April 20, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Other
Keywords: DC fault clearing ability, improved sub-module topology, modular multilevel inverter, voltage self-balancing ability
A large number of modular multilevel converters (MMC) are connected to HVDC transmission systems nowadays. This paper aims at the short-circuit fault in the DC line of the HVDC transmission system and the problem of capacitor voltage imbalance in MMC, proposing a new type of MMC sub-module, which has both the DC fault self-clearing ability and the capacitor voltage self-balancing ability. This sub-module combines the topology of half bridge and full bridge. It uses the reverse capacitor voltage to forcibly turn off the conducting diode to block the fault current loop. At the same time, the two capacitances charge and discharge states are consistent by utilizing the operating mode of the sub-module. It is possible to directly achieve a self-balancing capacitor voltage without complex balancing voltage control. The MATLAB/Simulink simulation verifies the effectiveness of the DC fault blocking capability and capacitor voltage balance capability of the proposed sub-module.

Subject: Other
Keywords: electromagnetic induction, energy harvesting, human walking, power conditiong circuit, recurrence plot
Among the various alternative energy sources, harvesting energy from the movement of the human body has emerged as a promising technology. The interaction between the energy harvesting structure and the power conditioning circuit is nonlinear in nature, which makes selecting the appropriate design parameters a complex task. In this work, we present an electromagnetic energy harvesting system suitable for recovering energy from the movement of the lower limb joints during walking. The system under study is modeled and simulated, considering three different scenarios in which the energy source is the hip, knee, and ankle joint. The power generated by the energy harvester is estimated from kinematic data collected from an experimental gait study on a selected participant. State-space representation and Recurrence plots (RPs) are used to study the dynamical system’s behavior resulting from the interaction between the electromagnetic structure and the power conditioning circuit. Keywords: eccentricity, electric turbocharger, high-speed motor, one-way coupled analysis
As the demand for eco-friendly, high-efficiency transportation technologies increase due to climate change, a high-speed electric motor, a key component of an electric turbocharger, has been developed that can reduce emissions and increase fuel efficiency. Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute with Keyyang Precision Co., Ltd., developed a high-speed surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor. It operates at a power of 3 kW at 100,000 rpm and is intended to fit 1600 cc diesel vehicles. In this paper, the electrical and mechanical characteristics of the high-speed motor were reviewed in consideration of the effect of eccentricity among the various causes that affect vibration. It was confirmed that eccentricity affected the distribution of the electromagnetic force and inductance of the winding due to the uneven air-gap. Additional vibration was generated at the half of pole passing frequency (1666.67 Hz). Diagnosing the presence or absence of eccentricity when driving a mot... [more]

Subject: Other
Keywords: bearing currents, bearings, electrical machine, shaft voltages
The article presents a new method of counteracting shaft voltages and currents in AC electrical machines. It is based on the use of an auxiliary winding located in the stator of the machine. The design of a test stand adapted to the measurement of shaft voltages of the machine, based on the prototype of a synchronous machine with permanent magnets, has been presented. The model was used to conduct a number of laboratory tests aimed at confirming the functionality of the auxiliary winding in various operating states of the machine (including no-load and load condition during generator operation). The article focuses on demonstrating the beneficial effect of the auxiliary winding on the level of induced shaft voltages in an electric machine. In order to confirm the close dependence of the circular flux in the stator yoke on the shaft voltage, shaft voltage measurement results for various cases of external power supply of auxiliary winding forcing a circular flux are presented. Keywords: dead zone, equivalent magnetic circuit (EMC), magnetization distribution, multi-pole permanent magnet
In multi-pole permanent magnets (PMs) such a ring-type PMs, as multi-poles are magnetized in one segment, the ends of each pole are weakly magnetized, which is known as the dead zone. Thus, when analyzing characteristics of the motor with multi-pole PMs, accurate results can be obtained by considering the magnetization distribution. For this reason, this paper proposed an equivalent magnetic circuit (EMC) for external-rotor surface-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motors (SPMSMs) considering the dead zone to analyze the effects of the dead zone on the characteristics of the motor. As the magnetization in the dead zone gradually decreases toward the end of the pole, the magnetization distribution is assumed to have a trapezoidal shape. To describe the magnetization distribution, each pole was divided into several elements, and the equivalent residual magnetic flux density was applied to the elements of the dead zone. Finally, the validity of the proposed EMC was verified by comparin... [more]

Keywords: BIM, FM, infrastructure management, IoT
New technologies regarding construction, materials and facility management have led to the successful implementation of smart and more sustainable buildings. This is of special interest for the management of large and complex public buildings. However, most of these types of buildings were built in Europe during the previous century, when those technologies were still a matter of research. The appearance of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and the combined use of it with other advances in Facility Management (FM) as well as Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data and others, has opened the door to the possible transformation of such type of buildings into more efficient smart buildings without very large investments. In this study, this was studied thoroughly. In addition, the advantages and possibilities were assessed on a case study performed in the Civil Engineering School at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid built in 1969. The main objective of the paper was to show the details and... [more]

This paper shows a new concept to generate medium voltage (MV) in wind power application to avoid an additional transformer. Therefore, the generator must be redesigned with additional constraints and a new topology for the power rectifier system by using multiple low voltage (LV) power rectifiers connected in series and parallel to increase the DC output voltage. The combination of parallel and series connection of rectifiers is further introduced as DC-cascade. With the resulting DC-cascade, medium output voltage is achieved with low voltage rectifiers and without a bulky transformer. This approach to form a DC-cascade reduces the effort required to achieve medium DC voltage with a simple rectifier system. In this context, a suitable DC-cascade control was presented and verified with a laboratory test setup. A gearless synchronous generator, which is highly segmented so that each segment can be connected to its own power rectifier, is investigated. Due to the mixed AC and DC voltage... [more]

Keywords: creep test, cumulative ringing count, Energy, porous coal body, water content
Water content is an important factor in the deformation-destruction process of coal bodies. To analyze the influence of water on the creep acoustic emission (AE) characteristics of coal rock surrounding a borehole, we conducted graded loading creep AE tests of single-hole specimens with different water contents (0%, 4%, 8% and water-saturation) under uniaxial loading. The findings include the following: the water content affects the creep mechanical properties of the coal body around a borehole. The creep transient strain and steady-state strain increased exponentially with rising water content; the saturated specimen showed the highest increase, reaching 44.5% and 28.6%, respectively. The specimen water content affected the cumulative ringing count (CRC) and the axial strain during creep. The axial strain increased with rising water content, the CRC increased linearly with rising axial strain. The higher the water content, the greater the CRC rise. At different stress levels, the CRC... [more]

Air conditioning systems have become essential equipment in many buildings. However, fire safety design and management in buildings rarely consider whether to turn the system off or keep it on in a fire. This study ignites a stack of wood in a room center or corner to explore the influence of air inlet actions of a fan coil unit (FCU) with the door opened or closed. Simulation results using Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) demonstrate that the heat release rate (HRR) and room temperature obviously decrease when the room doorway is closed, regardless of whether the air conditioner is turned on. The air supply for combustion is poor. When the door of the room is opened, turning off the air conditioner can effectively reduce the HRR and the room temperature in the early stages of fire growth. However, along with the fire growth, turning on air conditioning can help decrease the heat radiation feedback and the consequent HRR. Therefore, the conclusion that air conditioning always enhances a f... [more]

Keywords: AC Joule loss, frozen permeability, MSO coil, outer-rotor, pole and slot combination
This paper proposes a design guideline for selecting the pole and slot combination of an outer-rotor permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) using a maximum slot occupation (MSO) coil. Because the MSO coil has a large conductor area, the AC Joule loss in the conductors may be increased at high frequencies. To ensure high-efficiency for the PMSM, it is necessary to reduce the loss. Thus, it is important to select the pole- and slot- combination that has the minimum AC Joule loss. The loss is caused by skin/proximity effects and variations in the slot leakage flux. The skin effect is due to the armature winding and the variation in the slot leakage flux is due to the field flux. A method for separating the AC Joule loss due to each component using the frozen permeability method is proposed. Based on the proposed method, the effect of each cause on the loss at various pole- and slot- combinations is analyzed in this study.

BIPV (Building Integrated Photovoltaic) system is a building envelope technology that generates energy by converting solar energy into electricity. However, after producing electrical energy, the remaining solar energy is transferred as heat, raising the temperature at the rear of the BIPV module, and reducing electrical efficiency. On the other hand, a PVT (Photovoltaic Thermal) collector is a device that generates electricity from a PV module and at the same time uses the heat transferred to the air layer inside the collector. In general, the performance of air-type PVT collectors is based on energy analysis using the first law of thermodynamics. Since this performance does not take into account the loss amount, it is not the actual amount of power generation and preheat of the collector that can be used. Therefore, an exergy analysis based on the second law of thermodynamics considering the amount of energy loss must be performed. In this paper, an air-type PVT collector to which pe... [more]

The aim of this study is the presentation of the results of an in-lab comparative study of electrical and thermal monitoring of artificially polluted, HTV-textured silicone rubber insulators, with different pollution levels. This work is a preliminary study of an in-situ monitoring of 400 kV SiR textured in a polluted environment. The results showed that the rms leakage current magnitude and pulses, and the average dissipated power depended on the pollution levels and the dry-bands formation. The discharge activity and their nature are governed by the pollution level and the voltage. A differentiation and a quantification between dry-band discharge onset and dry-band arc inception is highlighted.

Keywords: core loss, finite element method (FEM), linear machines, linear magnetic gear, permanent magnet machines
In this study, analysis of core-loss occurring in the magnetic flux modulation core of a linear magnetic gear and the core of each mover is presented, using an analytical method. Losses in electric machines were generally calculated and analyzed using the finite element method (FEM). However, in the case of core-loss, the exact loss value could not be calculated using FEM data. Therefore, we considered the harmonic component of the air-gap magnetic flux density waveform with the modified Steinmetz equation, and performed a more accurate core-loss analysis with magnetic behavior analysis. Thus, we performed a calculated core-loss characteristic comparison with the FEM and the modified Steinmetz equation.

Assessing the potential of advanced driver assistance systems requires developing dedicated control algorithms for controlling the longitudinal speed of automated vehicles over time. In this paper, a multiobjective off-line optimal control approach for planning the speed of the following vehicle in adaptive cruise control (ACC) driving is proposed. The implemented method relies on the principle of global optimality fostered by dynamic programming (DP) and aims to minimize propelling energy consumption and enhance passenger comfort. The powertrain model and onboard control system are integrated within the proposed car-following optimization framework. The retained ACC approach ensures that the distance between the following vehicle and the preceding vehicle is always maintained within allowed limits. The flexibility of the proposed method is demonstrated here through ease of implementation on a wide range of powertrain categories, including a conventional vehicle propelled by an interna... [more]

Keywords: cogging torque, finite element analysis, PMBLDC motor, shifting angle, virtual work method
Cogging torque is a critical dilemma in Permanent Magnet Brushless DC (PMBLDC) motors. In medium-low power PMBLDC motors, redundant vibrations and forbidding noises arise as a result of the harmonic magnetic forces created by cogging torque. This paper introduces a simple approach for minimizing cogging torque in PMBLDC motors by applying placement irregularities in rotor magnets. An angle shift in the rotor magnets in surface-mounted PMBLDC motors helps to attain magnet displacement. This displacement imparts an asymmetrical magnet structure to the rotor. Maintaining pole arc to pole pitch ratio (L/τ) of between 0.6 and 0.8, shifting angles from 1° to 8° were considered in order to analyze the effect of the angle shift on the rotor magnets. An analytical expression was also derived for finding the shifting angle with the minimum cogging torque in the PMBLDC motor by using the Virtual Work Method (VWM). The optimization of the shifting angle with minimum cogging torque was investigated... [more]

The protection systems of ship generators enable them to eliminate potential failures that pose a significant threat to the safety of the crew and the use of the ship. However, due to the fact that marine classification societies do not require the protection of generators against the loss of excitation, such protection is only used sporadically. This article presents an LOE (loss of excitation) analysis of ship generators that operate in parallel. This analysis is supported by simulations and experimental research. The test results show that the positions of the operating points of each generator are interrelated, and changes in the excitation of one (damaged) generator cause automatic changes in the excitation, as well as changes in electromagnetic and energy processes, in the second (efficient) generator. An LOE in one generator causes a dangerous increase in armature currents in both generators. The results of this study prove that the lack of LOE protection at lower levels of exci... [more]

The formation and evolution of (normal) fault affect the formation and preservation of some reservoirs, such as fault-block reservoirs and faulted reservoirs. Strain energy is one of the parameters describing the strength of tectonic activity. Thus, the formation and evolution of normal fault can be studied by analyzing the variation of strain energy in strata. In this work, we used physical simulation to study the formation and evolution of normal fault from a strain energy perspective. Based on the similarity principle, we designed and conducted three repeated physical simulation experiments according to the normal fault in the Yanchang Formation of Jinhe oilfield, Ordos Basin, China, and obtained dip angle, fault displacement, and strain energy via the velocity profile recorded by high-resolution Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV). As a result, the strain energy is mainly released in the normal fault line zone, and can thus serve as channels for oil/gas migration and escape routes con... [more]

In most high power industrial applications, the low switching frequency modulations (LSFM) are usually implemented to reduce power loss and heat dissipation pressure. However, there are some unexpected influences caused by the low order harmonic sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM), such as the imbalanced submodule power in cascaded half-bridge inverter (CHB) and limited output power capability in H-bridge neutral-point-clamped (HNPC) converter. This paper starts by generalizing the basic characteristic of two-level SPWM, then deeply investigates the influences of low-frequency modulation on the operation of the circuits. They are classified into three mechanisms and generally named as harmonic overlap effect (HOE). The corresponding solutions to copy with the mechanisms are proposed and verified in some topologies through high-power simulations in simulations. In addition, a comprehensive summary of the influences and solutions of these effects on typical high power converters is... [more]

Undoubtedly, Low-Altitude Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are becoming more common in marine applications. Equipped with a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Real-Time Kinematic (RTK) receiver for highly accurate positioning, they perform camera and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) measurements. Unfortunately, these measurements may still be subject to large errors-mainly due to the inaccuracy of measurement of the optical axis of the camera or LiDAR sensor. Usually, UAVs use a small and light Inertial Navigation System (INS) with an angle measurement error of up to 0.5∘ (RMSE). The methodology for spatial orientation angle correction presented in the article allows the reduction of this error even to the level of 0.01∘ (RMSE). It can be successfully used in coastal and port waters. To determine the corrections, only the Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC) and an image of the coastline are needed.

This paper analyzes how over-coupled coils affect odd harmonic current and electromagnetic interference (EMI) in a wireless power transfer (WPT) system, and proposes design considerations for series inductors to solve the EMI problem. When the air gap of the coils of the WPT system decreases below a certain level and the coils are over-coupled, the odd harmonic component of the input impedance of the system decreases and odd harmonic currents increase. The increase in the odd harmonic components current quickly aggravates the EMI issues. To solve the EMI problem of the over-coupled WPT system, additional series inductors were applied to the system, and considerations for designing the series inductors were analyzed. When designing additional series inductors, power transfer efficiency, maximum power transfer, input impedance and odd harmonic components current must be considered. Using simulations and experiments, it was confirmed that the WPT system designed with analyzed consideratio... [more]

Within large turboalternators, the excessive local temperatures and spatially distributed temperature differences can accelerate the deterioration of electrical insulation as well as lead to deformation of components, which may cause major machine malfunctions. In order to homogenise the stator axial temperature distribution whilst reducing the maximum stator temperature, this paper presents a novel non-uniform radial ventilation ducts design methodology. To reduce the huge computational costs resulting from the large-scale model, the stator is decomposed into several single ventilation duct subsystems (SVDSs) along the axial direction, with each SVDS connected in series with the medium of the air gap flow rate. The calculation of electromagnetic and thermal performances within SVDS are completed by finite element method (FEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD), respectively. To improve the optimization efficiency, the radial basis function neural network (RBFNN) model is employed... [more]
