The Condition of Photovoltaic Modules under Random Operation Parameters
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: inefficiency, Modelling, photovoltaic cell, randomness, residual method.
The paper presents an original method underlying an efficient tool for assessing the condition of photovoltaic (PV) modules, in particular, those made of amorphous cells. Significantly random changes in operational parameters characterize amorphous cell operation and cause them to be challenging to test, especially in working conditions. To develop the method, the authors modified the residual method with incorporated histograms. The proposed method has been verified through experiments that show the usefulness of the proposed approach. It significantly minimizes the risk of false diagnostic information in assessing the condition of photovoltaic modules. Based on the proposed methods, the inference results confirm the effectiveness of the concept for evaluating the degree of failure of the photovoltaic module described in the paper.

Graph Modeling for Efficient Retrieval of Power Network Model Change History
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: graph database, history, smart grids.
Power grids are constantly evolving, and data changes are increasing. Operational technology (OT) is controlled by IT technologies in smart grids, where changes in the physical world impose changes in the software data model, as well as the continuous generation of data points, resulting in time series datasets. The increased need for processing large amounts of data combined with requirements to maintain and increase overall performances has created a significant challenge for traditional database solutions and relational database models. The main idea of this paper was to find and propose a graph model that will allow the retrieval of historical connectivity in a reduced time complexity. Furthermore, the research question was addressed by evaluating three different approaches where the results provide a foundation for the proposed design guidelines related to optimizing graph-based databases for a modern smart grid system. The results of the experiments demonstrated reduced time comp... [more]

Flow Stability in a Miniature Centrifugal Pump under the Periodic Pulse Flow
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: energy gradient method, incoming periodic pulse flow, miniature centrifugal pump, transient flow stability.
The flow behavior inside a miniature centrifugal pump, under a periodic pulse flow rate, was studied by means of numerical simulation. For a given incoming periodic pulse flow with a sine wave, the performance of the centrifugal pump was investigated in the section with increasing flow and the section with decreasing flow, and the special points of the flow rate and the periodic flow were identified. Further, the energy gradient method and the Q-criterion were adopted to analyze the internal vertical structure and flow stability. It was found that the regions with large variations in velocity and total pressure were mainly located at the leading edge of the suction surface and the middle area of the pressure surface of the blades. Irregular pressure fluctuation frequency under the periodic pulse flow was shown; this was mainly concentrated in the low-frequency zones close to the impeller’s rotational frequency. In addition, for the same flow rate in the periodic pulse flow, the pressur... [more]

Analysis of Water-Cooled Intercooler Thermal Characteristics
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, construction machinery, fin structure, water-cooled intercooler.
With the incremental power of construction machinery diesel engines, the power performance of diesel engines and the pollutant emissions from the exhaust gas have imposed increasingly stringent requirements on the intake cooling system of diesel engines. This paper compared the j/f evaluation factors for fin unit bodies of water-cooled intercooler (including straight fins and rectangular misaligned fins) by means of CFD simulation, and found that the rectangular misaligned fins had an 8% advantage in comprehensive performance. With the rectangular staggered fin intercooler, it was found that under the same conditions, the cooling efficiency of the dual-pass water-cooled intercooler is higher than that of the single-pass water-cooled intercooler, and the uniformity factor of the temperature difference field of the dual-pass water-cooled intercooler is 1.5% higher than that of the latter. The accuracy of the overall simulation of the intercooler is verified by the field test. The dual-pa... [more]

Simulation and Modelling of Transient Electric Fields in HVDC Insulation Systems Based on Polarization Current Measurements
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: charging–discharging current modelling, DC cables, electric fields, HVDC insulation systems.
Simulating and modelling electric field dynamics in the insulation of medium- and high-voltage DC electrical systems is needed to support insulation design optimization and to evaluate the impact of voltage transients on ageing mechanisms and insulation reliability. In order to perform accurate simulations, appropriate physical models must be adopted for the insulating material properties, particularly conductivity, which drives the electric field in a steady-state condition and contributes to determining the field behavior during voltage and load transients. In order to model insulation conductivity, polarization, and conduction, mechanisms must be inferred through charging and discharging current measurements, generally performed at different values of electric field and temperatures in flat specimens of the material under study. In general, both mechanisms are present, but one of them may be predominant with respect to the other depending on type of material. In this paper, we showe... [more]

Impact of Cryogenics on Cavitation through an Orifice: A Review
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cavitation, cryogenics, instabilities, multiphase modeling, propulsion systems.
Cryogenic cavitation affects the operation of liquid propulsion systems during the first phase of a launch. Its effects within orifices or turbopumps can range from mild instabilities to catastrophic damages to the structures, jeopardizing the launch itself. Therefore, to ensure the proper designing of propulsion systems, cavitation phenomena cannot be neglected. Although hydrodynamic cavitation has been studied for decades, the impact of the nature of the fluid has been sparsely investigated. Therefore, this review, beginning from the basic concepts of cavitation, analyzes the literature dedicated to hydrodynamic cryogenic cavitation through an orifice. Our review provides a clear vision of the state-of-the-art from experimental and modeling viewpoints, identifies the knowledge gaps in the literature, and proposes a way to further investigate cryogenic cavitation in aerospace science.

Research on Wave Attenuation Performance of Floating Breakwater
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: double-pontoon floating breakwater, Savonius blade, wave attenuation.
In this study, a new type of double-pontoon floating breakwater was designed to improve the wave attenuation performance through the addition of suspended Savonius propeller-blade. Its hydrodynamic characteristics were studied through numerical simulations and performance-testing experiment. The following investigations were performed in this study: Firstly, wave theory and hydrodynamic theory were combined to calculate the wave attenuation performance and motion response of double-pontoon floating breakwater under linear wave conditions. The numerical results showed that the wave attenuation performance was better under a specific wave period and height, the transmission coefficient reached a relatively small value, and the mooring line tension responded periodically and satisfied the condition of maximum breaking force. Secondly, three key geometric parameters of breakwater were researched, including the relative spacing of pontoons, the relative spacing between pontoons and blades,... [more]

The nth-Order Comprehensive Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Methodology for Response-Coupled Forward/Adjoint Linear Systems (nth-CASAM-L): I. Mathematical Framework
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: 1st-, 2nd, 3rd- and 4th-order sensitivities, adjoint model, arbitrarily-high-order (nth-order) comprehensive adjoint sensitivity analysis methodology, forward model, nth-order sensitivities, sensitivity analysis and the curse of dimensionality.
This work presents the mathematical framework of the nth-Order Comprehensive Adjoint Sensitivity Analysis Methodology for Response-Coupled Forward/Adjoint Linear Systems (abbreviated as “nth-CASAM-L”), which is conceived for obtaining the exact expressions of arbitrarily-high-order (nth-order) sensitivities of a generic system response with respect to all of the parameters (including boundary and initial conditions) underlying the respective forward/adjoint systems. Since many of the most important responses for linear systems involve the solutions of both the forward and the adjoint linear models that correspond to the respective physical system, the sensitivity analysis of such responses makes it necessary to treat linear systems in their own right, rather than treating them as particular cases of nonlinear systems. This is in contradistinction to responses for nonlinear systems, which can depend only on the forward functions, since nonlinear operators do not admit bona-fide adjoint... [more]

Sensitivity Analysis and Power Systems: Can We Bridge the Gap? A Review and a Guide to Getting Started
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: bibliometric study, decision-making, global sensitivity analysis, literature review, local sensitivity analysis, Monte Carlo simulation, power system, sensitivity analysis, uncertainty analysis, variance-based sensitivity analysis.
Power systems are increasingly affected by various sources of uncertainty at all levels. The investigation of their effects thus becomes a critical challenge for their design and operation. Sensitivity Analysis (SA) can be instrumental for understanding the origins of system uncertainty, hence allowing for a robust and informed decision-making process under uncertainty. The SA value as a support tool for model-based inference is acknowledged; however, its potential is not fully realized yet within the power system community. This is due to an improper use of long-established SA practices, which sometimes prevent an in-depth model sensitivity investigation, as well as to partial communication between the SA community and the final users, ultimately hindering non-specialists’ awareness of the existence of effective strategies to tackle their own research questions. This paper aims at bridging the gap between SA and power systems via a threefold contribution: (i) a bibliometric study of t... [more]

Numerical Simulation on Impacts of Thickness of Nafion Series Membranes and Relative Humidity on PEMFC Operated at 363 K and 373 K
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: higher temperature operation than usual, mass and current density distribution, numerical simulation, PEMFC, relative humidity of supply gas, thickness of Nafion membrane.
The purpose of this study is to understand the impact of the thickness of Nafion membrane, which is a typical polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) in Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFCs), and relative humidity of supply gas on the distributions of H2, O2, H2O concentration and current density on the interface between a Nafion membrane and anode catalyst layer or the interface between a Nafion membrane and cathode catalyst layer. The effect of the initial temperature of the cell (Tini) is also investigated by the numerical simulation using the 3D model by COMSOL Multiphysics. As a result, the current density decreases along with the gas flow through the gas channel irrespective of the Nafion membrane thickness and Tini, which can be explained by the concentration distribution of H2 and O2 consumed by electrochemical reaction. The molar concentration of H2O decreases when the thickness of Nafion membrane increases, irrespective of Tini and the relative humidity of the supply ga... [more]

Open-Source Tool for Transforming CityGML Levels of Detail
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: CityGML, geometrical transformation, heating demand simulation, Levels of Detail (LoD), open-source, UBEM.
Urban Building Energy Modelling (UBEM) requires adequate geometrical information to represent buildings in a 3D digital form. However, open data models usually lack essential information, such as building geometries, due to a lower granularity in available data. For heating demand simulations, this scarcity impacts the energy predictions and, thereby, questioning existing simulation workflows. In this paper, the authors present an open-source CityGML LoD Transformation (CityLDT) tool for upscaling or downscaling geometries of 3D spatial CityGML building models. With the current support of LoD0−2, this paper presents the adapted methodology and developed algorithms for transformations. Using the presented tool, the authors transform open CityGML datasets and conduct heating demand simulations in Modelica to validate the geometric processing of transformed building models.

Analysis of the Nicolaus Copernicus Airport Activity in Terms of the Flight Operations Impact on Air Pollution
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: air pollution, airport local air quality, dispersion modeling.
The dynamic development of aviation is associated with many benefits, but also, unfortunately, with negative effects. One of the adverse consequences is the exhaust emissions that have a negative impact on human health. It particularly affects the residents of areas neighboring airports, as airport activity deteriorates local air quality. Using the Emissions and Dispersion Modeling System, the activity of the Nicolaus Copernicus Airport was assessed in terms of the flight operations’ contribution to air contamination in the area adjacent to the airport. Emissions from three sources were compared: aircraft, ground support equipment and auxiliary power units. The concentrations of pollutants in inhabited areas located in three different directions in relation to the airport were also estimated. In addition, the effect of distance from the airport on contaminant concentrations was assessed as a function of wind direction. It was noticed that small values of pollutant concentrations, origi... Accelerating Building Energy Retrofitting with BIM-Enabled BREEAM-NL Assessment
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: BREEAM-NL, building energy retrofitting, building information modelling (BIM), energy performance evaluation, energy transition, RACI matrix.
The Paris Agreement requires building retrofitting practices to be more efficient and effective. However, the current practice for building energy retrofitting is lacking behind, and one reason for that is the time-consuming process of energy credit evaluation. Energy performance assessment such as BREEAM-NL in the Netherlands could apply a more automatic approach with the help of building information modelling (BIM) for an efficient building energy retrofitting evaluation process. However, to what extent BIM can help in accelerating energy performance evaluation in the BREEAM-NL certification process is under-examined. This paper first combines literature findings with practical interviews from a case study organization to present a holistic overview of the potential for automating energy-related credits evaluation in BREEAM-NL using BIM. To understand the possible impacts of such transition, a responsible, accountable, consulted, and informed (RACI) matrix is developed to map the imp... [more]

Keywords: airfoil, boundary layer, Computational Fluid Dynamics, RANS modeling, transition, wind turbine.
Accurate computation of the performance of a horizontal-axis wind turbine (HAWT) using Blade Element Momentum (BEM) based codes requires good quality aerodynamic characteristics of airfoils. This paper shows a numerical investigation of transitional flow over the DU 91-W2-250 airfoil with chord-based Reynolds number ranging from 3 × 106 to 6 × 106. The primary goal of the present paper is to validate the unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) approach together with the four-equation transition SST turbulence model with experimental data from a wind tunnel. The main computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code used in this work was ANSYS Fluent. For comparison, two more CFD codes with the Transition SST model were used: FLOWer and STAR-CCM +. Modeling of Electrified Transportation Systems Featuring Multiple Vehicles and Complex Power Supply Layout
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: electrified transport, energy consumption, Energy Efficiency, losses assessment, multi-vehicle modeling, regenerative braking, transportation system.
The paper proposes a novel approach to modeling electrified transportation systems. The proposed solution reflects the mechanical dynamics of vehicles as well as the distribution and losses of electric supply. Moreover, energy conversion losses between the mechanical and electrical subsystems and their bilateral influences are included. Such a complete model makes it possible to replicate, e.g., the impact of voltage drops on vehicle acceleration or the necessity of partial disposal of regenerative braking energy due to temporary lack of power transmission capability. The modeling methodology uses a flexible twin data-bus structure, which poses no limitation on the number of vehicles and enables modeling complex traction power supply structures. The proposed solution is suitable for various electrified transportation systems including suburban and urban systems. The modeling methodology is applicable i.a. to Matlab/Simulink, which makes it broadly available and customizable, and provid... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, free decay, IEA, OC6, offshore wind, semisubmersible, uncertainty, validation.
Currently, the design of floating offshore wind systems is primarily based on mid-fidelity models with empirical drag forces. The tuning of the model coefficients requires data from either experiments or high-fidelity simulations. As part of the OC6 (Offshore Code Comparison Collaboration, Continued, with Correlation, and unCertainty (OC6) is a project under the International Energy Agency Wind Task 30 framework) project, the present investigation explores the latter option. A verification and validation study of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models of the DeepCwind semisubmersible undergoing free-decay motion is performed. Several institutions provided CFD results for validation against the OC6 experimental campaign. The objective is to evaluate whether the CFD setups of the participants can provide valid estimates of the hydrodynamic damping coefficients needed by mid-fidelity models. March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: coke combustion, fluid catalytic cracking, hydrodynamics, kinetics, Modelling, regenerator.
Heavy petroleum industries, including the Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) unit, are among some of the biggest contributors to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The FCC unit’s regenerator is where these emissions originate mostly, meaning the operation of FCC regenerators has come under scrutiny in recent years due to the global mitigation efforts against climate change, affecting both current operations and the future of the FCC unit. As a result, it is more important than ever to develop models that are accurate and reliable at predicting emissions of various greenhouse gases to keep up with new reporting guidelines that will help optimise the unit for increased coke conversion and lower operating costs. Part 1 of this paper was dedicated to reviewing the riser section of the FCC unit. Part 2 reviews traditional modelling methodologies used in modelling and simulating the FCC regenerator. Self-Heating of Biochar during Postproduction Storage by O2 Chemisorption at Low Temperatures
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: biochar, large-scale storages, O2 chemisorption, packed-bed simulation, self-heating, thermal runaway.
Biochar is attracting attention as an alternative carbon/fuel source to coal in the process industry and energy sector. However, it is prone to self-heating and often leads to spontaneous ignition and thermal runaway during storage, resulting in production loss and health risks. This study investigates biochar self-heating upon its contact with O2 at low temperatures, i.e., 50−300 °C. First, kinetic parameters of O2 adsorption and CO2 release were measured in a thermogravimetric analyzer using biochar produced from a pilot-scale pyrolysis process. Then, specific heat capacity and heat of reactions were measured in a differential scanning calorimeter. Finally, a one-dimensional transient model was developed to simulate self-heating in containers and gain insight into the influences of major parameters. The model showed a good agreement with experimental measurement in a closed metal container. It was observed that char temperature slowly increased from the initial temperature due to hea... [more]

Simulation and Flow Analysis of the Hole Diaphragm Labyrinth Seal at Several Whirl Frequencies
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, labyrinth seal, leakage, streamline analysis, turbulence kinetic energy, vortex dissipation.
The seal is designed to reduce leakage and improve the efficiency of gas turbine machines, and is an important technology that needs to be studied in gas turbine design. A series of seals were proposed to try to achieve this goal. However, due to the complex fluid dynamic performance of the seal-rotor system, the seal structure can obtain both the best leakage performance and best rotordynamic performance. This paper presents a detailed flow analysis of the hole diaphragm labyrinth seal (HDLS) at several whirl frequencies and several rotation speeds. The pressure drop, velocity, turbulence kinetic energy and leakage performance of the HDLS were discussed by simulations. An interesting exponential−type relationship between rotation speeds and leakage flow at different whirl frequencies was observed by curve fitting technology. A reverse flow rate was proposed to describe such an unusual phenomenon. Such a relationship can be used to further establish the leakage model of the HDLS and ot... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: approximation model, constraint, dynamic ranges, financial market, Hausdorff distances, Minimax, multivalued dynamic series.
In this article, the problem of modeling a time series using the Minimax method is considered. The expediency of using Minimax to identify points of change in trends and the range of changes in the graphical figures of technical analysis is justified. Spline approximation of the dynamic process with range constraints was performed to improve the quality of the model. Investors are advised to refrain from making hasty decisions in favor of holding reliable shares (such as PJSC Novatek shares), rather than selling them. The purchase of new shares should be carefully analyzed. Through an approximation of the dynamic number of the applicable optimization problem of minimizing the maximum Hausdorff distances between the ranges of the dynamic series and the values of the approximating function, the applied approach can provide reliable justification for signals to buy shares. March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cell chemistry, cell configuration, finite element analysis, mathematical model, modal analysis.
Electric, hybrid, and fuel cell vehicles are the future of the automobile industry, and power source design is one of the most crucial steps in designing these vehicles. This paper aims to design and structurally simulate a custom accumulator—which powers an electric vehicle, for a lightweight, single-seater formula-style racecar. The work is dependent on the model-based design and CAD model approach. Mathematical modeling on SCILAB is used to model equations to get the characteristics of the accumulator, such as the energy, capacity, current, voltage, state of charge, and discharge rates. The output of this model gives the configuration of the battery pack as several cells in series and parallel to adequately power the tractive system. An accumulator container is designed to safeguard the cells from external impacts and vibrational loads, which otherwise can lead to safety hazards. Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: differential mode, electrical machine, frequency inverter, frequency response, HF impedance, HF lumped parameter model, HF modeling, insulation stress, potential distribution, random-wound, voltage stress, wide-bandgap.
This article describes a practical method for predicting the distribution of electric potential inside an electrical machine’s winding based on design data. It broadens the understanding of winding impedance in terms of inter-winding behavior and allows to properly design an electrical machine’s insulation system during the development phase. The predictions are made based on an frequency-dependent equivalent circuit of the electrical machine which is validated by measurements in the time domain and the frequency domain. Element parameters for the equivalent circuit are derived from two-dimensional field simulations. The results demonstrate a non-uniform potential distribution and demonstrate that the potential difference between individual turns and between turns and the stator core exceeds the expected values. The findings also show a link between winding impedance and potential oscillations inside the winding. Additionally, the article provides an overview of the chronological progr... [more]

Numerical Analysis of Thermal Stress for a Stack of Planar Solid Oxide Fuel Cells
March 3, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, flow arrangement, Modelling, SOFC stack, thermal stress.
In this work, a 3D multi-physics coupled model was developed to analyze the temperature and thermal stress distribution in a planar solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stack, and then the effects of different flow channels (co-flow, counter-flow and cross-flow) and electrolyte thickness were investigated. The simulation results indicate that the generated power is higher while the thermal stress is lower in the co-flow mode than those in the cross-flow mode. In the cross-flow mode, a gas inlet and outlet arrangement is proposed to increase current density by about 10%. The generated power of the stack increases with a thin electrolyte layer, but the temperature and its gradient of the stack also increase with increase of heat generation. The thermal stress for two typical sealing materials is also studied. The predicted results can be used for design and optimization of the stack structure to achieve lower stress and longer life.
