Energy Trading Strategy of Distributed Energy Resources Aggregator in Day-Ahead Market Considering Risk Preference Behaviors
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: day-ahead transaction strategic, distributed energy resources aggregator, information gap decision theory, marine predators algorithm
Distributed energy resources aggregators (DERAs) are permitted to participate in regional wholesale markets in many counties. At present, new market players such as aggregators participate in China’s power market transactions. However, studies related to market trading strategy have mostly focused on centralized wind power and PV generation units. Few studies have been conducted on the decision-making strategies for DERAs in China’s power market. This paper proposes an auxiliary decision-making model for distributed energy systems to participate in the day-ahead market with more reasonable trading strategies. Firstly, the Gaussian mixture model (GMM) is used to deal with the uncertainties of wind power and photovoltaic (PV) output in the distributed energy system. Secondly, the information gap decision theory (IGDT) is used to deal with the uncertainty of price fluctuations in the spot electricity market. Thirdly, according to the different risk preferences of the DERAs facing market p... [more]

The rising cost and demand for energy have prompted the need to devise innovative methods for energy monitoring, control, and conservation. In addition, statistics show that 20% of energy losses are due to the mismanagement of energy. Therefore, the utilization of energy management can make a substantial contribution to reducing the unnecessary usage of energy consumption. In line with that, the intelligent control and optimization of energy management systems integrated with renewable energy resources and energy storage systems are required to increase building energy efficiency while considering the reduction in the cost of energy bills, dependability of the grid, and mitigating carbon emissions. Even though a variety of optimization and control tactics are being utilized to reduce energy consumption in buildings nowadays, several issues remain unsolved. Therefore, this paper presents a critical review of energy management in commercial buildings and a comparative discussion to impro... [more]

A Review of the Use of Electrolytic Cells for Energy and Environmental Applications
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: CO2 reduction, hydrogen production, wastewater treatment, water electrolysis
There is a significant push to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and develop low-cost fuels from renewable sources to replace fossil fuels in applications such as energy production. As a result, CO2 conversion has gained widespread attention as it can reduce the accumulation of CO2 in the atmosphere and produce fuels and valuable industrial chemicals, including carbon monoxide, alcohols, and hydrocarbons. At the same time, finding ways to store energy in batteries or energy carriers such as hydrogen (H2) is essential. Water electrolysis is a powerful technology for producing high-purity H2, with negligible emission of greenhouse gases, and compatibility with renewable energy sources. Additionally, the electrolysis of organic compounds, such as lignin, is a promising method for localised H2 production, as it requires lower cell voltages than conventional water electrolysis. Industrial wastewater can be employed in those organic electrolysis systems due to their high organic content,... [more]

A New Two-Foci V-Trough Concentrator for Small-Scale Linear Fresnel Reflectors
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: concentration ratio, small linear Fresnel reflector, V-trough concentrator
We present the design of an original secondary cavity for use in Small-Scale Fresnel Reflectors in photovoltaic applications. The cavity is similar to the classical V-trough, but the primary reflector system is configured so that there are two focal points on the aperture. The rays coming from each side of the primary system reach the opposite side of the cavity, producing a non-symmetrical distribution of the irradiance. This modifies the acceptance half-angle and allows us to break the maximum limit for the concentration ratio of ideal symmetric concentrators. Our study is analytic, and we provide formulas for any number of reflections. Numerical simulations with a ray-tracing program based on MATLAB are included. We provide a comparison of optical concentration ratio, height and cost parameter between our system and two classical designs with a single focal point: the V-trough and the Compound Parabolic concentrators. This way, we verify that our design yields better concentration r... [more]

Bioenergy for Community Energy Security in Canada: Challenges in the Business Ecosystem
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: bioenergy ecosystem, community energy, forest biomass, indigenous energy
Bioenergy represents a viable renewable alternative for the many off-grid remote communities in Northern Canada that rely on diesel-based energy infrastructure. Despite the abundance of forest-based biomass, bioenergy for heat and power in Canada is used primarily in industrial contexts. Community-scale bioenergy, although growing, has been limited. Supply chain challenges, institutional and policy arrangements, and community perspectives indicate a need to better understand the ‘business ecosystem’ for bioenergy in Canada. The ecosystem includes technologies, community contexts, suppliers, developers, and policy makers. In this study, we explore the bioenergy business ecosystem challenges and perspectives from supply-side stakeholders. Interviews were conducted with representatives from the government, industry, and community—all working in bioenergy. The results indicate the following challenges facing the bioenergy ecosystem, with respect to community energy security: lack of cross-... [more]

Particle Number Emission from Vehicles of Various Drives in the RDE Tests
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: environment, particle numbers, passenger vehicle, RDE tests
In this study, the authors assessed the road emissions of several passenger cars using specialised instrumentation, of the PEMS type, to measure particle number emissions in real traffic conditions. The tests were performed on a RDE test route developed and compliant with EU guidelines. The results of the tests were discussed in terms of the direct (created in the internal combustion engine) emission of particulate matter in various road conditions. Additionally, an index was determined that characterizes the number of particles according to their diameter in relation to the content of particles in the air. A characteristic of combustion engines (gasoline, diesel) is that during a cold start of the engine, the concentration of the number of particles with diameters around 100 nm increases more than 200 times (for hybrids—300 times). On this basis, it can be concluded that particle emissions with diameters smaller than 23 nm are significant in motor vehicles powered by combustion engine... [more]

The development of biogas upgrading technologies is now an essential issue in recovering fuel-grade methane. Nowadays, trends in biogas upgrading include investigations of low-cost and renewable materials as sorbents for biogas enrichment to produce biomethane. Therefore, in this work, wastewater anaerobic sludge stabilized with calcium oxide was used as the bio-waste sorbent to capture carbon dioxide from biogas, employing a fixed bed column. The biogas flow rate was the parameter considered for examining the breakthrough responses. It was observed that breakthrough time decreases with increasing biogas inflow rate from 570 ± 10 min at 5 mL/min to 120 ± 12 min at 35 mL/min. The maximum sorption capacity of 127.22 ± 1.5 mg CO2/g TS of sorbent was estimated at 15 mL/min. Biomethane concentration in biogas increased from 56.5 ± 1.7 v% in the raw biogas to 98.9 ± 0.2 v% with simultaneous low carbon dioxide content of 0.44 ± 0.2 v%. February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: city multifloor manufacturing, energy-efficient thermal cycle, foam ceramic sintering, high-temperature furnace, smart sustainable production management
The development of environmentally friendly technologies, including additive technologies, contributes to the formation of sustainable production in city multifloor manufacturing clusters (CMFMCs). This paper discusses an approach to the implementation of energy-intensive technological processes in such clusters using examples of the manufacturing of ceramic and metal−ceramic products. The manufacturing of ceramic and metal−ceramic products in high-temperature furnaces is associated with an increased electricity consumption. The use of modern ceramic micro- and nanopowders makes it possible to switch to more energy-saving technologies by reducing the sintering temperature and shortening the technological cycle. This requires the use of additional activating and inhibiting additives in the initial powder mixtures to obtain products with the necessary physical and mechanical properties. The purpose of this paper is to present a model and indicators to assess the energy efficiency of the... [more]

February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: active power filter, cascaded two-level VSI, hybrid MLI, multilevel inverter
Different multilevel converter topologies have been presented for achieving more output voltage steps, hence improving system performance and lowering costs. In this paper, a hybrid multilevel inverter (MLI) topology is proposed for active-power-filter applications. The proposed MLI is a combination of two standard topologies: the cascaded H-bridge and the three-phase cascaded voltage source inverter. This configuration enhances the voltage levels of the proposed MLI while using fewer switches than typical MLI topologies. The proposed MLI was developed in the MATLAB/Simulink environment, and a closed-loop control technique was used to achieve a unity power factor connection of the PV modules to the grid, as well as to compensate for harmonics caused by nonlinear loads. To demonstrate that the configuration was working correctly and that the control was precise, the proposed MLI was constructed in a laboratory. A MicroLabBox real-time controller handled data acquisition and switch gatin... [more]

In 2010, the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive announced that all new buildings are to be nearly zero-energy as of January 2021. Having reached year 2022, it can be said that the transition has proven to be slower than anticipated. Transition research has long acknowledged the potential impact of the human factor in the process of change. While there is a relative wealth of literature on end-users and their perceptions as recipients of change within the demand end of the market, research on professionals and their perceptions as actors in the process of change is limited. Thus, this study looks at the human factor in the supply end of the market by bringing professionals’ perceptions to the forefront in its investigation of barriers to the implementation and uptake of nearly zero-energy housing in practice. As part of the project entitled Housing 4.0 Energy: Affordable and Sustainable Housing through Digitization, data were collected through a focus group and semi-structured in... [more]

Implementation and Verification of Effectiveness of Bulk Emulsion Explosive with Improved Energetic Parameters in an Underground Mine Environment
February 27, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: blasting, detonation velocity, explosives, underground mining
Explosives are commonly used in the mining industry to extract minerals from hard rock deposits. Therefore, an efficient explosive should ensure that the appropriate blast outcome is achieved, taking into account the desired rock-breaking parameters and the costs of drilling and blasting works. Depending on the type of deposit and follow-up processes, a proper blast result may be characterized by fragmentation, muckpile shape, overbreaks, etc. Industry has struggled to respond to the demand for bulk emulsion explosives with improved energetic parameters, having so far been unable to do so safely, effectively, and cost-efficiently. Methods of improving blasting parameters mainly rely on introducing a variety of additives to the emulsion explosive formulation during production, which creates additional hazards at that stage. Alternative, safe methods of achieving an improved energetic performance of emulsion explosives are, therefore, highly desirable. This paper is focused on one such p... [more]

Keywords: capillary pressure, carbonate rock, fractal dimension, pore-throats structure, reservoir classification and evaluation
The Carboniferous reservoir KT-II layer in the Eastern margin of the Pre-Caspian Basin was formed in the open platform sedimentary environment and marked by a complicated pore-throats structure. Understanding the main controls on the carbonate reservoir quality is of great significance for reservoir classification and a relevant production prediction. This study focuses on revealing reservoir pore-throats structure’s fractal characteristics by analyzing the mercury intrusion capillary pressure (MICP), with the integration of the pore-throats radius’ distribution data. The relationship between fractal dimensions and reservoir parameters such as physical properties, mercury median saturation pressure (Pc50) and the proportion of large-size (radius > 0.1 μm) pores demonstrate that the lower fractal dimension corresponds not only to core plug samples with higher permeability, but also to lower Pc50 and a higher proportion of large pore-throats.
