Measurement and Calibration of the Parameters for Discrete Element Method Modeling of Rapeseed
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: DEM, interaction properties, rapeseed, response surface methodology, Simulation
The discrete element method (DEM) for modeling the behavior of particulate material is highly dependent on the use of appropriate and accurate parameters. In this study, a seed metering DEM simulation was used to measure, calibrate, and verify the physical and interactional parameters of rapeseed. The coefficients of restitution and static friction between rapeseeds and three common materials (aluminum alloy, acrylic, and high-density polyethylene) were measured using free drop and sliding ramp tests, respectively. The angle of repose was determined using a hollow cylinder experiment, which was duplicated using a DEM simulation, to examine the effects of static and rolling friction coefficients on the angle of repose. Response surface optimization was performed to determine the optimized model parameters using a Box−Behnken design test. A metering device was made with three materials, and rapeseed seeding was simulated at different working speeds to verify the calibrated parameters. Th... [more]

Ontology-Based Process Modelling-with Examples of Physical Topologies
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: computational engineering, digital twin, model-based, process simulation
Reductionism and splitting application domain into disciplines and identify the smallest required model-granules, termed ”basic entity” combined with systematic construction of the behaviour equations for the basic entities, yields a systematic approach to process modelling. We do not aim toward a single modelling domain, but we enable to address specific application domains and object inheritance. We start with reductionism and demonstrate how the basic entities are depending on the targeted application domain. We use directed graphs to capture process models, and we introduce a new concept, which we call ”tokens” that enables us to extend the context beyond physical systems. The network representation is hierarchical so as to capture complex systems. The interacting basic entities are defined in the leave nodes of the hierarchy, making the overall model the interacting networks in the leave nodes. Multi-disciplinary and multi-scale models result in a network of networks. We identify... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cell production, confluence estimation, deep learning, laboratory automation, mesenchymal stem cells
Laboratory automation is a key driver in biotechnology and an enabler for powerful new technologies and applications. In particular, in the field of personalized therapies, automation in research and production is a prerequisite for achieving cost efficiency and broad availability of tailored treatments. For this reason, we present the StemCellDiscovery, a fully automated robotic laboratory for the cultivation of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) in small scale and in parallel. While the system can handle different kinds of adherent cells, here, we focus on the cultivation of adipose-derived hMSCs. The StemCellDiscovery provides an in-line visual quality control for automated confluence estimation, which is realized by combining high-speed microscopy with deep learning-based image processing. We demonstrate the feasibility of the algorithm to detect hMSCs in culture at different densities and calculate confluences based on the resulting image. Furthermore, we show that the StemCellD... February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: baffles, output power, SCPPS, velocity uniformity
The solar chimney power plant system (abbreviated as SCPPS) is a clean and pollution-free facility for generating electric power. To improve the generating efficiency, a bank of baffles can be arranged under the collector in SCPPS. ANSYS Fluent 18.2 was used to numerically simulate 3D models of SCPPS with or without baffles, and an experimental apparatus was built for verification. There are seven different types of model discussed here: the SCPPS without baffles (prototype), and other six types of models with different baffles (a-type, b-type, c-type, d-type, e-type, and f-type). The pressure fields, temperature fields, velocity fields, and power outputs of different models under the different baffles are discussed. It is shown that the addition of baffles in the system can increase the temperature field, pressure field, velocity field, and power output to varying degrees, but b-type baffles better improve the temperature and velocity uniformity of the system, and intensify the output... Effect of Heat Resource Effectiveness Change on Rice Potential Yield in Southern China
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: climate change, heat resource effectiveness, hourly accumulated temperature simulation, rice potential yield
During the rice growing season, farmers’ decisions about cropping systems and seed varieties directly affect the utilization of heat resource, and eventually affect the potential yield. In this study, we used the hourly accumulated temperature model to calculate the available heat resource as well as the effective heat resource in southern China. We conducted a spatiotemporal analysis of the heat resource effectiveness during rice growing season and an impact assessment of heat resource effectiveness on rice potential yield and cereal yield reduction. The results showed that, during the period of 1951−2015, heat resource effectiveness generally declined in the rice cropping area of southern China. And this decrease worsened during the most recent three decades compared with the period of 1951−1980. A strong correlation was detected between heat resource effectiveness and rice potential yield in the study area. When the effective heat resource during the growing season increased by 1 °C... A Modeling Application for GHG Fluxes Estimates in Betel Nuts Plantations in Taiwan
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: betel nuts, carbon cycle, enhanced vegetation index, GHG flux measurements
Perennial woody crops could have a positive impact on carbon balance, absorbing carbon during growing season and storing it for several years, whereas annual crops do not have this particular effect. Usually, techniques for GHG (greenhouse gases) flux measurements have limited spatial representativeness, with some difficulties to extend leaf measurements to field scale. Models, especially if supported by remote sensing data, allow for upscaling the monitoring of these fluxes. The aim of this work was to evaluate the carbon fluxes (gross primary production, GPP; net ecosystem production, NEP) of the betel nut cultivars in Taiwan by a vegetation photosynthesis model (VPM). The model permitted estimating seasonal dynamics of GPP in a moist tropical evergreen forest. These plantations are very common in Taiwan and their role could be significant in environmental and development policies even though, until now, the consumption of the fruit of this tree is at the center of controversy due to... Effect of Flow Rate on Turbulence Dissipation Rate Distribution in a Multiphase Pump
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: flow rate, multiphase pump, numerical simulation, pressurized unit, turbulence dissipation rate
The turbulence dissipation will cause the increment of energy loss in the multiphase pump and deteriorate the pump performance. In order to research the turbulence dissipation rate distribution characteristics in the pressurized unit of the multiphase pump, the spiral axial flow type multiphase pump is researched numerically in the present study. This research is focused on the turbulence dissipation rate distribution characteristics in the directions of inlet to outlet, hub to rim, and in the circumferential direction of the rotating impeller blades. Numerical simulation based on the RANS (Reynolds averaged Navier−Stokes equations) and the k-ω SST (Shear Stress Transport) turbulence model has been carried out. The numerical method is verified by comparing the numerical results with the experimental data. Results show that the regions of the large turbulence dissipation rate are mainly at the inlet and outlet of the rotating impeller and static impeller, while it is almost zero from th... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, Computational Fluid Dynamics, conductivity, eccentric impeller position, hybrid approach, mixing time, prediction, stirred vessel, validation
Multipurpose stirring and blending vessels equipped with various impeller systems are indispensable in the pharmaceutical industry because of the high flexibility necessary during multiproduct manufacturing. On the other hand, process scale-up and scale-down during process development and transfer from bench or pilot to manufacturing scale, or the design of so-called scale-down models (SDMs), is a difficult task due to the geometrical differences of used vessels. The present work comprises a hybrid approach to predict mixing times from pilot to manufacturing scale for geometrical nonsimilar vessels equipped with single top, bottom or multiple eccentrically located impellers. The developed hybrid approach is based on the experimental characterization of mixing time in the dedicated equipment and evaluation of the vessel-averaged energy dissipation rate employing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) using single-phase steady-state simulations. Obtained data are consequently used to develop... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: discrete element method, flight configuration, industrial wastewaters, operational conditions, rotary drum dryer
In this study, a new type of rotary dryer filled with inert alumina ceramic bead (ACB) fillers was introduced to treat the industrial wastewater, e.g., the high-salt wastewater and landfill leachate. Numerical simulations based on the Discrete Element Method (DEM) on the motion trajectory of ACB fillers in the rotary dryer were conducted, and the parameters of flight structure, rotational speed, and filling degree on the dynamic behavior of ACB fillers were optimized. Under various rotational speeds and filling degrees, the experimental results fit the numerical-simulated results very well. The optimized flight configuration was the straight flights with a length of 65 mm, and the optimized rotational speed and filling degree were 35 rpm and 15%, respectively. Under the optimized condition, both the response variables, the mass of particles in the airborne phase (MAP) and the percentage of occupied area in the airborne region (OAR), have the optimal values, in which the dryer will have... Application of Biochar in Stormwater Treatment: Experimental and Modeling Investigation
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: biochar, heavy metals, HYDRUS modeling, stormwater treatment
This research investigated the removal of heavy metal ions (Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn) and metalloid (As) common to stormwater runoff onto biochar-based media arranged in multiple configurations. Laboratory scale column experiments were conducted to quantify heavy metal removal efficiencies using sand, biochar, and nZVI-modified biochar (BC-nZVI) in four media configurations: a homogeneous mixture of sand and biochar (BCM); biochar layered in sand (BCL); BC-nZVI layered in sand (BCZ); and sand as a control. An inverse modeling approach was implemented to measured moisture and experimental data to determine media hydraulic parameters (θr, θs, α, n and Ks) and adsorption coefficients. The experiment was conducted using laboratory synthesized stormwater over 200 days at a rate of 5 cm/day. BCZ exhibited an excellent removal (99%) of As due to the high attachment to nZVI, via surface complexations. Biochar with abundant surface oxygen functional groups exhibited a great (99%) removal of Cd and Zn... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CFD–DEM coupling method, Fluid Dynamics, heat transfer, liquid-solid stirred tanks
The heat transfer and hydrodynamics of particle flows in stirred tanks are investigated numerically in this paper by using a coupled CFD−DEM method combined with a standard k-e turbulence model. Particle−fluid and particle−particle interactions, and heat transfer processes are considered in this model. The numerical method is validated by comparing the calculated results of our model to experimental results of the thermal convection of gas-particle flows in a fluidized bed published in the literature. This coupling model of computational fluid dynamics and discrete element (CFD−DEM) method, which could calculate the particle behaviors and individual particle temperature clearly, has been applied for the first time to the study of liquid-solid flows in stirred tanks with convective heat transfers. This paper reports the effect of particles on the temperature field in stirred tanks. The effects on the multiphase flow convective heat transfer of stirred tanks without and with baffles as w... In situ Bio-Methanation (BM) is a recently developed biogas upgrading technique which finds application also in the Power to Gas (P2G) field. In this study a novel configuration of BM digester, the randomly packed Gas Stirred Tank Reactor (GSTR), was modelled. A 49 L reactor, in thermophilic conditions (55 °C) and at atmospheric pressure, was filled up with random packing on which the microbial populations could adhere. The feedstock used was Second Cheese Whey (SCW), liquid waste of cheese factories, rich in lactose (38 g/L), and its flowrate was chosen to obtain a Hydraulic Retention Time (HRT) of 30 days. The process was analyzed for different hydrogen inlet flowrates of 10 mL/min and 50 mL/min. The produced biogas was also recirculated in the reactor in order to transfer, into the liquid phase, as much hydrogen as possible. The model parameters were estimated by means of stationary state information of the reactor working without hydrogen injection, while a dynamical fitting was ne... [more]

February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: discrete element method, process analysis, rotary tillage, soil adhesion, wet clay soil
To analyze the process of wet clay soil adhering to the rotary tillage part during rotary tillage in paddy field, simulation tests were carried out based on the discrete element method (DEM) in this study. The Plackett-Burman (PB) test was applied to obtain simulation parameters that significantly affected the soil adhesion mass. The Box-Behnken design (BBD) based on the principle of response surface method (RSM) was used to establish a regression model between significant parameters and soil adhesion mass. The soil adhesion mass obtained from the actual soil bin test as the response value was brought into the regression model. The optimal simulation parameters were obtained: the particle-particle coefficient of rolling friction, the particle-geometry coefficient of static friction, and the particle-particle JKR (Johnson-Kendall-Roberts) surface energy were 0.09, 0.81, and 61.55 J·m−2, respectively. Simulation of Shear-Thickening Liquid Transfer between U-Shaped Cell and Flat Plate
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cell optimization, gravure printing, shear-thickening liquid, VOF method
Based on the actual measurement of the shear-thickening properties of water-based inks, in order to improve the ink transfer rate, the PLIC (Piecewise Linear Interface Construction) interface tracking method and the VOF (Volume of Fluid) method are used to simulate the transfer process of the shear-thickening liquid between the U-shaped cell and the upwardly moving plate. The effects of substrate surface wettability, cell contact angle, and cell depth on liquid transfer were studied. The results showed that all can increase the liquid transfer rate, and the change of the cell contact angle also led to the difference in the breaking time of the liquid filament. In addition, the shallow plate effect was discovered in the study of cell depth. The shallow plate effect is a phenomenon by which the amount of liquid transferred and the liquid transfer rate are greatly improved when the depth of the cell decreases to a certain limit value. In addition, for the U-shaped cell, the optimization m... [more]

A Coupled CFD-DEM Model for Resolved Simulation of Filter Cake Formation during Solid-Liquid Separation
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cake filtration, CFD-DEM, direct numerical simulation, lattice-Boltzmann method (LBM), pressurized housing experiments, solid-liquid separation, woven filter media
In cake filtration processes, where particles in a suspension are separated by forming a filter cake on the filter medium, the resistances of filter cake and filter medium cause a specific pressure drop which consequently defines the process energy effort. The micromechanics of the filter cake formation (interactions between particles, fluid, other particles and filter medium) must be considered to describe pore clogging, filter cake growth and consolidation correctly. A precise 3D modeling approach to describe these effects is the resolved coupling of the Computational Fluid Dynamics with the Discrete Element Method (CFD-DEM). This work focuses on the development and validation of a CFD-DEM model, which is capable to predict the filter cake formation during solid-liquid separation accurately. The model uses the Lattice-Boltzmann Method (LBM) to directly solve the flow equations in the CFD part of the coupling and the DEM for the calculation of particle interactions. The developed mode... A Similarity Model of the Cooling Process of Fluids during Transportation
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cooling, dimensional analysis, mathematical model, numerical simulation
This article presents a description of a novel method for the identification of a decrease in the temperature of a liquid medium transported by railroad tank cars. No exact analytical solution exists for this phenomenon; therefore, the authors of this article have prepared a mathematical expression for the cooling process of the transported fluid by applying a dimensional analysis, which facilitated the identification of the dimensionless criteria using the relevant dimensional parameters. A functional dependence between the criteria can be identified through a physical or numerical experiment. In this case, a database of the results from a detailed numerical model was used; however, its disadvantage is that the calculation takes much longer than in a simpler similarity model. The output of the similarity model was a function of the average temperature of the fluid at a time applicable to various alternatives in the geometrical, physical, and boundary conditions. The standard deviation... [more]

Continuum-Based Approach to Model Particulate Soil−Water Interaction: Model Validation and Insight into Internal Erosion
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: continuum modeling, internal erosion, numerical analysis, pipe leakage, soil fluidization, two-fluid model
Resolving the interaction between soil and water is critical to understanding a wide range of geotechnical applications. In cases when hydrodynamic forces are dominant and soil fluidization is expected, it is necessary to account for the microscale interactions between soil and water. Some of the existing models such as coupled Computational Fluid Dynamics−Discrete Element Method (CFD-DEM) can capture microscale interactions quite accurately. However, it is often computationally expensive and cannot be easily applied at a scale that would aid the design process. Contrastingly, continuum-based models such as the Two-Fluid Model (TFM) can be a computationally feasible and scalable alternative. In this study, we explored the potential of the TFM to simulate granular soil−water interactions. The model was validated by simulating the internal fluidization of a sand bed due to an upward water jet. Analogous to leakage from a pressurized pipe, the simulation was compared with the available ex... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: field synergy principle, injection position, mixer, spray simulation
The NH3 uniformity and conversion rate produced by the urea−water solution spray system is an essential factor affecting de-NOx efficiency. In this work, a three-dimensional simulation model was developed with the CFD software and was employed to investigate the effects of two typical injection methods (wall injection and center injection) and three distribution strategies (pre-mixer, post-mixer, pre-mixer, and post-mixer) of two typical mixers on the urea conversion rate and uniformity. The field synergy principle was employed to analyze the heat transfer of different mixer flow fields. The results show that the single mixer has instability in optimizing different injection positions due to different injection methods and injection positions. The dual-mixer is stable in the optimization of the flow field under different conditions. The conclusion of the field synergy theory of the single mixer accords with the simulation result. Effect of Gas Volume Fraction on the Gas-Phase Distribution in the Passage and Blade Surface of the Axial Flow Screw-Type Oil-Gas Multiphase Pump
February 23, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: flow mechanism, multiphase flow, numerical simulation, oil-gas multiphase pump, vortical motion
The axial flow screw-type oil-gas multiphase pump is mainly applied to oil and gas transport in the deep sea. In the process of transporting the multiphase medium, the gas volume fraction (GVF) on the gas phase changes from time-to-time, resulting in the performance of the oil-gas multiphase pump being greatly influenced by the gas phase. This paper presents a detailed analysis of the gas-phase distribution law and the vortex distribution in the flow passages within the oil-gas multiphase pump by means of numerical calculations, supplemented by experimental verification. The results show that the gas phase is mainly concentrated in the diffuser at different GVFs, and the gas phase gathering in the diffuser becomes more significant with the increase in the GVF. The gas-phase volume fraction increases gradually from rim to hub, that is, the gas-phase gathering degree increases. The maximum gas-phase volume distribution area is mainly concentrated in the area near the hub of the diffuser... [more]
