April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: biomass combustion, emission reduction, fuel improvement, gaseous compounds, particle chemical composition, particulate matter
This study investigates the transferability of aluminum-silicate-based fuel additivation as a primary, fuel-based mitigation measure for inorganic alkali-based particulate matter (PM) emissions during the complete combustion of wood chips. Therefore, wood chips are additivated with 0.5 wt% of three different types of the aluminum-silicate-based additive kaolin, which differ mainly in their particle size distribution, and with one type of kaolinite. The subsequent combustion trials with non-additivated and additivated wood chips are carried out in a small-scale combustion plant. To evaluate the effect of the additivation of the wood chips, the total particulate matter (TPM) emissions, the potassium (K) emissions, the ultra-fine PM emissions and the carbon monoxide (CO) emissions, as well as the chemical composition of the resulting ashes, are analyzed. In order to compare the primary, fuel-side mitigation measure of fuel additivation with the established secondary mitigation measures, a... [more]

Financial, Economic, and Environmental Analyses of Upgrading Reverse Osmosis Plant Fed with Treated Wastewater
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: circular economy, distributive analysis, economic cost, emission cost, energy saving, environmental externalities, levelized cost, membrane technologies, reused wastewater, reverse osmosis
One of the most effective strategies to mitigate water shortages worldwide is to reuse treated wastewater for freshwater production employing reverse osmosis (RO) technology. This strategy is appropriate in urban areas of arid or semi-arid regions as it can provide a sustainable and reliable water source close to the consumers. One of the drawbacks of RO is the high variability of production costs due to the electricity intensity. In addition, depending on the electricity source, it can also result in substantial environmental costs. This study showed that upgrading pumping and RO membrane systems of a wastewater reuse plant in Cyprus can significantly alleviate these drawbacks in terms cost, water recovery rate, and air pollution. The water-recovery rate of the upgraded RO plant increased from 43.2 to 75 percent, which resulted in a substantial net financial benefit due to the reduction in the quantity of wastewater purchased and the increase in potable water produced. The upgraded sy... [more]

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: CFC, energy retrofit, environmental retrofit, fluorocarbon, HFC, life cycle assessment (LCA), natural hazards, performance-based earthquake engineering (PBEE), sensitivity analysis, uncertainty analysis
Fluorocarbons are an important category of greenhouse gas emissions, and currently, their use is prohibited due to their significant contribution to the global ozone depletion potential (ODP). During this century, they will continue to emit greenhouse gases into the environment since they are present in the thermal insulation foam and HVAC systems in existing buildings; however, proper disposal of these banks of CFCs/HFCs from existing buildings can limit their effects on the environment. However, there are no studies that have investigated quantifying the achievable environmental savings in this case. In this study, a comparative life cycle assessment (LCA) is conducted to evaluate, for the first time in the literature, the environmental savings achievable through the removal and disposal of CFC/HFC banks from buildings including damage-related emissions. To cope with the scarcity of data, uncertainty and sensitivity analysis techniques are applied. The results show that, for the sele... [more]

Estimation of Electric Arc Incident Energy in Electric Power Distribution Grids
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: electric arc, electric power distribution grids, estimation, incident energy, personal protective equipment
The occurrence of an electric arc is an inherent possibility when working in a live line. Thermal risk is considered one of the most relevant risks associated with this type of event, so every worker who performs daily activities in the electricity distribution sector is subject to this risk to a lesser or greater degree. The quantification of the thermal risk is based on estimating the energy generated by the electric arc, and focuses on a surface called incident energy. Therefore, the incident energy estimate is used to define thermal protection strategies applicable to workers who carry out activities in the distribution sector. In light of this, the present work proposes a review of incident energy estimation methods for electric arcs in electric power distribution grids, highlighting the applicability of each of these methods in terms of voltage, short circuit type, and environment. Finally, five case studies are presented in which adequate methods are used to estimate the inciden... [more]

April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: fatigue analysis, ocean environmental load, offshore wind turbine (OWT), suction bucket, wind measurement period
This paper investigated the fatigue life of offshore wind turbine (OWT) support structures. For this purpose, a 3 MW-capacity typical wind turbine is investigated using time-domain finite element simulations. In numerical simulations, different stochastic wind models corresponding to different accumulation periods are applied. Then, the stress-based fatigue life is estimated following the rain-flow counting algorithm and Palmgren-Miner linearly cumulative damage rule. The study also addresses the joint distribution of loads at the site of interest. Generally, the study emphasizes the significance of the long-term distribution of the applied environment loads and its influence on the fatigue life of OWT’s substructures. The results imply that the wind measurement period is directly linked to the fatigue life of offshore wind turbine support structures. Accordingly, its fatigue life is significantly reduced at the 25-year accumulative period of wind. Therefore, this study recommends that... [more]

A Comparative Parametric Study on Dynamic Biogenic Carbon of Harvested Wood Products: Biomass Rotation Period vs. Product Lifetime
April 17, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: biomass rotation period, carbon footprint, harvested wood products, product lifetime
Harvested wood products (HWPs) are a class of products that are recognized for their potential to mitigate climate warming: the absorption of CO2, which is necessary to the growth of their biomass feedstock, temporarily reduces the amount of CO2 present in the Earth’s atmosphere, effectively mitigating global warming. This study decided to look into the effect of changing two important parameters associated with HWPs: the rotation period of the biomass used for their raw material (effectively, the rate of CO2 absorption), and the length of their lifetime (effectively, the amount of time the captured carbon is stored within them in the form of embodied carbon). For this purpose, a carbon accounting calculator, Quantis’ Biogenic Carbon Footprint Calculator for Harvested Wood Products (BCFC-HWP), was employed. The Biogenic Global Warming Potential (GWPbio) metric, which was used by the BCFC-HWP to describe the climate impact of a wooden product’s embodied carbon, was analyzed for its evol... [more]
