Public sewage treatment plants cannot process such waste, its cleaning processes tends to collapse under loads of emulsions. To make matters worse, composition of emulsions often changes (according to actual pricing of main components) and emulsion manufacturers carefully guard their recipes. Therefore, running of in-house sewage plants would require continuous experimentation linked with need for skilled personnel, frequent changes in technology setup and high operating costs in general. Consequently, it was repeatedly an... [more]

Integration of a Multi-Stack Fuel Cell System in Microgrids: A Solution Based on Model Predictive Control
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: microgrid, Model Predictive Control, multi-objective, multi-stack, PEM fuel cell
This paper proposes a multi-objective model predictive control (MPC) designed for the power management of a multi-stack fuel cell (FC) system integrated into a renewable sources-based microgrid. The main advantage of MPC is the fact that it allows the current timeslot to be optimized while taking future timeslots into account. The multi-objective function solves the problem related to the power dispatch at time that includes criteria to reduce the multi-stack FC degradation, operating and maintenance costs, as well as hydrogen consumption. Regarding the scientific literature, the novelty of this paper lies in the proposal of a generalized MPC controller for a multi-stack FC that can be used independently of the number of stacks that make it up. Although all the stacks that make up the modular FC system are identical, their levels of degradation, in general, will not be. Thus, over time, each stack can present a different behavior. Therefore, the power control strategy cannot be based o... [more]

System of Comprehensive Energy-Efficient Utilization of Associated Petroleum Gas with Reduced Carbon Footprint in the Field Conditions
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Aspen HYSYS, associated petroleum gas, binary cycle, combined heat and power, GTL, MATLAB Simulink, petroleum production, synthetic liquid hydrocarbons
This paper considers the issue of associated petroleum gas utilization during hydrocarbon production in remote petroleum fields. Due to the depletion of conventional oil and gas deposits around the globe, production shifts to hard-to-recover resources, such as heavy and high-viscosity oil that requires a greater amount of energy to be recovered. At the same time, large quantities of associated petroleum gas are extracted along with the oil. The gas can be utilized as a fuel for power generation. However, even the application of combined power modes (combined heat and power and combined cooling heat and power) cannot guarantee full utilization of the associated petroleum gas. Analysis of the electrical and heat loads’ graphs of several oil fields revealed that the generated thermal energy could not always be fully used. To improve the efficiency of the fuel’s energy potential conversion, an energy system with a binary power generation cycle was developed, consisting of two power install... [more]

Multi-Year High-Voltage Power System Planning Considering Active Power Curtailment
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: curtailment, high-voltage, long-term planning, multi-year, network expansion planning, power system planning, time series
Integrating active power curtailment (APC) of renewable energy sources (RES) in power system planning reduces necessary investments in the power system infrastructure. In current target grid planning methods, APC is considered by fixed curtailment factors without considering the provided flexibility to its full extent. Time-series-based planning methods allow the integration of the time dependency of RES and loads in power system planning, leading to substantial cost savings compared to the worst-case method. In this paper, we present a multi-year planning strategy for high-voltage power system planning, considering APC as an alternative investment option to conventional planning measures. A decomposed approach is chosen to consider APC and conventional measures in a long-term planning horizon of several years. The optimal investment path is obtained with the discounted cash flow method. A case study is conducted for the SimBench high-voltage urban benchmark system. Results show that t... [more]

Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: hydropower, hydropower tunnel systems, pumped storage, Renewable and Sustainable Energy, seasonal energy storage
This paper presents a technical review of the existing pumped storage plants in Norway. The power system is changing towards integrating more and more renewable energy, especially from variable renewable energy sources, leading to new challenges for the security of supply, power, frequency, and voltage regulation. Thus, energy storage options are a highly researched topic in the current situation. Even though there are many energy storage technologies, most are optimal for short term grid balancing, and few are capable of providing long term (weekly or seasonal) storage. One exception is pumped storage, a mature technology capable of delivering both short term and long term energy storage. In this paper, the ten existing pumped storage plants in Norway are presented, several of which are capable of seasonal energy storage. The Norwegian knowledge and experience with pumped storage plants technology is provided as a basis for future research within the field. The review provides informa... [more]

The Role of Electrification in the Decarbonization of Central-Western Europe
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Optimization
Keywords: electrification, energy transition, green gases, linear programming, net zero carbon emissions, scenario quantification
Scenario studies of energy transition generally point to the central role of electricity. This notion is ambiguous as its interpretation can range from an electricity-only policy to portfolios of different energy vectors with a dominance of electricity. This ambiguity adds to the uncertainty that already pervades today’s investment environment. This paper examines the centrality of electricity through a so-called “variational scenario” analysis with policies obtained by a mix of electricity-only and green gas penetration while maintaining constant decarbonization objectives. Electricity is a complex product that can only be further complicated by the high penetration of renewables and its interaction with the production and use of synthetic fuels. The variational scenario analysis is conducted with sufficiently fine (hourly) granularity to produce an adequate representation of these phenomena. It shows that tilting the central role of electricity to a mix of electricity and green gas o... [more]

Virtual Pressure Sensor for Electronic Expansion Valve Control in a Vapor Compression Refrigeration System
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: electronic expansion valve, model in the loop, vapor compression refrigeration, virtual pressure sensor
Virtual sensor technology, which uses simulation models/algorithms to calculate a value to represent an unmeasured variable or replace a directly measured reading, has attracted many studies in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC&R) industry. However, most virtual sensor technologies are developed for fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) purposes, which generally compare the virtual sensor values with actual measured values to detect if any fault occurred and identify the causes that led to the fault. It is rare to see studies focus on control performance of virtual sensors after substituting an actual sensor. This is particularly important for the system with no redundant sensor since a virtual sensor is the most effective way to operate the system in the desirable region when any sensor failure occurs. To address this gap, this paper develops a new virtual pressure sensor technology to substitute the actual pressure measurement for electronic expansion... [more]

Impact of Building Orientation on Daylight Availability and Energy Savings Potential in an Academic Classroom
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Process Control
Keywords: daylight and building orientation, daylight availability in building, energy savings for lighting, LENI, lighting control, lighting efficiency
In this paper, daylight availability depending on building orientation in a typical educational classroom was investigated. Measurements of daylight illuminance distributions in the room depth for different illuminance outside the building allowed to determine the conditions when the luminaires in a classroom could be turned off, turned on, or dimmed. The outdoor daylight illuminance on the south-east and north façade of the building was recorded and the numbers of hours per year of university activity during which the lighting had to be switched on (up to 100% or brightened) were determined. Based on these numbers and luminaires powers the electricity consumption for lighting was estimated. It was proven that by using dimming control depending on daylight distribution in a room, comparable energy savings could be achieved for different building orientations. These savings of over 30% were greater than through the implementation of on/off control which, for a south-east oriented classr... [more]

Optimal Selection and Location of Fixed-Step Capacitor Banks in Distribution Networks Using a Discrete Version of the Vortex Search Algorithm
April 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Energy Management
Keywords: discrete vortex search algorithm, energy losses minimization, medium-voltage distribution levels, metaheuristic optimization, optimal location of capacitor banks, radial distribution networks
This paper deals with the problem of the optimal selection of capacitor banks in electrical AC distribution systems for minimizing the costs of energy losses during a year of operation through a discrete version of the vortex search algorithm (DVSA). This algorithm works with a hypersphere with a variable radius defined by an exponential function where a Gaussian distribution is used to generate a set of candidate solutions uniformly distributed around the center of this hypersphere. This center corresponds to the best solution obtained at the iteration t, which is initialized at the center of the solution space at the iterative search beginning. The main advantage of combining the exponential function with the Gaussian distribution is the correct balance between the exploration and exploitation of the solution space, which allows reaching the global optimal solution of the optimization problem with a low standard deviation, i.e., guaranteeing repeatability at each simulation. Subject: Energy Systems
Keywords: optimal control, steady wind turbine, variational feedback control, wind turbine
Energy harvesting from the environment is an important aspect of many technologies. The scale of energy capturing and storage can involve the power range from mWatt up to MWatt, depending on the used devices and the considered environments (from ambient acoustic and vibration to ocean wave motion, or wind). In this paper, the wind turbine energy harvesting problem is approached as an optimal control problem, where the objective function is the absorption of an amount of energy in a given time interval by a fluid-flow environment, that should be maximized. The interest relies on outlining general control models of fluid-flow-based extraction plants and identifying an optimum strategy for the regulation of an electrical machine to obtain a maximum-efficiency process for the related energy storage. The mathematical tools are found in the light of optimal control theory, where solutions to the fundamental equations are in the frame of Variational Control (the basis of the Pontryagin optima... Keywords: CFD simulation, cross fractures, dimensional analysis, equilibrium proppant height, proppant transportation
The proppant transportation is a typical two-phase flow process in a complex cross fracture network during hydraulic fracturing. In this paper, the proppant transportation in cross fractures is investigated by the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. The Euler−Euler two-phase flow model and the kinetic theory of granular flow (KTGF) are adopted. The dimensionless controlling parameters are derived by dimensional analysis. The equilibrium proppant height (EPH) and the ratio of the proppant mass (RPM) in the secondary fracture to that in the whole cross fracture network are used to describe the movement and settlement of proppants in the cross fractures. The main features of the proppant transportation in the cross fractures are given, and several relative suggestions are presented for engineering application in the field.
