Development of Occupant Pose Classification Model Using Deep Neural Network for Personalized Thermal Conditioning
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: deep neural network, pose classification, thermal environment
This study aims to propose a pose classification model using indoor occupant images. For developing the intelligent and automated model, a deep learning neural network was employed. Indoor posture images and joint coordinate data were collected and used to conduct the training and optimization of the model. The output of the trained model is the occupant pose of the sedentary activities in the indoor space. The performance of the developed model was evaluated for two different indoor environments: home and office. Using the metabolic rates corresponding to the classified poses, the model accuracy was compared with that of the conventional method, which considered the fixed activity. The result showed that the accuracy was improved by as much as 73.96% and 55.26% in home and office, respectively. Thus, the potential of the pose classification model was verified for providing a more comfortable and personalized thermal environment to the occupant.

Tests to Ensure the Minimum Methane Concentration for Gas Engines to Limit Atmospheric Emissions
March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: coal seam mining, gas engines, greenhouse gas, methane emissions
During the extraction of hard coal in Polish conditions, methane is emitted, which is referred to as ‘mine gas’. As a result of the desorption of methane, a greenhouse gas is released from coal seams. In order to reduce atmospheric emissions, methane from coal seams is captured by a methane drainage system. On the other hand, methane, which has been separated into underground mining excavations, is discharged into the atmosphere with a stream of ventilation air. For many years, Polish hard coal mines have been capturing methane to ensure the safety of the crew and the continuity of mining operations. As a greenhouse gas, methane has a significant potential, as it is more effective at absorbing and re-emitting radiation than carbon dioxide. The increase in the amount of methane in the atmosphere is a significant factor influencing global warming, however, it is not as strong as the increase in carbon dioxide. Therefore, in Polish mines, the methane−air mixture captured in the methane dr... [more]

March 22, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: Chilean Electric System, exergy analysis, Exergy Efficiency, water–energy–land nexus
The competition and interlinkages between energy, water, and land resources are increasing globally and are exacerbated by climate change and a rapid increase in the world population. The nexus concept has emerged for a comprehensive understanding related to the management and efficiency of resource use. This paper assesses water−energy−land nexus (WELN) efficiency through integration of the principles of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and exergy analysis, using the Chilean energy sector (CES) as a study case. The cumulative exergy consumption (CExC) and cumulative degree of perfection (CDP) are used as indicators for WELN efficiency. The results show the production of 1 MWh of electricity required 17.3 GJex, with the energy component of WELN (fossil and renewable energy sources) being the main contributor (99%). Furthermore, the renewable energy technologies depicted higher CDP of the water−energy−land nexus due to lower CExC and higher technology efficiency concerning non-renewables. Th... [more]

A Two-Phase Method to Assess the Sustainability of Water Companies
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: composite indicator, data envelopment analysis, multi-criteria decision making (MCDM), Sustainability, water utilities management
Composite indicators are becoming more relevant for evaluating the performance of water companies from a holistic perspective. Some of them are related with economic aspects, and others focus on social and environmental features. Consequently, a multidimensional evaluation is necessary for handling the great amount of information provided by multiple single indicators of a different nature. This paper presents a two-phase approach to evaluate the sustainability of water companies. First, a partial composite indicator for each dimension (social, environmental, economic) is obtained using multi-criteria decision making (MCDM). Then, a global indicator is obtained, in terms of the values reached in the previous stage for every partial indicator, by means an optimization problem rooted in data envelopment analysis (DEA). Our proposal offers the possibility of analyzing the performance of each water company under each dimension that characterizes the concept of sustainability, as well as a... [more]

Households’ Preferences for a New ‘Climate-Friendly’ Heating System: Does Contribution to Reducing Greenhouse Gases Matter?
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: buildings, choice experiment, domestic heating, Energy, greenhouse gas emissions, renewables
This study investigates the preferences of Italian home-owners when choosing a new domestic heating system. The focus is on understanding the influence on consumer choice of a potential label certifying the effect of the heating system on the greenhouse effect. To this end, we designed a survey including a discrete choice experiment and administered it to residents in north-eastern Italy. Our findings reveal that, on average, respondents pay particular attention to the green effect of their purchase. The carbon dioxide reduction label was considered second in terms of importance after cost. Further analysis found that our sample presents three clusters of customers, with intra-cluster homogeneous preferences. The cluster analysis showed that while the initial system costs are considered to varying degrees by the whole sample, the carbon dioxide reduction label was considered important by 79% of respondents (members of clusters 1 and 2). To achieve greater results in reducing the greenh... [more]

Considering Well-to-Wheels Analysis in Control Design: Regenerative Suspension Helps to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Battery Electric Vehicles
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: battery electric vehicles, control design, greenhouse gas emission reduction, life cycle assessment, regenerative suspension
Recent research has investigated the energy saving potential of regenerative suspension. However, the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission mitigation potential of regenerative suspension in battery electric vehicles (BEVs) has not been considered. Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a typical method for evaluating GHG emissions but is rarely used in vehicle control design. Here we explore the effects of regenerative suspension on reducing the GHG emissions from a BEV, whose control design considers well-to-wheels (WTW) analysis. The work first conducts the WTW analysis and modelling of the GHG emissions from a BEV equipped with regenerative suspension. Based on the models, the relation between suspension control parameters and GHG emissions is obtained. To reach a compromise between dynamic performance and environmental benefit, two types of control parameters are recommended and their switch rules during the operation are proposed. Finally, we take a case study with different driving cycles, road... [more]

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: building, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), life cycle assessment (LCA), office, technical installations
Life cycle assessment (LCA) is an established method to assess the various environmental impacts associated with all the stages of a building. The goal of this project was to calculate the environmental releases for a whole office building and investigate the contribution in terms of environmental impact for different parts of the building, as well as the impact from different stages of the life cycle. The construction process was followed up during production and the contractors provided real-time data on the input required in terms of building products, transport, machinery, energy use, etc. The results are presented for five environmental impact categories and, as expected, materials that constitute the main mass of the building and the energy used during operation contribute the largest share of environmental impact. It is usually difficult to evaluate the environmental impact of the materials in technical installations due to the lack of data. However, in this study, the data were... [more]

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: co-channel interference (CCI), energy efficiency (EE), energy harvesting (EH), outage probability (OP), power beacon (PB)
In this time, energy efficiency (EE), measured in bits per Watt, has been considered as an important emerging metric in energy-constrained wireless communication networks because of their energy shortage. In this paper, we investigate power beacon assisted (PB) energy harvesting (EH) in half-duplex (HD) communication network under co-channel Interferer over Rayleigh fading environment. In this work, we investigate the model system with the time switching (TS) protocol. Firstly, the exact and asymptotic form expressions of the outage probability (OP) are analyzed and derived. Then the system EE is investigated and the influence of the primary system parameters on the system performance. Finally, we verify the correctness of the analytical expressions using Monte Carlo simulation. Finally, we can state that the simulation and analytical results are the same.

March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: distributed parameter circuit model, electric heat tracing, generalized predictive control, skin effect, temperature distribution model
In order to ensure deep-water flowline safety, this paper combined the axial temperature distribution model of the submarine pipeline and the distributed parameter circuit model of the skin effect electric heat tracing system; such work is conducive to proving that the heating effect of the skin effect electric heat tracing system depends on the distributed circuit parameters and power frequency of the system. Due to the complexity of the power supply device, the frequency cannot be increased indefinitely. Therefore, for the case that the input of the skin electric heat tracing system is constrained, a generalized predictive control algorithm introducing the input softening factor is proposed, and the constrained generalized predictive control strategy is applied to the electric heating temperature control system of the submarine oil pipeline. Simulation results demonstrated that the control quantity of the skin effect electric heat tracing system is effectively controlled within a con... [more]

Numerical Simulation of Temperature Decrease in Greenhouses with Summer Water-Sprinkling Roof
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: greenhouse, heat environment, numerical simulation, roof sprinkler, temperature decrease
Decreasing the temperature of a greenhouse in summer is very important for the growth of plants. To investigate the effects of a roof sprinkler on the heat environment of a greenhouse, a three-dimensional symmetrical model was built, in which a k-ε (k-epsilon) turbulent model, a DO (Discrete Ordinates) irrational model, a Semi-Implicit Method for Pressure-Linked Equations (SIMPLE) algorithm, and a multiphase model were used to simulate the effects of the roof sprinkler, at different flow rates. Based on the simulation results, it was found that the temperature could be further reduced under a proper sprinkle rate, and the temperature distribution in the film on the roof was more uniform. A test was conducted to verify the accuracy of the model, which proved the validity of the numerical results. The simulation results of this study will be helpful for controlling and optimizing the heat environment of a greenhouse.

Keywords: biogas conversion, electricity generation, gas turbine, greenhouse gas reduction, sewage treatment
Combined heat and power production from biogas is now playing an important role in energy and resource utilization as well as pollution control in waste water treatment. This research used biogas from the Bali Sewage Treatment Plant in New Taipei City, Taiwan, as a major source of fuel for the electricity generation. A micro gas turbine electricity generator, Capstone CR-30, which possesses a maximum rated power load (PWL) of 30 kW, was equipped to convert biogas into electricity. The biogas is mainly composed of CH4 (56.1 ± 8.0 vol.%), CO2 (25.5 ± 9.8 vol.%), H2 (0.5 vol.%), and H2S (0.99 ± 0.07 ppmv). During the test operation period of the generator, it was found that the thermal efficiency increases from 19.8% to 23.4% kWhe/kWhth, while the electricity generation efficiency (ηEB) also rises from 0.93 to 1.09 kWhe/m3 biogas as the PWL increases from 10 kW to 30 kW. The results indicated that the generator has a better performance with higher PWL. At PWL = 30 kW, the average adjusted... [more]

Keywords: decoupling theory, differential GMM estimation, environmental Kuznets curve (EKC), panel data, Tapio decoupling model
Global warming has emerged as a serious threat to humans and sustainable development. China is under increasing pressure to curb its carbon emissions as the world’s largest emitter of carbon dioxide. By combining the Tapio decoupling model and the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) framework, this paper explores the relationship between China’s carbon emissions and economic growth. Based on panel data of 29 provinces from 2007 to 2016, this paper quantitatively estimates the nexus of carbon emissions and economic development for the whole nation and the decoupling status of individual provinces. There is empirical evidence for the conventional EKC hypothesis, showing that the relationship between carbon emissions and per capita gross domestic product (GDP) is an inverted U shape and that the inflection point will not be attained soon. Moreover, following the estimation results of the Tapio decoupling model, there were significant differences between individual provinces in decoupling st... [more]

Life Cycle Assessment of Low-Rank Coal Utilization for Power Generation and Energy Transportation
March 21, 2023 (v1)
Subject: Environment
Keywords: AHP, LCA, low-rank coal upgrading, power generation, solar energy
In China, the electricity load is concentrated in the east, but low-rank coal resources are concentrated in the west. To solve this contradiction, in this study, three cases for energy transmission about power system with and without solar energy were studied by life cycle assessment (LCA). Case 1 directly combusts low-rank coal to generate electricity in western China and transmits it to eastern China by grid. Cases 2 and 3 upgrade low-rank coal and transport it to eastern China for power generation. With the evaluating indicators and various stages of LCA, the impact of each case on the environment was compared clearly. The results show that over 90% of the pollutant emission comes from coal combustion throughout the life cycle. The pollutant emission of upgraded coal transportation is less than 5%. With low-rank coal upgrading then combusting, the total emission is less than that of direct combustion. In particular, with solar energy added, the emission of combustion can be further... [more]

Subject: Environment
Keywords: freeze recovery, heat tracing, impedance melting, molten salt, parabolic trough collector
Parabolic trough collector (PTC) technology is currently the most mature solar technology, which has led to the accumulation of relevant operational experience. The overall performance and efficiency of these plants depends on several components, and the heat transfer fluid (HTF) is one of the most important ones. Using molten salts as HTFs has the advantage of being able to work at higher temperatures, but it also has the disadvantage of the potential freezing of the HTF in pipes and components. This paper models and evaluates two methods of freeze recovery, which is needed for this HTF system design: Heat tracing in pipes and components, and impedance melting in the solar field. The model is used to compare the parasitic consumption in three molten salts mixtures, namely Solar Salt, HiTec, and HiTec XL, and the feasibility of this system in a freezing event. After the investigation of each of these subsystems, it was concluded that freeze recovery for a molten salt plant is possible.
