Stability Analysis of a Typical Salt Cavern Gas Storage in the Jintan Area of China
February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: cavern, creep, gas storage, rock salt, stability evaluation
Using underground space to store natural gas resources is an important means by which to solve emergency peak shaving of natural gas. Rock salt gas storage is widely recognized due to its high-efficiency peak shaving and environmental protection. Damage and stress concentrations inside the cavern injection during withdrawal operations and throughout the storage facility life have always been among the most important safety issues. Therefore, accurate evaluation of the stability of rock salt gas storage during operation is of paramount significance to field management and safety control. In this study, we used the finite element numerical analysis software Flac3D to numerically simulate large displacement deformations of the cavern wall during gas storage—in addition to the distribution of the plastic zone of the rock around the cavern and the surface settlement—under different working conditions. We found that the maximum surface settlement value occurred near the upper part of the cav... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: active solar thermal façade, comprehensive evaluation, life-cycle saving, primary energy consumption
Promoting the development and utilization of solar energy is a practical way to alleviate the energy crisis and achieve the goal of carbon neutrality. Recently, interest has arisen in the dual-functional active solar thermal façade (ASTF) system that produces hot water throughout the whole year and reduces cooling and heating load as a function of the building façade. Here, a mathematical model of the ASTF system is built and validated by the experimental data, and the annual performance of the ASTF system in representative cities in three climate regions is evaluated. The results are that compared with the common solar water system, the ASTF system adds passive energy savings, which accounts for 5.8%, 7.2% and 11.4% of the total primary energy savings of the system for Shanghai, Beijing and Lanzhou. Compared with the traditional wall, the ASTF saves 16.4% and 23.0% of cooling energy consumption and 102.3% and 92.4% of heating energy consumption for Shanghai and Beijing, respectively.... [more]

February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Carbon Dioxide, cyclone separator-sublimator, dry ice, swirling flow, visualization
The dry ice sublimation process of carbon dioxide (CO2) is a unique, environmentally friendly technology that can achieve a temperature of −56 °C or lower, which is a triple point of CO2 in CO2 refrigeration systems. In this study, a cyclone separator-evaporator was proposed to separate dry ice particles in an evaporator. As an initial step before introducing the cyclone separator-evaporator into an actual refrigeration system, a prototype cyclone separator-evaporator was constructed to visualize dry ice particles in a separation chamber. A high-speed camera was used to visualize the non-uniform flow of dry ice particles that repeatedly coalescence and collision in a swirl section. Consequently, the dry ice particle size and the circumferential and axial velocities of dry ice were measured. The results show that the equivalent diameter of the most abundant dry ice particles in the cyclone separation chamber is 2.0 mm. As the inner diameter of the separation section decreases, dry ice p... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: attack graph, dynamic virtual network infrastructure, hybrid honeypot
Rapid progress of computing and info-communication technologies (ICT) has changed the ecosystem of power production and delivery. Today, an energy network is a complex set of interrelated devices and information systems covering all areas of electric power operations and applying ICT based on open standards, such as IEC 60870, IEC 61850, and IEC 61970. According to IEC 62351, the energy networks are faced with high cybersecurity risks caused by open communications, security requirements rarely considered in the energy facilities, partial and difficult upgrades, and incompatibility of secure tools with industrial solutions. This situation results in new security challenges, e.g., denial of service attacks on the connected controllers, dispatching centers, process control systems, and terminals. IEC 62351 describes possible ways to comprehensive security in the energy networks. Most of them used in traditional networks (e.g., firewalls, intrusion detection systems) can be adapted to the... February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: electrification of chemical processes, energy saving, microwaves, N2O abatement, Process Intensification, temperature swing adsorption process
N2O has a global warming potential about 300 times higher than CO2, and even if its contribution to the greenhouse effect is underrated, its abatement in industrial production’s tail gas has become imperative. In this work, we investigate the feasibility of the microwave (MW)-assisted regeneration of a 13X zeolite bed for N2O capture from tail gases. Several consecutive adsorption−desorption cycles were performed to verify the microwave heating effect on the zeolite’s adsorption properties. The results of the experimental tests, performed at N2O concentrations of 10, 20 and 40% vol, highlighted that (i) the steps are perfectly repeatable in terms of both adsorbed and desorbed amount of N2O, meaning that the MWs did not damage the zeolite’s structure, (ii) the presence of both H2O and O2 in the feed stream irreversibly reduces the adsorbent capacity due to nitrites and nitrates formation, and (iii) the presence of H2O alone with N2O still reduces the adsorbent capacity of the zeolites,... February 28, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: CO2 emissions, environmental sustainability, ICT, sustainable development, two-step system GMM, Western Balkan countries
The aim of this paper is to replicate an existing study using the Generalized Method of Moments on the impact of ICT penetration (Mobile Phone and Internet) in Western Balkan countries on environmental sustainability through changing CO2 emissions for the period 2000−2015. A two-step system GMM method is used to handle both endogeneity of the independent and persistency of the dependent variables. Two important findings are derived: First, we find that mobile phones have a positive impact, whereas the Internet has a positive but insignificant impact on CO2 emissions per capita in noninteractive models. The impact of ICTs is insignificant as far as CO2 emission from liquid fuel consumption is concerned in noninteractive specifications. Based on this finding, we suggest policymakers of Western Balkan countries follow interdisciplinary policies and strategies considering ICTs such as Internet penetration to mitigate CO2 emissions. Second, in interactive models, all marginal effects are ne... [more]
