February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: durability, electric vehicle (EV), lithium-ion battery ageing, Noise Vibration and Harshness (NVH), vehicle vibration
This paper outlines a study undertaken to determine if the electrical performance of Nickel Cobalt Aluminum Oxide (NCA) 3.1 Ah 18650 battery cells can be degraded by road induced vibration typical of an electric vehicle (EV) application. This study investigates if a particular cell orientation within the battery assembly can result in different levels of cell degradation. The 18650 cells were evaluated in accordance with Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) J2380 standard. This vibration test is synthesized to represent 100,000 miles of North American customer operation at the 90th percentile. This study identified that both the electrical performance and the mechanical properties of the NCA lithium-ion cells were relatively unaffected when exposed to vibration energy that is commensurate with a typical vehicle life. Minor changes observed in the cell’s electrical characteristics were deemed not to be statistically significant and more likely attributable to laboratory conditions duri... [more]
Effect of Guide Vane Clearance Gap on Francis Turbine Performance
Ravi Koirala, Baoshan Zhu, Hari Prasad Neopane
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: clearance gap, guide vanes, leakage flow, performance, sediment erosion
Francis turbine guide vanes have pivoted support with external control mechanism, for conversion of pressure to kinetic energy and to direct them to runner vanes. This movement along the support is dependent on variation of load and flow (operating conditions). Small clearance gaps between facing plates and the upper and lower guide vane tips are available to aid this movement, through which leakage flow occurs. This secondary flow disturbs the main flow stream, resulting performance loss. Additionally, these increased horseshoe vortex, in presence of sand, when crosses through the gaps, both the surfaces are eroded. This causes further serious effect on performance and structural property by increasing gaps. This paper discusses the observation of the severity in hydropower plants and effect of clearance gaps on general performance of the Francis turbine through computational methods. It also relates the primary result with the empirical relation for leakage flow prediction. Additiona... [more]

Keywords: Ethanol, internal combustion engine (ICE), Modelling, organic Rankine cycle (ORC), swash-plate, thermal inertia, waste heat recovery (WHR)
Waste heat recovery (WHR) in exhaust gas flow of automotive engines has proved to be a useful path to increase the overall efficiency of internal combustion engines (ICE). Recovery potentials of up to 7% are shown in several works in the literature. However, most of them are theoretical estimations. Some present results from prototypes fed by steady flows generated in an auxiliary gas tank and not with actual engine exhaust gases. This paper deals with the modeling and experimental validation of an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) with a swash-plate expander integrated in a 2 L turbocharged petrol engine using ethanol as working fluid. A global simulation model of the ORC was developed with a maximum difference of 5%, validated with experimental results. Considering the swash-plate as the main limiting factor, an additional specific submodel was implemented to model the physical phenomena in this element. This model allows simulating the fluid dynamic behavior of the swash-plate expander us... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: accumulation, core annular flow, fouling, nozzle, pressure drop, restart, stability
With the increasing demand for heavy oil, core annular flow (CAF) is an economical method to transport heavy oil, and many researchers have explored the energy-saving aspects of the CAF method. This paper presents a review of CAF energy saving and factors affecting CAF energy saving. Among them, the energy saving of CAF mainly concerns the changes in pressure drop and drag reduction efficiency; the factors affecting the energy saving of CAF mainly concern the problem of stability, the issue of restarting the pipeline system, the impact of a nozzle, the impact of fouling on the flow in the pipe, and the problem of oil−water accumulation. The aim of this paper is to provide a reference for the practical application of CAF in heavy oil transportation.

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: cutter stock, heavy fuel oil, municipal waste residues, pyrolytic oil, recycled polystyrene
In many countries, Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO) is still a common fuel in industrial applications due to its low price and high energy density. However, the complex and incomplete combustion of HFO results in high levels of emissions and low efficiency, which causes the search for additives to improve its properties without affecting its heating value. The present paper aims to use as an additive the liquid fraction from pyrolysis of the polystyrene for fuel oil, replacing conventional additives such as cutter stock, improving its fluidity without using heat to pump it. As for pyrolysis for obtaining pyrolytic oil, the effect of temperature on the chemical composition of the liquid fraction from the thermal pyrolysis of compact polystyrene was studied. PS pyrolysis was carried out in a temperature range between 350 to 450 °C at a heating rate of 15 °C min−1 in a batch type reactor, with a condensation system, in order to analyze the best fraction liquid yield. At 400 °C we obtained a liquid fr... [more]

Mohamed Sabry, Abdelrahman Lashin
February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: concentrator photovoltaic, heat pipes, solar concentrators, solar energy, thermoelectric generators
Compared to traditional one-sun solar cells, multijunction concentrator cells operating under concentrated solar radiation are advantageous because of their high output and low cooling costs. Such a concentrator PV requires a cooling technique to maintain its performance and efficiency. The performance of a multi-junction concentrator photovoltaic cell of efficiency around 33%, operating under concentrated solar radiation (160−250 sun), has been tested. Heat pipes were used in this study as a fast and efficient way of rejecting heat accumulated in the cells. In this work, the evaporator side of the heat pipe was set in thermal contact with the back side of the solar cell such that the excess heat was transferred efficiently to the other side (condenser side). To positively utilize such excessive heat, two thermoelectric generators were thermally attached to either side of the condenser of the heat pipe, and each was attached to a fin-shaped heat sink. Four different cooling configurati... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: Cheshire Basin, geothermal resources, heat in place, thermal maps
Deep geothermal energy can aid in the decarbonization of heat within the UK; this is required to meet net zero carbon emissions targets by 2050. The Cheshire Basin represents a significant opportunity for the development of deep geothermal resources; there are vast quantities of high permeability sandstones in hydraulic continuity, with temperatures favorable for direct heat use and, potentially, for power generation. Newly produced basal temperature maps in this study indicate the likely maximum temperatures for the basin, with the hottest temperature expected to be between 100 and 131.2 °C in the Crewe area. There have also previously been a range of estimates highlighting a geothermal resource within the basin to be in the region of 44.1 to 75 × 1018 J; however, previous estimates for heat in place are limited to simple volumetric or geometrical constraints. Therefore, this paper uses digitized depth and temperature maps to provide new estimates for the heat in place. Results sugges... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: displacement discontinuity method, in-situ stress, tectonic stress, topography
Geothermal energy is one of the most stable and clean solutions to replace the traditional fossil fuel energy resource. The South Meager geothermal prospect, located in southwestern British Columbia, contains large geothermal energy resources due to recent volcanic activities. The in-situ stress state in the prospective area that influences the characteristics of fractures, thus affecting productivity, remains unknown. In this paper, we present a preliminary analysis of in-situ stress induced by gravitational load at Mount Meager, with tectonics considered. The in-situ stress model was constructed with 3D displacement discontinuity method based on the site-specific topography. The 3D model reveals that the impact of topography is more prominent in shallow and deep regions, while the impact of tectonics is prominent in an intermediate depth range. With the implementation of inferred tectonic stress state, normal faulting regime takes place at shallow depth (1800 m), the fault type becom... [more]

Keywords: frequency range, monitoring, partial discharge, PD, PD sensors, power transformers, UHF
Although partial discharge (PD) measurement is a well-accepted technology to assess the quality of the insulation system of power transformers, there are still uncertainties about which frequency range PDs radiate and which frequency range should be evaluated in a measurement. This paper discusses both a UHF PD frequency range obtained from studies investigating laboratory experiments and a frequency range from numerous practical use cases with online and on-site measurements. The literature review reveals a frequency spectrum of ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) PD measurements in the range of 200 MHz to 1 GHz for most publications. Newer publications extend this range from 3 to 6 GHz. The use cases present UHF PD measurements at transformers with power ratings up to 1000 MVA to determine frequency ranges which are considered effective for practical applications. The “common” frequency range, where measurements from all use cases provide signal power, is from approximately 400 MHz to 900 MHz,... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: finned tubes, finned tubes welding, heat exchanger, heat flow of finned tube, thermal performance of heat exchanger
Due to the use of welded finned tubes in heat exchangers, gas blocks are characterized by very good electric energy production performance, and their reliability can reach 98%. Finned tubes used in heat exchangers are usually welded. Such tubes should be characterised by the following properties: high thermal performance, good resistance to high-temperature corrosion in a flue gas atmosphere, and appropriate joint strength and hardness. The most popular technology for welding finned tubes is MAG. MAG-welded joints are characterised by considerable spattering, weld discontinuities (up to 60%), and non-axial fin alignment. Such irregularities result in a considerably reduced heat flux due to the heat transfer resistance occurring in the welded joint. It has been shown that with weld discontinuities of 20%, the thermal performance of welded finned tubes reduces considerably. This paper proposes the possibility of welding finned tubes with a laser. The thermal properties of laser-welded fi... [more]

Keywords: flow boiling, flow patterns, heat transfer, nanostructures, open microchannels
In recent years, the open microchannel has drawn increasing interest, but severe local dryout limited the heat transfer capability of flow boiling. It was anticipated that nanostructures with exceptional capillary wicking abilities would overcome this problem. In this study, blade-like CuO nanostructures were created in the copper open microchannels to experimentally investigate water flow boiling. Experiments were carried out in nanostructured open microchannels (NMCs), and smooth-surface open microchannels (SMCs), as a comparison, were examined under identical operating conditions. Four main flow patterns, including bubbly flow, slug flow, and two kinds of stratified flow, dominated successively in NMCs and SMCs. Although the flow patterns were similar in NMCs and SMCs, the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) of flow boiling was greatly enhanced by nanostructures under conditions of medium and high heat flux, while the nanostructures’ influence on HTC was unnoticeable at low heat flux. A great number of factors determining the development of photovoltaics are associated with the assessment of possible volumes of solar energy use in correlation with the technical and economic characteristics of photovoltaic equipment. An appropriate assessment of solar energy potential that applies universally to any subsequent use option still remains a crucial task. This work is devoted to the assessment and analysis of the gross, technical and economic potentials of solar energy for photovoltaics. The smart analysis includes the basic program working in the context of connection to databases and to the programs used for determining required initial data or, as a limited option, in the context of full or partial initial data input by the user. Therefore, optimally, a smart network is formed, which for the purposes of obtaining the values of potentials, uses the most up-to-date values of initial data and other required information. This work sets out the tried and tested assessment p... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: boost inverter, cascaded, five-level, reduced component
This article presents a single-stage five-level boost inverter (5L-SBI) topology with reduced power components. The proposed topology falls under the self-balanced switch-capacitors (SCs) type and combines both a DC/DC boost converter and inverter with a switched-capacitor cell. The advantages of proposed topologies include the following: the number of switch counts is reduced, the maximum voltage gain is two times higher than the input voltage, and the capacitor’s charging current is suppressed. Further, the proposed topology cascaded, and three-phase extensions are presented. To attest, the advantages of the proposed topology are thoroughly compared with other recent SCI topologies. The proposed topology is verified under dynamic loading conditions, and the results are presented, considering a 600 W laboratory prototype model.

Keywords: carbon-based nanofluids (CBNFs), direct absorption solar collector (DASC), heating rate, system efficiency factor (SEF), thermal storage capacity
In this study, carbon-based nanofluids (CBNFs) were prepared using a revised vortex trap method and applied in the direct absorption solar collector (DASC) to evaluate the feasibility of CBNFs in DASC. The thermal storage performance of water and different concentrations of CBNFs (0.01, 0.025 and 0.05 wt%) was assessed with a 1000 W halogen lamp as a simulated light source under different volumetric flow rates (1.5, 3.0, and 4.5 L per minute [LPM]) at a constant thermal storage load (2.4 kg of water) and ambient temperature of 26 °C. The thermal storage capacity, system efficiency factor (SEF), and heating rate of the CBNFs as the working fluid were higher than those of water in most cases. The thermal storage capacity and SEF of 0.05 wt% CBNF at a volumetric flow rate of 3.0 LPM were 10.36% and 9.36% higher than that of water, respectively. The relevant experimental results demonstrate the great potential of CBNFs in DASC.

Keywords: biomass particle size, energy yield, gas composition, product yields, torrefaction
The aim of this study is to investigate the influence of biomass particle size on the torrefaction characteristics under different torrefaction temperatures and times. Paulownia wood with particle sizes ranging from 12 to <0.3 mm was selected. It was torrefied at 260 and 290 °C in a fixed-bed reactor for 30−90 min. The results showed that biomass particle size did affect the product’s evolution during biomass torrefaction. With the decrease in particle size from 12 to <0.3 mm, the yield of the solid product decreased by 5.41 and 3.54 wt.%, the yield of the liquid product increased by 5.87 and 3.25 wt.%, and the yield of the gas product changed insignificantly, at 260 and 290 °C, respectively. Comparatively, torrefaction temperature had a more significant effect on the composition of gas products than particle size and torrefaction time. At lower temperatures, decarboxylation reactions dominated in the torrefaction process with more CO2 produced. However, at higher temperatures, d... [more]

Keywords: combined cooling, heating, and power system, organic Rankine cycle coupled with two-stage vapor compression cycle, pressure ratio, thermal conductance, working fluid selection
Owing to different temperature rages of power generation and refrigeration in the cogeneration system, for the sake of selecting the working fluids that are suitable for both power generation and refrigeration simultaneously, 17 commonly used working fluids are evaluated in this paper, based on an organic Rankine cycle coupled with a two-stage vapor compression cycle system in different geothermal fluid temperatures. The performances of working fluids under different working conditions, and the maximum power generation as well as cooling capacity are analyzed. Additionally, the main parameters are analyzed to optimize the system performance. The results indicate that net power output has a local maximum where it corresponds to the optimal evaporation temperature. Besides, the lower the critical temperature, the greater the thermal conductance, and the pressure ratio decreases with evaporation temperature. Hydrocarbons all have higher total heat source recovery efficiency. R1234yf, prop... [more]

Phase-homogeneous LiFePO4 powders have been synthesized. The content of impurity crystalline phases was less than 0.1%, according to synchrotron diffractometry (SXRD) data. Anisotropic crystallite sizes L¯Vhkl were determined by XRD. A low resistance covering layer of mechanically strong ferric-graphite-graphene composite with impregnated ferric (Fe3+) particles < 10 nm in size increases the cycleability compared to industrial cathodes. In accordance with the corrosion model, the destruction of the Fe3+-containing protective layer of crystallites predominates at the first stage, and at the second stage Fe escapes into the electrolyte and to the anode. The crystallite size decreases due to amorphization that starts from the surface. The rate capability, Q(t), has been studied as a function of L¯Vhkl, of the correlation coefficients rik between crystallite sizes, of the Li diffusion coefficient, D, and of the electrical relaxation time, τel. For the test cathode with a thickness of 8... [more]

February 22, 2023 (v1)
Keywords: phase-shifting transformer, power flow regulation, power system, regulating transformer, regulatory tools in the power system
The current situation in world energy requires a new approach to the control of the power flow in power systems. On the one hand, regulations within the EU require the transition to renewable energy. On the other hand, there are no conventional sources available. Thus, there is a need to use known control tools in non-standard applications. One such example is the use of a regulating transformer inside the power grid to use it to shape the power flow in the system. This article presents a proposal of an algorithm for determining new locations for regulating transformers from the point of view of active power control. By analyzing the parameters of the power grid, it is possible to determine which branch of the grid is the most suitable for installing a regulating transformer in it. The use of a regulating transformer inside the grid improves the transmission capabilities of the national power system.

This work focuses on the occurrence and composition of flammable pyrolysis gases which can be expected from stimulation of heavy oil with superheat steam. These gases can have commodity value or be used to fire a conventional boiler to generate steam vapor for superheater feed. Seven oil samples taken from different US locations were tested via thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) with off-gas analysis of light hydrocarbons via mass spectrometry (MS). The samples were heated up to 500 °C at 5 °C/min in a gas flow of moist carbon dioxide and held at 500 °C until no further mass loss was noted. Then, carbonaceous residue was exposed to air at 500 °C to determine enthalpy of combustion by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). To demonstrate that pyrolysis was indeed occurring and not simple de-volatilization, a high-molecular-weight reagent-grade organic molecule, lactose, was first demonstrated to produce components of interest. After treatment under moist CO2 at 500 °C, all samples were... [more]
