There are more than 200 thousand pupils in Latvia. Most of them are still learning in non-renovated classrooms without proper mechanical ventilation. The classrooms are often ventilated only during the breaks by opening windows. This can lead to increased CO2 levels and reduced mental performance. To test how CO2 concentration in classrooms influences student attention level and their ability to perform mental tasks, the students had to complete a short test at the start and the end of the class. At the same time CO2 concentration, temperature and relative humidity were logged. In addition, an anonymous survey on how the pupils felt regarding the overall indoor environmental quality (IEQ) in the classroom, their thermal sensation, are they fatigued, any difficulty concentrating and if they have headaches during the lesson performed. The measurements were performed in a Secondary School in Daugavpils, Latvia. The analysis of results shows that existing 10 min breaks are not enough to fu... [more]

Forecasting the Heat Load of Residential Buildings with Heat Metering Based on CEEMDAN-SVR
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: CEEMDAN, heat load prediction, residential buildings, SVR
The energy demand of the district heating system (DHS) occupies an important part in urban energy consumption, which has a great impact on the energy security and environmental protection of a city. With the gradual improvement of people’s economic conditions, different groups of people now have different demands for thermal energy for their comfort. Hence, heat metering has emerged as an imperative for billing purposes and sustainable management of energy consumption. Therefore, forecasting the heat load of buildings with heat metering on the demand side is an important management strategy for DHSs to meet end-users’ needs and maintain energy-saving regulations and safe operation. However, the non-linear and non-stationary characteristics of buildings’ heat load make it difficult to predict consumption patterns accurately, thereby limiting the capacity of the DHS to deliver on its statutory functions satisfactorily. A novel ensemble prediction model is proposed to resolve this problem... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: hydrogen peroxide, mild-temperature, pilot-scale, thermal pre-treatment, thermochemical pre-treatment, waste activated sludge
Sludge pre-treatments are emerging as part of the disposal process of solid by-products of wastewater purification. One of their benefits is the increase in methane production rate and/or yield, along with higher loading capacities of existing digesters. In this study, we report the performance of a pilot-scale compartmentalized digester (volume of 18.6 m3) that utilized a mild thermal pre-treatment at 70 °C coupled with hydrogen peroxide dosing. Compared with a reference conventional anaerobic digester, this technique allowed an increased organic loading rate from 1.4 to 4.2 kg volatile solids (VS)/(m3d) and an increment in the solids degradation from 40 to 44%. To some extent, these improvements were promoted by the solubilization of the tightly-bound fraction of the extracellular polymeric substances to looser and more accessible fractions without the formation of refractory compounds. In sum, our results suggest that this pre-treatment method could increase the treatment capacity o... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: energy renovation, homeowners’ perception, implementation, indoor environmental quality, influential factors
Inclusion of energy efficiency measures (EEMs) in the renovation of the single-family housing stock can unlock the potential for much-needed energy efficiency to tackle climate change. Energy renovation (ER) in single-family houses is often promoted as an aggregate process, and EEMs are treated homogenously without sufficient attention to their differences. This study applies a comparative analysis on common EEMs using chi-square test to investigate the influence of factors already found affecting the implementation of ER. This paper addresses the “personal” and “house-related” factors influencing the adoption of EEMs regardless of motives or barriers leading the adopters’ decisions. This strategy is useful to highlight the contexts leading to an increase in the adoption rate of different EEMs. The analysis is based on a questionnaire survey mailed in spring 2017 to 1550 single-family homeowners in the northern region of Sweden. Approximately 60% of respondents showed interest in adopt... [more]

Three-Dimensional Streamline Tracing Method over Tetrahedral Domains
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: 3D streamline tracing, FEniCS, Finite Element Method, streamline-based simulation, tetrahedral element
Getting a clear understanding of the fluid velocity field in underground porous media is critical to various engineering applications, such as oil/gas reservoirs, CO2 sequestration, groundwater, etc. As an effective visualization tool and efficient transport behaviors solution algorithm, the streamline-based method was improved significantly by numerous studies conducted in the last couple of decades. However, the implementation of streamline simulation is still challenging while working with Finite Element Method (FEM) over 3D tetrahedral domains, where the mass conservation is not guaranteed. Considering the increased computational cost to enforce mass conservation in FEM and additional complexity, a new three-dimensional streamline tracing algorithm is presented that only relies on the velocity vector of a flow field on each vertex of a tetrahedron in a 3D unstructured mesh system. Owning to the shape functions and transformation equations between the master element and actual eleme... [more]

Evaluating the Causal Relations between the Kaya Identity Index and ODIAC-Based Fossil Fuel CO2 Flux
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: causality, CO2 flux, GOSAT, Kaya identity, mediator analysis, ODIAC
The Kaya identity is a powerful index displaying the influence of individual carbon dioxide (CO2) sources on CO2 emissions. The sources are disaggregated into representative factors such as population, gross domestic product (GDP) per capita, energy intensity of the GDP, and carbon footprint of energy. However, the Kaya identity has limitations as it is merely an accounting equation and does not allow for an examination of the hidden causalities among the factors. Analyzing the causal relationships between the individual Kaya identity factors and their respective subcomponents is necessary to identify the real and relevant drivers of CO2 emissions. In this study we evaluated these causal relationships by conducting a parallel multiple mediation analysis, whereby we used the fossil fuel CO2 flux based on the Open-Source Data Inventory of Anthropogenic CO2 emissions (ODIAC). We found out that the indirect effects from the decomposed variables on the CO2 flux are significant. However, the... [more]

April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: circular economy, energy sector, greenhouse gases, sustainability reporting
The achievement of climate neutrality and eco-economic decoupling requires explicit measures to reduce greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions and to implement circular economy (CE) principles in practice. The energy sector is of particular importance in meeting these challenges because it exerts a substantial environmental impact. Therefore, it is extremely important to determine how essential GHG and CE issues are for companies operating in the energy sector. This can be reflected in corporate strategies, but it can also be disclosed to the public in sustainability reports. For this reason, this article presents a comprehensive analysis of sustainability reports based on the latest GRI Standards published by companies representing the energy sector in the European Union to determine the existence, quality, and specificity of reporting GHG and CE issues. The research results demonstrate that sustainability reports from the energy sector companies tend to focus more on GHG issues. They rarely... [more]

Thermodynamic Analysis of Iron Ore Sintering Process Based on Biomass Carbon
April 4, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: biomass carbon, iron ore sintering, pollutant emissions, thermodynamic analysis
The sinter process of iron ore with biomass carbon instead of coke breeze as fuel was investigated via thermodynamic analysis in this paper through a comparison of sinter composition indexes, metallurgical properties, and pollutant emissions. Straw charcoal was used in this paper, and its replacement does not adversely affect the composition index of iron ore, namely Fe, FeO, basicity, S, nor the metallurgical properties, namely reduction degradation index and reduction index. However, the replacement has a great effect on the emissions of pollutant gases, including SO2, NOx, CO, and CO2. The thermodynamic analysis result shows that emissions of pollutant gases produced in the sinter process significantly decrease by using straw charcoal instead of coke breeze in sinter. The sintering maximum temperature has a great influence on sintering technical indicators. The best sintering maximum temperature is between 1300 and 1400 °C, where sinter ore with high quality can be obtained.
