February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: data analysis, international cooperation, open API, R&D planning, text mining
The number of international collaborations in research and development (R&D) has been increasing in the energy sector to solve global environmental problems—such as climate change and the energy crisis—and to reduce the time, cost, and risk of failure. Successful international project planning requires the analysis of research fields and the technology expertise of cooperative partner institutions or countries, but this takes time and resources. In this study, we developed a method to analyze the information on research organizations and topics, taking advantage of data analysis as well as deep learning natural language processing (NLP) models. A method to evaluate the relative superiority of efficient international collaboration was suggested, assuming international collaboration of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER). Additionally, a workflow of an automated executive summary and a translation of tens of web-posted article... [more]

Bilateral Contracting and Price-Based Demand Response in Multi-Agent Electricity Markets: A Study on Time-of-Use Tariffs
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: bilateral contracting, demand response, electricity markets, load response strategies, time-of-use tariffs
Electrical energy can be traded in liberalized organized markets or by negotiating private bilateral contracts. Competitive markets are central systems where market players can purchase and sell electrical energy. Bilateral contracting consists typically in a private negotiation of power over several months or years between two parties. Price-based demand response considers the active participation of consumers in electricity markets. Consumers adopt demand response programs when responding to market prices or tariffs, as they change over time. Those tariffs can be proposed by retailers by considering their load shape goals, influencing consumers to change their behavior. Consumers may adopt strategies from two different groups, namely by curtailing energy at times of high prices (e.g., peak and intermediate periods) and rescheduling energy away from those times to other times (shifting). This article considers bilateral contracting in electricity markets with demand response. It inves... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: multi-criteria decision, multi-energy carrier, power-to-hydrogen, renewable energies, smart energy hub, uncertainty analysis
Nowadays, the integration of multi-energy carriers is one of the most critical matters in smart energy systems with the aim of meeting sustainable energy development indicators. Hydrogen is referred to as one of the main energy carriers in the future energy industry, but its integration into the energy system faces different open challenges which have not yet been comprehensively studied. In this paper, a novel day-ahead scheduling is presented to reach the optimal operation of a hydrogen-based energy hub, based on a stochastic multi-attribute decision-making approach. In this way, the energy hub model is first developed by providing a detailed model of Power-to-Hydrogen (P2H) facilities. Then, a new multi-objective problem is given by considering the prosumer’s role in the proposed energy hub model as well as the integrated demand response program (IDRP). The proposed model introduces a comprehensive approach from the analysis of the historical data to the final decision-making with t... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: harmony search, parallel machines, renewable resources, Scheduling
This research focuses on the problem of scheduling a set of jobs on unrelated parallel machines subject to release dates, sequence-dependent setup times, and additional renewable resource constraints. The objective is to minimize the maximum completion time (makespan). To optimize the problem, a modified harmony search (MHS) algorithm was proposed. The parameters of MHS are regulated using full factorial analysis. The MHS algorithm is examined, evaluated, and compared to the best methods known in the literature. Four algorithms were represented from similar works in the literature. A benchmark instance has been established to test the sensitivity and behavior of the problem parameters of the different algorithms. The computational results of the MHS algorithm were compared with those of other metaheuristics. The competitive performance of the developed algorithm is verified, and it was shown to provide a 42% better solution than the others.

Implementing TRIZ with Supply Chain Management in New Product Development for Small and Medium Enterprises
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: innovative, new product development, product modularity, small and medium enterprises, Supply Chain, Sustainability, theory of inventive problem-solving
Due to the impact of globalization, the competition between enterprises has become fierce and led the supply chains of many industries to be reorganized. One of the consequences is that the operation of many small and medium enterprises (SMs) had become very difficult. Hence, many of SMEs in Taiwan have gone bankrupt and some of them have moved to other places where they have lower production costs, in order to survive; this not only hollowed out the industries but also disconnected the supply chains in their mother countries. Because Taiwan’s SMEs are generally poor in innovation, this study explored the implementation of the theory of inventive problem-solving (TRIZ) with alignment of new product development (NPD) and supply chain management (SCM) to strengthen the innovation and productivity of new products, so that SMEs can refer to its use to aid sustainable business operation. We considered an SME in Taiwan as a case to study and investigate the strategies that it employed to ach... [more]

Resilience-Enhancing Solution to Mitigate Risk for Sustainable Supply Chain—An Empirical Study of Elevator Manufacturing
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: elevator manufacturing, multicriteria decision-making, quality function deployment, risk resilience, sustainable supply chain
As the complexity of supply chains increases, the enhancement of resilience for mitigating sustainable disruption risks in supply chains is an important issue. Quality function deployment (QFD) has been successfully applied in many domains to solve multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) problems. However, research on developing two houses of quality to connect sustainable supply chain disruption risks, resilience capacities, and resilience-enhancing features in elevator manufacturing supply chains by using the MCDM approach is lacking. This study aims to develop a framework for exploring useful decision-making by integrating the MCDM approach and QFD. By applying the framework, supply chain resilience can be improved by identifying the major sustainable risks and the key resilience to mitigate these risks. Important managerial insights and practical implications are obtained from the framework implementation in a case study of the elevator manufacturing industry. To strengthen resilience... [more]

A Chance Constrained Programming Approach for No-Wait Flow Shop Scheduling Problem under the Interval-Valued Fuzzy Processing Time
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: chance-constrained programming, interval-valued fuzzy sets, no-wait flow shop scheduling, simulated annealing algorithm
This work focuses on the study of robust no-wait flow shop scheduling problem (R-NWFSP) under the interval-valued fuzzy processing time, which aims to minimize the makespan within an upper bound on total completion time. As the uncertainty of actual job processing times may cause significant differences in processing costs, a R-NWFSP model whose objective function involves interval-valued fuzzy sets (IVFSs) is proposed, and an improved SAA is designed for its efficient solution. Firstly, based on the credibility measure, chance constrained programming (CCP) is utilized to make the deterministic transformation of constraints. The uncertain NWFSP is transformed into an equivalent deterministic linear programming model. Then, in order to tackle the deterministic model efficiently, a simulated annealing algorithm (SAA) is specially designed. A powerful neighborhood search method and new acceptance criterion are applied to find better solutions. Numerical computations demonstrate the high e... [more]

Design and Comparison of Strategies for Level Control in a Nonlinear Tank
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: closed-loop control, conical tank, fuzzy logic, gain scheduling, internal model control, performance indexes, PID, process control
In this work, a study of the water level control of an inverted conical tank system is presented. This type of tank has highly nonlinear mathematical and dynamic characteristics. Four control strategies are designed, applied, and compared, namely classical Proportional−Integral−Derivative (PID), Gain Scheduling (GS), Internal Model Control (IMC), and Fuzzy Logic (FL). To determine which of the designed control strategies are the most suitable for an inverted conical tank, a comparative study of the behavior of the system is carried out. With this purpose, and considering situations much closer to reality, a variety of scenarios, such as step responses, random input disturbances, and momentary load disturbances, are conducted. Additionally, performance indexes (error- and statistics-based) are calculated to assess the system’s response.

System Dynamics Modeling in Additive Manufacturing Supply Chain Management
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: additive manufacturing (AM), supply chain (SC), system dynamics (SD)
A system dynamics model was developed with the primary purpose of visualizing the behavior of a supply chain (SC) when it adopts a disruptive technology such as additive manufacturing (AM). The model proposed a dynamic hypothesis that defines the following issue: what is the impact of the AM characteristics and processes in the SC? The model was represented through a causal diagram in thirteen variables related to the SC, organized in two feedback cycles and a data flow diagram, based mainly on the three-essential links of the SC and the order display traceability: supplier−focal manufacturer−distribution Network. Once proposed, the model was validated through the evaluation of extreme conditions and sensitivity analysis. As a result, the dynamic behavior of the variables that condition the chain management was analyzed, evidencing reduction times in production, especially in products that require greater complexity and detail, as well as reductions in inventories and the amount of raw... A Lagrange Relaxation Based Decomposition Algorithm for Large-Scale Offshore Oil Production Planning Optimization
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: Lagrange relaxation algorithm, large-scale, mixed integer nonlinear programming (MINLP), offshore oil production, planning optimization
In this paper, a new Lagrange relaxation based decomposition algorithm for the integrated offshore oil production planning optimization is presented. In our previous study (Gao et al. Computers and Chemical Engineering, 2020, 133, 106674), a multiperiod mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model considering both well operation and flow assurance simultaneously had been proposed. However, due to the large-scale nature of the problem, i.e., too many oil wells and long planning time cycle, the optimization problem makes it difficult to get a satisfactory solution in a reasonable time. As an effective method, Lagrange relaxation based decomposition algorithms can provide more compact bounds and thus result in a smaller duality gap. Specifically, Lagrange multiplier is introduced to relax coupling constraints of multi-batch units and thus some moderate scale sub-problems result. Moreover, dual problem is constructed for iteration. As a result, the original integrated large-scale mode... [more]

Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: constructive heuristic, dynamic lotsizing, flexible production lines, planning horizon, Scheduling
Dynamic lotsizing and scheduling on multiple lines to meet the customer due dates is significant in multi-line production environments. Therefore, this study investigates dynamic lotsizing and scheduling problems in multiple flexible machining lines considering mixed products. In addition, uncertainty in demand and machine failure is considered. A mathematical model is proposed for the considered problem with an aim to maximize the probability of completion of product models from different customer orders. A constructive heuristic method (CHLP) is proposed to solve the current problem. The proposed heuristic involves the steps to distribute different customer order demands among multiple lines and schedule them considering balancing of makespan between the lines. The performance of CHLP is measured with famous heuristics from the literature, based on the test problem instances. Results indicate that CHLP gives better results in terms of quality of results as compared to other famous li... [more]

Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: bullwhip effect, perishable supply chain, quality, waste
The bullwhip effect results from inefficiencies in the supply chain; in perishable products, the inefficiencies are quality in the supply chain and product waste. We carried out a literature review to determine the causes of the bullwhip effect and the supply chain’s quality factors of this phenomenon’s perishable products. Update the demand, the level of deterioration of the product, and the number of intermediaries is the causes of the bullwhip effect most investigated. On the other hand, the product’s safety and the quality of the information are the quality factors of the chain of supplies of perishable products more researched. Future research should address the causes of human behavior that affect the bullwhip effect in the perishable goods supply chain.

Life Cycle Blue and Grey Water in the Supply Chain of China’s Apparel Manufacturing
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: apparel manufacturing, blue water, COD, grey water, life cycle, MRIO
Apparel manufacturing involves high water consumption and heavy water pollution in its supply chain, e.g., planting cotton, producing chemical fibers, and dyeing. This study employs a multi-regional input−output (MRIO) model to (1) assess the life cycle of blue and grey water (chemical oxygen demand (COD) specific) of China’s apparel manufacturing; (2) reveal the hidden linkage among sectors and regions in the whole supply chain; and (3) identify the key regions and upstream sectors with the most water consumption and heaviest water pollution. We found that the agricultural sector (i.e., planting fiber crops) is responsible for primary water consumption and water pollution. In addition, different provinces assume different production roles. Guangdong is a major output province in apparel manufacturing. However, its economic output is contributed to by other regions, such as blue water from Xinjiang and Jiangsu and grey water from Hebei and Shandong. Our research reveals the significanc... [more]

A Time-Series Data Generation Method to Predict Remaining Useful Life
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: data generation, remaining useful life prediction, run-to-failure, symbolic aggregate approximation
Accurate predictions of remaining useful life (RUL) of equipment using machine learning (ML) or deep learning (DL) models that collect data until the equipment fails are crucial for maintenance scheduling. Because the data are unavailable until the equipment fails, collecting sufficient data to train a model without overfitting can be challenging. Here, we propose a method of generating time-series data for RUL models to resolve the problems posed by insufficient data. The proposed method converts every training time series into a sequence of alphabetical strings by symbolic aggregate approximation and identifies occurrence patterns in the converted sequences. The method then generates a new sequence and inversely transforms it to a new time series. Experiments with various RUL prediction datasets and ML/DL models verified that the proposed data-generation model can help avoid overfitting in RUL prediction model.

Risk Propagation of Concentralized Distribution Logistics Plan Change in Cruise Construction
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: concentralized distribution logistics, plan change, risk propagation, system dynamics
Compared with the ordinary merchant ship building, the concentralized distribution in cruise building is more complex. Plan change is a common phenomenon in cruise building, and it is easy to lead to mismatch between production and logistics, resulting in risks such as production schedule delay and inventory backlog. In order to reduce the adverse effects of plan change on the shipyard, it is necessary to conduct an in-depth study on the risks of a centralized distribution logistics plan. Based on the analysis of the composition of the centralized distribution logistics planning system, risk factors in different plan links are identified in this paper. A system dynamic model is constructed to simulate the propagation of five basic types of planning risk, including procurement plan, warehousing plan, pallet concentralization plan, distribution plan and production plan. Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: abrasive jet processing, backside roughing technology, surface roughness, taguchi method
This paper mainly presents a set of new Sapphire Backside Roughing technology. Presently, the associated Sapphire Backside Roughing technology is still concentrated on chemical etching, as its yield rate and efficiency are often limited by lattice structures, and the derived chemical waste fluid after etching is most likely to cause ecological contamination. In this research, refined abrasive jet processing technology is adopted, and in the meantime, the Taguchi experiment design method is taken for detailed experimental planning. Through processing parameter conditions and abrasive selection and development, proper surface roughing and processing uniformity are obtained so as to improve the various weak points of the abovementioned traditional etching effectively. Computational Experience with Piecewise Linear Relaxations for Petroleum Refinery Planning
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: bilinear, mixed-integer linear programming (MILP), nonconvex, nonlinear programming (NLP), piecewise linear relaxation, refinery planning
Refinery planning optimization is a challenging problem as regards handling the nonconvex bilinearity, mainly due to pooling operations in processes such as crude oil distillation and product blending. This work investigated the performance of several representative piecewise linear (or piecewise affine) relaxation schemes (referred to as McCormick, bm, nf5, and nf6t) and de (which is a new approach proposed based on eigenvector decomposition) that mainly give rise to mixed-integer optimization programs to convexify a bilinear term using predetermined univariate partitioning for instances of uniform and non-uniform partition sizes. The computational results showed that applying these schemes improves the relaxation tightness compared to only applying convex and concave envelopes as estimators. Uniform partition sizes typically perform better in terms of relaxation solution quality and convergence behavior. It was also seen that there is a limit on the number of partitions that contribu... Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: 3D deformity treatment, clear aligner, dentofacial deformity, digital orthodontic, surgery-first orthognathic approach (SFOA)
Orthognathic surgery and orthodontic treatment are required for patients with dentofacial deformities to obtain an ideal facial esthetic with good functioning. Recently, characterized by the surgery-first approach, an integrated orthodontic−surgical treatment has been introduced as an emerging solution to dentofacial deformity treatment. The surgery-first approach is regarded to have less treatment time and quicker enhancement of a facial profile than the conventional orthodontic−surgical treatment. Moreover, the recent advances in computing and imaging have allowed the adoption of 3-dimensional (3D) virtual planning protocols in orthognathic surgery as well as digital orthodontic treatment, which enables a paradigm shift when realizing virtual planning properly. These techniques then allow the surgeon and orthodontist to collaborate, plan, and simulate the dentofacial deformity treatment before performing the whole procedure. Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: Arena, make-to-order, outbound logistics, Simulation, Supply Chain, temporal consolidation
Shipment consolidation is one of main initiatives to reduce CO2 emissions and transportation cost. It reduces the number of shipments per customer and reduces transportation costs by using larger shipments. This paper investigates the temporal consolidation process in a central consolidation center in a make-to-order supply chain. This research was motivated by a case study of a design furniture company that has many suppliers and customers in large parts of Europe. Simulation was used to check the effect of a new and a special time-based temporal consolidation on the response time in outbound logistics. A soft delivery deadline that is less than the average lead time was used because of the long lead time. Arena Software was used to model the supply chain in order to find the best circumstances to use consolidation. Results showed that temporal consolidation could be more effective when order preparation time is with larger variability. The useful waiting is more when there is at leas... [more]

Subject: Planning & Scheduling
Keywords: cloud computing, CloudSim, resource utilization, SLA, task scheduling
According to the research, many task scheduling approaches have been proposed like GA, ACO, etc., which have improved the performance of the cloud data centers concerning various scheduling parameters. The task scheduling problem is NP-hard, as the key reason is the number of solutions/combinations grows exponentially with the problem size, e.g., the number of tasks and the number of computing resources. Thus, it is always challenging to have complete optimal scheduling of the user tasks. In this research, we proposed an adaptive load-balanced task scheduling (ALTS) approach for cloud computing. The proposed task scheduling algorithm maps all incoming tasks to the available VMs in a load-balanced way to reduce the makespan, maximize resource utilization, and adaptively minimize the SLA violation.
