Pyraclostrobin Removal in Pilot-Scale Horizontal Subsurface Flow Constructed Wetlands and in Porous Media Filters

Pyraclostrobin is a fungicide extensively used for the control of various fungal diseases and is frequently detected in environmental samples. Natural systems, such as constructed wetlands (CWs) and gravity filters, are effective and environmentally friendly treatment systems, which can reduce or eliminate pesticides from the environment. The aim of this study was to investigate the capacity of two pilot-scale CWs (porous media: cobbles and fine gravel, planted with Phragmites australis) and six gravity filters (filling material: bauxite, carbonate gravel and zeolite) to remove pyraclostrobin from polluted water originating from spraying equipment rinsing sites. For this, experiments were conducted to test the performance of the above natural systems in removing this fungicide. Microbiological Control in Decontamination of Sludge from Wastewater Treatment Plant

Dynamics of the microbiological indicators of fresh sludge from wastewater treatment plants with a concentration of CaO, 10% and 20%, and ash, −30% and 50%, and treated with quicklime, ash, and microbial fertilizer for a 50-day period of composting were studied. The influence of temperature, water content, and oxygen on the development of microbes was established in laboratory conditions. Microbiological analysis included the determination of non-pathogenic (non-spore-forming bacteria, bacilli, actinomycetes, micromycetes, bacteria digesting mineral nitrogen), and pathogenic (Salmonella, Listeria, Escherichia coli, Enterococcus, Clostridium perfringens) microorganisms. It has become a valuable tool for tumor and tissue imaging, due to its ease of operation and high mass resolution, but it still has vast room for development in the instrumentation of larger proteins in some tissues. Effect of Biochar and Microbial Inoculation on P, Fe, and Zn Bioavailability in a Calcareous Soil

To identify effective ways of increasing the yield of crops grown in nutrient-poor calcareous soils, the combined effects of biochar addition and inoculation with plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on wheat growth and soil properties were investigated under rhizobox conditions. Measured soil properties included pH, electrical conductivity (EC), organic matter content (OM), the availability of P, Fe, and Zn in the rhizosphere, and the uptake of these elements by plants. Combined biochar addition and microbial inoculation were shown to significantly increase the concentration of available forms of P, Fe, and Zn in the soil when compared to non-biochar treatments. Impact of Seasonal Variation and Processing Methods on the Cassava-Derived Dietary Cyanide Poisoning, Nutritional Status, and Konzo Appearance in South-Kivu, Eastern D.R. Congo

This study aimed at evaluating the impact of seasons on the nutritional status and on dietary cassava-related cyanide exposure in Burhinyi and Idjwi, two areas in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, witnessing similarly high cassava-derived cyanide poisoning but differently affected by konzo and malnutrition. Nowadays, a general interest in improving health in order to achieve better conditions of life is increasing. Diet is a complex factor affecting health conditions. We analysed the biological activities of three types of alcohol-free lager beer (a blond, a pale-blond and a stout beer) as well as epicatechin gallate (ECG) as one of their most abundant phenols with the aim of revealing them as nutraceuticals. Pharmaceutical products that mix natural raw materials are subject to unavoidable contamination with microorganisms from the environment and animals. This study focused on the effect of radiation on the quality of primary packaged pills, which are crude drug products. The pills, which were sealed in a sack for primary packaging laminated with polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene, and aluminum foil, were irradiated by gamma rays or electron beam (EB). The survival counts of bacteria were reduced to 103 CFU/g or less by 6 kGy of irradiation. The counts of the spore-forming bacteria Bacillus megaterium, B. cereus, and Brevibacillus brevis in the pills were reduced to not over 100 CFU/g after 10 kGy irradiation. A novel endo-β-1,4-mannanase gene was cloned from a novel actinomycetes, Nonomuraea jabiensis ID06-379, isolated from soil, overexpressed as an extracellular protein (47.8 kDa) in Streptomyces lividans 1326. This new endo-1,4-β-mannanase gene (manNj6-379) is encoded by 445-amino acids. The ManNj6-379 consists of a 28-residue signal peptide and a carbohydrate-binding module of family 2 belonging to the glycoside hydrolase (GH) family 5, with 59−77% identity to GH5 mannan endo-1,4-β-mannanase. The recombinant ManNj6-379 displayed an optimal pH of 6.5 with pH stability ranging between 5.5 and 7.0 and was stable for 120 min at 50 °C and lower temperatures. The optimal temperature for activity was 70 °C. An enzymatic hydrolysis assay revealed that ManNj6-379 could hydrolyze commercial β-mannan and biomass containing mannan.

The Content of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Slavonska slanina—Traditionally Smoked and Dry-Cured Bacon

SUMOylation Regulates BmNPV Replication by Moderating PKIP Intracellular Localization

SUMOylation is a reversible covalent process between a small ubiquitin-like modifier (SUMO) and its target protein and has become a crucial regulator of protein functions. Here, we report that Bombyx mori nucleopolyhedrovirus (BmNPV) may take advantage of the host SUMOylation system to enhance its own replication, similar to many other viruses. Both the knockdown of BmSUMO by RNAi and chemical blocking by ginkgolic acid both impaired BmNPV replication. Using site mutation and pull-down assays, we found that lysine K70 of the protein kinase-interacting protein (PKIP), which is conserved in all Alphabaculoviruses, was modified by SUMO. Mutation of K70 in PKIP led to its translocation from the cytoplasm to the nucleus. Knockout and rescue experiments showed that the rescue of PKIP mutant virus with wild-type PKIP restored BmNPV replication to the normal level, but this was not true for the K70R mutation. Functional Compounds from Banana Peel Used to Decrease Oxidative Stress Effects

Banana peel, a little-used waste, contains a high amount of biologically active compounds. The aim of the study is to demonstrate in vitro, the antioxidant, cytotoxic, and antimicrobial effects of hydroalcoholic extracts from yellow (BP) and red (BPR) banana peels. The analysis of the extracts by Capillary Zone Electrophoresis (CZE) has confirmed the presence of several bioactive compounds. BPR has a higher in vitro antioxidant activity than BP, which correlates with a significant cytotoxic, antimicrobial effect, with a UVA/UVB rate of 0.9. In the case of BPR, the results confirm the presence of isoquercitrin and kaempferol in a 1:3 ratio. The bioactive compounds from the extracts have shown a different interaction with HCT-8 cell lines and with tested bacterial strains with pathogenic properties. Development and Evaluation of Hydrogel Wound Dressings Loaded with Herbal Extracts

The current study aimed to develop carbomer based hydrogel dressings, incorporating ethanolic extracts of Rosmarinus officinalis aerial parts, Achillea millefolium and Calendula officinalis flowers. The pharmaceutical properties of the obtained hydrogels, as well as their texture and antimicrobial activity, were further evaluated. Five wound dressing formulations based on carbopol were prepared. Thermal ablation of tumors is a minimally invasive technique more and more employed in cancer treatments. The main shortcomings of this technique are, on the one hand, the risk of an incomplete ablation, and on the other hand, the destruction of the surrounding healthy tissue. In this work, thermal ablation of a spherical hepatocellular carcinoma tumor (HCC) surrounded by healthy tissue is modeled. A modified porous media-based bioheat model is employed, including porosity variability from tumor core to healthy tissue, following experimental in vivo measures. Combinations of indigenous ingredients lacking in certain essential amino acids could be used to obtain a protein isolate with a better amino acid profile that can be used as a functional food ingredient and suitable raw material for the food industry. Functional properties and amino acid profile of Bambara groundnut and Moringa oleifera leaf protein complex and its precursors (Bambara groundnut protein isolates (BGNPI) and Moringa oleifera leaf protein isolate (MOLPI)) were evaluated. The protein, fat, ash, carbohydrate, and moisture content of the protein isolates and complex ranged from 39.42 to 63.51%, 2.19 to 11.52%, 1.60 to 7.09%, 24.07 to 51.29%, and 2.61 to 9.57%, respectively, and differed significantly (p < 0.05) from one another. The total amino acids of the protein isolates and complex were 75.11, 50.00, and 71.83 g/100 g, respectively. Chronic Helicobacter pylori infection produces several lesions in the human stomach, which can progress to chronic atrophic gastritis and gastric cancer. To date, there is very little information on gene expression in chronic atrophic gastritis and its relationship with progression to gastric cancer. In this study, we performed a gene expression analysis during chronic atrophic gastritis in order to identify possible biomarkers that allow an early diagnosis of gastric cancer. We studied biopsies from patients with chronic atrophic gastritis and gastric cancer. The biopsies were analyzed by a gene expression microarray and corroborated by qPCR and validated through immunohistochemistry. Our results revealed that gene expression profiles in patients with chronic atrophic gastritis showed molecular changes of the gastric mucosa, leading to gastric cancer. Known for its high nutritional and medicinal value, okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) is commonly used for replacing plasma and expanding blood volume in humans. It is a major economic crop cultivated in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. The present study aimed to investigate and evaluate the nutritional properties and prospective applications of the consumable parts of okra. The total ash content (mineral content), carbohydrate, crude fiber, fat, protein, and moisture fractions of okra pod aqueous extract were determined. The results show that okra aqueous extract contained 84.670−87.650% moisture, 1.514−1.197% ash, 7.857−8.261% carbohydrate, 2.367−3.410% crude protein, and 6.781−8.314% crude fiber. Okra was determined to have high nutritional value, with γ-tocopherol and α-tocopherol contents about 2.67 mg/100 g and 1.62 mg/100 g, respectively.
