Thermal Performance Enhancement in Flat Plate Solar Collector Solar Water Heater: A Review
October 6, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: flat-plate collector, heat-transfer enhancement using vibration, infrasound, solar water heater, thermal performance
Various studies to improve the thermal performance of flat plate solar collector (FPSC) solar water heater have been conducted, and more are currently in progress. This study aims to review existing methods on thermal performance enhancement for FPSC and discuss on heat-transfer enhancement using vibration and its potential application for FPSC. Ten methods for improving thermal performance are identified, which include applications of nanofluids, absorber coatings, phase change materials (PCM), thermal performance enhancers, FPSC design modifications, polymer materials, heat loss reduction, mini and micro channel and heat-transfer enhancement using vibration. An examination of heat-transfer enhancement using vibration in low frequency ranges for an evacuated-tube solar collector (ETSC) solar water heater system showed that it can potentially achieve heat-transfer enhancement of up to 78%. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of research on the applications of heat-transfer enhancement... [more]

Development of Test Procedures Based on Chaotic Advection for Assessing Polymer Performance in High-Solids Tailings Applications
September 23, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: compressive yield stress, consolidation, dewatering, flocculants, inline flocculation, polyacrylamides
Post-thickener polymer addition to initiate rapid tailings dewatering has gained considerable interest for tailings storage facility (TSF) management. However, the highly viscous and non-Newtonian rheology of dense suspensions presents unique challenges for mixing with polymer solutions. Such mixing is highly inefficient, often resulting in polymer overdosing and wide variations in deposited tailings characteristics, with the potential to significantly compromise TSF performance. In this study, a new type of mixer based on the principles of chaotic advection was used for treating kaolin suspensions with high molecular weight (MW) anionic copolymer solutions. Chaotic advection imparts efficient mixing by gently stretching and folding flows in a controlled manner, as opposed to random, high-shear flows associated with turbulent mixing, and this lower shear stress allows for the controlled formation of larger aggregate structures with vastly improved dewatering characteristics. A pre-cond... [more]

Relative Effect of Additional Solid Media on Bubble Hydrodynamics in Bubble Column and Airlift Reactors towards Mass Transfer Enhancement
September 23, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: airlift reactor, bubble column, bubble hydrodynamic, mass transfer, solid media
Many researchers have focused on multi-phase reactor development for improving mass transfer performance. However, solid particle addition in gas−liquid contactor for better oxygen mass transfer performance is still limited. Hence, this study aims to analyze the relative effect of different types of local solid media on the bubble hydrodynamic characteristics towards mass transfer enhancement in bubble columns (BCR) and airlift reactors (ALR). This was investigated by varying solid media types (ring, sphere, cylinder, and square), solid loadings (0%−15%), and superficial gas velocities (Vg) (2.6−15.3 × 10−3 m/s) in terms of the bubble hydrodynamic and oxygen mass transfer parameters. The result showed that bubble size distribution in BCR and ALR with additional plastic media was smaller than that without media addition, approximately 22%−27% and 5%−29%, respectively, due to the increase of the bubble breaking rate and the decrease of the bubble rising velocity (UB). Further, adding med... [more]

The Effects of pH Change through Liming on Soil N2O Emissions
September 23, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: lime, microbial biomass, mineral nitrogen, N2O, organic carbon, soil pH
Nitrous oxide (N2O) is an overwhelming greenhouse gas and agricultural soils, particularly acidic soils, are the main source of its release to the atmosphere. To ameliorate acidic soil condition, liming materials are added as an amendment. However, the impact of liming materials has not been well addressed in terms of exploring the effect of soil pH change on N2O emissions. In the present study, a soil with pH 5.35 was amended with liming materials (CaMg(CO3)2, CaCO3, Ca(OH)2 and CaO) to investigate their effects on N2O emissions. The results indicate that application of liming materials reduced the magnitudes of N2O emissions. The maximum reduction of soil N2O emissions took place for Ca(OH)2 treatment when compared to the other liming materials, and was related to increasing soil pH. Mineral N, dissolved organic C, and microbial biomass C were also influenced by liming materials, but the trend was inconsistent to the soil pH change. The results suggest that N2O emission mitigation is... [more]

Unconfined Dense Plunging Jets Used for Brine Disposal from Desalination Plants
September 15, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: aeration, air entrainment, bubble penetration, dense jet, desalination, multiphase flow, plunging jet
Laboratory experiments were conducted to measure entrained air bubble penetration depth and dilution of a dense vertical unconfined plunging jet to evaluate its performance as an outfall to dilute brine from desalination plants as well as a means to aerate water column. Experiments involved neutrally buoyant or dense plunging jets discharging in quiescent receiving water. The density difference between effluent and receiving water, the plunging jet length (height above water surface), and the receiving water salinity were varied in the experiments. Observed penetration depth for neutrally buoyant jets was somewhat greater than previously reported, and increased modestly with jet density. Increasing density also resulted in an increasing number of fine bubbles descending together with the dense plume. These observations can help guide the design of plunging jets to mitigate anoxic conditions in the water column when brine is introduced to a receiving water body, as with seawater desalin... [more]

Characteristics of Gliding Arc Plasma and Its Application in Swirl Flame Static Instability Control
September 15, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: discharge characteristics, gliding arc plasma, static instability control, swirl flame
Based on an experimental system involving a pulsating airflow burner and gliding arc generator, the characteristics of gliding arc plasma at different flow rates and its control effect on the static instability of the swirl flame have been studied. The current, voltage, and power wave forms, as well as the simultaneous evolution of plasma topology, were measured to reveal the discharge characteristics of the gliding arc. A bandpass filter was used to capture the chemiluminescence of CH in the flame, and pressure at the burner outlet was acquired to investigate the static instability. Experimental results showed that there were two different discharge types in gliding arc plasma. With the low flow rate, the glow type discharge was sustained and the current was nearly a sine wave with hundreds of milliamperes of amplitude. With the high flow rate, the spark type discharge appeared and spikes which approached almost 1 ampere in 1 μs were found in the current waveform. The lean blowout lim... [more]

Breakup Processes and Droplet Characteristics of Liquid Jets Injected into Low-Speed Air Crossflow
August 29, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: breakup regime, droplet size, droplet velocity, liquid jet, PDA, primary breakup
The breakup processes and droplet characteristics of a liquid jet injected into a low-speed air crossflow in the finite space were experimentally investigated. The liquid jet breakup processes were recorded by high-speed photography, and phase-Doppler anemometry (PDA) was employed to measure the droplet sizes and droplet velocities. Through the instantaneous image observation, the liquid jet breakup mode could be divided into bump breakup, arcade breakup and bag breakup modes, and the experimental regime map of primary breakup processes was summarized. The transition boundaries between different breakup modes were found. The gas Weber number (Weg) could be considered as the most sensitive dimensionless parameter for the breakup mode. There was a Weg transition point, and droplet size distribution was able to change from the oblique-I-type to the C-type with an increase in Weg. The liquid jet Weber number (Wej) had little effect on droplet size distribution, and droplet size was in the... [more]

This paper presents a comparison of the impact of milling technology in the computer numerically controlled (CNC) machining centre and selective laser sintering (SLS) and on the structure and properties of solid Ti6Al4V alloy. It has been shown that even small changes in technological conditions in the SLS manufacturing variant significantly affect changes from two to nearly two and a half times in tensile and bending strengths. Both the tensile and bending strength obtained in the most favourable manufacturing variant by the SLS method is over 25% higher than in the case of cast materials subsequently processed by milling. Plug-and-play SLS conditions provide about 60% of the possibilities. Structural, tribological and electrochemical tests were carried out. In vitro biological tests using osteoblasts confirm the good tendency for the proliferation of live cells on the substrate manufactured under the most favourable SLS conditions. Subject: Other
Keywords: ERT, foam gun, microbubble, optical fiber probe, sintered plate
The hydrodynamics parameters of microbubbles in a bubble column were studied in an air−water system with a range of superficial gas velocity from 0.013 to 0.100 m/s using a differential pressure transmitter, double probe optical fiber probe, and electrical resistance tomography (ERT) technique. Two kinds of microbubble generators (foam gun, sintered plate) were used to generate microbubbles in the bubble column with a diameter of 90 mm, and to compare the effects of different foaming methods on the hydrodynamics parameters in the bubble column. The hydrodynamic behavior of the homogeneous regime and the transition regime was also studied. The results show that, by changing the microbubble-generating device, the hydrodynamic parameters in the column are changed, and both microbubble-generating devices can obtain a higher gas holdup and a narrower chord length distribution. When the foam gun is used as the gas distributor, a higher gas holdup and a narrower average bubble chord length ca... [more]

August 5, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: DPM, Euler–Lagrange approach, large coal particles, pneumatic conveying, pressure drop
As a type of airtight conveying mode, pneumatic conveying has the advantages of environmental friendliness and conveying without dust overflow. The application of the pneumatic conveying system in the field of coal particle conveying can avoid direct contact between coal particles and the atmosphere, which helps to reduce the concentration of air dust and improve environmental quality in coal production and coal consumption enterprises. In order to predict pressure drop in the pipe during the horizontal pneumatic conveying of large coal particles, the Lagrangian coupling method and DPM (discrete particle model) simulation model was used in this paper. Based on the comparison of the experimental results, the feasibility of the simulation was verified and the pressure drop in the pipe was simulated. The simulation results show that when the flow velocity is small, the simulation results of the DPM model are quite different from that of the experiment. When the flow velocity is large, the... The Effect of Temperature on the Biosorption of Dyes from Aqueous Solutions
August 5, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: biosorption, dye, temperature, Wastewater
This work is a review of scientific papers on the influence of temperature (T) on the biosorption of various dyes from aqueous solutions and wastewaters. The dyeing process of textiles is usually carried out at high temperatures, and therefore, the wastewater generated there when entering the treatment plant may still be hot. Hence, depending on the climatic conditions of a given region, the biosorption method used for their purification may occur at various temperatures. Most of the papers clearly stated the positive influence of T on biosorption, generally indicating the chemical nature of this process. At the same time, substantial number of authors confirmed the positive effect of T on the biosorption with an initial T-rise from approximately 20 °C to about 30−40 °C range; conversely, at higher temperatures, they indicated a decrease in the biosorption efficiency. Additionally, many authors clearly implied the negative impact of T on the biosorption parameters. They generally envis... [more]

This study utilizes life cycle analysis to compare three steel manufacturing off-gas utilization systems: a status quo system, which produces electricity via a low-pressure steam turbine; a combined cycle power plant (CCPP) system, which produces electricity using gas and steam turbines; and a methanol (MeOH) system, which converts coke oven gas (COG) and blast furnace gas (BFG) into MeOH (CBMeOH). This research seeks to compare the environmental impacts of each system based on equivalent raw material inputs. Since the systems have different products, system expansion is used to ensure that they have the same outputs and are therefore comparable. The system boundary consists of a combination of cradle-to-gate and gate-to-gate boundaries. The environmental effects of each system are compared at five locations—Ontario, the USA, Finland, Mexico, and China—using TRACI, CML-IA baseline, ReCiPe2016, and IMPACT2002+ in SimaPro v9. July 17, 2020 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: extensional magneto-rheology, ferrofluids, magnetic clean-up process, nanofluids, oil-spills
In this study, we propose a new way of optimising the formulation of ferrofluids for oil-spill clean-up processes, based on the rheological behaviour under extensional flow and magnetic fields. Different commercial ferrofluids (FFs), consisting of a set of six ferrofluids with different magnetic saturation and particle concentration, were characterised in a Capillary Break-Up Extensional Rheometer (CaBER) equipped with two magnetorheological cells that allow imposing a homogeneous and tunable magnetic field either parallel or perpendicular to the flow direction. The filament thinning process with different intensities and orientation of the magnetic field with respect to the flow direction was analysed, and the results showed that the perpendicular configuration did not have a significant effect on the behaviour of the ferrofluids, as in shear magnetorheometry. However, the parallel configuration allowed to determine that the formulation of ferrofluids for oil-spill cleaning processes... [more]

We have developed a novel microwave (MW) soldering system using a cylindrical single-mode TM110 MW cavity that spatially separates the electric fields at the top and bottom of the cavity and the magnetic field at the center of the cavity. This MW reactor system automatically detects the suitable resonance frequency and provides the optimum MW irradiation conditions in the cylindrical cavity via a power feedback loop. Furthermore, we investigated the temperature properties of electrodes by MW heating with the simulation of a magnetic field in the TM110 cavity toward the mounting of electronic components by MW heating. Keywords: adsorption isotherms, Alizarin Red S, chromium, cyclic process, dyes, wool
Alizarin red S (ARS) removal from wastewater using sheep wool as adsorbent was investigated. The influence of contact time, pH, adsorbent dosage, initial ARS concentration and temperature was studied. Optimum values were: pH = 2.0, contact time = 90 min, adsorbent dosage = 8.0 g/L. Removal of ARS under these conditions was 93.2%. Adsorption data at 25.0 °C and 90 min contact time were fitted to the Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms. R2 values were 0.9943 and 0.9662, respectively. Raising the temperature to 50.0 °C had no effect on ARS removal. Free wool and wool loaded with ARS were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). ARS loaded wool was used as adsorbent for removal of Cr(VI) from industrial wastewater. ARS adsorbed on wool underwent oxidation, accompanied by a simultaneous reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III). The results hold promise for wool as adsorbent of organic pollutants from wastewater, in addition to substantial self-regeneration through reduction of t... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: bentonite, recycling, solid waste management, steelmaking, sustainable materials
Steelmaking is an energy-intensive process that generates considerable amounts of by-products and wastes, which often pose major environmental and economic challenges to the steel-making industry. One of these by-products is steel dust that is produced during the separation of impurities in the smelting and refining of metals in steel-making furnaces. In this study, electric arc furnace (EAF) dust has been evaluated as a potential, low-cost additive to increase the viscosity and weight of drilling muds. Currently, the cost of drilling operations typically accounts for 50 to 80% of the exploration costs and about 30 to 80% of the subsequent field development costs. Utilization of steelmaking waste in drilling fluids formulations is aimed to produce new and optimized water-based drilling formulations, which is expected to reduce the amount of bentonite and other viscosifier additives used in the drilling formulations. The results showed that in a typical water-based drilling fluid of 8.6... [more]
