Miguel López Santos, Xela García-Santiago, Fernando Echevarría Camarero, Gonzalo Blázquez Gil, Pablo Carrasco Ortega
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Artificial Intelligence, deep learning, photovoltaic power forecast, solar energy, Temporal Fusion Transformer
The energy generated by a solar photovoltaic (PV) system depends on uncontrollable factors, including weather conditions and solar irradiation, which leads to uncertainty in the power output. Forecast PV power generation is vital to improve grid stability and balance the energy supply and demand. This study aims to predict hourly day-ahead PV power generation by applying Temporal Fusion Transformer (TFT), a new attention-based architecture that incorporates an interpretable explanation of temporal dynamics and high-performance forecasting over multiple horizons. The proposed forecasting model has been trained and tested using data from six different facilities located in Germany and Australia. The results have been compared with other algorithms like Auto Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), using statistical error indicators. The use of TFT has been shown to be more accurate... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Doppler PSDs, frequency CCfs, MIMO channel modeling, space CCFs, temporal ACFs
In this paper, we propose a geometry-based channel model for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications in practical tunnel scenarios. In the proposed channel model, the waves transmitted from the transmitter experience line-of-sight (LoS) and non-LoS (NLoS) before arriving at the receiver. The time-varying parameters of the propagation paths and angles are derived to characterize the channel non-stationarity. Furthermore, we derive the correlation property functions of the proposed V2V channel model; they are space cross-correlation functions (CCFs), temporal auto-correlation functions (ACFs), frequency CCFs, as well as the Doppler power spectrum distributions (PSDs). Numerous simulation results of the propagation characteristic for different physical properties of the tunnel, as well as the different motion properties of the transmitter and receiver, are studied and discussed; they demonstrate that the proposed channel model is suitable for describi... February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: inductive power transfer, international standards, safety, SAR
This paper presents a detailed analysis of the safety of human bodies in the electromagnetic field generated by inductive power transfer (IPT) systems designed for kitchen appliances. Comparisons of basic and reference limit values of various safety standards are investigated through theoretical circuit analysis and extensive simulation studies. Simulation models of human bodies along with an IPT system for kitchen appliances are established to reveal the effect of the electromagnetic field on the human body. Corresponding experiments are conducted via constructing a configuration of the designed IPT system and simulating the standing position. Both experimental and analytical results indicate that it is easier to fulfill international safety standards by increasing the operating frequency of the IPT system for kitchen appliances, and hence, the safety of human bodies can be effectively improved.

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: AVO analysis, seismic exploration, sparse inversion, thin interlayer, tuning effects
The wave field characteristics of thin reservoirs are extremely complex due to the tuning and interference between the top and bottom interfaces of the reservoirs, which leads to large uncertainty in thin layer AVO (Amplitude Versus Offset) analysis. In order to reduce the uncertainty of thin layer AVO analysis, we study the uncertainty dominant factors of the effect of thin layer on the AVO response characteristics from the aspects of theoretical derivation and forward simulation. Based on the research results, we use the AVO fitting forward method with offset and tuning utility as the joint inversion operator to establish an AVO detuning effect method, based on the sparse fitting inversion strategy, and study the objective function of the fitting inversion method. We optimize the sparsity constraints and the sparsity method to reduce the non-independence of multiparameter variables and seismic data, and the noise of inversion. Through the verification analysis of the model using actu... [more]

Keywords: closely spaced arrangement, Computational Fluid Dynamics, control volume, interaction effect, momentum conservation, rotor cluster, vertical-axis wind turbine, wake model
Recently, wind farms consisting of clusters of closely spaced vertical-axis wind turbines (VAWTs) have attracted the interest of many people. In this study, a method using a wake model to predict the flow field and the output power of each rotor in a VAWT cluster is proposed. The method uses the information obtained by the preliminary computational fluid dynamics (CFD) targeting an isolated single two-dimensional (2D) VAWT rotor and a few layouts of the paired 2D rotors. In the method, the resultant rotor and flow conditions are determined so as to satisfy the momentum balance in the main wind direction. The pressure loss of the control volume (CV) is given by an interaction model which modifies the prepared information on a single rotor case and assumes the dependence on the inter-rotor distance and the induced velocity. The interaction model consists of four equations depending on the typical four-type layouts of selected two rotors. To obtain the appropriate circulation of each roto... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: hydrogen storage bottle, injection pipeline, state of charge, temperature evolution
The fast charging process of high-pressure gas storage cylinders is accompanied by high temperature rise, which potentially induces the failure of solid materials inside the cylinders and the underfilling of the cylinders. A two-dimensional (2D) axisymmetric model simulated the charging process of hydrogen storage cylinders with a rated working pressure of 35 MPa and a volume of 150 L. During filling, the highest temperature rise inside the cylinder occurs at the bottom part of the cylinder, and the state of charge (SOC) is 46.4% after filling. This temperature rise can be reduced by precooling the injected hydrogen, and the highest SOC can reach 95.7% after injection. The SOC in the cylinder gradually increases with a decrease in the temperature of the hydrogen injection. The maximum SOC increase is 49.3%. For safety and the SOC exceeding 90%, the hydrogen gas should be precooled to below −10 °C, and the SOC could achieve more than 90.3%. The internal structure of the hydrogen cylinde... [more]

Keywords: «OLGA», high-viscosity oil, horizontal wells, mechanical solids, particle, sand production, sand transport
Recently, more and more new oil fields entering commercial production are complicated by the content of high-viscosity products, which are located at relatively shallow depths. For the rational development of such fields, a network of horizontal wells is used. A special feature of these objects is a weakly cemented reservoir, which leads to significant sand occurrence during well operation. At the same time, the removal of mechanical impurities cannot be avoided even when using complex measures, including the use of various filters. There are quite a few methods describing the behavior of mechanical impurities in gas−liquid flows. The purpose of the work was to analyze the removal of mechanical impurity particles from horizontal wells with high-viscosity oil. A model of a typical well in the OLGA software was created, and data on the types of particle removal were obtained. As a result of calculations, the quality of removal for different diameters of mechanical impurities was determin... [more]

Keywords: atomized droplet, flue gas desulfurization wastewater, least-square support vector machine, spray evaporation, zero discharge of wastewater
Spraying flue gas desulfurization wastewater into flue ducts is an emerging technology that is receiving extensive attention in thermal power plants. In order to study the evaporative performance of wastewater-atomizing droplets under variable working conditions, a combined Euler−Lagrange model was developed to demonstrate the thermal behavior of FGD wastewater spray evaporation in flue gas. The effects of several control factors under various operating conditions were numerically determined and validated against experimental data. Due to the complicated parameters and various other conditions, a least-square support vector machine (LSSVM) model relying on numerical results was used to anticipate the evaporation rate of the droplets. We prove that the LSSVM model has high prediction accuracy for the evaporation rate at different cross-sections of flue under a different operating situation. The conclusion is that for the sake of improving the quality of evaporation, the spacing between... [more]

Tian Cheng, Dylan Dah-Chuan Lu, Yam P. Siwakoti
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: circuit-based rainflow counting algorithm, lifetime estimation application, multi-domain simulation
The software-assisted reliability assessment of power electronic converters is increasingly important due to its multi-domain nature and extensive parametric calculations. The rainflow counting algorithm is gaining popularity for its low relative error in device lifetime estimation. Nevertheless, the offline operation of the algorithm prevents most simulation software packages considering other parameters for the device under study, such as aging and the current state of health in the estimation, as it requires a complete loading profile to run recursive comparison. This also brings difficulties in realization in circuit simulators such as SPICE. To tackle the issue, an in-the-loop circuit-based rainflow counting algorithm is proposed in this paper, and applied to estimate the consumed lifetime of the MOSFET in a boost converter for illustration. Instantaneous electrical and thermal performances, and the accumulated stress of the device can be monitored. Not only does this assist in ev... [more]

Keywords: ARMGs, investment decision, low-carbon transition, real options
As a critical node of the global transportation network, ports have great potential in promoting transportation emission reduction. Promoting the low-carbon transition of ports by using clean energy is effective. Using hydrogen energy in automated container terminals (ACTs) has become popular in port emission-reduction research. The research object is the main port equipment—the automated rail-mounted container gantry crane (ARMG). This research designs a staged investment decision-making scheme for ARMGs’ hydrogen energy transition. The Internet of Things (IoT) architecture in ACTs collects ARMG equipment operation and carbon emission data. It provides a basis for data acquisition in ARMGs’ hydrogen energy transition. Furthermore, ports can adopt big data technology to analyze the correlation between equipment operation and carbon emissions. Finally, the digital twin platform will visualize the ARMG equipment operation and carbon emission behavior to remote operators. These advanced t... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, pH modelling, scrubber, wash water
In the current article, we will use a CFD approach for the scrubber wash water dilution simulation, by considering the current MEPC (Marine Environment Protection Committee, a subsidiary of IMO—International Maritime Organization) regulations that are in force. The necessity for scrubber wash water pH modelling and its importance in the current environmental framework is emphasized. The presented 3D model is considered as a 400 mm hydraulic diameter fluid domain with two outlets and a discharge water flow rate of 3050 m3/h for the considered pH value of 3, obtained within a state-of-the-art exhaust gas scrubber solution developed by a major EGCS (Exhaust Gas Cleaning Systems) supplier. The CFD study was developed by considering a k-ε turbulence model. In order to achieve accurate results, a structured mesh with two levels of refinement volumes was realized. Based on the obtained data and the various parameters discussed, the paper presents a way to investigate the optimal results for f... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electrical preheating, oil recovery factor, SAGD, scaled physical experiment, steam conformance
The SAGD start-up process normally circulates steam in both the injector and producer, which consumes a large amount of steam, requires the high cost of high-temperature-produced liquid treatment, and unavoidably results in preferential communication in heterogeneous reservoirs. In order to achieve uniform preheat and full steam chamber development in SAGD wellpairs, downhole electrical heating to start up SAGD was proposed and investigated in this study using physical and numerical simulation approaches. Two 3-D scaled physical experiments were designed and implemented to investigate the feasibility and heating characteristics of such a method. Numerical simulation was conducted using an SAGD sector model with typical field properties to design the preheating process, optimize key operational parameters, and formulate the soak strategy to determine the SAGD conversion timing. The experimental results indicate that electrical heating outperforms steam circulation in achieving the unifo... [more]

Keywords: aerodynamics, Computational Fluid Dynamics, cross-flow fan, fluid machinery, internal flow, performance prediction, turbomachinery
Cross-flow fans (CFFs) have become increasingly popular in recent years. This is due to their use in several domains such as air conditioning and aircraft propulsion. They also show their utility in the ventilation system of hybrid electric cars. Their high efficiency and performance significantly rely on the design parameters. Up to now, there is no general approach that predicts the CFFs’ performance. This work describes a new methodology that helps deduce the performance of CFFs in turbomachinery, using both analytical modeling and experimental data. Two different loss models are detailed and compared to determine the performance−pressure curves of this type of fan. The efficiency evaluation is achieved by realizing a multidisciplinary study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations, and an optimization algorithm combined to explore the internal flow field and obtain additional information about the eccentric vortex, to finally obtain the ultimate formulation of the Eck/Laing... Keywords: mode selection, multi-chamber actuator, reinforcement learning
This paper presents the development and implementation of a reinforcement learning agent as the mode selector for a multi-chamber actuator in a load-sensing architecture. The agent selects the mode of the actuator to minimise system energy losses. The agent was trained in a simulated environment and afterwards deployed to the real system. Simulation results indicated the capability of the agent to reduce energy consumption, while maintaining the actuation performance. Experimental results showed the capability of the agent to learn via simulation and to control the real system.

Keywords: road transport of loads, simulation model, traffic studies
Simulation models of transport systems are a key tool for solving many problems in the field of management of these systems. The methodologies for creating such models use datasets on both transport infrastructure and demand for the delivery of goods or passenger transport, however, many factors are considered based on assumptions due to the complexity. This article describes the approach to modeling the cargo transportation system for road transport in Poland based on data obtained by the Central Statistical Office from the TD-E survey. This approach avoids many assumptions about demand as the demand parameters are estimated based on a sample representing the general population—a set of all economic entities generating freight traffic. Basic procedures in the developed approach have been implemented as Python scripts. As a result of the use of the proposed methodology, a country-wide road transport model was obtained based on the TD-E survey from 2018. The adequacy of the developed mo... [more]

Keywords: local Nusselt number, mechanical vapor recompression system, numerical simulation, salty effluent, spray drop film
The horizontal drop film evaporator is a key component of the mechanical vapor recompression crystallization system, which can be used to evaporate effluent and recycle secondary vapor energy. However, the properties of heat transfer and flow of the salty effluent sprayed external of the horizontal drop film evaporation tube are obviously different from that of ordinary water. We established a 3D model for a horizontal drop film evaporator in the system, and water and sodium sulfate mixture were manufactured to reproduce the real salty effluent. By applying the VOF (volume of fluid) model, the liquid-gas interface of a salty effluent spray drop film formed on a horizontal tube in the evaporator was traced. The impacts of various heat flux, sodium sulfate content, spray density, and temperature on the local Nusselt number were studied, and a dimensionless correlation was established. The results showed that the effect of surface tension cannot be negligible; as the sodium sulfate conten... [more]

Keywords: aerosol hazard particles, Computational Fluid Dynamics, heat transfer, indoor air quality, modelling and simulation, natural ventilation, OpenFOAM
Aerosol pollutant particles indoors significantly affect public health. The conventional wisdom is that natural ventilation will alleviate the dispersion of airborne or aerosol particles. However, we show that the problem is far more complex and that natural ventilation should be applied under specific conditions to be effective. We performed several simulations of a simplified (and easily reproducible) room with a window opening and aerosol particles stratified layers. Opening a window can scatter particles present in stratified layers indoors and potentially contribute to the degradation of indoor air quality for a significant period of time. Moreover, we show that thermal instabilities arising from the temperature gradients due to temperature differences between the indoor and outdoor environment spread the particles randomly indoors, adversely affecting air quality and architectural design. Recommendations for more efficient natural ventilation minimizing aerosol pollutant particle... [more]

Keywords: composite insulator, dry band formation, pollution layer, thermoelectric modeling
This paper introduces a new geometry for the study of dry band formation. Firstly, a thermoelectric simulation of a 69 kV uniformly polluted composite insulator was performed. The results obtained show that thermal stress is greater at the rod surface where current density is maximum. In order to experimentally reproduce the constriction of current density lines on the insulator rod surface, which is the cause of dry band formation, the development of a new simple geometric setup, which was then tested experimentally, was proposed. For this purpose, an ESDD value corresponding to a high level of pollution was used for each polluted sample, and the samples were placed in a climate chamber at constant 90% relative humidity and a constant ambient temperature of 20 °C. Low-voltage tests permitted the determination of the wetting duration, which corresponds to the maximum surface conductance of the polluted layer. The values obtained agree with the 10−40 min duration recommended in IEC 6050... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: balanced growth, multi-cluster fracturing, non-uniform perforation, numerical simulation, PSO
Stress shadowing affects the simultaneous propagation of fractures from multiple perforation clusters. Employing uniform perforation parameters for all clusters cause the unbalanced growth of fractures, which arouses the demand of optimizing non-uniform perforation parameters. An optimization workflow combining a fracture propagation model and the particle swarm optimization method (PSO) is proposed for multi-cluster fracturing in this study. The fracture model considers the coupling of rock deformation and fluid flow along the wellbore and fractures, and it is solved by using the Newton iteration method. The optimization is performed by taking the variance of multiple fracture lengths as fitness value function in the frame of the PSO method. Numerical results show that using the same spacings and perforation parameters for all clusters is detrimental to the balanced growth of multiple fractures. The variance of fracture lengths drops greatly through optimization of cluster spacings an... [more]

Keywords: dosimetry benchmark, H.B. Robinson-2, neutronics, nuclear safety, validation, vessel aging, vessel embrittlement
The operation of many nuclear pressurized water reactors is being extended beyond their design lifetime limit. From the perspective of possible further lifetime extension, safety requirements are a priority. Therefore, the quantification of the neutron irradiation embrittlement of the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) is an important issue, as this is a guiding parameter that influences the reactor lifetime. In this context, the Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire developed a calculation scheme for the analysis of RPV aging under neutron irradiation, named VACS (vessel aging calculation scheme). VACS couples a deterministic approach (CASMO5 and SIMULATE5) to evaluate the full-core fission neutron source term and a Monte Carlo modeling (MCNP6) approach to model the neutron attenuation from the core to sites of interest (RPV, surveillance capsules, etc.). To ensure the reliability of aging predictions, this paper describes a detailed analysis of the neutron H.B. Robinson-2 rea... [more]

Keywords: analytic model, efficiency, elastocaloric cooling, latent heat transfer, shape memory alloy, Simulation
When it comes to covering the growing demand for cooling power worldwide, elastocalorics offer an environmentally friendly alternative to compressor-based cooling technology. The absence of harmful and flammable coolants makes elastocalorics suitable for energy applications such as battery cooling. Initial prototypes of elastocaloric systems, which transport heat by means of thermal conduction or convection, have already been developed. A particularly promising solution is the active elastocaloric heat pipe (AEH), which works with latent heat transfer by the evaporation and condensation of a fluid. This enables a fast and efficient heat transfer in a compression-based elastocaloric cooling system. In this publication, we present a simulation model of the AEH based on MATLAB-Simulink. The model showed very good agreement with the experimental data pertaining to the maximum temperature span and maximum cooling power. Hereby, non-measurable variables such as efficiency and heat fluxes in... [more]

Keywords: bipolar plates, contamination, degradation modeling, proton-exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC), sealing
Proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are regarded as promising alternatives to internal combustion engines (ICEs) to reduce pollution. Recent research on PEMFCs focuses on achieving higher power densities, reducing the refueling time, mitigating the final price, and decreasing the degradations, to facilitate the commercialization of hydrogen mobility. The design of bipolar plates and compression kits, in addition to their coating, can effectively improve performance, increase durability, and support water/thermal management. Past reviews usually focused on the specific aspect, which can hardly provide readers with a complete picture of the key challenges facing and advances in the long-term performance of PEMFCs. This paper aims to deliver a comprehensive source to review, from both experimental, analytical and numerical viewpoints, design challenges, degradation modeling, protective coatings for bipolar plates, and key operational challenges facing and solutions to the stack t... Keywords: 3-phase wireless power transfer (3Ph-WPT), EV charging, inductive power transfer (IPT)
This paper presents the modeling, the design and verification of a three-phase coil structure for high-power Wireless-Power-Transfer (WPT) in automotive applications. The system, a Three-Polar-Pad (TPP), with complex mechanical geometry, is analytically modeled with an equivalent simplified structure. Thanks to this simplification, a numerical design is performed to minimize cross-coupling effects among different phases of the same side (receiver or transmitter) maximizing the linkage flux receiver-to-transmitter and then the power transferred. The analytical model is then verified in a Finite-Element-Analysis (FEA) environment. A final design, comprehensive of the shielding, is proposed matching the preliminary design constraints. Hence, the preliminary model is verified by testing a prototype using a three-phase Silicon Carbide (SiC) inverter at the transmitter side. The capability of the system is demonstrated by transferring 100 kW with more than 94% DC-to-DC efficiency over a 50 m... [more]

Keywords: CFD modelling, hydropower, Kaplan prototype, speed-no-load
Hydropower plants often work in off-design conditions to regulate the power grid frequency. Frequent transient operation of hydraulic turbines leads to premature failure, fatigue and damage to the turbine components. The speed-no-load (SNL) operating condition is the last part of the start-up cycle and one of the most damaging operation conditions of hydraulic turbines. Hydraulic instabilities and high-stress pressure fluctuations occur due to the low flow rate and unsteady load on the runner blades. Numerical simulations can provide useful insight concerning the complex flow structures that develop inside hydraulic turbines during SNL operation. Together with experimental investigations, the numerical simulations can help diagnose failures and optimize the exploitation of hydraulic turbines. This paper introduces the numerical model of a full-scale 10 MW Kaplan turbine prototype operated at SNL. The geometry was obtained by scaling the geometry of the corresponding model turbine as th... Keywords: exploitation process modeling, maintenance analysis, readiness, semi-Markov model, transportation system
This paper presents the issues of modeling the operation process of light utility vehicles operating in military transport systems. The required condition for the effective operation of the system is to maintain the means of transport at the appropriate level of technical readiness. For this purpose, it is necessary to equip the technical system with appropriate resources enabling the efficient implementation of fuel refilling, maintenance and repair processes. Each failure of the means of transport causes a significant reduction in transport capacity, which then results in the inability to perform the planned tasks. Quality control and vehicle operation process management require advanced mathematical methods and tools. Three indicators have been proposed as quantitative characteristics for assessing and optimizing the availability of military vehicles: functional readiness, technical efficiency and airworthiness. To determine their value, a stochastic exploitation model was developed... [more]
