Creating Values from Biomass Pyrolysis in Sweden: Co-Production of H2, Biocarbon and Bio-Oil
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Aspen Plus, biochar, bioenergy, hydrogen production, process simulation, Technoeconomic Analysis.
Hydrogen and biocarbon are important materials for the future fossil-free metallurgical industries in Sweden; thus, it is interesting to investigate the process that can simultaneously produce both. Process simulations of biomass pyrolysis coupled with steam reforming and water-gas-shift to produce H2, biocarbon, and bio-oil are investigated in this work. The process simulation is performed based on a biomass pyrolysis plant currently operating in Sweden. Two co-production schemes are proposed: (1) production of biocarbon and H2, and (2) production of biocarbon, H2, and bio-oil. Sensitivity analysis is also performed to investigate the performance of the production schemes under different operating parameters. The results indicated that there are no notable differences in terms of the thermal efficiency for both cases. Varying the bio-oil condenser temperature only slightly changes the system’s thermal efficiency by less than 2%. On the other hand, an increase in biomass moisture conte... [more]

Thermodynamics and Machine Learning Based Approaches for Vapor−Liquid−Liquid Phase Equilibria in n-Octane/Water, as a Naphtha−Water Surrogate in Water Blends
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: Machine Learning, n-octane, number of phases, phase stability, vapor–liquid–liquid equilibrium, Water.
The prediction of phase equilibria for hydrocarbon/water blends in separators, is a subject of considerable importance for chemical processes. Despite its relevance, there are still pending questions. Among them, is the prediction of the correct number of phases. While a stability analysis using the Gibbs Free Energy of mixing and the NRTL model, provide a good understanding with calculation issues, when using HYSYS V9 and Aspen Plus V9 software, this shows that significant phase equilibrium uncertainties still exist. To clarify these matters, n-octane and water blends, are good surrogates of naphtha/water mixtures. Runs were developed in a CREC vapor−liquid (VL_Cell operated with octane−water mixtures under dynamic conditions and used to establish the two-phase (liquid−vapor) and three phase (liquid−liquid−vapor) domains. Results obtained demonstrate that the two phase region (full solubility in the liquid phase) of n-octane in water at 100 °C is in the 10−4 mol fraction range, and it... [more]

Distribution-Independent Empirical Modeling of Particle Size Distributions—Coarse-Shredding of Mixed Commercial Waste
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: commercial waste, compositional data analysis, isometric log-ratios, mechanical processing, multivariate multiple linear regression, particle size distribution, shredder, simplex, waste treatment.
Particle size distributions (PSDs) belong to the most critical properties of particulate materials. They influence process behavior and product qualities. Standard methods for describing them are either too detailed for straightforward interpretation (i.e., lists of individual particles), hide too much information (summary values), or are distribution-dependent, limiting their applicability to distributions produced by a small number of processes. In this work the distribution-independent approach of modeling isometric log-ratio-transformed shares of an arbitrary number of discrete particle size classes is presented. It allows using standard empirical modeling techniques, and the mathematically proper calculation of confidence and prediction regions. The method is demonstrated on coarse-shredding of mixed commercial waste from Styria in Austria, resulting in a significant model for the influence of shredding parameters on produced particle sizes (with classes: >80 mm, 30−80 mm, 0−30 mm... March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: digital twin, Machine Learning, production control, semiconductor fab, Simulation.
In a semiconductor fab, wafer lots are processed in complex sequences with re-entrants and parallel machines. It is necessary to ensure smooth wafer lot flows by detecting potential disturbances in a real-time fashion to satisfy the wafer lots’ demands. This study aims to identify production factors that significantly affect the system’s throughput level and find the best prediction model. The contributions of this study are as follows: (1) this is the first study that applies machine learning techniques to identify important real-time factors that influence throughput in a semiconductor fab; (2) this study develops a test bed in the Anylogic software environment, based on the Intel minifab layout; and (3) this study proposes a data collection scheme for the production control mechanism. As a result, four models (adaptive boosting, gradient boosting, random forest, decision tree) with the best accuracies are selected, and a scheme to reduce the input data types considered in the models... Modelling and Measurement of a Moving Magnet Linear Motor for Linear Compressor
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: FEA, linear motor, motor efficiency, motor loss, moving coil, moving magnet.
For the purpose of efficiency improvement, a linear motor that performs a linear reciprocating motion can be employed to directly drive the piston in a reciprocating refrigeration compressor without crankshaft mechanism. This also facilitates the modulation of cooling capacity as the stroke and frequency can be readily varied in response to heat load. A novel design of moving magnet linear motor for linear compressor was analyzed in the paper. A finite element analysis (FEA) model was built to simulate the characteristics of the linear motor. Current and displacement signals were measured from a test rig and were defined in the transient FEA model. Transient motor force was simulated with the FEA model and good agreements are shown between the results from the FEA model and interpolated shaft force from static force measurements. Major Losses, such as copper loss and core loss were also computed. Motor efficiency decreased from 0.88 to 0.83 as stroke increased from 9 mm to 12 mm, while... [more]

RANS Simulation of the Effect of Pulse Form on Fluid Flow and Convective Heat Transfer in an Intermittent Round Jet Impingement
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: form of pulses, heat transfer, impinging pulsed jet, second-moment closure, turbulence modeling.
The of effect pulse form (rectangular, sinusoidal and triangular) on the fluid flow and heat transfer of an intermittent jet impingement was studied numerically. It was shown in a non-steady-state jet, both an increase and decrease in heat transfer are possible compared with steady-state jet for all investigated pulse forms. For small distances between the pipe edge and obstacle (H/D ≤ 6) in the pulsed jet, heat transfer around the stagnation point increases with increasing pulse frequency, while for H/D > 8 an increase in frequency causes a heat transfer decrease. A growth in the Reynolds number causes a decrease in heat transfer, and data for all frequencies approach the steady-state flow regime. The numerical model is compared with the experimental results. Satisfactory agreement on the influence of the form and frequency of pulses on heat transfer for the pulsed jet on the obstacle surface is obtained.

Forecasting Day-Ahead Hourly Photovoltaic Power Generation Using Convolutional Self-Attention Based Long Short-Term Memory
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: convolutional self-attention, deep learning, distributed energy resource, LSTM, microgrid, PV power generation forecasting, virtual power plant (VPP).
The problem of Photovoltaic (PV) power generation forecasting is becoming crucial as the penetration level of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) increases in microgrids and Virtual Power Plants (VPPs). In order to improve the stability of power systems, a fair amount of research has been proposed for increasing prediction performance in practical environments through statistical, machine learning, deep learning, and hybrid approaches. Despite these efforts, the problem of forecasting PV power generation remains to be challenging in power system operations since existing methods show limited accuracy and thus are not sufficiently practical enough to be widely deployed. Many existing methods using long historical data suffer from the long-term dependency problem and are not able to produce high prediction accuracy due to their failure to fully utilize all features of long sequence inputs. To address this problem, we propose a deep learning-based PV power generation forecasting model cal... [more]

Vectorized Mathematical Model of a Slip-Ring Induction Motor
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: inductance matrix, Modelling, motion equation, Simulation, slip-ring induction motors.
The paper deals with the modeling of a slip-ring induction motor. Induction motors are very often used in industry and their suitable model is needed to reduce control and operating costs. The identification process of self and mutual inductances of the stator and rotor, and mutual inductances between them in the function of the rotor rotation angle is presented. The dependence of each inductance on the rotor rotation angle is determined experimentally. The inductance matrix is then formulated. Taking the magnetic energy of the inductances and kinetic energy of the rotor into account, the Lagrange function is defined. Next, the motor motion equations are obtained. After making some algebraic transformations and using the dimensionless variables, the motion equations of electric circuits and of the mechanical equation are written separately in the forms facilitating their solution. The solution was obtained using the Simulink model for the stator and rotor currents in the form of vector... [more]

A Nonlinear Autoregressive Distributed Lag (NARDL) Analysis of West Texas Intermediate Oil Prices and the DOW JONES Index
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: asymmetries, Bounds Tests, DOW JONES, multiplier effects, NARDL, WTI.
The paper features an examination of the link between the behaviour of oil prices and DowJones Index in a nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) framework. The attraction of NARDL is that it represents the simplest method available of modelling combined short- and long-run asymmetries. The bounds testing framework adopted means that it can be applied to stationary and non-stationary time series vectors, or combinations of both. The data comprise a monthly West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil series from Federal Reserve Bank of St Louis (FRED), commencing in January 2000 and terminating in February 2019, and a corresponding monthly DOW JONES index adjusted-price series obtained from Yahoo Finance. Both series are adjusted for monthly USA CPI values to create real series. The results of the analysis suggest that movements in the lagged real levels of monthly WTI crude oil prices have very significant effects on the behaviour of the DO... [more]

Smart Grid Monitoring by Wireless Sensors Using Binary Logistic Regression
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: binary logistic regression, phasor machine learning, Sensors, smart grids (intelligent networks), wireless network.
This article focuses on addressing the data aggregation faults caused by the Phasor Measuring Unit (PMU) by installing Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) in the grid. All data that is monitored by PMU should be sent to the base station for further action. But the data that is sent from PMU does not reach the main server properly in many situations. To avoid this situation, a sensor-based technology has been introduced in the proposed method for sensing the values that are monitored by PMU. Also, the basic parameters that are necessary for determining optimal solutions like energy consumption, distance and cost have been calculated for wireless sensors, whereas, for PMU optimal placements with cost analysis have been restrained. For analyzing and improving the accuracy of the proposed method, an effective Binary Logistic Regression (BLR) algorithm has been integrated with an objective function. The sensor will report all measured PMU values to an Online Monitoring System (OMS). To examine t... [more]

Development and Laboratory Testing of a Self-Excited Synchronous Machines without Permanent Magnets
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: electromagnetic modeling, fractional slots, PM-less rotating machines, self-excited synchronous machines, space MMF harmonics.
Today, self-excited synchronous machines are the object of increasing interest because they use neither brushes nor permanent magnets. In fact, the price of rare earth metals is considerably high and still raising. This is the main reason why researchers are looking for suitable alternatives to permanent magnets in the construction of rotating electrical machinery. This paper deals with the design and laboratory testing of a synchronous machine with an efficient layout and an economic construction. The proposed self-excited machine exploits the space harmonics of the magneto-motive force to produce the excitation field. The model analysis is based on the computation of the back EMFs that are associated to the magneto motive force components. The mathematical model suggests an easy way to decouple the rotor windings. The machine has been built and experimental tests have been performed in order to validate the electrical behavior.

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: co-simulation, dynamic performance test (DPT), hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS), hybrid simulation, real-time hybrid-simulator (RTHS), real-time simulator (RTS), testing of replicas.
This paper presents the hardware-in-the-loop simulation for dynamic performance test (HILS-DPT) of power electronic equipment replicas using a real-time hybrid simulator (RTHS). The authors developed the procedure of HILS-DPT, and as an actual case example, the results of HILS-DPT of Static VAR Compensator (SVC) replica using RTHS is presented. RTHS is a co-simulation tool that synthesizes real-time simulator (RTS) with transient stability program to perform real-time dynamic simulation of a large power system. As power electronics applications have been increasing, the electric utilities have performed HILS-DPT of the power electronics equipment to validate the performance and investigate interactions. Because inspection tests are limited in their ability to validate its impact on the power system during various contingencies, all power electronics equipment newly installed in the Korean power system should take HILS-DPT using large-scale RTS with replicas since 2018. Modeling the Impact of Electric Vehicle Charging Systems on Electric Power Quality
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: charging stations, e-mobility, electric power quality.
Recently, there has been dynamic development of electromobility. This trend is predicted to grow exponentially, which will contribute to the creation of an extensive infrastructure of electric car charging points. For distribution network operators, this implies that in addition to the increase in demand for power and electricity, the number of converter systems connected to their networks will also increase. It is therefore necessary to determine the potential impact of electric vehicle charging systems on electricity quality. To this end, the authors of the present study developed simulation models based on measurements of the actual charger and the data provided by the manufacturers of the equipment and using simulation models widely described in the literature. On the basis of the study results, the impact of electric car chargers on electric power quality was assessed, and attention was given to the opportunities offered by the development of charging systems with vehicle-to-grid... Transmission Power System Modeling by Using Aggregated Distributed Generation Model Based on a TSO—DSO Data Exchange Scheme
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: aggregated power plant, distributed generation, power system stability, smart power transmission system, transmission system modeling, transmission system resilience.
By integrating distributed energy resources (DER, mostly renewable energy sources) in the depth of the distribution network transmission system operators (TSOs), planning and control of transmission systems has been greatly hindered due to the lack of knowledge about the circumstances at the transmission and distribution network’s interface and the lack of coordination with the distribution system operator (DSO). By adopting the Commission Regulation (EU) 2017/1485 (System Operational Guideline—SOGL) establishing a guideline on electricity transmission system operation, harmonized rules on system operation for TSOs, DSOs and significant grid users (SGUs) are set out, inter alia, in order to provide a clear legal framework for the exchange of necessary data and information between the aforementioned subjects. In this paper, the methodology of DER representation at the interface of the transmission and distributed system is presented, with the indicated interactive data exchange between... [more]

Dissolution Process Observation of Methane Bubbles in the Deep Ocean Simulator Facility
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: bubble dissolution, non-hydrate condition, salinity, temperature dependence.
To investigate the temperature dependency of the methane bubble dissolution rate, buoyant single methane bubbles were held stationary in a countercurrent water flow at a pressure of 6.9 MPa and temperatures ranging from 288 K to 303 K. The 1 to 3 mm diameter bubbles were analyzed by observation through the pressure chamber viewport using a bi-telecentric CCD camera. The dissolution rate in artificial seawater was approximately two times smaller than that in pure water. Furthermore, it was observed that the methane bubble dissolution rate increased with temperature, suggesting that bubble dissolution is a thermal activation process (the activation energy is estimated to be 9.0 kJ/mol). The results were different from the expected values calculated using the governing equation for methane dissolution in water. The dissolution modeling of methane bubbles in the mid-to-shallow depth of seawater was revised based on the current results.

Transient Thermodynamic Modeling of a Scroll Compressor Using R22 Refrigerant
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: geometry, leakage, modeling and simulation, scroll compressor, thermodynamic analysis, transient behavior.
In this work, we investigated the transient analysis model for the performance of a scroll compressor. A transient model was developed based on the geometry of the scroll and relevant thermodynamic relations. In particular, the mass and energy conservation equations were transformed to yield pressure and temperature variations over time, respectively. As a result, the transient behavior of the refrigerant was predicted in terms of these two parameters, and the values for the suction and discharge processes had a maximum error of 5% compared to the experimental results. The predicted discharge temperature reliably agreed with the reference values during the entire compression process. The results indicate that the analytical model developed herein is a potentially useful tool for the dynamic analysis of a scroll compressor.

Direct Normal Irradiance Forecasting Using Multivariate Gated Recurrent Units
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: deep learning, direct normal irradiance, gated recurrent units, multivariate, time series forecasting.
Power grid operators rely on solar irradiance forecasts to manage uncertainty and variability associated with solar power. Meteorological factors such as cloud cover, wind direction, and wind speed affect irradiance and are associated with a high degree of variability and uncertainty. Statistical models fail to accurately capture the dependence between these factors and irradiance. In this paper, we introduce the idea of applying multivariate Gated Recurrent Units (GRU) to forecast Direct Normal Irradiance (DNI) hourly. The proposed GRU-based forecasting method is evaluated against traditional Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) using historical irradiance data (i.e., weather variables that include cloud cover, wind direction, and wind speed) to forecast irradiance forecasting over intra-hour and inter-hour intervals. Our evaluation on one of the sites from Measurement and Instrumentation Data Center indicate that both GRU and LSTM improved DNI forecasting performance when evaluated under di... [more]

Numeric Simulation of Acoustic-Logging of Cave Formations

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cave formation, P-waves, S-waves, scattered wave, Stoneley wave.
The finite difference (FD) method of monopole source is used to simulate the response of full-wave acoustic-logging in cave formations. The effect of the cave in the formation of borehole full-waves was studied. The results show that the radius of cave is not only linearly related to the first arrival of the compressional wave (P-wave), but also to the energy of the shear wave (S-wave). The converted S (S−S wave) and P-waves (S−P wave) are formed when the S-wave encounters the cave. If the source distance is small, the S−S and S−P waves are not separated, and the attenuation of the S-wave is not large, due to superposition of the converted waves. The S−P wave has been separated from the S-wave when the source distance is large, so the attenuation of the S-wave increases. The amplitude of the P and S−waves changes most when the distance of the cave to the borehole wall reaches a certain value; this value is related to the excitation frequency. The amplitude of the Stoneley wave (ST wave... [more]

Modelling Grid Constraints in a Multi-Energy Municipal Energy System Using Cumulative Exergy Consumption Minimisation
March 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: cumulative-exergy consumption minimisation, energy systems optimisation, energy-system design, exergy analysis, multi-energy systems, municipal energy systems, optimal power flow.
Efficiency measures and the integration of renewable energy sources are key to achieving a sustainable society. The cumulative exergy consumption describes the resource consumption of a product from the raw material to the final utilisation. It includes the exergy expenses for energy infrastructure as well as the imported energy. Since consumers and renewable potentials are usually in different locations, grid restrictions and energy flows have a significant impact on the optimal energy system design. In this paper we will use cumulative exergy minimisation together with load flow calculations to determine the optimal system design of a multi-cell municipal energy system. Two different load flow representations are compared. The network flow model uses transmission efficiencies for heat, gas and electricity flows. The power flow representation uses a linear DC approximated load flow for electricity flows and a MILP (mixed integer linear programming) representation for heat and gas flow... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: actuator line model, Computational Fluid Dynamics, counter-rotating wind turbine, wind energy.
A small Counter-Rotating Wind Turbine (CRWT) has been proposed and its performance has been investigated numerically. Results of a parametric study have been presented in this paper. As parameters, the axial distance between rotors and a tip speed ratio of each rotor have been selected. Performance parameters have been compared with reference to a Single Rotor Wind Turbine (SRWT). Simulations were carried out with Computational Fluids Dynamics (CFD) solver and a Large Eddy Scale approach to model turbulences. An Actuator Line Model has been chosen to represent rotors in the computational domain. Summing up the results of simulation tests, it can be stated that when constructing a CRWT turbine, rotors should be placed at a distance of at least 0.5 D (where D is rotor outer diameter) or more. One can then expect a noticeable power increase compared to a single rotor turbine. Placing the second rotor closer than 0.5 D guarantees a significant increase in power, but in such configurations,... [more]

Subject: Modelling and Simulations
Keywords: dynamic phasors, power electronics, real-time simulation, shifted frequency analysis.
Real-time simulation is an increasingly popular tool for product development and research in power systems.
