Carrier Transmission Mechanism-Based Analysis of Front Surface Field Effects on Simplified Industrially Feasible Interdigitated Back Contact Solar Cells

Interdigitated back contact (IBC) n-type silicon solar cells with a different front surface layer doping concentration were fabricated and studied and the influence of the front surface doping level was analyzed via simulation (PC1D). The IBC cells were processed by industrially feasible technologies including laser ablation and screen printing; photolithography was not used. A maximum efficiency of up to 20.88% was achieved at an optimal front surface field (FSF) peak doping concentration of 4.8 × 1019 cm−3 with a sheet resistance of approximately 95 Ω/square, corresponding to Jsc = 40.05 mA/cm2, Voc = 671 mV and a fill factor of 77.70%. Serious ice accretion will cause structural problems and ice flashover accidents, which result in outdoor insulator string operating problems in winter conditions. An experimental study regarding the thermofluid characteristics of a shell-and-plate heat exchanger with different chevron angles (45°/45°, 45°/65°, and 65°/65°) with a plate diameter of 440 mm was carried out. Water was used as the working fluid on both sides and the corresponding temperatures ranged from 30−70 °C. The flow rate on the plate or shell side ranged from 10−60 m3/h. The effects of chevron angles on the heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics of shell-and-plate heat exchangers were studied in detail. With regard to the heat transfer performance on the plate side, a higher chevron angle (65°/65°) resulted in a significantly better performance than a low chevron angle (45°/45°). Tubular steel towers are the most common design solution for supporting medium-to-high-rise wind turbines. In this paper, we propose an optimized power distribution method for hybrid electric energy storage systems for electric vehicles (EVs). The hybrid energy storage system (HESS) uses two isolated soft-switching symmetrical half-bridge bidirectional converters connected to the battery and supercapacitor (SC) as a composite structure of the protection structure. The bidirectional converter can precisely control the charge and discharge of the SC and battery. Spiral wound SCs with mesoporous carbon electrodes are used as the energy storage units of EVs. Automatic Optimization of the Compensation Networks of a Wireless Power Transfer System

This paper addresses the optimization of the compensation networks of a wireless power transfer system. Optimization is performed by means of a genetic algorithm that looks for the reactances of the elements of the compensation networks that maximize the power transfer efficiency and the power transferred to the load. In addition, the algorithm selects the solutions that are less sensitive to the difference between the theoretical and actual reactances. The last part of the paper describes the prototypal setup used for the tests and supports the theoretical findings by reporting experimental results.

The Long-Run Effects of Trade Openness on Carbon Emissions in Sub-Saharan African Countries

Using a panel cointegration model developed based on the data extracted from the World Bank indicators, this study quantified the relationship between carbon emissions, energy consumption, economic growth, and trade openness in sub-Saharan African countries. It discovered from our analysis that there exists a long-run causality association amongst CO2 emissions, energy consumption, economic growth, and trade openness. The study noted the existence of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) in the panel using the square term for trade openness; it was found to have a negative impact, thus trade in the long run will somewhat decrease the environmental pollution in this region. The study results imply that there should be stringent policies and rigorous enforcement in sub-Saharan African to ensure sustainable growth without associative environmental issues.

Coproduction of Furfural, Phenolated Lignin and Fermentable Sugars from Bamboo with One-Pot Fractionation Using Phenol-Acidic 1,4-Dioxane

A one-pot fractionation method of Moso bamboo into hemicellulose, lignin, and cellulose streams was used to produce furfural, phenolated lignin, and fermentable sugars in the acidic 1,4-dioxane system. Xylan was depolymerized to furfural at a yield of 93.81% of the theoretical value; however, the prolonged processing time (5 h) led to a high removal ratio of glucan (37.21%) in the absence of phenol. The optimum moderate condition (80 °C for 2 h with 2.5% phenol) was determined through the high fractionation efficiency. Consequently, 77.28% of xylan and 84.83% of lignin were removed and presented in the hydrolysate, while 91.08% of glucan was reserved in the solid portion. The formation of furfural from xylan remained high, with a yield of 92.92%. The extracted lignin was phenolated with an increasing content of phenolic hydroxyl. Different regions in China have different energy consumption characteristics and changing trends. This paper focuses on analyzing trends in energy consumption changes along the timeline for 30 regions in China. Using the Hybrid Input-Output Model, this paper decomposes energy consumption in 30 regions in 2007, 2012 and 2016 into energy embedded of final consumption expenditure, gross capital formation, inflow and outflow. We use these four dimensions as coordinates to draw a regional radar map. According to the changing characteristics of the radar map, 30 regions are divided into three groups. A zeotropic mixture of isobutane and CO2 was employed as a working fluid in an autocascade refrigeration (ACR) system. An experimental system was designed and built to study the influence of the recuperative heat exchanger (RHX) and openings of the throttle valves on the system performance. The use of RHX facilitated the condensation process and improved the cycle characteristics. The working mass concentration of CO2 was higher, as it was closer to the nominal concentration and the discharge pressure was lower by 19% to even 39% when the RHX was employed in the system. Influence of Thermoelastic Phenomena on the Energy Conservation in Non-Contacting Face Seals

The purpose of this study was to develop a mathematical model for non-contacting face seals to analyze how their performance is affected by thermoelastic phenomena. The model was used to solve thermal conductivity and thermoelasticity problems. The primary goal was to calculate the values of thermal deformations of the sealing rings in a non-contacting face seal with a flexibly mounted rotor (FMR) for a turbomachine. The model assumes the conversion of mechanical energy into heat in the fluid film. A concentric annular heat pipe heat sink (AHPHS) was proposed and fabricated to investigate its thermal behavior. The present AHPHS consists of two concentric pipes of different diameters, which create vacuumed annular vapor space. The main advantage of the AHPHS as a heat sink is that it can largely increase the heat transfer area for cooling compared to conventional heat pipes. In the current AHPHS, condensation takes place along the whole annular space from the certain heating area as the evaporator section. Therefore, the whole inner space of the AHPHS except the heating area can be considered the condenser. In the present study, AHPHSs of different diameters were fabricated and studied experimentally. Power plants based on organic Rankine cycle (ORC) are known for their capacity in converting low and medium-temperature energy sources to electricity. To find the optimal operating conditions, a designer must evaluate the ORC from different perspectives including thermodynamic performance, technological limits, economic viability, and environmental impact. A popular approach to include different criteria simultaneously is to formulate a bi-objective optimization problem. This type of multi-objective optimization (MOO) allows for finding a set of optimal design points by defining two different objectives. Once the optimization is completed, the decision-making analysis shall be carried out to identify the final design solution.
