Mining Stress Distribution and Fault-Slip Behavior: A Case Study of Fault-Influenced Longwall Coal Mining
Peng Kong, Lishuai Jiang, Jiaming Shu, Lu Wang.
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Coal, fault slip, microseismicity, mining stress, numerical simulation.
It is well accepted that faults have significant impacts on the safe production of underground coal mines; however, the fault-slip mechanism during longwall mining through a fault still needs to be investigated. In this study, the distribution of microseismicity events during panel mining through a fault is analyzed, and 3-dimensional fast Lagrangian analysis of continua was used to study the mining stress distribution and fault-slip behavior under the two different mining directions, i.e., mining the panel through the fault from the footwall, or mining the panel through the fault from the hanging wall. The research shows that when the panel is mined through the fault from the footwall, the shear displacement of the fault is significantly greater than those created by mining the panel through the fault from the hanging wall. Under the two mining directions, the variation behaviors of the normal stress and shear stress on the fault are quite different, and fault-slips mainly occur in fa... [more]

Van Thinh Nguyen, Alina Santa Cruz, Sylvain S. Guillou, Mohamad N. Shiekh Elsouk, Jérôme Thiébot.
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: actuator disk, Computational Fluid Dynamics, misalignment, tidal energy converter, tidal farm.
This study aims to investigate the influence of the current direction on the energy production of a tidal turbines array. It is based on a three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulation of the flow where the turbines are represented with actuator disks. The case study consists of modelling the energy extraction of a small array of turbines (staggered and aligned layouts) placed in the Raz Blanchard (Alderney Race, France). The simulations are performed with hydrodynamic data (current magnitude and direction) representative of a mean tide, with several resistance forces and ambient turbulence intensities. The influence of the current direction on the energy production is highlighted by comparing the simulations forced with the real current direction with those in which the angle of incidence between the incoming flow and the turbine’s axis is “switched off” (bi-directional flow). When the flow is aligned with the turbines’ axis (misalignment “switched off”), the staggered layout produces m... [more]

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: array modelling tool, economic model, M model, O&amp, ocean energy, operating data, real sea experience.
Of the cost centres that combine to result in Levelised Cost of Energy (LCOE), O&M costs play a significant part. Several developers have calculated component costs, demonstrating how they can become commercially competitive with other forms of renewable energy. However, there are uncertainties relating to the O&M figures that can only be reduced through lessons learned at sea. This work presents an O&M model calibrated with data from real sea experience of a wave energy device deployed at the Biscay Marine energy Platform (BiMEP): the OPERA O&M Model. Two additional case studies, utilising two other O&M calculation methodologies, are presented for comparison with the OPERA O&M Model. The second case study assumes the inexistence of an O&M model, utilising a Simplified Approach. The third case study applies DTOcean’s (a design tool for ocean energy arrays) O&M module. The results illustrate the potential advantages of utilising real sea data for the calibration and development of an O&... [more]

Changyu Zhou, Guohe Huang, Jiapei Chen.
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: decision-making, electric power system, multiple objectives, Optimization, type-2 fuzzy programming.
In this study, a type-2 fuzzy chance-constrained fractional integrated programming (T2FCFP) approach is developed for the planning of sustainable management in an electric power system (EPS) under complex uncertainties. Through simultaneously coupling mixed-integer linear programming (MILP), chance-constrained stochastic programming (CCSP), and type-2 fuzzy mathematical programming (T2FMP) techniques into a fractional programming (FP) framework, T2FCFP can tackle dual objective problems of uncertain parameters with both type-2 fuzzy characteristics and stochastic effectively and enhance the robustness of the obtained decisions. T2FCFP has been applied to a case study of a typical electric power system planning to demonstrate these advantages, where issues of clean energy utilization, air-pollutant emissions mitigation, mix ratio of renewable energy power generation in the entire energy supply, and the displacement efficiency of electricity generation technologies by renewable energy ar... Jun-Woo Choi, Yong-Joon Jun, Jin-ha Yoon, Young-hak Song, Kyung-Soon Park.
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: automatic extraction, automation, building information modeling, interoperability, spatial information.
Despite the international trend of actively utilizing BIM in the field of energy simulation, it is difficult to actively utilize BIM in domestic certification-related practice. As a result, the work process is not integrated and the work efficiency is reduced, such as the occurrence of redundant tasks. In this paper, the integrated process based on the BIM geometry information automated extraction module was presented and its effectiveness was reviewed and verified through self-developed automation module and uniformity and error-causing analysis. The construction of an integrated process through automatic configuration information extraction has the advantages of reducing the workload, enabling additional tasks through module function expansion, sharing information through the web, and ease of service manufacture. In addition, an experiment comparing the data of automatic and manual calculations with three subjects confirmed that automatic calculation database through automation modul... [more]

Jun-hui Zhang, Gan Liu, Ruqi Ding, Kun Zhang, Min Pan, Shihao Liu.
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: 3D printing, computational fluid dynamic (CFD), energy-saving, hydraulic manifold, internal passages, pressure loss.
With the compact circuit layout and small size, hydraulic manifolds sometimes cause high pressure loss. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the pressure loss under different circumstances with various geometry features and present solutions to reduce pressure loss. The pressure loss performance is evaluated by both experimental and numerical methods. Verified by the experiments, the numerical simulations are qualified to depict the correct trend of the pressure drop. After the basic analysis of traditional passages, three novel forms are proposed, which are very hard to be manufactured by a common method. Furthermore, the geometrical features are selected optimally by means of full factorial experiments to balance the pressure loss and space requirement. Moreover, taking advantage of 3D printing, it is possible to build the passages in novel forms which are beyond the capacity of conventional manufacturing. Results show that the pressure loss can be reduced considerably by adop... [more]
Long-Term Solar Photovoltaics Penetration in Single- and Two-Family Houses in Switzerland
Evangelos Panos, Stavroula Margelou.
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Agent-based modeling, Monte Carlo Simulation, Scenario analysis, Technology diffusion.
The Swiss energy strategy aims at increasing electricity generation from solar power by 2050, to fulfil Switzerland’s commitments in the Paris Agreement. However, the market of single- and two-family houses is characterized by low return rates for excess power injected to the grid, and the installation of rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) is sensitive to financial incentives. We assess the drivers influencing the diffusion of rooftop solar PV systems until 2050, by employing an agent-based model. An agent is a single- or two-family house, and its decision to invest depends on the economic profitability of the investment, the agent’s income, environmental benefits (injunctive social norm), awareness and knowledge about the solar PV technology, and the impact of the social network (descriptive social norm). The model includes a synthetic population of agents, statistically equivalent to the true population. We also investigate the impact of different support policies, technology learning r... [more]
The Use of CFD for the Design and Development of Innovative Configurations in Regenerative Glass Production Furnaces
Carlo Cravero, Davide De Domenico.
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, glass production plants, NOx reduction, thermal regenerator.
The limitation of nitrogen oxides emissions is nowadays a challenge in several engineering fields. Recent European regulations have reduced the maximum NOx emissions and therefore forced the glass production sector to develop emission reduction strategies. Two different systems have been developed within the framework of the European LIFE project and are currently applied to glass regenerative furnaces: the Waste Gas Recirculation (WGR) and the Hybrid Air Staging (HyAS). The above systems are primary NOx reduction strategies because they both operate to control the combustion evolution. Both WGR and HyAS systems have been conceived with the extensive use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models: design strategies for both systems have been developed based on the use of CFD and are currently under use by glass furnace designers. In the present work, the CFD procedures routinely used for the design of the above systems are described. The systems effectiveness, due to the harsh condit... [more]

Mattia De Rosa, Marcus Brennenstuhl, Carlos Andrade Cabrera, Ursula Eicker, Donal P. Finn.
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: building simulation, energy performance forecasting, model calibration, reduced models, smart grids.
The present paper introduces an iterative methodology to progressively reduce building simulation model complexity with the aim of identifying potential trade-offs between computational requirements (i.e., model complexity) and energy estimation accuracy. Different levels of model complexity are analysed, from commercial building energy simulation tools to low order calibrated thermal networks models. Experimental data from a residential building in Germany were collected and used to validate two detailed white-box models and a simplified white-box model. The validation process was performed in terms of internal temperature profiles and building thermal energy demand predictions. Synthetic profiles were generated from the validated models and used for calibrating high order models. A reduction (trimming) procedure was applied to reduce the model complexity using an energy performance criterion prior to model trimming. The proposed methodology has the advantage of keeping the physical s... [more]
Improving Performance of Simplified Computational Fluid Dynamics Models via Symmetric Successive Overrelaxation
Vojtěch Turek.
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Computational Fluid Dynamics, performance, preconditioning, symmetric successive overrelaxation.
The ability to model fluid flow and heat transfer in process equipment (e.g., shell-and-tube heat exchangers) is often critical. What is more, many different geometric variants may need to be evaluated during the design process. Although this can be done using detailed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models, the time needed to evaluate a single variant can easily reach tens of hours on powerful computing hardware. Simplified CFD models providing solutions in much shorter time frames may, therefore, be employed instead. Still, even these models can prove to be too slow or not robust enough when used in optimization algorithms. Effort is thus devoted to further improving their performance by applying the symmetric successive overrelaxation (SSOR) preconditioning technique in which, in contrast to, e.g., incomplete lower−upper factorization (ILU), the respective preconditioning matrix can always be constructed. Because the efficacy of SSOR is influenced by the selection of forward and... [more]

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: airborne particles, calibrated simulations, energy consumption, GenOpt, operating room, TRNSYS.
Operating rooms are stringent controlled environments. All influential factors, in particular, airborne particles, must be within the limits established by regulations. Therefore, energy efficiency stays in the background, prioritizing safety and comfort in surgical areas. However, the potential of improvement in energy savings without compromising this safety is broad. This work presents a new procedure, based on calibrated simulations, that allows the identification of potential energy savings in an operating room, complying with current airborne particle standards. Dynamic energy and airborne particle models are developed and then simulated in TRNSYS and calibrated with GenOpt. The methodology is validated through experimental contrast with a real operating room of a hospital in Spain. A calibrated model with around 2% of error is achieved. The procedure determines the variation in particle concentration according to the flow rate of ventilation supplied and the occupancy of the ope... [more]

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: computer simulation of electrical machines, high speed electrical drive, induction machine, pulse width modulated inverter.
In several industrial sectors, induction machines are being replaced with permanent magnet based alternatives, owing to the potential for higher power density and efficiency. However, high-speed applications feature a wide flux-weakening region, where advanced induction machines could bring benefits in terms of system-level optimization. This paper gives an overview the technological challenges for high-speed drives with induction machines, materials, simulations and future challenges for the power electronics in these applications. The target application is a high-speed induction machine for a naval turbocharging system. The comparison with permanent magnet synchronous machines will demonstrate how the extended flux weakening operation effectively allows for a weight reduction of the overall system.

Yu Zhang, Jianjun Wu, Yang Ou, Jian Li, Sheng Tan.
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: anode radius, applied magnetic field strength, discharge current, electromechanical model, magnetoplasmadynamic thrusters, mass flow rate, thrust performance.
To predict the thrust of magnetoplasmadynamic thrusters (MPDTs), a modified electromechanical model was proposed and a comparison with experimental results is presented in this paper. The motion of propellant in the thruster was divided into two portions: the axial motion which was accelerated by the interaction of current and induced self-field, and the swirling motion which was accelerated by the interaction of current and applied magnetic field. The electromechanical model was in good agreement with the experimental data, and the fitting degrees of the model were greater than 0.93. Furthermore, the influence of parameters on the performance of MPDT were investigated by utilizing the electromechanical model. The results indicate that the thrust performance of the thruster improved with the increase of discharge current, anode radius, applied magnetic field strength, and the decrease of mass flow rate. However, the large anode radius and low mass flow rate readily led to the failure o... [more]

Sudhakar Gantasala, Narges Tabatabaei, Michel Cervantes, Jan-Olov Aidanpää.
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: aeroelastic behavior, Computational Fluid Dynamics, icing, Simulation, wind turbine.
Wind turbines installed in cold-climate regions are prone to the risks of ice accumulation which affects their aeroelastic behavior. The studies carried out on this topic so far considered icing in a few sections of the blade, mostly located in the outer part of the blade, and their influence on the loads and power production of the turbine are only analyzed. The knowledge about the influence of icing in different locations of the blade and asymmetrical icing of the blades on loads, power, and vibration behavior of the turbine is still not matured. To improve this knowledge, multiple simulation cases are needed to run with different ice accumulations on the blade considering structural and aerodynamic property changes due to ice. Such simulations can be easily run by automating the ice shape creation on aerofoil sections and two-dimensional (2-D) Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis of those sections. The current work proposes such methodology and it is illustrated on the Nation... [more]

Mariusz T. Sarniak, Jacek Wernik, Krzysztof J. Wołosz.
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: current–voltage characteristics, partial shading, photovoltaics, PV cell, PV module.
Photovoltaics (PV) is the phenomenon of converting sun energy into electric energy by using photovoltaic cells. Furthermore, solar energy is the major renewable energy source. PV modules are systematically more efficient and manufacturing costs decrease at the same time. The PV module performance is affected by ambient temperature, humidity, wind speed, rainfall, incident solar radiation intensity and spectrum, dust deposition, pollution, and shading, which are environmental factors. The problem of partial shading of the generator often arises when designing photovoltaic installations. If it is not possible to avoid this phenomenon, its impact on the operation of the photovoltaic system should be estimated. The classical method is to measure the current−voltage characteristics, but it requires switching off the installation for the duration of the measurements. Therefore, this paper proposes a method using a computer simulation in the Matlab package with the implemented component “Sola... [more]

Dennis Roskosch, Valerius Venzik, Burak Atakan.
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: experiments, process simulation, refrigerants, replacement fluids, retrofit.
The global warming potential of many working fluids used nowadays for vapor compression refrigeration systems and heat pumps is very high. Many of such fluids, which are used in currently operating refrigerators and heat pumps, will have to be replaced. In order to avoid a redesign of the system, it would be very helpful if efficient and ecological alternative working fluids for a given plant could be found. With modern process simulation tools such a selection procedure seems possible. However, it remains unclear how detailed such a model of a concrete plant design has to be to obtain a reliable working fluid ranking. A vapor compression heat pump test-rig is used as an example and simulated by thermodynamic models with different levels of complexity to investigate this question. Experimental results for numerous working fluids are compared with models of different complexity. Simple cycle calculations, as often used in the literature, lead to incorrect results regarding the efficienc... [more]

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: design and optimization, dynamic response, electromagnetic vibration energy harvester, nonlinear Galerkin method, output power.
A novel bistable electromagnetic vibration energy harvester (BEMH) is constructed and optimized in this study, based on a nonlinear system consisting mainly of a flexible membrane and a magnetic spring. A large-amplitude transverse vibration equation of the system is established with the general nonlinear geometry and magnetic force. Firstly, the mathematical model, considering the higher-order nonlinearities given by nonlinear Galerkin method, is applied to a membrane with a co-axial magnet mass and magnetic spring. Secondly, the steady vibration response of the membrane subjected to a harmonic base motion is obtained, and then the output power considering electromagnetic effect is analytically derived. On this basis, a parametric study in a broad frequency domain has been achieved for the BEMH with different radius ratios and membrane thicknesses. It is demonstrated that model predictions are both in close agreement with results from the finite element simulation and experiment data.... [more]

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: analytical modeling, flat evaporator, gas kinetic theory, liquid thin-film theory, loop heat pipe, steady-state thermal performance, vapor-liquid interface.
In this study, steady-state analytical modeling of a loop heat pipe (LHP) equipped with a flat evaporator is presented to predict the temperatures and pressures at each important part of the LHP—evaporator, liquid reservoir (compensation chamber), vapor-transport tube, liquid-transport tube, and condenser. Additionally, this study primarily focuses on analysis of the evaporator—the only LHP component comprising a capillary structure. The liquid thin-film theory is considered to determine pressure and temperature values concerning the region adjacent to the liquid-vapor interface within the evaporator. The condensation-interface temperature is subsequently evaluated using the modified kinetic theory of gases. The present study introduces a novel method to estimate the liquid temperature at the condensation interface. Existence of relative freedom is assumed with regard to the condenser configuration, which is characterized by a simplified liquid−vapor interface. The results obtained in... [more]

Eui Guk Jung, Joon Hong Boo.
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: analytical modeling, experimental validation, loop heat pipe, relative error, steady-state thermal performance, thermal resistance.
Part I of this study introduced a mathematical model capable of predicting the steady-state performance of a loop heat pipe (LHP) with enhanced rationality and accuracy. Additionally, investigation of the effect of design parameters on the LHP thermal performance was also reported in Part I. The objective of Part II is to experimentally verify the utility of the steady-state analytical model proposed in Part I. To this end, an experimental device comprising a flat-evaporator LHP (FLHP) was designed and fabricated. Methanol was used as the working fluid, and stainless steel as the wall and tubing-system material. The capillary structure in the evaporator was made of polypropylene wick of porosity 47%. To provide vapor removal passages, axial grooves with inverted trapezoidal cross-section were machined at the inner wall of the flat evaporator. Both the evaporator and condenser components measure 40 × 50 mm (W × L). The inner diameters of the tubes constituting the liquid- and vapor-tran... [more]
Model Analysis of Electrically Driven Vehicles by Means of Unknown Input Observers
Ilya Kulikov.
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, mathematical modeling, unknown input observers, unmeasured torque calculation.
The article describes a method to analyze the powertrain operation of electrically driven vehicles in cases of insufficient information (i.e., unknown control algorithms, no torque measurements during vehicle tests). The method implies mathematical modeling with involvement of so-called unknown input observers. A variant of such an observer is proposed. Using that observer, studies of a hybrid vehicle and a pure electric vehicle are performed. The models with torque observers simulated tests of said vehicles conducted on a chassis dynamometer and on roads. For the hybrid vehicle, operating regimes of main powertrain components were identified. For the electric vehicle, the identification revealed a coordinated operation of regenerative braking and mechanical braking. Adequacy of the modeling, including identification of the unmeasured torques, was verified through a comparison with experimental data.

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: electronic device, flip chip component, life prediction, thermal fatigue, thermal stress.
Thermal Fatigue of flip chip component solder joints is widely existing in thermal energy systems, which imposes a great challenge to operational safety. In order to investigate the influential factors, this paper develops a model to analyze thermal fatigue, based on the Darveaux energy method. Under cyclic thermal loading, a theoretical heat transfer and thermal stress model is developed for the flip chip components and the thermal fatigue lives of flip chip component solder joints are analyzed. The model based simulation results show the effects of environmental and power parameters on thermal fatigue life. It is indicated that under cyclic thermal loading, the solder joint with the shortest life in a package of flip chip components is located at the outer corner point of the array. Increment in either power density or ambient temperature or the decrease in either power conversion time or ambient pressure will result in short thermal fatigue lives of the key solder joints in the flip... Keywords: design flow, LED digital twin, multi-domain compact model, multi-LED, tool agnostic.
At present, when designing a Light Emitting Diode (LED) luminaire, different strategies of development are followed depending on the size of the company. Since on LED datasheets there is only limited information provided, companies designing LED luminaires spend a lot of effort gathering the required input of LED details to be able to design reliable products. Small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) do not have the bandwidth to gather such input and solely rely on empirical approaches leading to approximated luminaire designs, while larger companies use advanced hardware and software tools to characterize parts, design versions, and finally optimize all design steps. In both cases, considerable time and money is spent on prototyping, sampling, and laboratory testing. Digitalization of the complete product development (also known as Industry 4.0 approach) at all integration levels of the solid state lighting (SSL) supply chain would provide the remedy for these pains. Design of Diamond Power Devices: Application to Schottky Barrier Diodes
Nicolas Rouger, Aurélien Maréchal.
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: diamond, Modelling, power devices, Schottky barrier diodes, wide bandgap semiconductors.
Owing to its outstanding electro-thermal properties, such as the highest thermal conductivity (22 W/(cm∙K) at room temperature), high hole mobility (2000 cm2/(V∙s)), high critical electric field (10 MV/cm) and large band gap (5.5 eV), diamond represents the ultimate semiconductor for high power and high temperature power applications. Diamond Schottky barrier diodes are good candidates for short-term implementation in power converters due to their relative maturity. Nonetheless, diamond as a semiconductor for power devices leads to specificities such as incomplete dopant ionization at room temperature and above, and the limited availability of implantation techniques. This article presents such specificities and their impacts on the optimal design of diamond Schottky barrier diodes. First, the tradeoff between ON-state and OFF-state is discussed based on 1D analytical models. Then, 2D numerical studies show the optimal design of floating metal rings to improve the effective breakdown v... [more]
